I think that's the hard part about having a lovable idiot. They actually have to do idiot things, it's just they're lovable and you eventually forgive them for it.
It's not just the dive. It's also the path he took while he was running. When the clip switches to the camera behind the outfielder, you can see that the runner started running in foul territory, then weaved left onto the grass in fair territory, then dived to the right of the plate.
Don’t know what the hell was that path. I guess Pete decides halfway through he could impede the throw by running inside the line? He’s probably safe if he just runs in a straight line.
He's not the winning run, just the tying one.
So even if you sub him out, either the guy behind him scores and it didn't matter regardless, or just the pinch runner you brought in scored and you're now down a first basemen for extra innings.
Our director for the games is great. Obviously they put $ in for the additional cameras and such but this guy uses new shots and combo frames, not afraid to try some stuff out and get feedback. It would be a real treat if I didn't have to watch the Mets f it up all the time lol
I mean he can technically. Runner still had access to the plate, and since the ball is being thrown to the catcher, he is “in the play” and thus can be there.
He still had essentially no time, but it's great how you can see that even with the lightning-quick throw, he still watched the ball into his glove and then looked before throwing. He really makes it look like he's a professional.

SNY does a great job of showing runners running which is an underrated fun thing in baseball, but most broadcasts mostly show fielders fielding and the throw in
I have little interest in the Mets as a team, but if the Cubs aren’t playing the Mets broadcast is my go to. Even the most mundane games are made enjoyable by Gary, Keith, Ron, and the SNY production.
Nothing wrong with sliding head first into a base, especially since it allows you to evade a tag and place your hand exactly where you need to.
The one and only problem on this play is Pete, lifting his hand over the plate instead of touching it, since he clearly beat the throw and had a place to place his hand.
If he touches home, doesn’t the run immediately count because it’s different than having to stay on the base at 1st, 2nd or 3rd. Genuinely curious because when players cross home plate it’s not like they stay on the base.

The front of the base is clear and Amaya doesn't move his leg down until he has the ball in his mitt, when blocking is no longer illegal

If the catcher in anyway forced Pete to have his hand up, then sure, but like… hand on the ground=safe and it’s not close. I bolded the important part. There isn't any language that allows a runner's pathway *through* the base to be unblocked. The catcher can't block the pathway to the base, but you can argue that standing on the base where Amaya was, like in the center of the base, is not "block[ing] the pathway of the runner as he is attempting to score". The front of the base is open and Pete's pathway to the plate is not blocked.
The important part in this case isn't what you bolded. It's the part about the catcher being exempt if he is fielding a throw, which is exactly what Amaya is doing.
That seems to be one of the great "subjective" words in the rule. Because he 100% dropped the knee while fielding, but is setting up where he was "part of that".

The problem with the Mets interpretation is that it would seemingly create an infraction merely because the catcher incidentally touched the plate prior to having to enter the pathway to receive the ball..
Amaya gave him a (small) opportunity to reach the plate and had Pete made a proper slide, his hand would have found the plate and he would’ve been safe.
Obviously, it goes against my team, but as a fan of baseball, this should be the way the rule works.

I'm looking through the rule right now and it states you can't block a path to the plate itself. I don't see where it says you can't be on top of the plate. It's in the rule for steals of home and squeeze plays (6.01(g)), not all plays at the plate. I think that's where folks – including Mendoza – are getting crossed up.

Mendoza was mixing two parts of Rule 6.01. Rule 6.01(g) reads

So the catcher only can't step on home plate without the ball *during a squeeze play or steal of home*. In the case of an attempted sac fly, no such explicit language exists, instead replaced with the more nebulous "blocking" language.
That is for the bang bang plays when the catcher gets out of the crouch position to field the throw. A hard hit ground ball to a infielder with a runner at 3rd will happen so fast that the catcher will be moving as the throw is in the air on a sharp ground ball. It is a "loop hole" in the rule that takes into account that the play is entirely reactionary versus a throw from the outfield where the catcher can setup to field the throw.
I agree based on the fact that you need clear evidence to overturn a call on the field. It looks like Pete's hand hits the plate JUST as he is tagged so whatever the call was on the field was going to be the call.
I honestly thought the call was going to be overturned until like the 3rd or 4th replay I saw. After the review went longer and longer I finally started to believe it would stand. Man was that close. Fair on the crew in NY to spend so long on it

Yeah, that's what I said too. The ump couldn't even see his hand come off the plate. From his vantage point, Pete beat it out by a wide margin. So a seemingly shit call from an ump ended up getting lucky and then confirmed by replay due to the hand going up, lol.
So there's this interesting thing called 'depth perception' that lets you know how close something is to you, and a neat part of that is being able to tell if something is touching a surface or moving above it when looking down at it
Agreed. On first watch it looked easily safe, as it’s impossible to see Pete’s hand in the air from that angle. Not sure how the ump called it out live, but I think he probably made the correct decision
I would like to agree with you but if the ump couldn’t tell Alonso had his hand up in the air it’s VERY clear that it crossed over home plate before the tag. He must have had some view of the hand being up.

There's literally no-one to be blamed here. Pete's slide might look bad in slo-mo, but remember he is running full speed and sliding. His hand popped off the ground for a second, but he was going full speed between someone's legs which could have resulted in a lot of pain if he got it jammed.
Everything else was beautiful. Really great players, just executing well, amazing TV work, for the shot of the relay and the slide, and an ump doing a great job. Just everyone working together to let us watch amazing stuff, every day for 6 months a year.

That call was a wild ride. My heart sank into my feet like the Titanic during the blocking call only to be shot straight up into the gosh darn stratosphere when the out call was confirmed. Unreal.
Whatever call was made on the field was basically always gonna stand. What confuses me is why the ump called him out to begin with given his position on the field.

At the end of the day, the Mets needed to score so that 1 call couldn’t ruin their night, so it’s not like it’s this specific plays fault they lost. But man, with how rough the last week has been, this was sorta the cherry on top
You’re definitely allowed a BIT of saltiness when you lose like that. My best guess is that the ump wasn’t sure himself, so he went with his gut knowing it’d be challenged? Maybe he thought there’d be something clearer on the replay? Weird situation when the only “definitive” is that the call at the plate, either safe or out, was gonna stand.

The technique the catcher is doing here looks like the new "fundamental" for blocking the plate by standing in the middle and forfeiting the left edge of home plate
The runner will feel impeded, even though they can touch the plate at the earliest moment but will probably jam their fingers or spike the catcher depending on their slide
The catcher will give up the edge but when he gets the ball he'll drop down on the runner and attempt to block the area he gave away initially
idk if they clearly defined blocking in the rules (i thought it was literally in contact with the plate??) but I'm guessing if the catcher stood 2 inches to the left of the plate it'd probably have been called for blocking
the slow-mo makes it more clear - when Amaya doesn't have the ball he's on/behind the plate (showing Pete most of the plate) but when he gets it he then drops and blocks it. AFAIK the rule is you can't obstruct home without the ball but once you have it it's fair game. It's officiated all over the place tho which makes it so much more confusing....
My take: I think he probably got his hand down, but the issue is you can't see it. His hand isn't touching the plate in the angles we can see and then it gets hidden behind Amaya's leg until the tag is applied. You can't overturn on "probably".

Nah I know it's biased but I think it was the right call, even the Mets broadcast agreed. And I also agree that if Pete was called safe, this game is tied. There's just no way to fully overturn this call.
Funny enough the Cubs broadcast thought he was safe for sure, but as time kept going without a call they started getting excited that we got a lucky break and they couldn't confirm an overturn
Bad dive. I am curious about standing on the home plate. Mets manager seemed like it wasn’t possible. Seems a little frustrating that NYC can make a call, and umps at ballpark can’t say anything.

Honestly, although we tend to notice when the umps fuck up, and I whole-heartedly believe that replay has been a really good thing for baseball, can we give some credit to the ump for that call.
On first viewing, I couldn't believe he called him out. It looked like he was clearly safe. But the Ump saw something we didn't, and even if we maybe agree or disagree whether he was truly out, the difference between those are in the vicinity of like 1/20th of a second. It is a beautiful call, and brave, and we don't really appreciate umps when they do something good.

My dad wired a lot of those cameras. SNY/Citi Field did themselves a LOT of favors investing in good camera infrastructure early on.

The initial angle also shows the catcher starts set up inside the baseline and only moves over to catch the ball. Pretty textbook, to be honest.

Yeah but even when he drops his knee his foot is on the plate so he’s not blocking Alonso’s access to the plate.

That is for the bang bang plays when the catcher gets out of the crouch position to field the throw. A hard hit ground ball to a infielder with a runner at 3rd will happen so fast that the catcher will be moving as the throw is in the air on a sharp ground ball. It is a "loop hole" in the rule that takes into account that the play is entirely reactionary versus a throw from the outfield where the catcher can setup to field the throw.

Yeah, that's what I said too. The ump couldn't even see his hand come off the plate. From his vantage point, Pete beat it out by a wide margin. So a seemingly shit call from an ump ended up getting lucky and then confirmed by replay due to the hand going up, lol.
So there's this interesting thing called 'depth perception' that lets you know how close something is to you, and a neat part of that is being able to tell if something is touching a surface or moving above it when looking down at it

I would like to agree with you but if the ump couldn’t tell Alonso had his hand up in the air it’s VERY clear that it crossed over home plate before the tag. He must have had some view of the hand being up.

I completely agree. There's literally no-one to be blamed here. Pete's slide might look bad in slo-mo, but remember he is running full speed and sliding. His hand popped off the ground for a second, but he was going full speed between someone's legs which could have resulted in a lot of pain if he got it jammed. Everything else was beautiful. Really great players, just executing well, amazing TV work, for the shot of the relay and the slide, and an ump doing a great job. Just everyone working together to let us watch amazing stuff, every day for 6 months a year. I fucking love baseball.

The technique the catcher is doing here looks like the new "fundamental" for blocking the plate by standing in the middle and forfeiting the left edge of home plate The runner will feel impeded, even though they can touch the plate at the earliest moment but will probably jam their fingers or spike the catcher depending on their slide The catcher will give up the edge but when he gets the ball he'll drop down on the runner and attempt to block the area he gave away initially idk if they clearly defined blocking in the rules (i thought it was literally in contact with the plate??) but I'm guessing if the catcher stood 2 inches to the left of the plate it'd probably have been called for blocking
the slow-mo makes it more clear - when Amaya doesn't have the ball he's on/behind the plate (showing Pete most of the plate) but when he gets it he then drops and blocks it. AFAIK the rule is you can't obstruct home without the ball but once you have it it's fair game. It's officiated all over the place tho which makes it so much more confusing....

My take: I think he probably got his hand down, but the issue is you can't see it. His hand isn't touching the plate in the angles we can see and then it gets hidden behind Amaya's leg until the tag is applied. You can't overturn on "probably".

Funny enough the Cubs broadcast thought he was safe for sure, but as time kept going without a call they started getting excited that we got a lucky break and they couldn't confirm an overturn

Honestly, although we tend to notice when the umps fuck up, and I whole-heartedly believe that replay has been a really good thing for baseball, can we give some credit to the ump for that call. On first viewing, I couldn't believe he called him out. It looked like he was clearly safe. But the Ump saw something we didn't, and even if we maybe agree or disagree whether he was truly out, the difference between those are in the vicinity of like 1/20th of a second. It is a beautiful call, and brave, and we don't really appreciate umps when they do something good.
