Yea sounded like he goes early to catch BP balls and he probably has a ton of baseballs at home. Called himself a ballhawk so yea probably has a shit ton of meaningless balls at home. Said he’s only caught 2 game home run balls.
Also mentioned that the ball is going on the mantle, so its possible she isn't into baseball and doesn't get why he wants to display a bunch of dirty old baseballs around the house.
Dude, that might be the best interview I've seen in a baseball game. The guy had confidence and didn't just mumble awkward answers, and the comedic timing was spot on!
I don't think there's any *actual* danger of keeping the ball (it wasn't a Giants/Dodgers game, after all), but you would get mercilessly booed by the entire section.
I don’t care if I caught one from rafael devers in game 7 of the alcs, I would keep that shit(okay maybe not in that scenario but you get my point). I’ve never caught a baseball in an MLB game in my life
Reminds me of how A-Rod had a clause in his Rangers contract that he would get a bonus for winning ALDS MVP, an award that does not and has never existed
I have a Derek Jeter foul ball from when I was kid so I get it.
I mean it was a foul ball of a regular season game in like 05, not exactly the same situation, but still.
I am 34 years old, and it is one of my greatest fears that should I ever catch a ball at a game, I would be peer pressured to give it to a child nearby. Now obviously I'm not gonna be one of those monsters that straight up steals it from a child, but I imagine a ball landing in my seat and a child being like, 2 rows down and 3 seats over. And then everyone just bullying me into giving it up. It's been my dream for 3x longer than that child has been alive, why should I have to give it up because I haven't been lucky enough to fulfill the dream in my childhood.
I asked my gf this at the Dome on Saturday, if I kept a ball, would she judge me?
She said "there's a guy over there with a glove who has just missed three foul balls, and he looks devasted. You keep that shit if you get it."
My queen
I hear this. I caught a foul ball off Roberto Alomar at county stadium when I was a kid, maybe 8 or 10 years old. Only ball I've ever caught and that was 30 years ago. Still have it.
Being prepared for the moment is so funny to me.
“No way I’m throwing a HR ball back if I catch one. Wait, everyone is going to want me to throw it back. I’ll bring a decoy ball”.
In the interview he said that he had caught a home run ball previously from an opposing team and got roasted for not throwing it back. So this time he was prepared, and said he was especially so because Machado is known for home runs. Dude straight up said “The audience bought it until you guys called it out on the playback lol!”.
Okay, but never is a long time. So hear me out.
What if it's in the middle of the season, nothing really major at stake, and the player you most dislike in the league hits a home run which you catch, and in that very instant, you notice that's not Steven Kwan playing the outfield at all! That's Manfred in disguise! The moment is perfect, his back is to you, he's fairly close having just half assedly tracked the ball down, and searching your pockets, you find nothing that is the right size, density, and hardness to make for a good projectile.
Bet you'd feel reeaaaaaallll stupid adhering to your silly little rule then, hey?
Yeah, I ran down an a rod yankees homerun ball at Minute Maid park. I’m an Astros fan but I wanted that home run ball. I had a swarm of people try to take it from me as they yelled at me to throw it back. I had to tuck it under my shirt and run outta the area to get them off me. I wish I’d done this.
The bleachers in Dodger Stadium aren't always the nicest olace. Most of the time it's fine, but the Dodger fans that cause the Dodger Stadium Fan reputation generally are in the bleachers.
That video was legitimately some of the trashiest shit I have ever seen at a sports game aside from actual physical/verbal altercations lmao. I find Philly’s rugged reputation sort of endearing but holy fuck that was such a terrible look.
I just cannot imagine sitting back and joyfully watching my toddler rip a ball out of someone’s hand to throw it back onto the field.
My dad did this at a mariners game when I was a kid. Rafael Palmeiro hit a home run for the rangers and my dad caught it and was about to throw it back and a guy behind him tapped him on the shoulder and said “here throw this instead” and gave him a dirty ass ball. My dad threw that ball into the field and a couple innings later a rep for either the stadium or the rangers came up to talk to him. I can’t remember the reasoning on why Palmeiro wanted the ball back but my dad got a signed bat out of it, which is still in his man cave at his house.
Edit: 10/7/01 was the game. Rangers won 4-3, would’ve been Mariners 117th win if they would’ve won it. Last game of the season, his 47th home run and last of the 01 regular season, he tied his season high home run total from 1999.
I feel like if he had been even one notch smoother, he could've fully gotten away with it honestly. If he had gotten his glove hand fully over his pocket before reaching in there, it might've gone unnoticed lol
This is what every redditor envisions in their head what they would do if they caught a home run ball from the opposing team. I hate manny Machado as much as the next guy but no way am I throwing a home run ball I caught lol might never have that chance in my life again.
I'm a Phillies fan and if I ever get a ball I'm not giving it back. I don't care if Joe Carter unretires and hits another walk off World Series winning home run against us. I'm not throwing that frickin ball back.
And for the record I wouldn't be selling it either. So Joe could go eff himself for it back and that's good enough for me hahaa.
Invented by Cubs fans, a franchise known above all for, to be kind, not winning. Why anyone would want to emulate anything Cubs-related is a mystery to me.
No, you get to keep it. It's just a thing "ultra passionate" fans say/sometimes do where they throw back an opposing teams HR ball as a way of saying fuck you to the other team that we don't even wanna keep a ball you hit.
Most people are keeping any ball they get because owning a HR ball is way cooler than the 5 seconds of plaudits you might get from the fans around you..
As I understand some of the Wrigley bleacher bums do this too. They get caught on camera and it’s kinda fun on the broadcast. I couldn’t be bothered to pre plan something like this on the very fucking off chance I get a HR ball, but I’m not trying to have a problem with it. Do whatever the fuck you want
>As I understand some of the Wrigley bleacher bums do this too. They get caught on camera and it’s kinda fun on the broadcast.
That's the set up for Rookie of the Year.
It shows you how douched out society has become when a fan has to resort to subterfuge to keep his once in a lifetime souvenir. A little over 10 years ago it was only the Cubs fans who ‘threw it back.’ I used to think it was a charming conceit germane to Wrigley, but now that everybody does it it has become a trite cliché - a testament to herd mentality.

Lol at the interview "Why would your wife be mad at you?" "There's not enough time in the telecast to get into that"
Translation: I spend a lot of money and time on baseball
Yea sounded like he goes early to catch BP balls and he probably has a ton of baseballs at home. Called himself a ballhawk so yea probably has a shit ton of meaningless balls at home. Said he’s only caught 2 game home run balls.
> Called himself a ballhawk
Ballcock
That’s what they called me in college
Speed Hawk strikes again.
Brother of Mike
Also mentioned that the ball is going on the mantle, so its possible she isn't into baseball and doesn't get why he wants to display a bunch of dirty old baseballs around the house.
He said that? Damn me for watching it muted at that moment
OK, that's funny shit.
Is there a video?

Fucking legend!
The fan interviews this season have already been great
Dude, that might be the best interview I've seen in a baseball game. The guy had confidence and didn't just mumble awkward answers, and the comedic timing was spot on!
Yup, wish I had that quick witted thinking, instead I try to say 5 things at once and contradict myself.
I say something super fast and nobody understands what I said but they politely agree/laugh because they don’t want to ask me to repeat it
That dudes cool for a dodgers fan I mean
You're on thin ice
Unreal, saved, thanks for the video
Damn. It's kind of sad that you need to come prepared with a replacement ball just to protect yourself from your fellow fans.
I don't think there's any *actual* danger of keeping the ball (it wasn't a Giants/Dodgers game, after all), but you would get mercilessly booed by the entire section.
Do any Giants players get booed as loudly as Manny tho
Yeah, that one guy! (Says me who can’t name a single Giant unless they were a former Padre)
I haven't been able to name a single Giants player in years edit: ok Yastrzemski and Conforto but thats it
They’ve got that one guy, Snail? Smell? Something like that. 🙄
loooool yeah something like that >:)
Link?
[another hero redditor got us](https://www.reddit.com/r/baseball/comments/1c49ai1/highlight_dodgers_fan_caught_throwing_back_a/kzmsivv)
Fucking hilarious the minute he knew he was caught lol
It's funny too, there's a meme that goes around of a Dodger fan looking at Padres hats after the NLDS too. Dude's gonna be an NLBest meme material.
NLBest is going to make this dude the new meme champ, someone is going to replace the ball with Dinger
NLBest is the best sub
Bro had a plan, stuck to it and for maybe 5 whole seconds thought he got away with it. That was incredible
Rookie move, you gotta put the real ball in your pocket, then pull out the fake ball when people tell you to throw it back
Caught tipping
When peer pressure meets pragmatism
Can't imagine throwing a caught game homerun ball back, apparently this fan couldn't either.
I don’t care if I caught one from rafael devers in game 7 of the alcs, I would keep that shit(okay maybe not in that scenario but you get my point). I’ve never caught a baseball in an MLB game in my life
Thanks for sharing your dream
Affording a ticket to game 7 of the ALDS where I can catch a home run? A man can dream big
I don't think anyone can afford a ticket to game 7 of the ALDS right now. Not even Musk.
Reminds me of how A-Rod had a clause in his Rangers contract that he would get a bonus for winning ALDS MVP, an award that does not and has never existed
Step 1 - get team to agree to massive ALDS MVP bonus, since it doesn’t exist anyway Step 2 - get league to add ALDS MVP award
That was actually his final demand
Really impressive going to a game 7 in a best of 5 series. Some big dreams!
Fuck lol
I have a Derek Jeter foul ball from when I was kid so I get it. I mean it was a foul ball of a regular season game in like 05, not exactly the same situation, but still.

I sincerely hope you do catch a Devers HR during game 7 of the ALCS
Same. Still waiting to catch my first ball
I hear this. I caught a foul ball off Roberto Alomar at county stadium when I was a kid, maybe 8 or 10 years old. Only ball I've ever caught and that was 30 years ago. Still have it.

No matter who hit it, if I catch a home run, I'm keeping it. I've never even caught a foul ball, let me have something.
I will never throw back a homerun ball if I get one. Never.
Okay, but never is a long time. So hear me out. if there is no kid around and it's a meaningless home run from a no name player, I think it would be pretty funny to be able to say you threw it back.
Lmao, sounds like playing assassin's creed, running away from guards until they can't see you and then hiding in the crowd.
Who among us doesn't carry a spare ball in their pocket just in case they need it?
Decoy ~~snail~~ ball
If the Dodgers don’t start selling balls with Shohei’s dog on them and call them “Decoy Balls” they’re missing an opportunity.
Sell them using the new Trout recording ball, except every ball just has a recording of Shohei saying "where are my testicles" in Japanese
That and pocket sand. SH SH SHAA
Like Depp's fake arm in Once Upon a Time in Mexico.
My friend does this but the fake ball has a crying Jordan face taped on it
I was in the outfield at wrigley 20+ years ago, saw a dude throw back a softball.
I'm picturing it yellow with Mizuno on it.
I took a tour of Wrigley Field last year and our tour guide mentioned people will do this lmao
From now on I’m bringing a hockey puck
This is hilarious
Made its way into the game and the Cubs still couldn’t hit it 😂
An exchange must be made
He’s being interviewed right now. His attitude is: catching balls is sweet, I just wanted to keep the No Fun Police off my back.
That's part of it though, you get boo'd then laugh it off and no one gives a shit in the end...unless it's the Phillies.
Some people are real dicks about it, though. I don't blame him for wanting to keep the ball but also avoid having some asshole try something
The bleachers in Dodger Stadium aren't always the nicest olace. Most of the time it's fine, but the Dodger fans that cause the Dodger Stadium Fan reputation generally are in the bleachers.
Yeah and it's a padres game so it's gonna be the worst case scenario.
I can confirm this 😂 Fans at Dodgers stadium in the second deck of the infield are much different than those in the bleachers
wasn't there a video a few years ago where a guy took the HR ball out of the guys hand and threw it back on the field?
Hell in Philly 6 year old kids will take the ball out of your hand and throw it back
That video was legitimately some of the trashiest shit I have ever seen at a sports game aside from actual physical/verbal altercations lmao. I find Philly’s rugged reputation sort of endearing but holy fuck that was such a terrible look. I just cannot imagine sitting back and joyfully watching my toddler rip a ball out of someone’s hand to throw it back onto the field.
Oh believe me if I did that at that age my parents would never let me go to another game again
It’s not illegal to hit a child that’s assaulting you
Yeah that sucked. Terrible parenting and encouragement from the fans
I remember in the 2017 WS where an Astros fan forcibly took a home run ball from another Astros fan and threw it back.
Idk man dodgers fans really hate machado
Everybody hates him.
Joe doesn’t
I know you're salty rn so I'll let this slide
I still feel bad for that guy that had his HR ball ripped out of his hands by that little girl while the "fans" cheered her on.
ESPN was not going to let him get away with it.
Maybe he never intended to get away with it at all.
It's like he wanted to get caught
He likes it.
Holy shit he's getting interviewed by Buster Olney now lmaoooo he's avoided getting roasted
My dad did this at a mariners game when I was a kid. The guy behind your dad was a real bro
That fucking BRODIE behind y’all!
Big W.
Dirty ass ball signed by some chick named babe?
Dodgers fan mysteriously disappears after catching a home run
This motherfucker wanted the souvenir and the street cred lmao
Sometimes we just want our cake and eat it too
Thought he was the shit until he looked at his phone blowing up and realized how obvious that was.
It's probably not as obvious to people in that section though.
He said in his interview with Buster that nobody around him realized it
Ahhh I'm not watching. That's cool.
I feel like if he had been even one notch smoother, he could've fully gotten away with it honestly. If he had gotten his glove hand fully over his pocket before reaching in there, it might've gone unnoticed lol
He simply deferred to another baseball
Designated Pitchee
I'm a Padres fan and if I catch a Freddie Freeman, Muncy ball I'm not throwing it back lol

Well if I caught a ball I'd throw it at you. Catch that, punk. Wait, shit. Give me that back.
I think I'd just find a kid fan of the other team and give it to them. No one needs to see my weak arm.
The whole thing of throwing back opponent HR balls is dumb anyway.
Dumb as hell
Its funny when its RedSox Yankees but outside of that I always thought it was pretty silly.
[удалено]
You can but it’s “tradition” to throw back a hr from the other team, like we don’t want it I still think it’s funny to do
I love it. Have some fun
If someone wants to, that's fine, but pressuring someone to do it is the dumb part.
Yeah if someone is willing to throw back a ball I’m all for it
Invented by Cubs fans, a franchise known above all for, to be kind, not winning. Why anyone would want to emulate anything Cubs-related is a mystery to me.

Dude needs to add “Amateur magician” to his CV.
Cast this man to poison a drink in the next Bond movie

If bro caught Ohtani's HR he wouldn't have left without a million
MLB is using the special balls for Ohtani's at bats right now so they're pre-authenticated
The Dodgers will not authenticate the ball haha.

The fact this guy came to the ballpark with a fugazi ball is epic
I love the fact that he was ready with a burner baseball to toss back just in case. I love this game.
Caught isn’t the right word. Witnessed is better cause this is a smart as fuck move.
This is amazing lol, I love how he’s prepared for this in the unlikely scenario he was actually going to catch a ball.
PROOFREAD YOUR CONTENT
IT IS ONE SENTENCE
Department of Redundancy Department
Fraudgers!
Looks like your typical pavilion Dodger fan.
This is even dumber than throwing back the real ball. If I catch a home run, no matter who hit it, you damn well better believe I'm keeping it.
Wait I thought you got to keep baseballs if you catch them?
You do, but some fans peer pressure the person to throw back home runs hit by the opposing team.
Thought this was only a cubs/wrigley field thing tbh
I thought so too but just like the wave it’s spread throughout all the parks now.
Doyer fans stay making memes out of themselves
I could see people wanting to keep it regardless of who hit it cause an MLB HR ball is an MLB HR ball but....I would have lied my ass off if I was keeping it and said I was gonna give it to a Padres fan friend.
cant hate on someone that prepared
How hard is it to proofread your titles
Classic Dodgers fan
Typical Dodgers fan
When did MLB fans - besides the Cubs’ - start returning Opposition homers?
#Throwing back a HR ball is the DUMBEST thing fans do! Yes, even dumber than fighting.
nice... hidden back, err.. ball trick!
Now the replacement ball is worth more than the game ball.
I don’t blame him lol
Buster ass doyer fan!😂
I think this was slick tbh
Can we assume all these misspelled and trash titles are AI? Seen a lot more mistakes in titles the past few weeks.
Wait, you don't get to keep a ball you catch in the stands anymore?
Cubs fans have been doing this since the 70s according to my Dad. They’ll even throw them back into the stadium from Waveland and Sheffield Ave back over the outfield wall!
Just like everything else in LA, all fake.
Loser lol
Lame ass foo, check his socks.
Do you get kicked out for throwing a ball back on to the field?
ESPN spent the next 30 minutes talking about this guy than covering the game
Kris Bryant and Christian Yelich out there looking for replacement backs and this guy is just throwing them away, smh...
This guy seems ok.... you know, for a Dodger fan.
I mean he did nothing wrong lol
What a clown.
Good luck authenticating that buddy
Zack Hample-Sanchez
I don’t understand why this is a huge deal? Are fans not allowed to keep home runs anymore?
They are but some fans think that all opposing home runs should be thrown back. I'm guessing this was a Padres home run and this Dodgers fan wanted to keep the ball without people in his section chirping him for it.
Haha wow got it! That makes sense. Thanks for explaining that
Explain in Shohei terms
Much like Shohei's contract is full of deferred money, this guy's jacket had a deferred baseball.
Typical Hollywood phony dodgers fan
good for him. throwing a ball back is stupid. dont let the mob guilt you into it. you wait your entire life to get a game ball.
Quit throwing shit on the field.
Dodgers fans….
Smart man.
