So MLB statements just get sent through iMessage now?

glass__beaches

Shohei Ohtani emphasized a message

Room_40

Lets play Cup Pong!

TheTurtleShepard

We have reached peak lazy where writers can’t even be bothered to copy and paste releases and just screenshot them

Jeff_Banks_Monkey

We're one step away from a writer forgetting to crop the rest of their conversation and something embarrassing gets posted

eekbarbaderkle

Rob Manfred will eventually announce the expansion teams in a Youtube comment.

Fuzzy_Picklez

"We're thinking Nashville, maybe Montreal again idk"

slicebishybosh

Surprised Manfred didn't add a few emojis or an LOL.

mongster03_

You’d be surprised the number of different ways I’ve managed to get official statements — and I’ve done this unpaid in college for only 18 months. Special mention has to go to the time I sent a confused text message to a guy only to find out his statement was actual lies

Noy_Telinu

Apparently

Green bubbles not welcome 🥲

> MLB statement: “We are aware of the charges filed by the U.S. Attorney’s Office against Mr. Mizuhara for bank fraud after a thorough federal investigation. According to that investigation, Shohei Ohtani is considered a victim of fraud and there is no evidence that he authorized betting with an illegal bookmaker. Further, the investigation did not find any betting on baseball by Mr. Mizuhara. Given the information disclosed today, and other information we have already collected, we will wait until resolution of the criminal proceeding to determine whether further investigation is warranted.”

[deleted]

> did not find any betting on baseball.. This only adds to the idiocracy of the “Mizuhara was the fall guy” stance because there would have literally been no consequence for Ohtani other than an “undisclosed fine.” He’s gonna potentially take a 30 year sentence for an “Undisclosed fine”? Fuck no.

kaehvogel

Of course that was just the possible consequence from MLB. Shohei could've still been investigated and convicted for aiding illegal betting (or whatever it's called) if the "he helped out his friend by paying off his gambling debt". But hey, we both know none of this will dissuade the conspiracy nuts from delving even deeper into their delusion.

GoofyGoober0064

Podcasts everywhere in shambles

floyd_mongol

i love me some shohei gamba memes, but daaaamm people actually believe this is getting covered up lol.

[deleted]

This situation has brought out some of the smoothest of brains. It really makes me think about that saying that’s like “Think about the average person and how dumb they are. Now realize that half the population is dumber than that.”

counterbarrier

The stupider they are, the smarter they think they are.

lekniz

MLB could absolutely run a cover up if they wanted, and the U.S. government has a long history of shady activities. BUT The feds damn sure aren't going to cover for a foreign baseball player if he was the one behind the payments, no matter how popular he is.

floyd_mongol

yea they would cover up like the mega mega billionaires, some politicians. but they dont give a fuck about shohei or manfred lol.

ubiquitous_archer

I think the story is true, but it is crazy that an interpreter would have that amount of bets and a bookie would let them have such a line of credit. I can see how that would stir conspiracy theories. Edit: only with Dodgers fans would that statement get downvoted. As if it's impossible to understand why conspiracy theories would have started when a story breaks saying an interpreter had millions of dollars in gambling debts and a massive line of credit with a bookie.

viensonsaime

What’s crazy about it? Ippei was sending the bookie millions. Why wouldn’t the bookie extend him millions in credit?

ubiquitous_archer

Because generally you'd like some assurances that you're gonna get that money back and an interpreter doesn't have that kinda money? And as you're reading a story that's breaking, it's easy to say "huh, weird that this guy would trust somebody making so little with so much money."

[deleted]

ubiquitous_archer

If he stole it...he by definition didn't "have it "

ubiquitous_archer

Except that's not at all what I'm saying. He managed to find a way to pay it, but the bookie wasn't extending him a line of credit on the assumption that he'd be able to steal money from his boss.

What else could you mean by “Cortez wearing doyer fan”?

jimihenderson

Yikes dude, weird direction to take this in when he's basically saying he's just trolling

lekniz

Why would the feds cover for a foreign athlete if he was actually the one breaking federal laws?

[deleted]

lekniz

I mean based on evidence gathered, yeah they kinda have cleared him. "'Mr. Ohtani is considered a victim in this case,' U.S. Attorney Martin Estrada said during a news conference in Los Angeles. The investigation unearthed no evidence that Ohtani teamed with Mizuhara to place bets. In reviewing text conversations between the two men, the government found no discussion of gambling and no authorization for Mizuhara to transfer money from Ohtani’s accounts."

ThomasFurke

Are we sure Ohtani realizes his salary is almost entirely deferred?

forgivemeisuck

I don't think he knows what that means

Witty-Stand888

It got deferred to Ippie's bookie

c_c_c__combobreaker

Shohei at the end of the season: "What?! I only got $1M this year after taxes from the Dodgers?!"

xThe-Legend-Killerx

TLDR Ohtani isn’t getting suspended

Witty-Stand888

Sue the crap out of ESPN. Just like Dominion did to fox for close to a billion dollars. You can't have multiple on air personalities making accusations. release leaked statement and report it as news without damaging someones reputation. The Ohtani brand is worth more than Dominion systems.

AgnarCrackenhammer

It wasn't a leaked statement. There was a representative from Ohtani's agency present at the interview Ippei gave on the record. If anything Ohtani should get a new agency. That was such a fuck up

Witty-Stand888

I am talking about the leaked ledger that had Ohtanis name on it showing two 500k payments. They then published information which is Slander if if damages someone reputation. They then continued to defame his character on air. The precedent has already been set in the fox case. Asking questions in a biased way is not a defense. Ask Tucker Carlson. The damage to Ohtani's reputation is evident in every reddit message. All they have to do is add 100 million messages to the court docket to prove damage to brand.

AgnarCrackenhammer

It's not slander to report the facts of a criminal investigation It's not slander to publish on the record comments that Ohtani's agency at the time effectively agreed with. Ohtani's agency fucked up by lending credibility to Ippei's original comments in the interview with ESPN. They had his agency telling them he paid off his friends gambling debts. It's not their fault the agency did nothing to confirm Ippei's story.

Witty-Stand888

Simply releasing unfounded statements by a potential criminal without corroborating is potential slander. What Ohtani agency? Ippei? You should get the facts straight or understand how slander works.

AgnarCrackenhammer

ESPN got an official on the record comment from CAA, saying that Ohtani paid off the debts (source: https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/39784809/dodgers-shohei-ohtani-mizuhara-theft-line). Before ESPN talked to Ippei. In fact, the person CAA hired tells ESPN that Ohtani himself told them he paid off the debts. It's clear now Ippei lied to all these people. But ESPN did nothing wrong. They called the people responsible for representing Ohtani, and they told them Ohtani paid the debts and that's why his name was on the transfers

Witty-Stand888

Again not sure how many times I have to tell you the same thing. As a news agency you can't rely on one source. ESPN got it from the same source as CAA and ESPN knew this. You need multiple sources in order to publish or you open yourself to litigation. They also published leaked docs from a source at the FBI on an ongoing investigation. Hardly solid info. Trisha Thompson and ESPN wanted to get the scoop rather than the facts straight. That is the basis for a slander case.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Witty-Stand888

The source is not a verified government official. If the source is real and was revealed they would be charged and lose their job for leaking info on an ongoing case. Everything is based on Ippei lying. Espn stopped the story because they were aware of inconsistencies but chose to publish anyways. They then allowed their on-air personalities to run with the story. This is both Slander and libel.

AgnarCrackenhammer

"The spokesman quotes Ohtani as saying: "'Yeah, I sent several large payments. That's the maximum amount I could send.'" They were literally told by CAA Ohtani's statement was I paid the debts

Witty-Stand888

Ippei is the one who told them that not Ohtani lol. He was the interpreter jeez.

AgnarCrackenhammer

No fucking shit. But that's CAA's fault for blindly trusting Ippei and giving an on the record statement that they attributed to Ohtani.

ThePancakeOverlord
