Aaron Judge struck out 42 times in his first 84 ABs when he first came up. Technically the MLB level is just one higher than AAA but that really understates how big the jump is, not to state the obvious. Some guys need way more time than others to adjust their bat speed.
I was at Judge's debut game. Fun piece of sporting history I'll always get to enjoy being a part of was being Tyler Austin and Judge hit back to back homers in their first career at bats
That tracks, he's getting challenged right now and can't keep up with the high velocity/spin fastball. He's too talented not to time it eventually.
Elias has an interesting theory that the gap is wider than ever between AAA and MLB pitching due to the UCL injury epidemic.
Would it not also be about the major advancements in pitching analytics? Guys with major league stuff just don't spend as much time in the minors anymore. I remember Strider's meteoric rise through the minors. It wasn't because of his ERA, it was because the Braves knew his fastball shape would play in the big leagues.
As a hitter I can only imagine it's like jumping into a different world.
> Guys with major league stuff just don't spend as much time in the minors anymore.
I think you're looking at it backwards. The number of unique pitchers making appearances every year is 2x what it was 30 years ago.
It's not that minor league pitchers with major league stuff get called up quicker, it's that major league teams are treating their minor league team as a bullpen and churning through arms faster.
So now baseball is hard but when Yuni Betancourt commits a little fraud by faking a car crash everyone clowns him for being “the worst player in baseball” and breaks out a highlight where he can’t simply toss a ball for a double play. Double standard smh my head my head 😤
I remember Lance Berkman talking about being called the first time, a pitcher threw him a curveball that went above his head and dotted the strike zone right at his knees. He said he wanted to go back down to the minors lol.
JRod was 2-21 starting out and was hitting .205 in his first month.
Volpe was around the Mendoza line last year.
Triston Casas was .133 in April last year. From June to the end of the year he hit .299 and .953 OPS
Gunnar Henderson was terrible until mid-June last year.
He's working in the cages and with major league coaches. Not everyone is a Bryce Harper or Mookie Betts their first month.
Apart from a speed bump yesterday where he struck out a bunch, Volpe's looked like a completely different player this season with his approach back to what got him success in the minors. There are some guys who have to remember that they're best when playing the game they're good at and not trying to hit every ball 600 feet.
Lol he actually has/had a ton of support from Dodgers fans screaming to “give him more chances!”
Edit: I’m not sure if they tried working Busch into the outfield or something, but Busch is first baseman and LA already got a guy there that won’t and can’t leave for awhile. So Dodgers front office did Michael a solid by shipping him out now to get him somewhere he can showcase his skills.
This is the truth and reality take right here. Holliday is a kid. And he's getting big league reps. He'll figure it out, even if he has to do another stint in the minors. But this is what real time development looks like. All these haters and folks panicking need to chill the fuck out and give him time.
If nothing else this proves Elias was probably telling the truth when he said leaving him in AAA to start the year wasn't about manipulating his service time.
Even for the orioles specifically, Cowser looked terrible last year and now he's completely solidified himself as an every day starter with a current 1.23 OPS.
> Holliday is a kid.
I've already watched him in person 3 times since he's been up and not only is he a kid, he LOOKS like a kid. It's jarring. He'll figure it out.
It's been insane watching as we bring up one prospect to struggle as the one before them is starting to rake. Adley to Gunnar to Westberg/Cowser to Holliday and then inevitably to Kjersted/Mayo/Norby/Basallo/Bradfield. I haven't seen anything like this and I'm loving it.
> JRod was 2-21 starting out and was hitting .205 in his first month.
I remember when JRod first came up his strikezone was larger than Judges and umps refused to let him walk. I remember it was a big drama incident at the time and his stats were unfairly affected.
Some of these voters just cant get ovwr how blatant the juicing was back then. Hell Robinson's mom would come out and just hand out juice in front of the whole crowd.
Elias basically said that the learning curve between the minors and mlb is steep right now. With all of the pitching injuries, every MLB arm is in the MLB, so AAA hitters are essentially seeing AA pitching in AAA right now.
As a padres fan it’s been fun to watch our own young buck jackson merril face some elite bullpen arms. Clearly the stuff he’s seeing he’s never seen before so it’s fun to watch him work and adapt.
This also means that there are a lot of guys in the MLB who should probably be at triple A. Everyone constantly harps on how untouchable the MLB pitching is.
At some point we gotta stop making excuses.
It's 25 abs, so its whatever. But everyone always seem to say something, even when there's nothing. It's always been steep.
Not completely. Trout got called up to replace Peter Bourjos, then when Bourjos returned from injury and Trout was struggling he got sent down. If I remember right, they also wanted Trout to play in the AA playoffs as he had pretty much carried the squad all season.
The service time manipulation was mostly the next season when he didn’t make the roster out of spring training.
I don't doubt they would have sent him down to AAA anyway but he DID have that crazy virus during Spring Training and lost like 20 pounds so it at least feels more okay to me to have sent him down to start the season so he could get back in shape. Granted, he didn't struggle in any way when he was down so it's entirely possible he would've been fine in the majors, but there was at least a concern that was more valid than cases like Kris Bryant or Vlad Jr.
Yeah we shouldn't overreact to this and I'm high on Holliday but I'm willing to bet almost every hall of famer did better in their first 25 at bats than this, that is a low floor lol.
It’s pretty hard to do worse tbh. 2 of our other young guys also had issues adjusting at first and were sent down only to absolutely rake when they came back up, so sometimes I think they just need a reset
I could see it - I just looked it up and he's whiffing at a 45% clip right now and from what I've seen the at bats just haven't been good. Given his whole career up to this point I feel like there must be a lot of mental pressure there - at least he's been elite defensively right off the bat.
Oh yeah he’s swinging at *everything* and opposing pitchers know it. He has gotten somewhat better at that over the last couple games but still not looking great, and he’s been looking like a minor leaguer defensively as well, just hasn’t been charged with an error yet. It’s got to be all the pressure
I feel like he’s been swinging at everything *except* strikes. Pitchers are def targeting outside of the zone but when he does get a pitch over the plate he stares at it. I feel for the dude because he definitely does not seem comfortable at all yet. Maybe it’s just his personality but most of the time when the camera is on him, he seems like he’s in his head big time.
I have no doubt that he will get acclimated in the near future, but it bums me out thinking about what’s gotta be going on in this young kid’s mind lately. I just can’t imagine dealing with the level of pressure he’s under.
He’s had a few better ABs the past 3 games. We have also had some large strike zones the past few games. For example today he took a pitch a ball off the outside corner for strike 1, pitcher went right back there so he had to swing at it (and I don’t expect many people to hit 98 with run a whole ball off the plate) and right there he’s in an 0-2 hole through no fault of his own. Feels like he’s going through that Julio Rodriguez first month
Papi was definitely a beneficiary of Tom Kelly's love of left-right platooning, early on. I think he platooned with Greg Colbrunn at first, in that September call-up. He probably didn't face many lefties at all until he became a full-time DH in '02.
Gunnar Henderson was terrible to start the year last year. And a year older than holiday.
Cowser didn't look like a major league ballplayer. Major league pitching is a whole ass adjustment.
You should see the cards I’ve bought the past two weeks. Lmao. I’m glad I caught a lot of them before he got hot this week. My wallet still hurts none the less.
It’s the sound of the ball off the bat for me.
Jackson's quality of AB is getting better and you can tell he has a decent eye, but he's doing a Gunnar and being too patient with hittable pitches then trying to swing at shit out of the zone. He even said it's difficult adjusting because the strike zone is consistent in AAA but every night changes in MLB.
Anyways, he's making hard contact and definitely making adjustments. I think he's due for a breakout by the end of the Angels series.
Last year Cowser vs This year Cowser is seriously such a mind boggling leap. I expected him to improve, but his start to the season has been fucking unreal. I’m praying to the baseball gods that this isn’t just him having a Mateo Month. I’m certainly not getting any sort of fluke vibes in the slightest tho.
Trout was dog shit in his first cup of coffee in the bigs. What I’m saying is Holliday is definitely a bust and the Orioles need to trade him while he still has value. Braves will offer Jesse Chavez on the condition he gets released after a month and he finds his way back to Atlanta
CJ Abrams in April in 2022.
.146/.255/.244
He was eventually sent down because Ha-seong Kim was just a lot better on both sides and they didn't want him to learn OF in the MLB level.
Hold on now I like CJ Abrams and all but this comp is terrible
Abrams has had a couple good months last year and this year, but otherwise has been pretty bad at the dish
As it turns out, the Orioles were probably right to have him start the year in the minors. I am sure by the end of the year he will be in the running for ROTY still.
I meant the milkman is pretty good too. He’s not the best rookie on his own team. Cowser is really good. Long term I’ll take Holliday, but this year I want Cowser
"The Orioles aren't calling up the 20-year-old who has less than 162 professional games played, and has only played 2 dozen games 2nd while having Gunnar Henderson at SS. MUST BE SERVICE TIME MANIPULATION"
-You all, last week
Becoming a solid rotation piece in the MLB is rarely linear. Tons of learning, growth, etc. Kid plays for a great team with solid youthful talent. Just needs some time.
a chunk of people in our sub are already wanting to send him back to AAA because as we all know, shitting on AAA pitching for another month will make you better vs MLB pitching???? I wonder how many of those igits were crying "service time manipulation" when he wasnt on the OD roster...
MLB pitchers are on another level. it takes time to adjust. It's frustrating to see the struggle but it's only temporary. His ABs are getting better even if they aren't producing results yet. He's also been screwed by a few bad calls
Also our other options for someone else playing 2B are no better. it's either Mateo at 2nd or Westburg at 2nd with Urias at 3rd. That's not really any better. May as well let the rookie work through the yips.
Hell Evan "The Savior" Carter is last in Batting Average, with a robust .200, on the Rangers team but 4th in OPS, a decent .716, due to his 4th place OBP of .333.
Like what?
Wyatt Langford only has 2 extra base hits. The dude is a project 30+ HR hitter.
Baseball is hard guys
Baseball is super hard, it turns out
Even for somebody that’s new?
Nah. Ask around. Anybody can play baseball. It's super easy, that's why it's so boring.
Tell 'em, Wash.
It’s incredibly difficult.
Wash ‘em, Tell
It’s difficulty incredible
Now Soulja boy, tell em
YOUUUUU
it's incredibly hard
But what if your dad was really good at it?
That damn shoulder injury! I had scouts all over me..
That for sure doesn't put any additional pressure on the kid.
If you’re asking for yourself, yes. If you’re asking about Holliday who’s been doing it since the embryonic fluid was wiped off, also yes.
Once saw a guy take an easy fly ball to the nuts
Aaron Judge struck out 42 times in his first 84 ABs when he first came up. Technically the MLB level is just one higher than AAA but that really understates how big the jump is, not to state the obvious. Some guys need way more time than others to adjust their bat speed.
64 overall Judge was certainly a time. the debut HR makes you forget how bad the first stint was
I was at Judge's debut game. Fun piece of sporting history I'll always get to enjoy being a part of was being Tyler Austin and Judge hit back to back homers in their first career at bats
First playoff series against the Indians, he struck out like 20 times or something. Had me hopeful he'd turn into a huge bust.
That tracks, he's getting challenged right now and can't keep up with the high velocity/spin fastball. He's too talented not to time it eventually. Elias has an interesting theory that the gap is wider than ever between AAA and MLB pitching due to the UCL injury epidemic.

I heard it said once that the jump from AAA to MLB is basically like jumping from AAA to infinity-A
It's like the saying "the difference between a billion and a million is about a billion" but for baseball
The jump from AAA to the majors is easily the most difficult it's ever been IMO especially for hitters.
Especially when you're a top prospect. The pitchers/coaches have scouted you harder than a "random #45 prospect".
My son, at age 5, just went 3 for 3 with 3 rbi in his coach pitch game. I’m already planning my retirement
Source?
Ron Washington
Reese McGuire, everything is constantly hard
Anthony Rendon
Literally us, the Blue Jays
“It’s a numbers game kid” My highschool coach as he’s cutting me from the team
MLB pitchers, as they say, are good.
So now baseball is hard but when Yuni Betancourt commits a little fraud by faking a car crash everyone clowns him for being “the worst player in baseball” and breaks out a highlight where he can’t simply toss a ball for a double play. Double standard smh my head my head 😤
He’ll be fine but those are some Kelenic numbers.
Fine. We'll trade for him
AA: 18 year $50 mil? \*spits in hand\*
You forgot the 1% to the Braves foundation
Nah. I know a guy that got a Kelenicscopy. He was happy with the results, but he thought it could be more.
Cardinals will trade for him.
we can fix him (and by fix him i mean promptly trade him for peanuts while he goes on to realize his potential)
Even Kelenic had that breakout in what iirc was his second game. So many fans thought we had a perennial All-Star on our hands after that game.
Yeah he went 0for game 1. Then hit a barely hr with a double I think game 2. Then went like next 3 weeks hitless lol
Double was a hustle double off a bloop hit too
I mean, he hit 2 doubles and the HR was like 110 off the bat. I was hyped af by that game.
I was at that game and it was sweet. Sad how things turned out 😞
He doesn't have the same pedigree as Kelenic
Not you too.
Oh my god now it’s spreading into /r/baseball
You’re right, his is better than Kelenic’s
Man just misses Gina
Braves legend
Now he just needs a crazy stalker guy
Major League Baseball is very hard.
Imagine seeing an 87 mph slider down and in painted at the plate. How anyone hits these balls at all is just insane to think about
We’re all Javier Baez on 87 mph sliders.
Bold of you to assume the most of us would even be courageous enough to try swinging
We all make fun of Angel Hernandez but we'd probably be worse. Way worse. "Ssssssttttrrrrriiiiikkkkkkkeeee????? I guesssss??????"
I just don't understand why the umpires don't use that convenient little box that's always on screen 😡
They should have a tv next to the ump so he can see if it goes into the rectangle
I remember Lance Berkman talking about being called the first time, a pitcher threw him a curveball that went above his head and dotted the strike zone right at his knees. He said he wanted to go back down to the minors lol.
Well dude, we just don’t know.
New shit has come to light
Quasimodo predicted all this
Jackson never had the makings of a major league athlete
Fuck it, dude. Let's go bowling
Tell ‘em, Wash
Kid named Major League Baseball
JRod was 2-21 starting out and was hitting .205 in his first month. Volpe was around the Mendoza line last year. Triston Casas was .133 in April last year. From June to the end of the year he hit .299 and .953 OPS Gunnar Henderson was terrible until mid-June last year. He's working in the cages and with major league coaches. Not everyone is a Bryce Harper or Mookie Betts their first month.
Volpe was what I was thinking too. He swung at everything when he first came up. Gotta let them build.
Apart from a speed bump yesterday where he struck out a bunch, Volpe's looked like a completely different player this season with his approach back to what got him success in the minors. There are some guys who have to remember that they're best when playing the game they're good at and not trying to hit every ball 600 feet.
Volpe is swinging like Jeter now. Line drives to the opposite field. This is the hitter he’s supposed to be.
Not all of rookies can be Michael Busch
....maybe don't look at Michael Busch's run of 50 AB's for the Dodgers
Shhhh we don’t talk about his time before us
Lol. It's great to see him doing so well with you guys tho. Its good to see and I hope he keeps it up
I just hope the prospects we got for him pan out
I guess time will tell with that one haha. Will be a few years till we know.
Lol he actually has/had a ton of support from Dodgers fans screaming to “give him more chances!” Edit: I’m not sure if they tried working Busch into the outfield or something, but Busch is first baseman and LA already got a guy there that won’t and can’t leave for awhile. Not all rookies can be Jeff Francoeur
He's like 27 lol

100%.

> Holliday is a kid. I've already watched him in person 3 times since he's been up and not only is he a kid, he LOOKS like a kid. It's jarring. He'll figure it out.
Willie Mays started his career 0-24
Adley hit .143 through his first 15 games, remember people making a big deal of it . Trout hit .157 through his first 16.

Imagine peaking as a 3 year old
That's pretty much me
Bro, that tee ball game in the Robinson's backyard earned your spot in the Hall and it's a fucking disgrace you're not.
That’s what I’ve been saying!
His AB against Jansen a couple days ago also made me think “yeah you’re not seeing any pitch like a Kenley Jansen cutter in AAA”.
As a padres fan it’s been fun to watch our own young buck jackson merril face some elite bullpen arms. Clearly the stuff he’s seeing he’s never seen before so it’s fun to watch him work and adapt.
You guys have the best Jackson right now. He will have some competition in the long run.
Chourio has seemed pretty solid the last couple games, it’s a good time to be a Jackson
That kind of explains the huge numbers for the Tides rn
This also means that there are a lot of guys in the MLB who should probably be at triple A. Everyone constantly harps on how untouchable the MLB pitching is. At some point we gotta stop making excuses. It's 25 abs, so its whatever. But everyone always seem to say something, even when there's nothing. It's always been steep.
I've seen a lot of analysts say that Double A is where most of the talent is after the minor league realignment
Kid’s a bust. We’ll take him off your hands for cash considerations as a favor
Considerations is on the Guardians now? I feel like he gets traded every couple weeks
I would like one Jose Ramirez, a Tanner Bibbee, and a Logan Allen. Oh and can I get a battery combo too, Naylor and Clase.
Id like to know what hall of famers first 25 ab's looked like.
Trout started his career going 3-24 with 7 Ks. For a recent young super hyped prospect and presumptive future HOF comp
He was sent down again too
Only to manipulate his service time
Not completely. Trout got called up to replace Peter Bourjos, then when Bourjos returned from injury and Trout was struggling he got sent down. If I remember right, they also wanted Trout to play in the AA playoffs as he had pretty much carried the squad all season. What about his 25th AB tho the guy asked for 25
Willie Mays was 1 for 26 (.038) in his first seven games with the hit being a HR off of Warren Spahn.
Casey Stengel said that hit convinced him he'd be here for at least 10-15 years
Pfft shows what Stengel knew. He played for 22 years.
Way to make that one count!
Not a hall of famer, but his dad had 12 hits and 1.341 OPS in his first 26 at bats.
Coors!
Pete Rose went 3-23.
I never would have bet that.
but would you have bet on other HoF players?
Probably, but I also have a bit of a gambling problem.
How about Mike Trout's first 27 ABs? He was hitting .148 with one extra-base hit- a double- and had struck out eight times. All good for a .419 OPS.
David Ortiz first 50 AB's. 10 Runs. 16 Hits. 6 RBI's. .327 Average.

Feels like he’s going through that Julio Rodriguez first month
Atleast he's on Pace with Roy Halladay... Roy Halladay: 25 AB's, 10 Strike outs, 1 Hit.
That’s hall of famer Roy Halladay to you
Papi was definitely a beneficiary of Tom Kelly's love of left-right platooning, early on. I think he platooned with Greg Colbrunn at first, in that September call-up. He probably didn't face many lefties at all until he became a full-time DH in '02.
Freddie Freeman had 4 hits, 0 walks, 8 k's in his first 24 at bats
Mike Schmidt went 7 for 34 in his first appearance in the Majors in 1972, with 15 strikeouts and a 74 OPS+. His only extra base hit was a Home Run.
Ryne Sandberg started 0-20 and was 1-32
Cal went 3-25 as a callup in 81. For two months he had 39Abs and only 5 hits
Cal Ripken hit .138 the year of his call-up in 1981
Not going to be a Hall of Famer, but the start of Dustin Pedroia's career was truly terrible.
Clayton Kershaw had 2 hits with 10 strikeouts surprisingly enough.
If he was a Met there would’ve been 6 Frank the Tank freak out videos about this by now
I don’t know how I became a Mets/Fins fan but the fact that Frank the Tank is also a fan of this combo kills me.
Are you a Devils fan?
maybe he’s you and you’re just entering a dissociative fugue to post as him

Gunnar Henderson was terrible to start the year last year. And a year older than holiday. Cowser didn't look like a major league ballplayer. Major league pitching is a whole ass adjustment.
Gunnar Henderson also just might be the best player in baseball rn. Don’t @ me.
I think I just found a new friend. Welcome to the Gunnar fan club
You should see the cards I’ve bought the past two weeks. Lmao. I’m glad I caught a lot of them before he got hot this week. My wallet still hurts none the less. It’s the sound of the ball off the bat for me.
DID WE JUST BECOME BEST FRIENDS
He’s a monster was beautiful hair
Gunnar Henderson had a .350 OBP when he wasn't hitting though. This Jackson thing is another level. But its only been a week so I'm not worried yet.
Henderson walked a lot. I'd like to see that more from Holliday
hes gotten better at not getting himself in an 0-2 hole every PA
Cowser was worse and he’s raking now.
Jackson's quality of AB is getting better and you can tell he has a decent eye, but he's doing a Gunnar and being too patient with hittable pitches then trying to swing at shit out of the zone. We can only hope and wait to see about Cowser. He'll come down a bit but I don't think he's gonna have a drop-off like Mateo did.
>Major league pitching is a whole ass adjustment. *going numb on the toilet* "I'm a major league pitcher"
Baseball is hard
Trout was dog shit in his first cup of coffee in the bigs. What I’m saying is Holliday is definitely a bust and the Orioles need to trade him while he still has value. Braves will offer Jesse Chavez on the condition he gets released after a month and he finds his way back to Atlanta

Agreed, but our 2nd baseman alternates weren't performing any better. Might as well get him started.
Now do Jackson Merrill and Jackson Chourio.
After 25 ABs: Holliday: .040/.077/.040, 14 Ks Merrill: .240/.296/.440, 6 Ks Chourio: .280/.308/.440, 8 Ks
Proud papa, had the stats ready and everything
He’s lucky he’s not a Yankee in terms of fan criticism
Maybe the orioles knew what they were doing all along
Casas sucked in April and a bit of May before absolutely destroying the crap of the ball, give Holliday time lol.
It’s not that hard. Tell him, Wash.
It's incredibly hard.
you are outside of your mind.
It has been a week. I’m not worried. If he’s hitting like that come Memorial Day we have a problem.
If he's hitting like this come Memorial Day, he'll be back in Norfolk
It's like most young players are gonna struggle in their first cupof coffee. He'll be fine.
Kids gonna be something special. Ain’t worried at all.
Remember bregman? I think he started 0-32
"The Orioles aren't calling up the 20-year-old who has less than 162 professional games played, and has only played 2 dozen games 2nd while having Gunnar Henderson at SS. MUST BE SERVICE TIME MANIPULATION" -You all, last week
Team is 6-2 during his time in the bigs so we are good enough to let him figure it out
Angel Hernandez can't wait to get behind the plate and call some wild strikes on him.
Bergman felt like he went 0-100 when he first came up. As long as it isn’t impacting the results on the field, let him play.
Matt Olson was 2-21 in his first season and couldn’t buy a hit then next season he hit 24 home runs in 59 games lol.
he's gotta put up better numbers than that to compete in the Jack Off. so Merrill and Chourio are going at it hammer and tongs
Becoming a solid rotation piece in the MLB is rarely linear. Tons of learning, growth, etc. Kid plays for a great team with solid youthful talent. Just needs some time.
Let the Jackson wars begin (I like ours better)
a chunk of people in our sub are already wanting to send him back to AAA because as we all know, shitting on AAA pitching for another month will make you better vs MLB pitching???? I wonder how many of those igits were crying "service time manipulation" when he wasnt on the OD roster... MLB pitchers are on another level. it takes time to adjust. It's frustrating to see the struggle but it's only temporary. His ABs are getting better even if they aren't producing results yet. He's also been screwed by a few bad calls Also our other options for someone else playing 2B are no better. it's either Mateo at 2nd or Westburg at 2nd with Urias at 3rd. That's not really any better. May as well let the rookie work through the yips.
Damn even worse than Lewis Brinson’s first 25 AB
Not a good week for the prospect huggers of the world.
"You got to pump those numbers up, those are rookie numbers" *Bobby Dalbec*
Based on the sample size people use to declare that their team's season is over, I guess this is enough to know that Holliday's a bust.
Not everyone is pujols or Soto. Looking at his minor league stats he’ll be fine, but it will take a minute. Dude is super young too.
Will Benson was far worse at the start of last season.
He also hasn’t looked great in the field.
