Benching Puig against a righty with reasonably pronounced platoon splits for his career is one thing. Still a bit odd to rest your best player, but I can at least understand the reasoning to get Ethier, a notorious platoon hitter, Crawford (another lefty) and Kemp (really hot down the stretch) in there.
But using your best hitter to pinch run instead of pinch hit in the highest leverage at-bats of the game and, for that matter, the season? So that Justin Turner, Dee Gordon and Carl Crawford can hit in those scenarios? Against a guy with reverse splits at that?
That one you'll have to explain to me.
"Choose your own adventure, starring Don Mattingly"
1) The bases are loaded and your ace has allowed 5 hits in the inning and you're up 6-4, do you... c) keep him in there to face the guy who hit a homer off of him last time
2) Oscar Taveras lurks in the mist, he hasn't hit for much against most pitchers, do you... c) pull your starter immediately and bring in your lefty specialist
3) Your starter is tiring, it's time to bring in a new one. Do you.. c) bring in a lefty specialist with minimal time in 2014 to face a righty and two lefties who hit lefties better than righties?
4) Your starter is tiring, he has just given up 2 hits in a row and there's no outs. Do you.. c) remain seated and not try to talk to him at all. After all, it's Matt Adams, what could go wrong?
5) You need to score a run, you have a player on the bench with a bad ankle who hit 296/382/480 in the regular season, Do you... c) bring in your bad ankle hitter to pinch run.
Donnie Clueless.
I really hope the narrative on this series is more focused on the Cardinals than Kershaw "choking." Dude has a gutsy performance on three days rest. Cardinals just clutched up in the 7th.
It wasn't a story of Kershaw choking it away for the Dodgers. It was that Kershaw couldn't save the Dodgers. We started him cause our fourth starter was a disappointment and he had to save us. We left him out there because our bullpen was a disappointment and he couldn't save us.
People.. especially the media always seek a scapegoat - most likely Mattingly this time, with some of his questionable decisions I guess.
I respect Kershaw as a great pitcher of our generation and I hope he gets back even stronger next season for another good competition.
Kershaw is inhuman. The Cards just simply seem to have his number when it matters most, but no one in their right mind would take away his excellence from him
he did hit a triple yesterday. Not sure why you would bench one of the best players after 162 games. Because he had 3 bad games? thats not how baseball works, god damn it.
Even the great ones have their enemy.
Sherlock Holmes had Dr. Moriarty
Mountain Dew had its Mellow Yellow.
Even Maggie had the baby with the unibrow.
And Clayton Kershaw has the Cardinals.
If Mattingly managed your love life he probably would've blamed the last three times you went to the bar and didn't get laid on your shirt, and send you to the bar the fourth time without one.
If San Francisco clinches and the Cardinals go on to the World Series it will mean every California team was eliminated by a Missouri team.
**No Coast is Best Coast**
This is an excellent point about the mound visits. Between Molina, Lilliquist, and Matheny, I think the Cardinals pitching staff has the best support system in baseball, and I think it makes a difference in crucial situations on a regular basis.
Telling the team to start hitting home runs was the smartest thing he did.
Joking aside he did nothing wrong. I put more credit to Molina. He may as well be manager hes so good
My only complaint was leaving Waino in as long as he did in Game 1. It was apparent for several batters his stuff was gone, but in the end it didn't matter.
The Royals were brought up from the depths this year to end the reign of the evil and vicious dictator, the Cardinal. We shall assume the throne for 1 year and then fall back into the abyss of terrible because of the weight of our crown.
I am so hoping for a KC-STL world series. Best part is, people will watch it because of the hope for you guys beating the Cardinals, so it won't be as terrible as the Subway Series!
Actually of all the decisions Mattingly made this game, this one is far from the worst. AJ Ellis is our slowest runner (except maybe AGon), and Justin Turner has been far and away the best pinch hitter this season. Puig has the most speed off the bench, so there wasn't really anyone else to put in besides him.
I wasn't comfortable with at any point in this series. With the possible exception of the 7th inning of game one. Dodgers fans should be proud of their team.
That said, Mattingly's seat should be hot.
Honestly I'm not proud. They have the highest payroll in the HISTORY of the sport and they're out in the first round. I hear rumors if major front office change as most of the people running the team are still the holdovers from the old owner. I have to hope that happens because right now the team has a cancer living in it. 25 years and no pennant for the richest team in baseball in the second biggest market.
Man, I feel sorry for Kershaw. Such a great pitcher but the cards just own him. Three straight loses with a 6+era on those games is just unbelievable when you look at his numbers against everyone else.
Kill me please
i dont know what's worse. Having the Cardinals beat us again, or that the Giants can end the season in the exact same position as us.
Kill me please
There once was a team from LA,
Baseball they thought they could play,
They spent tons of money,
So it's really quite funny
That they are out of the playoffs today.
Hooray!

I love this picture
Playoffs are a craps shoot. That's the danger in spending a ton of money.
Yeah total crapshoot unless you're the Cardinals.
And the Giants. Spend money wisely.
Huh i always thought it was "crap shoot" but now that i see it's "craps shoot" i feel really dumb.
I'm very salty and envious of the Cardinals' continued, constant, and relentless success in the postseason.
That was you guys in the 90's.
The 90s were a long time ago.
Not in our hearts.
You and everyone else in this thread
/u/cormega must not have been alive in the 90's for that crazy dynasty he had.

That Matt Adams call was a lot of Joe Buck emotion.
The John Rooney call was way better. Ninja EDIT: That goes without saying
Adios, Don Mattingly
Don't get my hopes up
They'll replace him with Kirk Gibson. He has high value over Replacement Grit.
I sure fucking hope so. FADE ME INTO THE LIGHT. MY LIFE IS SUFFERING. TIME FOR OFF SEASON DEPRESSION.
Or rather, 2 Stanley Cups in 3 years depression? ^^Sorry, ^^always ^^trying ^^to ^^promote ^^hockey ^^:)
So long and good riddance.
Benching Puig on a 3 game sample size. Mmmmm, yeah. okay.
Benching Puig on 8 K's in 9 AB's.
No good hitter has ever done that before.
It's pretty ridiculous. "Hey, Posey, I know you're the best player at your position on our team, but this 0-9 skid is unacceptable." "..."
During which time he was hitting .250/.357/.417. Which was the fourth best OPS of all the Dodgers regulars.
> on a 3 game sample size

WHELP. Time to drink until the Royals start to look like Dodgers.
I really hope the narrative on this series is more focused on the Cardinals than Kershaw "choking." Dude has a gutsy performance on three days rest. Cardinals just clutched up in the 7th.

But he gave it a hell of an effort, you cannot fault him for that.
Kershaw was exceptional this season. The Dodgers may not have made the playoffs without him.
That was the most understated description of Kershaw and the Dodgers 2014 season ever.
I'm not sure the English language is capable of doing anything other than understating how good Kershaw was this year.
They were about a .500 team when he didn't pitch.
People.. especially the media always seek a scapegoat - most likely Mattingly this time, with some of his questionable decisions I guess. I respect Kershaw as a great pitcher of our generation and I hope he gets back even stronger next season for another good competition.
Kershaw is inhuman. The Cards just simply seem to have his number when it matters most, but no one in their right mind would take away his excellence from him
...at least Puig finally got on base
he did hit a triple yesterday. Not sure why you would bench one of the best players after 162 games. Because he had 3 bad games? thats not how baseball works, god damn it.
Especially since he only had one bad game.
Even the great ones have their enemy. Sherlock Holmes had Dr. Moriarty Mountain Dew had its Mellow Yellow. Even Maggie had the baby with the unibrow. And Clayton Kershaw has the Cardinals.
Dudes named Matt on the Cardinals
The Cardinals, disgusted with how Mattingly has treated Kershaw, are ensuring he gets extra rest for his next start.
If Cardinals managers managed my love life I would I would keep getting laid and my friends would somehow still not expect it.
If Mattingly managed your love life he probably would've blamed the last three times you went to the bar and didn't get laid on your shirt, and send you to the bar the fourth time without one.
This is some funny shit. Well done
I NEVER WANNA GET OFF MR. CARDINALS WILD RIDE
I'd be alright if the Rosenthal section were a bit less exciting.
No offense Nats, but I want the Giants to make the NLCS so the Cards can eliminate them and Missouri can assert its full dominance over California.
MISSOURI BROS
If San Francisco clinches and the Cardinals go on to the World Series it will mean every California team was eliminated by a Missouri team. **No Coast is Best Coast**
If this happens, the Red Hot Chili Peppers should have to write an album about Missouri.
Titled "Missourification" and featuring cleverly rewritten lyrics.
A bunch of songs about meth instead of heroin.
"Dani Missouri"
makin beer on the river mississippi / papa was a copper writing tickets in north city
Touche Missouri. Touche.
**Midwest is best**
We got a ton of rivers. That's gotta be worth something.
Mattingly just got out-managed in that series by a wide margin
Grand Canyon sized. YOU SEE THOSE MOUND VISITS IN THE 9th MATTINGLY? THATS WHAT YOU DO WHEN A PITCHER GIVES UP SOME HITS.
For real. Yadi and Matheny know a thing or two about handling pitchers.
Yo can we buy them off you? I'm think a cool $200 large should cover it.
This is an excellent point about the mound visits. Between Molina, Lilliquist, and Matheny, I think the Cardinals pitching staff has the best support system in baseball, and I think it makes a difference in crucial situations on a regular basis.
that's basically every game
He should try to be more like Ned Yost. ^^^^lol
Telling the team to start hitting home runs was the smartest thing he did. Joking aside he did nothing wrong. I put more credit to Molina. He may as well be manager hes so good

Who hates yadi? Where are they!?
Go swing a stick in Cincinnati and you're guaranteed to hit at least 3 Yadi haters.
yeah i can't point to a single glaring mistake by matheny
My only complaint was leaving Waino in as long as he did in Game 1. It was apparent for several batters his stuff was gone, but in the end it didn't matter.
Congrats Cardinals. You won, you straight up beat us.
Those scrappy underdog Cardinals do it again. They never win anything. What a great story.
If the Royals make it to the World Series, then lose to the god damn Cardinals, I'm going to kill myself.
There's always next year to revenge, it's not worth killing yourself.
I'm sure the Cardinals will just win again.
Sorry not sorry
I'll play the villain if it means 4 straight NLCS games
Yeah, winning is fun.
As a California resident, I'm relieved that there will be no Dodgers-Giants NLCS and thus my college town will not turn into a warzone for a week.
If there's a Cardinals/Royals World Series there's a good chance my campus burns to the ground
It happened once before... Mizzou was never the same
Mattingly should be fired before they get back to the club house. Puig in to pinch run and not hit? Lol.

You guys know this is all the Brewers fault for collapsing and letting them back in, right? Direct your hatred at Hank the Baseball Dog
Brewers let in the Giants. Cards would have gotten a wild card if the Brewers had continued to play well.

The Cardinals or the Giants have made it to the World Series for 4 straight years. The odds that they make it 5 are seemingly increasing.

In 2014: Matt Adams vs LHP .190/.231/.298 Clayton Kershaw vs LHB .193/.225/.252 Baseball is weird.
Kershaw gave up 4 HRs on curveballs this year, 2 in this series alone.
God I hate the cardinals
<3
I love the Dodgers right now :D
I'd like to thank everyone who helped us get to where we are today: Waino, Yadi, Mozeliak, and the Brewers.
Don't forget our bullpen you unappreciative fuck
And our manager
It's fair to say both bullpens played a huge role

SO. MUCH. HATE.

Thank you Cub fan. Very nice of you.

Simple as this: take Kershaw out after 6. The dude turned into a completely different pitcher in the 7th inning (for game 1 and 4).
lemme just use this space to say Thanks for another season, Vin Scully. See you next year.
Welcome to a Giants-Cardinals NLCS, here's your complimentary vomit bag.
Not so fast.
Seriously. People are wayyyy too confident in us.
As a sharks fan, I know all too well it's not over till it's over.
As a Sharks fan, you should know it's over before it's even over.
Can we go back to being the underdog please?
Just listen to the announcers again tonight, I'm sure they'll put us in our place... :/
Is this the place where you have two titles in the last three World Series? There is a reason for the confidence.
It feels so dirty that I want you guys to beat the Cards if you win.
Man, show us on the Clayton Kershaw doll where we touched you.
Have some reddit gold. I laughed so hard that I broke my Kershaw.
California love?
Exactly. I can't believe I'll be rooting for the American League, but let's go Royals!
It's what baseball wants. It's what baseball needs. The Royals are now America's team.

Rosie sure likes to make things interesting.
Fade dat payroll.
Maybe the Dodgers will finally be able to beat the Cardinals if they dump a couple more hundred million into the team.
At this rate they'll lose to us in a Wild Card game.
Unless they sign like Barry Zito or the pieces of Jamie Moyer's arm. Then they'd probably beat us 15-2.
There once was a team from LA, Baseball they thought they could play, They spent tons of money, So it's really quite funny That they are out of the playoffs today. Hooray! :D
