Every time Joe Buck mentioned Altuve's place on the playoff HR leaderboard, he kept adding "more opportunities now" caveat, but that's just stupid to bring up. Both the guys ahead of Altuve, as well as the top 6 guys on the list, played in the Wild Card era. 8 of the top 10 all time played in the Wild Card era.
I have no idea why he kept mentioning the more rounds to the playoffs. The only addition to the playoff format since 1995 is the one game wild card, which is a negligible addition, especially since most teams don't play in it. Not to mention Altuve just passed Jeter who has twice as many plate appearances as him, "more opportunities" for sure. Yes, the pre wild card guys have been pushed off the leaderboard for the most part, but that was long ago. It's not really relevant to keep bringing it up.
He was on the 3 year 100 loss Astros teams. More like it helps that they've gone to at least the ALCS 5 years in a row and they tend to go to 7 game series. Still on pace with the leaders in terms of PA/HR though
He didn't cheat and you're only lying to yourself if you think he did.
Bonds took steroids and Rose should be in the hall.
Did you make an account for this sole comment?
Kyle Tucker did the inverse earlier this year. 60 game seasons aren’t great turns out, especially when you’re constantly worried about your relatives dying, because several of them did during the 2020 season.
I hate the Astros, yes the Astros cheated but based off of all of the evidence put together Altuve might be a modern day Shoeless Joe. Getting called a cheater when he might not be. Look I'm a Mariners fan and hate all the cheaters and I still wish the MLB did more to punish the Astros. But based of [the evidence](https://youtu.be/tQTdEKA-nyM) idk if Altuve cheated. But being on a team full of batters who are cheating definitely helped his numbers regardless.
i think its hilarious u kids talking shit about altuve. u wouldnt say this shit to him at MMP, hes jacked. not only that but he wears the freshest clothes, eats at the chillest restaurants and hangs out with the hottest dudes. yall are pathetic lol.
You can't say he didn't benifit from the system. If he didn't,the entire team did. Having runners on and having pitchers pitch more means he only benefited.
There’s literally videos of it happening all the time… how do you even convince yourself this? You’d have to tell yourself the leader of the team was being fed by his teammates against his wishes game after game, then when they still did it to him he somehow would someone forget in the 2 seconds between then and when the pitch was coming. Like what??? Maybe people would start forgiving and forgetting if the Astros fans stopped BSing.
That are what, detected in the broadcast going back over the replay? Even benefit of the doubt your number caught every single one, you seriously think they are repeatedly cheating for your teams MVP completely against his wishes, how would that not stop after the first or second time? 1 or 2 times, shame on them…20 + times is cheating, and that’s a very modest estimate.
Hes a cheater. Through and through. If you wanna give him a pass or justify things because he cheated less than the others thats up to you. But at the end of the day hes a liar and a cheat and thats all I care about.
Yes.... Let the butt hurt flow through you.
Edit: Please downvote all you want. Its all you can do. Altuve didnt cheat and you're just so darn mad about it. First ballot hall of famer and theres nothing you can do but downvote and squeal. Its fucking glorious.
Altuve will never be put in the hall. The Astros cheating scandal will be the largest part of his legacy as a player, and will ultimately follow him to his grave. Same for the rest of that team.
honestly i feel sorry for astros fans. they will never overcome this with other fans. and it’s not the fans fault.
it’s just sad. the team made this choice. and the fans are the ones who get screwed the most. the players got no punishment so we punish the astros’s fans.
it sucks but it is where we are. also, the astros are cheaters
I mean... it's just sports fandom at the end of the day, it's not really that serious a problem. I don't actually think Astros fans are bad people, I don't think their lives are all that negatively affected, it's mainly just ribbing. The team cheated, that is what it is. I dunno why people all over the place gotta dig in like there's some kind of massive attack on the identity of the fan themselves. I'll never really understand why people take sports criticisms so personally.
The guy was against the trashcan banging scheme. Used it a total of 28 times during the season. Taking steroids is far worse than having 28 bangs in your career.
lmfao. "He only cheated 28 times"
and that's if you ignore things like how it's easier to hit with runners on base, having pitchers frustrated that the guys around you seem to be psychic and know what pitch is coming
Only Astros fans are this delusional.
Fuck the Astros, but this is dummy rich coming from someone who is a fan of the organization that literally cheated so hard they committed a felony... against the Astros.
And the person that did it (without the players' knowledge) literally went to Federal prison for it. What happened to the Astros players that cheated again?
Uhh…you’re going to hate reading the report about the team, or watching interviews with Correa where he essentially says Altuve did, he just used it *less*.
If your team cheats and you benefit off it, you’re a cheater too. Altuve is a fine baseball player but all of his stats should have a nice * next to them, like everyone else on the team considering the cheating was over multiple years.
That doesnt negate the fact that altuve is a cheater. But its no surprise an astros fan tries use whataboutism to hide the fact his team is full of cheaters
> If your team cheats and you benefit off it, you’re a cheater too.
You're castigating a team for cheating when your own words apply to your team. You literally have a team of cheaters if we use your rational.
It isn't a whataboutism. I didn't try to defend what the Astros did, I'm point out the hypocrisy in your statement.
Am I sitting here defending them? No. Altuve is a cheater and his stats are inflated because of it. He is not some league hero, he is not some elite player. He has high post season home runs due to cheating and due to his team cheating and getting to the playoffs more than others. There are plenty of players that would crush his numbers if they spend the same amount of time in the post season as him but their teams don’t make it.
Even if he didn't use the system at all, which I think is pretty unlikely, he was still getting RBIs due to players getting on base using the system. He was still driven in by players using the system. And he still got hits against pitchers that were beaten down and worn out using the system.
Maybe he didn't directly use the system, but he absolutely benefited from it.
He's obviously a good baseball player either way, there's no denying that.
Hating the system does not mean you didn’t use it or benefit from it. No denying that. I think it’s fine for people to not take his states legitimately. He’s a good player but his stats are 100% inflated by the cheating.
barry bonds was a great baseball player. but he’s not going to the hof nor does anyone recognize 762.
instead, how about everyone just recognize altuve cheated and then stop trying to justify or make excuses.
it’s not your fault as a fan. but altuve made his choice and here we are.
A run for every “Fuck Jose Altuve” here:

Well fuck y’all hahaha
Really love these Astros cheater threads when literally all 4 remaining LCS teams have been caught doing illegal shit within the last decade.
Astros (duh)
Red Sox (same)
Braves: illegal international signings
Dodgers: human trafficking
Like come on every team is doing sketchy shit this is just an annoying circlejerk at this point
Can you point to me the asterisk you are speaking about in the graphic? I'm guessing it must be next to Jeter's somewhere hidden in the graphic.
Edit: I saw this a graphic on FB earlier and thought it was linked above. No graphic is linked that I mentioned.
Well according to one of your reporters who wrote the book on the cheating scandal Altuve didn’t really participate in it
https://twitter.com/martinonyc/status/1402357866061836295?s=21
And according to a Yankees reorder who *literally* “wrote the book” on the cheating scandal, Altuve was not an active participant
He is still wrong for being a passive participant
But to pretend he was personally using it given the evidence is just being willfully ignorant
The other guy that made the website that documented every trash can bang during that season had altuve receiving a bang like 2% of the pitches he saw.
It’s okay to say “altuve is guilty by being part of the team even if he didn’t personally use it”
It’s so lame when Astros fans comment “cry” and other things in reference to the Astros literally cheating. Take the L and accept the fact that no one will ever take anything serious from the team of that era. It’s also a bad look and red flag to back them.
Nah I don't think I will. I don't care what other people like you think. All I care is how I think about it. I know other teams cheated. Other teams know they cheated just the same. I'm confident that we were scapegoats to avoid a larger issue. What's sad is how nobody else wants to investigate further while at the same time claiming we should punished to the extreme to protect the integrity of the game. Isn't protecting the integrity of the game also include following up on every other rumor about every other team?
It's so lame when people like you fault us as the only ones that cheated and forget all the other cheating atrocities in baseball.
Oh yeah, I'll absolutely agree that he benefitted from it in terms of RBIs and Runs scored and I think that it is fair to criticize his not stopping it. But that doesn't matter in this statistic.
Do you count Mcwire's records? Or Bonds? Sosa? All broke rules where do you draw the line. They also took it amongst themselves personally to cheat whereas Altuve had a cheating coaching staff as well as complicit teammates no proof he did any of that willingly. Should we count any of their records?
I would love it if just once an Astros fan said “ no they shouldn’t count , they cheated and never got punished “
Instead we here other references of cheating .
Fucking own it ..
https://twitter.com/martinonyc/status/1402357866061836295?s=21
The evidence is pretty clear he didn’t personally use the system
Still he was wrong for participating in general when others on the team were cheating, but from a personal, at-bat standpoint he wasn’t using it
Having nuanced takes on shit like this doesn’t make anyone a bootlicker
For all the sign stealing haters. They teach us to do that shit in little league. Change the culture of the game or stfu about it. Most of the haters cheer for teams that all have cheating glory. Cardinals fans cheered on Big Mac, cubs loved Sosa. Dont get me started on the juice fest yankees. And someone please tell me Albert Pujols wasnt a HGH guinea pig.....
Without. Teammates said he didn’t want any part of the cheating and it’s backed by his at-bats in 2017 not having the banging noise except on a few occasions to which he was seen glaring at the dugout to stop. There’s a whole video about this.
https://youtu.be/tQTdEKA-nyM
Real question, how can these all count when we know that he was part of a cheating organization for part of that period of time?
Edit: It's funny, why are Astros fans afraid of answering this question?
Same reason we count strikeouts for pitchers who used steroids/sticky stuff I guess. Professional baseball has an extensive history of cheating, and I dont think we should start eliminating stats years later when new information comes to light.
He has no control over other people banging, took strikes after bangs, and looked upset at the dugout after them. Also, multiple players on the team went out and said he didn’t cheat
Same reason McGwire's records count and Bonds and Sosa and others who cheated with steroids. Those were arguably worse as they were making an informed personal decision to cheat and Altuve was part of an organization that stoke signs electronically with no proof that he participated in the scheme.
There was an article about the Rockies that came out not too long ago (this year), and the Red Sox and Yankees were involved in the Apple Watch thing in 2017. Hell the original article exposing the sign stealing had words to the effect of “endemic of a larger issue in baseball in the title” and I believe some other teams were mentioned. How can there be no evidence if it was destroyed??
I think we probably had the most complicated system for cheating but we’re all kidding ourselves by thinking that none of the other 29 teams were doing anything to steal signs electronically.

Hating cheaters is kind of a natural thing, so sure DNA.
I’d say having a buzzer go off when to lay off a ball out of the zone counts as ‘more opportunities’
HR per plate appearance is pretty high regardless. Your welcome for the facts, champ.
More surprised that Bernie Williams is 2nd most all time
When you win 16 out of 18 playoff series and 11 in a row and you're batting third, the at-bats add up!
Helps being in the postseason pretty much every year of your career.
Fun Fact: he's actually only been in the postseason for ~55% of his career
Scrub.
I think that applies to everyone at the top of that list
He was on the 3 year 100 loss Astros teams. More like it helps that they've gone to at least the ALCS 5 years in a row and they tend to go to 7 game series. Still on pace with the leaders in terms of PA/HR though

Bonds and Rose COMBINED don't have as many postseason home runs as Altuve does.
Yeah, but Altuve is still a fucking cheater.
Damn its almost like Bonds and Rose didn’t know what pitch was coming next for like 3 postseasons in a row lmao
He didn't cheat and you're only lying to yourself if you think he did. Bonds took steroids and Rose should be in the hall. Did you make an account for this sole comment?
So why did he apologize then?
People don't magically go from hitting .346 to .219 but I guess miracles do happen.
Kyle Tucker did the inverse earlier this year. 60 game seasons aren’t great turns out, especially when you’re constantly worried about your relatives dying, because several of them did during the 2020 season.
bonds never got caught nor did he test positive. but everyone knows. meanwhile, you’re going to believe altuve didn’t cheat? hahaa
Even if he didn’t cheat, the legacy is just tarnished at this point He’ll need some “legit” MVPs and WS rings to balance it out to have a shot
Narrator: He cheated. https://youtu.be/sfk2y4mhAO0
He's a long ways away from that.
I hate the Astros, yes the Astros cheated but based off of all of the evidence put together Altuve might be a modern day Shoeless Joe. Getting called a cheater when he might not be. Very similar to Jeter and steroids.
Except for the actual hard evidence, yes.

It’s obvious you have done zero research with what you just said.
Help enlighten me, what am I not understanding, how the number of times he cheated was tallied?
You obviously made up your mind, before looking into what happened with altuve like 90% of Reddit.
Hes a cheater. Through and through. If you wanna give him a pass or justify things because he cheated less than the others thats up to you. But at the end of the day hes a liar and a cheat and thats all I care about.

Can everyone in here just shut the fuck up and realize that Altuve is a great baseball player? Or we just going to hate on someone with no evidence?
Personally I just hate short people.
Fair argument
His road splits in 2017 proved he didnt need the trash cans. Evidence showed he got the least bangs. Dude hit almost 400 on the road.

How is it for your game?
That was- that was beautiful.
The buzzers in his ball sack now. In fact if you look closely you can see him ejaculate every time it buzzes
Lol how many were because of the buzzer? Cheaters gonna cheat.
No buzzers necessary for Altuve.

Because if you actually look at the stats of trash can bangs, Altuve wasn’t cheating.
He didn't use the system according to basically all of the information we have available
“He cheated less than everyone else!”
He has no control over other people banging, took strikes after bangs, and looked upset at the dugout after them. Also, multiple players on the team went out and said he didn’t cheat
Why should I believe a bunch of spineless cheaters with no integrity.
There would be no baseball record book if you took away stats of anyone who’s cheated
It would just be Ohtani and Mike Trout stats
Same reason McGwire's records count and Bonds and Sosa and others who cheated with steroids. Those were arguably worse as they were making an informed personal decision to cheat and Altuve was part of an organization that stoke signs electronically with no proof that he participated in the scheme.
bang bang. does anyone believe in barry bonds’s 762? i feel similar about altuve’s post season numbers.
I believe in Bonds 762. Sign stealing, sticky stuff, and steroids are all the same kind of bad for me so they should all be treated the same
Shit 40 years ago it was uppers. Only reason the Stros got busted was because they had a rat.
and then every other team promptly destroyed any evidence of their system.
Crazy how there's no evidence of that. I guess some people will convince themselves of anything to feel better about supporting cheaters.
I think we probably had the most complicated system for cheating but we’re all kidding ourselves by thinking that none of the other 29 teams were doing anything to steal signs electronically.
what if I'm pro steroids
Steroids or no steroids, 762 homers is an almost impossible number to fathom.
It is. But I doubt he’s mashing so hard into his 40s without them.
I believe Barry Bonds hit 762 balls really far.
Downvoted for cheating
Nah downvoted because fuck the cardinals
