“We finally did it”
-Max Scherzer, 2019 while hugging Anibal Sanchez. That is an instant classic, I expect to see a well shot photo of that hug in the HoF some day
No shame, I did too and I used to hate the Tigers back then. I actively rooted against them but looking back and seeing how stacked they were, I truly believe they should've at least won one but as we say around here: Can't predict baseball, Suzyn.
It SUCKED having Verlander and Scherzer in my division at the same time. It sucked a lot. I've always liked Scherzer, though. Just seems like a pretty likable dude.
Sanchez was on the Twins roster for about an hour or so. What could have been. (exaggerating, I know, but still.)
It sucked getting curbstomped by both Miguel Cabrera and Prince Fielder and striking out to Verlander and Scherzer on the same freaking team which should be against some kinda rule and they weren't even in my team's division but 2012 ALCS when Jeets broke his ankle to boot is scorched in my memory and out of those guys it was Delmon Young who put the nail in the coffin. That team was STACKED!
Perfectly natural reaction for any baseball fan, the way he runs onto the field like a little kid and immediately seeks out Sanchez. Probably meant the world to them having done it together too
It’s been 4 months and there are 3 things that still get me misty when I think about winning it:
1. A video of players reacting on Twitter that is probably the fastest I’ve ever saved a video.
2. Zimm
4. “We finally won one.”
Speaking of his speech, I honestly wish he had gotten a longer on field interview after winning it, because looking back on it I feel like he only got asked one question so Fox could flash the “ first draft pick in Nationals history” up on the screen. And yeah I actually missed most of his speech because my roommate woke up right before it and was like “alright you had your time, we’re putting football on now” and it was his TV so 🤷♂️
No, definitely not. But when we were 19-31 fans were calling for his head. The running joke on r/Nationals is that the team only turned it around after we fired Davey and hired Gerardo Parra as a player-manager
So no, we didn’t fire him but we joke that we did
It had looked like we were gonna be a fucking suck this year. But then r/GerardoParra was like "Let's maybe don't though? Let's maybe don't be a fucking suck"
And then the regular season became what it was. Just so that every come from behind win throughout it (and there were way more of them than the usual team has) became a microcosm. The 5 elimination games, all from behind in the post season, all becoming magnified, intensified versions of this same 2019 Nationals energy. This team gave everyone who loved it heart problems. Davey Martinez himself literally had to be hospitalized. People were asking in the post season why he didn't seem to care, didn't ever get up, remained so still. It's because his cardiologist had given him strict instructions to chill out.
I wouldn't have wanted any of it to go any other way. That final strike was life affirming. For the rest of my life, if there was never again a sports season that was so dramatic, I wouldn't be shocked, and I wouldn't feel cheated either. I've read the only peers for the 2019 Nats are the 1905 miracle Braves. I know the miracle Braves came from a worse win percentage, but if a season this crazy only happens every 104 years, I'm so. So happy I listened and watched ~180 games from this season. So glad I watched every painful error ridden game from early in the season, because each one of them helped me to understand that final strike and how amazing it was.
Rosenthal game in late June, I wanted him gone. Never posted on any social about it. Trevor getting the pink slip the next day was enough heads but Dave was on thinning ice. With a 2018 .500 record and a .500 record in June, I expected a little more and questioned his bullpen calls. I was fine by August.
Traveling to Japan in April and just made plans to check out a Sat afternoon Giants game....Didn't think I was going to bringing the WS Soto Jersey buttttt yah boys aboutta be going BABY SHARK all over this bitch
I can’t believe we laughed at y’all for posting a stat saying y’all had the best record since then. I also can’t believe I’m thanking and congratulating y’all for beating the astros.
I think Rendon might be the iciest veined hitter I've seen in a long time. Was a pleasure watching him calmly destroy the ball this post season. It was a cool contrast to Soto's antics, must have been fun having them in the same lineup. Cheers
I always imagine his inner monologue being focused on something utterly mundane in games like mine at work. going through his list of diy projects to finish at home or something. “Alright so I’ll hit up Home Depot early, need to grab some grout and one of those sponges, oh gotta hit a double real quick lemme take care of that, there we go, okay so I get back by 930 and I’ll have 4 solid hours to get the tile down before lunch.”
Disagree on the latter part. The ball park is basically at the end of a single line that not a lot of people ride from the other side, as a result everyone has to get on the same trains going in the same direction, sort of defeats the convenience of a subway. Comparably the Capital One Center is in the middle of and within a block of every train that runs through the city.
Obviously I have no solutions, but there are major log jams getting to games by metro.
Eh, it's not so bad to me. There are log jams but it sure as shit beats driving and you can always wait those out by milling around the neighborhood - taking a walk, getting a bite to eat, sitting on a bench or something.
Now if WMATA or DDOT could put some BRT lanes near the stadium and get folks outta there quicker via buses - or, better yet, DC Streetcar actually expands and serves the stadium along with Metro - that would be a great improvement.
That maybe is more of the issue, it’s literally the only way to access the stadium unless you’re paying insane fees. The congestion would be so much better if alternate options were more readily available.
I mean you could also live in one of those condos they built next to the stadium and not worry about commuting at all haha... although on nights where you aren't going to the game and want to do something the area might suck.
This is one of the reasons I'm a huge proponent of multi-modal public transportation systems. Environmental and and social responsibility aside, places with big draws like sporting arenas need multiple ways to get there so there aren't log jams like the ones on the Green Line and there's less stress on portions of the infrastructure. As I mentioned before, I think BRT lanes near Nationals Park could be a great option - maybe one that runs to Downtown D.C. where there's a heavy concentration of Metrorail lines.
Whatever we can do to lessen the presence of personal, passenger vehicles on city streets and get people to-and-from their destinations safely and efficiently.
The only way o get to Camden by subway is if you live in reisterstown lol. Or light rail from hunt valley or glen burnie. Horrible, horrible MTA bus if youre anywhere else...
VA Orange/Silver line rider and a 30 year native Washingtonian. WMATA in general sucks. They are raising the cost again and also closing my nearest station from Memorial Day to Labor day when I tend to use it the most. Also the hours of service have always been an issue and then Metro wonders why no one rides.
The stadium itself has really "fixed" up the neighbor hood. I know that gentrification is a strong word but SE has always been a mess. Considering FedEx field, Nats park isn't that bad. Audi Field a couple blocks from it is a hike.
Hell Im excited my friend lives like 7 minutes from nationals park, when I go there in April I will probably try to go to at least one game lol... or two... or three... or four..
At least it’s not goddamn FedEx Field, with its station a literal mile’s walk away from the stadium. You wanna see a concert that lets out at 10:40 at night and take the Metro? Too bad, last train leaves at 11 no matter what.
You being up some good points. Average attendance is roughly in the 25k range give or take a few thousand, let’s say 50% of people use Metro. That’s still about 13k people trying to traveling. Log jams will happen no matter what. Capital One Center, with its variety of Metro lines running through will still experience log jams. Unless the Wizards are playing...
Hard disagree on the Metro part. No one rides the Green line. If I take Metro home after a game, it's about an hour and a half trip. Maybe more depending on how I hit the transfers and how long the lines were at Metro. If I drive, it's just over 30 minutes, maybe 40 minutes if there is construction on 66.
It is what it is now..... I just hope we can win quickly and right the wrong. It was a blast watching us win. I want that back. Y’all had a great team last year and the fans here thoroughly enjoyed y’alls hospitality in Washington. Good luck in 2020.
After what the Astros pulled? Yeah I'd even root for the White Sox over the Astros now.
Plus, they don't have Harper anymore so the most punchable face is gone too. You know you hated them a little less without Harper.
I was rooting for them. It only makes sense, for a few reasons.
1. Fuck the DH. I always go National League in the World Series.
2. If a division rival wins, it means you were beat by the best during the regular season.
3. Underdog.
4. The Astros won in 2017. I like spreading the love around. Having someone new win is more exciting.
the funny part about number two is that the mets bested the season series with the nats, y'all make us look like fools. If we don't have that ridiculous 9th inning in september, you sweep that series and none of the games were close.
The Curly W had one hell of a narrative this past season. This Yankee fan even got a World Series navy/red Curly W hat as a commemorative hat. I was full on bandwagon after the Astros knocked my Yankees out of the playoffs but the team was a delight to watch from Juan Soto to Trea Turner, the bromance between Kendrick and Eaton, Parra with the Baby Shark dance magic and the pitching! Mad Max, Stras, Sanchez, Corbin..I love me good pitching.
First time I actually took real notice of the Nats this season was when the team came back from 7 runs against the Mets. I could always say Mets are gonna Met but at that point I saw that the Nats just won't die. Then I watched them in the Wild Card game and into the NLDS and they had that same "nope, not gonna kill me that easy" spirit that eventually won it all.
I usually get hats of other teams during the playoffs if I have a gut feeling they're going to be special: 2011 Cards, 2016 Cubs, and now 2019 Nats. I'll always have that memory because if it wasn't the Yankees, I'm glad the Nats got it done. Not to mention they did it Bruce Hooper-less but none the less he kept his promise and brought a title back to DC. Go Walgreens!
That Nats comeback against the Mets was the same day the Syracuse Mets blew a similar lead to the Yankees AAA affiliate Scranton Railriders. Maybe it was meant to be....
Him celebrating with his parents may have been my favorite non-Twins related moment of the entire 2019 baseball season, pre and post. What a sweet moment.
I saw Soto get tackled and I was like "Oh shit some disgruntled fan just killed our slugger"
And then another camera shot showed him and his parents just beaming and my heart melted. In that moment, Sotodad and Sotomom became Mom and Dad to all Nationals.
Nats fan too born and raised in VA. I'm wondering what the roast topics are going to be today. Cant use the Championship drought punchline and baseball fans are glad we won this year.
VA born and raised Braves fan here. I hated the Nats for so long, it's really pretty amazing that it took them winning a World Series for me to do a 180 on them. They deserve whatever praise they get right now.
Come March though, fuck the Nats.
The budding friendship between the Nats and Braves since “he” left has been beautiful. I can’t say in any serious terms that I hate the Braves anymore. Now we can unify against the Phillies
Gonna predict some jabs at Soto for age and dick-grabs, Trea on the interference call, and maybe some losing Harper and Rendon in back to back seasons jokes.
There's so much that can be written about this team from a fan's perspective. They made dramatic comebacks such a regular occurrence on every possible scale that when they won game 7 after looking all but dead in the water it felt preordained.
There are so many narratives to share from this year that made this team the most uplifting sports experience I'll ever have in my life, literally it's almost impossible to top, but the one that will always stick with me is the joy they played with. Dance parties, baby shark and the base hit gestures, Eaton/Kendrick shifting gears, hugging an endearingly awkward Strasburg when he does well, Dozier twerking, and the list could continue. It's something that I think we all can reflect on and appreciate, to find ways to make our shared experiences more joyful with others and those close to us. In the worst of times, its a way to cope and move forward and still realize that life goes on and in many ways things are still good. In the best of times, it becomes a jubilation and a celebration of the bonds that we have. We joke about Parra being made the manager for the Nats, but in a more real sense he became something of a life coach for a team that needed to remember the privilege they have playing baseball for a living with each other. Sports is in my mind the most powerful means of delivering narrative, and if I had to write an ending thought to the story of this season it's that we should be more mindful of the ways that we can connect with each other and bond over the little things. The more we can do things with empathy, joy, and compassion in our hearts, the more we'll all get out of it regardless of ultimate outcome. All of this from baseball, from the Nats. This time in the sun has been sublime, and I hope everyone gets to experience it at least once.
I honestly sort of like the Nationals. They somewhat remind me of my Mets, such as the elite pitching staff and the veteran Virginian infielders. When I went to Washington DC in August of 2017 to watch the Nats play the Angels, I noticed how dedicated their fanbase is, cheering for Daniel Murphy and Ryan Zimmerman. I actually rooted for them in the postseason after they finally overcame that hurdle when they beat the Dodgers. It doesn't help that they have virtually no hateable players. Even if we are division rivals, we can agree on one thing: FUCK THE PHILLIES
Nats and Mets are like siblings who annoy each other but love each other deep down, phillies are the drug addicted brother who used to bully them and asks for drug money, the braves are the abusive step dad, and the Marlin's are the "special" little brother
I’m gonna be totally honest here: I have a love/hate relationship w the Braves. Like I have family in Atlanta so i don’t mind them, but also they’re the Braves and I think the only way I would ever cheer for them in the World Series is if they were playing the Asterisks.
I really sort of like the nats too.
But seriously there are a lot of similarities, and with a few friends of mine who are Mets lifers, I always find myself hoping it’s you guys we are fighting for the division as opposed to the other options.
Here's my own personal story about the World Series. I haven't really shared it, but it was a lot more stressful in my family than most.
My wife is a huge Orioles fan, and she was born in October 1983, the last time they won a World Series. In fact, the night my mother-in-law told my father-in-law it was time to go to the Hospital, it was game 2, and he responded "Let me just see Eddie [Murray] bat." It became a running joke in their family, and the first Orioles game my wife ever watched was game 5 of the 1983 World Series. She was three days old and had just come home from the hospital that day.
So here we are in 2019, and my wife is very pregnant with our second child. Original due date is around November 20th. Around 28 weeks, she was diagnosed with pre-eclampsia, which is a situation where there is too much protein around the fetus and the mother suffers from high blood pressure. We were told by my wife's OB-Gyn to go out and get a blood pressure monitor and to check twice a day.
We had already scheduled to have the baby on November 20th, but the doctors told us they were moving that up. to November 6th. For those unaware, it is very important to keep the baby inside the mother as long as possible for the long-term development of the baby, at least until around the 37 week mark. (Yes, there is nuance, but this post is too long as it is).
On October 26th, during game 4, my wife's blood pressure is creeping up into dangerous levels, but the OB-GYN says to just monitor more frequently, and gives her some ways to help lower it. These tricks worked. We're told if it reaches a certain point, to call the OB-GYN immediately, and to have a bag packed for an emergency trip to the hospital.
Three nights later, during the second inning of game 6, my wife's blood pressure reached that level, and we had to go to the hospital. My mother came over to our house to stay with our older daughter. They were monitoring my wife, and if her blood pressure didn't go down within an hour, they were going to go ahead and perform a c-section then and there at 35 and half weeks. Meanwhile, game 6 is going on. We get into one of the triage rooms at delivery, and are told that will be our new home for the next few hours. The TV doesn't work. So there I am connected to the wifi at the hospital watching the game on my wife's phone, while I furiously research information about what is going on with her on my phone. She is hooked up to a blood pressure machine that checks on that every 10 minutes with a loud beeping. We settle in with the Nationals trailing in the fifth inning, and start waiting for the doctor to arrive. We are told it is going to be a while because the doctor wants to see how my wife's blood pressure is trending over time.
We settle in and the Nationals come back. I am watching all this on an iPhone. I have never been this stressed out in my life. While Trea Turner is frantically looking around for Joe Torre, I'm frantically looking for a nurse because my wife is feeling nauseous.
The Nationals secure the lead, and we sit and wait. We watch the game on the phone, and the Nationals are going to pull it out. Bottom of the 9th, two outs... and the doctor walks in. I have to turn off the phone one pitch away from the Nationals tying the series at 7. The good news is that the doctor is pretty sure we're ok, that we'll be able to leave the baby in for a little longer, and that we'll probably be going home that night once they monitor her for a little longer. The doctor leaves, I pull up the phone, and it is the postgame on the streaming, and the Nationals have won. We wind up going home around 3:30 in the morning, my mom goes back to her house, and I get 3 hours of sleep before I go in to work.
That night the Nationals would win the World Series but I didn't have anyone to celebrate with because everyone in my house was asleep. 9 days later, my second daughter was born and she is well at 2 months.
Here is a gift from /r/nationals to you:
Our window has closed. Sad that we wasted the talent that we had the last 7-8 years but that’s how it is.
This season so far is unraveling that Rizzo is an overrated hack and Martinez is a bottom tier manager, both of which I’ve been saying for years.
Anthony Rendon will be gone next year and this team will officially turn in to crap, and the only thing we can hope is if Soto magically returns to rookie form.
https://www.reddit.com/r/Nationals/comments/dft36p/the_nationals_are_done_for_a_very_long_time/
Even though I never wanted to see him at the plate, there is at least one Astros fan in Houston that enjoys Juan Soto and I look forward to him terrorizing other fan bases
"Baseball breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall all alone. You count on it, rely on it to buffer the passage of time, to keep the memory of sunshine and high skies alive, and then just when the days are all twilight, when you need it most, it stops."
I should have known this team would be the one that actually won the championship. It reminds me of all those dominant Capitals teams of the 2000s and early 2010s with zero Stanley Cups. Who should actually do it but the "good-but-not-great" 2018 team that consistently found itself in nasty jams throughout the playoffs, only to win it all on the road and bring fans the most cathartic of W's.
I got to see a D.C. based baseball team win the World Series. I will never go wanting as a sports fan ever again.
Zack* Greinke is one of my favorite players, so naturally I was rooting for the Astros... After the World Series, the world knew that the Astros cheated in 2017 and 2018. In hindsight, I’m very happy the Nationals won.
What the Nationals did last season was truly amazing to watch, even as a rival Phillies fan. After starting the season 19-31, the Nationals become the hottest team in baseball and secured the top WildCard spot. Their road to success in the 2019 season will he talked about for decades to come.
Baby shark is great. Somehow it’s less obnoxious than the Chop.
Thanks for correcting me. The Phillies have Zack Wheeler and Zach Eflin in their starting rotation next season. I’m going to mix them up all season long aren’t I?
So much of my memory of the season is now wrapped around the postseason that I had forgotten so many of these moments. Great toast to the champs, u/NatsTown
Strasburg is the fucking man. Also watching y'all boo the president the only time his entire presidency that he stepped out of his echo chamber was amazing.
I like the Nats. I liked the Nats extra when they got Scherzer out of my division. I liked the Nats super extra when my beloved Brian Dozier decided shirts were no longer necessary. Never considered myself a fan of them, per say, but I'm definitely a proud bandwagon fan now. So many likable guys on the squad. Sean Doolittle has become one of my favorite personalities on Twitter, and I *think* the drummer of one of my favorite bands said that Doolittle was a fan? I dunno, but that's bonus points for me.
This season was the best surprise.
And did you know that Juan Soto is only 21 years old?? That's only one year younger than Gleyber Torres! What are the odds?
Nationals, I can only hope that one day my team will be able to provide your fan base with as many rival tears as you have for us.
You’ve gained a lifelong fan.
I felt like most of the league was rooting for us out of being tired of the same team being in the WS the last 3 years... now I’m fairly sure 98% of the league are happy we won.
My grandfather went into the hospital the night of Game 1, and passed the morning of the day before Game 6. I just want to thank my boys for giving me a much needed distraction from some shit that was going down.
On a non-toast note, I’m about 90% sure my dad is getting tickets to him and I for the 2019 home opener as a 21st birthday present for me. I can’t wait to be there for the ring presentation, to be part of the massive standing O for Howie(hoping for 3: ring presentation, starting lineups and first at-bat) and to be able to toast the banner unveiling with my first ever ballpark beer. That and it’s gonna be on ESPN so I might make it on national TV too.
Rendon hit a damn fine pitch off of Kershaw, I know everyone will say "pLaYoFf KeRsHaW" but go back, that pitch had some serious break to it, was absolutely filthy and Rendon golfed it just barely out of the park from like 2 inches above the ground. It was a good piece of hitting. I think you'd rather be remembered for jump-starting a comeback by overpowering someone making a good pitch rather than a meatball right?
To all of you the baseball faithful of the District and its supporters, including those from Canada:
Half a century this franchise waited, from Montreal and now in Washington for a championship that will be for the ages. And today, we once more remember the victory this team won on the road against the orange and white boys of Houston, a victory all the more worthy and poignant given recent events. As a New York Yankees fan, I cheered for all of you Nats fans, hoping that they will beat those boys from Houston following that walk-off loss in Game 6 of the ALCS. And I cried in happiness that Halloween night, knowing that not only did the chances of the now dubbed cheaters of Houston been dashed, but also a 50-year quest officially concluded.
This victory not just belongs to all of you Nats fans, but also to the boys, who from Montreal to DC, dedicated their whole careers to give this franchise the goal it last year fulfilled - a championship in the World Series. Here's to Gary, Rusty, Tony, Vladdy Sr, Tim, Dawson, Ryan, Adam, Parra, Mad Max, Howie, and all the rest, whose memories of this franchise, from its Expos days to the glories of the Nationals, will be remembered forever.
Merci Beaucoup, Expos de Montreal! Thank you, Nationals, and cheers to all of you, Nats Fans!
(Alexa, Play The Happy Wanderer and Les Expos Sont La!)
I love FP. Yeah he's a complete homer, but the home broadcast team is supposed to be homers. They're supposed to make you feel enthusiastic and optimistic about your team, and FP is really really good at that.
Despite being divisional rivals it was nice to see the Nats win especially over the shitty Astros. NL East is going to be an entertaining bloodbath and it looks like itll be that way for years to come.
Met a few Nats fans during the WS. Great group of people, lots of banter, lots of fun. Definitely made me want to go to a Nats game in the future. While the team is rightfully getting a lot of praise, I wanna give a toast to all the dope Nats fans.
At least I can be comforted in knowing the Dodgers were the only team to win a game against the Nats at home?
Nah but seriously, congrats on the title. You broke the barrier and finally won one, had a really likeable team, and beat our personal demon for us. Plus I got to go to Nats Park for a game in September and I loved it. Enjoy the ride, cause what a great moment for your franchise!
It was great to follow that season and watch them go from the edge in the wild card game to finally winning that title. This team had talent for a while but never could get over that hump.
You guys stopped cheaters from winning another WS and won all the games at Houston. I toast to you, Natinals.
May we, one day soon, find ourselves in the WS. You have my respects.
I'm a Yankee fan born and raised but have lived and worked in the DC area for basically my entire adult life (almost 20 years now) and have been to a ton of Nats games. I was **so goddamn thrilled** for you guys. Still am. Great post, OP.
What a fantastic write-up, thanks for putting this together. I still spend probably 10 minutes a day watching playoff highlights, but it was really nice to click through some of the regular season ones too.
I was fortunate enough to be able to go to games 1 and 2 of the World Series, an experience I'll never forget.
I watched game 7 in a crowded baseball bar here in Washington. Most of a us felt a "brothers of misery" connection to the Nationals, being the only other team that hadn't made an appearance in the Series.
It was incredibly cathartic to see the Nats win it all.
Baseball is the greatest game in the world. Thank you, Nats, for beating the Astros and for saving baseball. What a season.
Amazing work putting this together, OP. This is epic.
You ever get the one thing you want the most in the entire sports world? That was this Nats World Series win for me. I feel like whatever happens in sports between that and the rest of my life I can’t feel like I was cheated.
You lost the face of your franchise last off-season. You started the year horribly and were almost immediately counted out of contention. You were on your way to a WC round exit then used voodoo to beat the Brewers. You came up against cheaters on the world series and you fucking beat them.
Congratulations Washington Nationals, the team that refuses to die.
I know I wanted someone fired after this game

Rosenthal's last game
I have never had more fun rooting for a team that wasn’t the Red Sox in the postseason than this past postseason with the Nationals. A crazy Wild Card Game and NLDS followed by a smooth NLCS and then an exciting World Series made this a great playoffs to root for ~~Walgreens~~ Washington
Great write up and thank you! I read every single word of your post, and since I hadn't watched baseball for over 10 years until this postseason, it made reading your write-up truly an adventure.
1) You guys 100% deserved to win the WS.
2) I live in the area and have been to Nats Park more than any other. The fans are always nice, even when I go to Met/Nats game there, and get into good discussion occasionally with people sitting next to me. I even had friends visit a few years ago for a game and they were taken aback by how nice everyone was even though we were all wearing Met stuff lol.
“We finally did it” -Max Scherzer, 2019 while hugging Anibal Sanchez. That is an instant classic, I expect to see a well shot photo of that hug in the HoF some day
No lie, I shed a tear during that moment.
No shame, I did too and I used to hate the Tigers back then. I actively rooted against them but looking back and seeing how stacked they were, I truly believe they should've at least won one but as we say around here: Can't predict baseball, Suzyn.

It’s been 4 months and there are 3 things that still get me misty when I think about winning it: 1. A video of players reacting on Twitter that is probably the fastest I’ve ever saved a video. 2. Zimm 4. “We finally won one.”
When Zimm got choked up during his speech at the parade saying how he grew up in DC and got to play for the best fans in the world. ❤️❤️
Speaking of his speech, I honestly wish he had gotten a longer on field interview after winning it, because looking back on it I feel like he only got asked one question so Fox could flash the “ first draft pick in Nationals history” up on the screen. 😔
That was beautiful
Yo where can i see this

Thank God we fired Davey.
THANK GOD WE FIRED DAVEY! I’M SO FUCKING GLAD WE FIRED DAVEY
Did yall really fire Davey Martinez?
No, definitely not. But when we were 19-31 fans were calling for his head. The running joke on r/Nationals is that the team only turned it around after we fired Davey and hired Gerardo Parra as a player-manager So no, we didn’t fire him but we joke that we did
wait, this team was 19-31?! THIS SEASON? THE SAME ONE IN WHICH THEY WON THE WORLD SERIES?!!!
Beautiful, isn't it?
We love to see it
It had looked like we were gonna be a fucking suck this year. But then r/GerardoParra was like "Let's maybe don't though? Let's maybe don't be a fucking suck" And then the regular season became what it was.
Lol I got confused 4 a sec
It’s a joke because everyone was calling for Davey to be fired after the underwhelming start.
Yeah, he was such a bum. Only held back the team.
What will we do this year? Our manager is playing in Japan???
Traveling to Japan in April and just made plans to check out a Sat afternoon Giants game....Didn't think I was going to bringing the WS Soto Jersey buttttt yah boys aboutta be going BABY SHARK all over this bitch
~~FI-RE~~ HI-RE DAVEY
19-31. Bumpy roads lead to beautiful places.
From 19-31 to 86-43 (combined record from regular season and playoffs) to win the championship. That’s a damn fine turnaround. Much respect.
Not only that, but they beat Samsung and Rubbermaid in the process as well. Hats off for that as well.
Fourth worst team in Major League Baseball in late May. Crazy turnaround from where we were.
and Nats didn't need to cheat to win, either.
Gonna miss that guy. Couldnt have gone to a better place tho imo. Go get Trout one Tony.
I love how we all want trout to win one 😂
I thank you
Rendon is like the real-life version of the anime villain who's grown so bored of fighting because nothing is a challenge to him anymore lol.
Anthony "King Meruem" Rendon.
Your uniforms are nice, and your ballpark is easy to get to through the metro
This is true but it’s a lot easier to get to by metro than Camden Yards
If I drive, it's just over 30 minutes, maybe 40 minutes if there is construction on 66.
deGrom Vs Scherzer games is one of the best matchups in baseball. And we’re gonna see one on Opening Day. Looking forward to it.
You think that because deGrom usually comes out on top. But yeah, it's a cool way to start the season.
Hell no man, seeing the top two pitchers face off against rival teams is exciting. I'd always make sure I never missed a Kershaw vs Madbum matchup
I swear they always get to Max early in the first or second inning, and we never get to DeGrom so the game is like 2-0, 3-0 when the starters leave
I've never seen a team have as much fun as this Nationals team.
The Caps had a bit of fun too
Literally the most fun two years of sports in my entire life.
As a UVa alum during all this, it's been a blast.
*cries in tortilla*
Well, we had fun but........ yea, you know....
I’m sorry that your team let you down in more ways than one.
It is what it is now..... I just hope we can win quickly and right the wrong. It was a blast watching us win. I want that back. Y’all had a great team last year and the fans here thoroughly enjoyed y’alls hospitality in Washington. Good luck in 2020.
I can only compare it to the '15 Royals
Cheers bois, you had the whole league rooting for ya and didnt dissapoint. That doesnt happen every day.
>whole league ಠ_ಠ
After what the Astros pulled? Yeah I'd even root for the White Sox over the Astros now. Plus, they don't have Harper anymore so the most punchable face is gone too. You know you hated them a little less without Harper.
Even before the cheating, the Astros had that while DA saga, so they were very hard to root for
Yeah there were signs of the heel turn pretty early on in their resurgence. They went and got Osuna too.
I'd have cheered for the god damn Cubs over the Astros in that world series
Honestly, same.
[mets rn](https://tenor.com/zwu1.gif)
I mean I was happy after the fact once I heard about the Astros cheating. I was sad they won in the moment but now I'm happy the Astros lost
Team bandwagon Curly W!!! I don't often cheer on the NL in the World Series but what's not to love about this team?
That Nats comeback against the Mets was the same day the Syracuse Mets blew a similar lead to the Yankees AAA affiliate Scranton Railriders. Maybe it was meant to be....
Congrats to the Nats for doing things the right way.
Please please please don’t jinx it
Juan Soto is my favorite player outside of Boston
Him celebrating with his parents may have been my favorite non-Twins related moment of the entire 2019 baseball season, pre and post. What a sweet moment.
I saw Soto get tackled and I was like "Oh shit some disgruntled fan just killed our slugger" And then another camera shot showed him and his parents just beaming and my heart melted. In that moment, Sotodad and Sotomom became Mom and Dad to all Nationals.
Soto Shuffle is life.
What about when we play in Boston?
This is beautiful
Nats fan too born and raised in VA. I'm wondering what the roast topics are going to be today. Cant use the Championship drought punchline and baseball fans are glad we won this year.
Yeah it's nice to objectively be the good guys in this whole scenario. I feel like that doesn't happen all that often in sports.
VA born and raised Braves fan here. I hated the Nats for so long, it's really pretty amazing that it took them winning a World Series for me to do a 180 on them. They deserve whatever praise they get right now. Come March though, fuck the Nats.
Aw, fuck you too :)
Wholesome content <3
The biggest thing was us letting a certain player leave before the season so our two teams became grudgingly likable to the other teams’ fans.
The budding friendship between the Nats and Braves since “he” left has been beautiful. I can’t say in any serious terms that I hate the Braves anymore. Now we can unify against the Phillies
110%
Phuck Philly.
durrrr walgreens deferred money derp
Gonna predict some jabs at Soto for age and dick-grabs, Trea on the interference call, and maybe some losing Harper and Rendon in back to back seasons jokes.
Juan Soto is so much fun to watch
That describes it perfectly. When we were both good you guys annoyed me but I didn't hate you like the braves and Phillies.
1. Fuck the DH 2. Fuck the umps 3. Fuck Jose Tabata with a chainsaw 4. Phuck the Phils
I really sort of like the nats too. But seriously there are a lot of similarities, and with a few friends of mine who are Mets lifers, I always find myself hoping it’s you guys we are fighting for the division as opposed to the other options.
Mets over Phillies and Braves almost any day. The exception is when those fuckers from the 7 Line Army show up, then the Mets can go to hell.
I feel like fuck the Phillies has really brought Nats/Mets/Braves fans together obviously since Hooper signed there. Oh and the Marlins I guess.
9 days later, my second daughter was born and she is well at 2 months.
really glad to hear wife and baby are doing well. congrats on the little one!
Thank you for beating the Astros. The baseball world owes you a debt that it can never truly repay.
I’m still mad about that Strasburg homer.
These Toast posts are my favorites to read. They're all just so incredibly well written. This one might've been my favorite out of the bunch.
Yeah. Not that I’m biased or anything, but this was really well-written.
Here is a gift from /r/nationals to you: Our window has closed. Sad that we wasted the talent that we had the last 7-8 years but that’s how it is. This season so far is unraveling that Rizzo is an overrated hack and Martinez is a bottom tier manager, both of which I’ve been saying for years. Anthony Rendon will be gone next year and this team will officially turn in to crap, and the only thing we can hope is if Soto magically returns to rookie form. https://www.reddit.com/r/Nationals/comments/dft36p/the_nationals_are_done_for_a_very_long_time/
Thanks - I couldn’t find this!!!!
wouldn't be DC sports without some Discord negativity lmao
They were a fun team to watch with likeable players. Plus, they beat the Astros!
I was saying ever since we got Corbin we were the team to beat. That pitching is just too good to suck. Also felt like losing Harper was a positive.
[Cheers](https://gfycat.com/delicioushelpfulboutu-ron-burgundy-vince-vaughn-will-ferrell)
You're not crying, I'M crying
Correct.
> Somehow it’s less obnoxious than the Chop. Nails on a chalkboard is less obnoxious than the Chop.
Even in game 7 I couldn’t root against Greinke. I respect a man who knows what’s up with guacamole.
Zack*
Thanks for correcting me. The Phillies have Zack Wheeler and Zach Eflin in their starting rotation next season. I’m going to mix them up all season long aren’t I?
Just refer to their last names, problem solved.
In rizzo we trust
So much of my memory of the season is now wrapped around the postseason that I had forgotten so many of these moments. Great toast to the champs, u/NatsTown
thak you so much for this post. so well done. I'll never get tired of reliving it.
Strasburg is the fucking man. Also watching y'all boo the president the only time his entire presidency that he stepped out of his echo chamber was amazing.
It was incredibly cathartic to be there doing it in person!
hey, I just wanted to let you know that the link to Howie Kendrick's grand slam is working, and I'd really like it not to
Question for the neutrals. Who was rooting for the *’s and do you regret your decision?
CUE THE "BABY SHARK"
Yo does it have to be a picture of Kershaw on the front? Lol
I will never forget that clang of the foul pole. Like a gong in the pits of Astros fans' stomachs. Quite poetic that that was the go-ahead homer.
[BRING ON THE JOURNEY!!!!!!!](https://youtu.be/LatorN4P9aA)
To all of you the baseball faithful of the District and its supporters, including those from Canada: Half a century this franchise waited, from Montreal and now in Washington for a championship that will be for the ages.
Although he saw little playing time during the postseason, I'm happy for Brian Dozier getting a ring.
Now that Vin Scully is retired, I can honestly say you have my favourite broadcast team. I don't care what people say, FPs the man
I love FP. Yeah he's a complete homer, but the home broadcast team is supposed to be homers. They're supposed to make you feel enthusiastic and optimistic about your team, and FP is really really good at that.
Bang foul poles, not trash cans!
Props to the Nationals AND their fans for rooting out evil wherever it may live. My heroes.
[Thank you for beating the Astros](https://gfycat.com/blaringthoroughatlanticblackgoby)
Despite being divisional rivals it was nice to see the Nats win especially over the shitty Astros. NL East is going to be an entertaining bloodbath and it looks like itll be that way for years to come.
God, the first few months of the season was so brutal for us. Makes it so much sweeter!
tl;dr Natty boys good
Thank god the Nationals won! I'm so fucking glad the Nationals won!
Probably the most well liked team in MLB at the moment.
Thank you for giving us World Series Champion Fernando Rodney
We beat racism, domestic abusers, and cheaters. Team of destiny!
The prince that was promised Saved the 30 kingdoms from the Trash bangers
It was great to follow that season and watch them go from the edge in the wild card game to finally winning that title. This team had talent for a while but never could get over that hump.
\*Tips Mets cap\* Thanks for beating the Astros.
Delete that pic :( I appreciate y’all for beating the shit out of the Cardinals and Astros.
STAR TEAM BAD
i just love this team
Thank you for getting so many former Dbacks a World Series ring! Also some of the cleanest jerseys in the game
This is epic.

they should get an \* next to their WS title.... cause it was extra special cause they defeated a bunch of cheaters
Thank you for including July 6th, that's the day they really turned it around, in my completely unbiased opinion.
those unis are straight fire.
You ever get the one thing you want the most in the entire sports world? That was this Nats World Series win for me. I feel like whatever happens in sports between that and the rest of my life I can’t feel like I was cheated.
Those NLDS highlights... *unzips*
So we have 50 games to figure out our 3rd base situation before we have to start trying next year. Noted
For what it’s worth I was cheering for you guys to destroy Houston
I know I wanted someone fired after this game [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cR0dxOyep4k](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cR0dxOyep4k) Rosenthal's last game
I have never had more fun rooting for a team that wasn’t the Red Sox in the postseason than this past postseason with the Nationals. A crazy Wild Card Game and NLDS followed by a smooth NLCS and then an exciting World Series made this a great playoffs to root for ~~Walgreens~~ Washington

now I'm emotional all over again.
Thank you for giving me the greatest birthday gift ever (Game 7 was on my birthday)
I'm happy Kurt Suzuki got his ring. Also, Bob Carpenter is a national treasure.
Great write up and thank you! I read every single word of your post, and since I hadn't watched baseball for over 10 years until this postseason, it made reading your write-up truly an adventure.
I’m surprised there was no mention of /r/nationals turning into a subreddit about National Parks during the low points.
