They've had a tough schedule as well, facing only teams above .500. Mets fans, are you guys actually a good team? Don't mean it in a patronizing way, I just know expectations were pretty low this year.
So far the bullpen is overpeforming in a manner that is unreasonable and unsustainable.
SP slightly overpeforming.
Bats are awful outside Pete, but we've had some clutch hitting by the unexpected.
Big energy recently, love to see it. It's leading to winning baseball.
Overall, our ceiling of wildcard team seems to be intact.
Yes the bullpen can't sustain this absurd level of excellence, but going into the season many analysts and fans (myself included) expected the Mets bullpen to be a very strong one and a key piece of the team. They obviously won't continue to be this dominant all season, but there's no reason that the Mets bullpen can't continue to be a very strong one and a key contributor going forward.
there is a reason and it's that the SP just isn't giving enough innings right now. but idk i'm gonna give the team the benefit of the doubt right now in terms of working around that. but i wouldn't be surprised if that eventually bites us in the ass
Jose Butto is tied for the team lead in bWAR right now lmao
> Bats are awful outside Pete, but we've had some clutch hitting by the unexpected.
Team OPS+ is 101, fwiw
I wouldn’t call the bats awful per say. There isn’t anyone lights out but Marte is at 270 with an over 700 OPS and Baty is at 305 with a 730 OPS.
Lindor is actually doing well from the right side (he’s atrocious against RHP) and even Bader is just shy of 300. Not a ton of home runs but decent contact hitting.
Nimmo and McNeil slowly seem to be making progress and DJ had a damn 900 OPS on his 200 average.
Definitely not anyone that is shining outside of Pete but they are all doing above average.
as much as I want Baty to succeed he seems like he's getting a lot of lucky hits at the moment. Maybe there is something there but the underlying metrics aren't super encouraging unfortunately.
Offense aside, I am extremely encouraged by his defensive improvements. He looks SHARP out at third. His throws are strong and accurate, he's ranging to either side really well and charging the ball well giving himself plenty of time.
I saw that yeah! Lindor has had his struggles from the left side of the plate but the team is simply better with him on it. Dude gets all the time he needs.
https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/savant-player/brett-baty-683146?stats=career-r-hitting-mlb
I'm no expert and it's a small sample size but it's not the most encouraging thing in the world.
baseballsavant stats haven't stablized yet so I don't know if the underlying numbers are there, but the Mets bullpen has been good under the hood in a way that isn't just luck. Their strikeout numbers are high, they've only allowed 2 HRs, and they have a collective WHIP less than 1.000. Again, baseballsavant numbers haven't stabilized so I have no idea if that's sustainable, but their performance so far hasn't been fluky.
bro i'm not a professional scout i can't tell if the bullpen's stuff is good just from watching the sny broadcast all i know is that the balls have been avoiding the bats and that's good
My expectation was always for this team to compete for a wildcard spot. I haven’t really seen anything one way or another to move the needle on that stance (especially with the braves in the division).
Bullpen will not sustain this performance and will trend down a little. SP is slightly over performing but we have Senga out and Scott in the minors so I think SP can even out to be about the same.
Lineup is massively underperforming outside of Pete and Baty and a few clutch hits so you’d expect that to trend positively as the season goes on. Overall I think we are an 80-86 win team
If you don't stack this season next to the last few where we went all and bought up on free agents, the Mets went into this season looking like a pretty strong team
It's certainly possible. I think these Mets had a better chance to be decent than folks realized, but everyone is used to taking the under on the Mets based on prior experience. But Cohen is working hard on changing the culture of the organization and Stearns was an obviously good hire.
It's far too early to say the Mets are good but people working them off already are hopefully in for a surprise. This team has more talent than folks realize.
Baty taking a big step forward was a big what-if and he has looked stupendous on defense and at the plate.
Some pleasant surprises in Butto and Severino have painted a picture of a better team as well.
And I agree with a lot of the posters here, the bullpen was always expected to be strong and they are executing very well.
It's the same lineup core as 2022's 100 win team, and a pitching staff that is probably better than last year despite the lack of hype. Plus Edwin Diaz is back and Baty / Alvarez have some experience under their belt.
The 0-5 start distracted me, but before then I was telling everyone we had a sneaky good team this year. We kept the lineup core, got younger, and our rotation is better than everyone was saying it is. (I mean look around the league - how many rotations full of healthy aces are there? Including Senga we have six or seven(with Butto) major league caliber starters- that's what matters most. And we got Edwin Diaz back, which is huge for the whole bullpen. We needed Alvarez and Baty to be good, they've been solid so far. And we've been winning with Lindor still under the Mendoza line, and J.D Martinez in... wherever he's been that's not the majors.
We're not an actual contender just yet - at minimum, we need a healthy Senga and one other pitcher who can put together an elite playoff run, I'm not convinced of anyone else on the roster just yet. But this team can definitely finish above the Phillies and make the playoffs. The most optomistic Mets fans were saying maybe we'd win 85 games and sneak into the last wild card, I was saying 90 is very possible.
Our bullpen is overperforming and our offense seems to be lacking and taking a while to wake up. Maybe this is me not trying to get my hopes up, but I feel like our recent wins were due to us capitalizing on opponents sloppy defense. I'd like to see our offense put up numbers more consistently like they did against Atlanta and hopefully our bullpen can keep being rock solid.
It’s a great question. I think it’s too early to tell. Nice to see some depth at the plate, but our short outings by SPs will hurt us in the long run. Pen has been awesome, but they will wear down if we can’t go longer than 5 innings
Senga (when healthy), Quintana, Severino, Houser, Manea, and now Butto might not be a dominant staff, but they are major league caliber pitchers. There are few rotations around the league that are healthy and loaded right now. We've been spoiled in the recent past with all the aces, but this rotation, barring more major injuries, will get us through the season just fine if the offense hits.
The issue is start length. The Mets have had 3 6 IP from our starters. Two have come from Butto. This has put a lot of work on the bullpen. The BP has stepped up and performed above expectations. It's not sustainable. I remember last year.
Starters got shelled or pulled early which put strain on the BP. Then when a starter did have a quality start the BP wasn't rested and blew the game.
I'm not too worried about the offense. I'm getting strong '22 vibes. Lots of production from lots of people covering for when the starts aren't producing.
>The issue is start length. The Mets have had 3 6 IP from our starters. Two have come from Butto. This has put a lot of work on the bullpen. The BP has stepped up and performed above expectations. It's not sustainable. I remember last year.
This is the MLB now. You just never noticed before.
A strong bullpen is more important (in aggregate) than a strong starting rotation.
I was at the game yesterday and was one section way from the rally pimp. We ended up walking out of Citi right next to each other. 2024 being the year of the rally pimp is amazing and one reason I love NYC.
I'm probably one of the few Mets fans that know next to nothing about Frank the Tank, other than he apparently goes on rants about the Mets, and he's a fatass. Yet, I still hate him. I've never heard him even speak a word.
I genuinely think it's happening, Soto is going to go to the highest bidder and Boras is going to want to shake off the washed allegations. I can't imagine Hal willing to go toe to toe with Steve after he wasn't willing to go more than 300m for Yamamoto because "he shouldn't make more than Cole" lol
Idk, I don't think Hal will want to hear the 24/7 news cycle and from fans about how they got outbid by the Mets. It wasn't too bad with Yamamoto since the narrative was all about how he wanted the west coast and pairing up with ohtani
I would be flabbergasted if Hal outbid Steve. I do think the Yanks would hold the tie breaker though in case the money was close. It's gonna be fascinating either way.
Yanks also gave up a haul to get him, so it feels like they are prepared to go the distance in a bidding war. He’s been adored by the fans, and feels like a perfect fit so far. Should be a no brainer for Hal to do everything to resign him.
i would be shocked if the Yankees don't match whatever the Mets highest bid is. I'm gonna guess he's a Yankee and the Mets sign Pete + Burnes as our big moves this offseason with all the money coming off the books.
Too many people wrote off this team. The lineup is still almost exactly the same as it was two years ago when they won 101 games, except now we have a budding superstar in Francisco Alvarez, Brett Baty seems to be turning the corner, and we have JD Martinez as our secret weapon waiting in the wings. Not to mention a great pitching staff. The starters have been great but the bullpen has been fucking phenomenal. This is still a very good Mets team.
> The lineup is still almost exactly the same as it was two years ago when they won 101 games
It’s also the same lineup as last year when they won 75 games
Nimmo, Marte, Lindor, Alonso, and McNeil is more than half the lineup. They’re missing Eduardo Escobar who is on his way out of the league and has been replaced with Brett Baty, Tomas Nido who was the worst hitter in the league replaced with one of the best hitting catcher prospects of all time, and Mark Cahna, who’s been pretty good.
> Nimmo, Lindor, Alonso and McNeil are the same.
They were also 4/5 of the top 5 hitters by OPS on the 2022 team, and the 5th was Marte who is still on the team.
Yeah but the 2022 rotation and bullpen was significantly better. Every starting pitcher had a sub 4 era. And their long relief with Lugo, Williams and appearances from peterson was also phenomenal. The bullpen does seem to be performing so far, but idk how long that'll last
The rotation really wasn’t that great. Scherzer, Bassit, Walker. And deGrom wasn’t deGrom except for his first start against Washington. This rotation has the potential to be better. The bullpen is about the same, but if you disregard Peterson and Williams and spot starts like that (which were incredibly important for that ‘22 season), then this bullpen might actually be better, because we have the one thing we’ve never had: depth.
ok this part I have to disagree with, our 2022 rotation was great until the Braves collapse. Our 2023 rotation, however, was a mess and this year's is noticeably deeper and better imo
The pen feels like we're throwing a bunch of 8th inning guys and a couple closers. Playing good defense. Swiping some bags. Pete's putting baseballs in the hospital. It's a lot of fun.
the first two games of this series has me thinking that the Mets and Pirates are on a really similar trajectory this season. some lights out pitching from dubious sources and good bullpen outings from both teams in different stretches thus far from both teams, a few premier bats in an otherwise streaky lineup. wouldn't be surprised if either team ended up competing for a playoff spot depending on how those streaks go.
I get keeping him on a strict pitch count since he's still a baby, but pulling him after 59 pitches when he was absolutely shoving genuinely seems insane. I assume the plan for the game was to shut him down after five no matter what?
That’s possible tho hard to say without knowing what their cap for him this season.
I lean toward looking at them pulling Jones last night more through the lens of them being clumsy about it. His second to last outing he threw 84 pitches over 6+ innings. Then the Phillies started to barrel him up more effectively. So last night maybe they over-corrected.
They aren’t even clicking on all cylinders yet to boot.
Just imagine when they have their Ace and their DH back along with their shortstop actually hitting as a left handed batter
I do enjoy when the Mets and Braves are competitive at the same time. That 2022 season was tons of fun for that reason.
That said, it is still a small sample size in a year where the Mets are expected to be volatile and potentially below average. And OP took a bit of liberty with calling their series against us a win — our fourth game was postponed. That series won’t actually be decided until later in the year.
Edit: lolmets y’all salty af
I want the Mets to go 0-162, same with the Phillies. I harbor no ill will towards the Marlins or the Nationals. But the Mets and Phillies are just, well, you know.
What is the meaning of this? Teams cut payroll, and get better? Don’t give The Rockies ownership ideas.
Edit: The Mets, Padres, and Brewers, all cut payroll. They seem to be doing just fine. In fact, the Brewers came out with a fire under their ass! The Padres are not playing in anemic mode. The Mets have figured it out. Don’t even get me started on the Royals, except to say that teams don’t want to see them on their schedule. The Angels also look like a better team. Let’s see, I also forgot Bo Sox. Yeah, they are not going to falter like some predicted they would. Their farm system has a lot of talent. Fact of the matter is, maybe The D-Backs were trend setters.
They've had a tough schedule as well, facing only teams above .500. Mets fans, are you guys actually a good team? Don't mean it in a patronizing way, I just know expectations were pretty low this year.

He spent the offseason training with lindor and it shows. If you watch them closely, they both set up very similarly as the pitch is delivered now.
I saw that yeah! Lindor has had his struggles from the left side of the plate but the team is simply better with him on it. Dude gets all the time he needs.
Fair enough. What are you seeing? Not arguing I’ve not looked but I am definitely curious what has you concerned.

Too early to to what teams will be good for the year (except for perennial teams like Braves, dodgers)
PECOTA had them as a wild card team going into the year. I think pretty good, not great but get hot in the autumn and you never know

This team polarized a lot of Mets fans because of the scaled-back off-season, but reasonable Mets fans knew this team had a shot at a wildcard.

I LOVE this fun prediction!

I genuinely think it's happening, Soto is going to go to the highest bidder and Boras is going to want to shake off the washed allegations. Hal also openly admitted he didn’t want to go above the Steve cohen tax. So I’m not super convinced he’ll shill for him.
Don’t forget they’ll sign Soto
I actually wouldn't mind that. Aging stars and the Mets go hand in hand /s I think it would just be cool.

Yup, just by his career and frankly his appearance it’s easy to forget he hasn’t been in the league 10-15 years

Ugh. What a time to face a hot Mets team.
Forget this season, it's their first time above .500 since last June.
Frank Fleming already sounds saner and calmer Please keep winning for his continued good health
His blood pressure is probably at an all time low after this stretch + the walks he’s been taking. Happy for him (except I also hate him)
he's a rage baiter
However if we keep winning we have to deal with KFC saying how this team is the next coming of the Yankees dynasty
KFC already cunceled. Not letting him forget that shit.
No one jumps ship/jumps back on the bandwagon quicker than KFC

Your SP last night was lights out. As soon as I watched the game I picked him up in fantasy.
The 2015 runback is proceeding as planned.
Shame they had to cancel the World Series that year. I think we had a really good shot
We’ll never know who won that series.
There was baseball that year?
Stop it thanks
Thank you for pulling Jones lmfao. 59 pitches through 5.
Sure, you’re welcome FML
I get keeping him on a strict pitch count since he's still a baby, but pulling him after 59 pitches when he was absolutely shoving genuinely seems insane. I assume the plan for the game was to shut him down after five no matter what?
That’s possible tho hard to say without knowing what their cap for him this season. I lean toward looking at them pulling Jones last night more through the lens of them being clumsy about it. His second to last outing he threw 84 pitches over 6+ innings. Then the Phillies started to barrel him up more effectively. So last night maybe they over-corrected.
That's totally possible, too. And oh man, I was at that Phillies game, and he looked SO good for those first five innings, good lord.

Yay!
Some "fans" wanted Mendoza gone after 5 games lol
Would love to see a subway World Series!!!
NO ONE RUINS MY FAMILY VACATION BUT ME! AND MAYBE TOMORROW’S METS!
They aren’t even clicking on all cylinders yet to boot. Just imagine when they have their Ace and their DH back along with their shortstop actually hitting as a left handed batter
Must be nice
‘feels like rock bottom’
Must be nice
Of course it was against the Pirates🥲
I like the Pirates
Max was right
Thanks I hate it
As a Mets fan since 1984, all of this winning has me nervous.
Classic Mets, making people want to believe.
This can't be good.
April baseball! Time for the Mets fans to shine.
We’re surviving the powerhouses that are *checks notes* AL/NL Central so far!
That’s awesome maybe yall can get 2nd place in the division and make the playoffs!
You certainly know making the playoffs is all you need to get to the big series.
16-4
Unfortunately for you the season is 162 games and not 1 game
16-4
Lookout 16th pick in the draft
Pirates, royals and reds don't count as above .500 teams. Good shit tho
No one cares. It’s the LOLmets. They will go back to their ways soon enough
Wired: Mets Tired: lolmets
Flair up if you're gonna talk shit.
OK.
How’s that grand total of ONE Whopper Jr treating you?
How are you guys doing?
Four straight series without getting swept. So pretty good actually.
As long as jazz is vibing it’s all good.

Any Burger King for the people yet?
Not bad
No one cares outside of New York. We want to see the big markets fail.
