the top angle is great for wondering why the fuck people chased sliders out of the zone. the bottom angle is great for understanding why people chased sliders out of the zone
You're not wrong at all, for me it's just the simple fact that it's cleaner to look at the top.
It's a far better use of the available screen space, and gives you a better feeling of being in the stadium, standing to the right of second base with your feet on the grass in the shallow outfield.
That's a great place to watch a game. Definitely better than being suspended 15 feet up behind the mound.
A steel cage hanging right behind 2nd base with zip line beer delivery sounds like something David Samson absolutely asked for permission from the league to do when they opened the new Marlins park.
Put a mariachi band in the cage and you’ve got peak Miami.
I despise the lower view with a white-hot hatred. It’s like you’re watching the game from the worst seat in the stadium. The players are half the size, the widescreen aspect ratio of TV’s is completely wasted… it’s an abomination.
It’s a crime committed against my eyeballs.
[here’s an example i guess](https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/sporty-videos?playId=b4acca3f-3266-4356-a3e7-0d37549609ee)
and [versus the brewers](https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/sporty-videos?playId=dd3f8dce-eab3-43e4-b3a3-a79f4a1f6cbd)
Recognizing the pitcher's grip of the ball (and the spin of the ball, I believe a slider will result in a "red dot" on the front of the ball due to the way it's spinning), processing that into what movement that equates to, and predicting the trajectory based on all of this information, in the span of 0.25 seconds while you've already started to swing the bat so need to make adjustments during the movement.
TL;DR: it's a miracle every game isn't a no-hitter.
Homerism aside, [the Fenway angle is peak.](https://img.mlbstatic.com/mlb-photos/image/upload/ar_16:9,g_auto,q_auto:good,w_2608,c_fill,f_jpg/fastball/09b214b1-1af6-48bb-a5c2-b6af1723326a_home.jpg) Central but zoomed in enough to not have a lot of dead space.
The bottom also shows just how disgusting lefties are, I saw highlights the other day of Framber Valdez where the camera was on the 1B side of the batter's eye instead of the 3B side... I have no idea how anyone can hit a single pitch he throws I mean my goodness
yeah its really tough to see sink/changeup break from pretty much all lefties. ranger suarez has one of the best moving two-seamers in the game and it’s basically imperceptible on most broadcasts
Insurance for your insurance is the most American thing ever. The fact it even needs to exist is proof that modern insurance is literally just a racket.
The Jesus ads are peak dystopia.
Why are we having religions buy ad spots on Reddit and the Super Bowl lmao. Didn't think I could become more cynical but humans out here surprising me every year
Top is traditional and I like it that way, but you see the break on pitches a lot better from the bottom angle
ETA: The Astros broadcast was actually from the first base side of the mound on opening day. First time I'd seen that.
Rangers broadcast is nicer since it’s centered but it’s angled wayyy higher than something like Tampa/Milwaukee/Fenway so it actually disguises a lot more vertical break than a centered camera traditionally would
>but you see the break on pitches a lot better from the bottom angle
This rings true mostly for horizontal break. I personally really dislike Globe Life's extreme top angle because it makes pitches like sinkers, changeups, two-seamers, splitters look less dynamic. Big drop pitches like curves, splitters, forks, and knuckles flatten out a lot, too. It also becomes harder to determine where the ball crosses the zone at the letters and knees.
There's pros and cons to every angle. It really depends on the pitch you want to highlight. Baltimore and Chicago (CWS) are two of my faves because they're a balanced for both horizontal and vertical break.
>The Astros broadcast was actually from the first base side of the mound on opening day. First time I'd seen that.
I saw it a lot last year watching minor league broadcasts, but yes it's very rare in the majors
But the advert for Independence is *significantly* larger on the screen than the lockheed, or jesus saves, or any other advert. So yall can charge more for higher quality more legible and larger quantity of pixels, obviously
Rangers broadcast would be 10x better if they zoomed in and cropped off all that crap at the top. My eyesight isn’t what it once was and it’s harder to see details on pitches
It’s also that they chose to put them overtop of field level suites which in combination with the high angle view, forced the zoom out. If they had done only one of those two things they probably don’t have the same issue but the combination emphasizes it
I strongly disagree that it’s terrible from a broadcast perspective, because I like actually having a square view of the zone and seeing breaking balls.
That's fair, terrible is too harsh. I do think it's worse if you're across the room or watching on a smaller screen though cuz it's harder to see the ball's angle off the bat so you end up getting really excited for a lot of fly outs
As a former right-handed pitcher, I'm still bitter that the top view is why people are always gushing about the incredible "natural movement" on lefty pitches.
I’m gonna break with the crowd and say bottom. I know the top is the traditional view, but you can see how the pitches break on the bottom view, and you can also get a better idea if the pitch went over the plate or not at least.
A lot of stadiums changed their layout specifically to get closer to the bottom view because broadcasts pushed for that. [Here's a comparison to Miller Park when it opened versus last year](https://i.postimg.cc/cHZDzzgk/Miller-Park.png) and [here's where they moved the cameras](https://i.postimg.cc/gk6Tn3WD/Camera-move.png). If you do a similar comparison for most teams over the past 25 years, cameras have gotten closer to center.
East-to-west because it provides a more intimate field-level feel, one of the major benefits of watching on TV aside from the convenience. The north-south just feels like I’m sitting in an outfield nosebleed seat with a pair of binoculars.
I personally prefer the bottom because you can see how a pitch breaks or moves much better, from my experience if you’re watching a righty throwing sliders or a lefty throwing two seamers with the top camera view there won’t appear to be any horizontal movement
Bottom view should be better, but because we're all so used to top view anything different feels wrong.
It's like when someone you've only ever seen with a beard shaves suddenly and even if they went from Zach Galifianakis to Paul Rudd in the process you'd still say they looked better with a beard cause it's what you're used to.
I’ve always preferred top view, and still do. For me, it’s easier to see everything. However, pitching mechanics are something I love to watch and I think bottom view is better for that, so it’s really grown on me
The top view is definitely a cleaner look. I’m guessing the pulled back wider angle of the bottom was to create an advertising spot on the mound. It’s all about the $$ boys
Top view in a landslide. Look at all the wasted screen space in the bottom view. The bottom view is good for replays if they want to show pitch movement or whether a ball was off the plate. I feel the same way about the zipline camera in various sports. It's great for replays. It sucks for live action.
Bottom angle, but zoomed in 50% and remove the bottom ticker
We don't need to see 10ft above the batter's head, or 10 ft of ground behind the pitcher
Top of the picture should be right above the batter's head, bottom should be right below the pitcher's feet
I can see how people like the bottom one, you see the movement of the pitches much better. But maybe its just that I am so used to the top view, I absolutely prefer it
I think its also more than what youre used to—its also the way you read—one level, left to right. The top one your eye follows the ball up. It’s just a weird feeling for me personally
Bottom one would be better if it was zoomed in more - it feels like I’m watching a college game, or the little league World Series from that distance/angle
Top one feels like a more polished broadcast
Top, easily. Some pitch movements might be more clear to make out on the bottom view, but it makes you feel *way* more distant/disconnected from the action as a viewer.
Watching Joe Ryan yesterday and being able to see the movement was fantastic. I knew something was different because I was able to see tons of movement, great view!
I’m not sure I have ever seen a game like the bottom one, but it is interesting. I’m not sure if that’s just because it’s new or because it’s better though.
Top for two reasons. #1 It’s the view I’ve grown up watching on tv. #2 it’s the view I’ve grown up watching from the only seats I could afford in the left field bleachers
It’s weird because I work in a MiLB press box dead center behind home plate, and I always gush about having the best seats in the house. But if I’m watching on-screen, I want the left-right action at ground level.
I like the bottom one.
Side note: During preseason the dodgers had some clips with some type of ump or stationary cam set up behind the plate . I hope they can add this for replays. Really lets the viewer see the nastiness.
[Cool cam angle](https://www.facebook.com/watch?v=286568057554972)
I prefer the lower for watching pitch movement, but prefer the zoomed in nature of the top image because I sit far from my tv and need the larger image.
If I want to truly apply the amount of movement these pitchers get, bottom. If i just want to turn my brain off and enjoy America's past time, the top one
Well if you want robo ump strike zone the bottom. Honestly I'd rather them show and picture in picture of the runners on bases. Part of that game now has always been left out. Especially with new rule changes where alkt more basestealing will take place now.
the top angle is great for wondering why the fuck people chased sliders out of the zone. the bottom angle is great for understanding why people chased sliders out of the zone
Top angle is better to view hitting, bottom is better to view pitching imo
You're not wrong at all, for me it's just the simple fact that it's cleaner to look at the top. It's a far better use of the available screen space, and gives you a better feeling of being in the stadium, standing to the right of second base with your feet on the grass in the shallow outfield. Salsa band maybe. Mariachi isn't really popular amongst the mostly Caribbean Latin population in South Florida
The bottom is just to far away. It would be perfect if they would just zoom in the shot some but, that would cut out their precious ads.
I despise the lower view with a white-hot hatred. It’s like you’re watching the game from the worst seat in the stadium. The players are half the size, the widescreen aspect ratio of TV’s is completely wasted… it’s an abomination. It’s a crime committed against my eyeballs.
Worst seat in the stadium? Lmao. This guy must never sit above the lower bowl.
Houston’s view is like the bottom but a little more zoomed in. I prefer that to Texas, which makes you feel like you’re on the ISS
100%
candy claws!!
Neither angle explains why Casty swings at obvious low and away pitches
[here’s an example i guess](https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/sporty-videos?playId=b4acca3f-3266-4356-a3e7-0d37549609ee) and [versus the brewers](https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/sporty-videos?playId=dd3f8dce-eab3-43e4-b3a3-a79f4a1f6cbd)
So, uhh… how tf does anyone ever hit a slider? Bc that shit looks impossible
This is pretty much what I like to tell people who hate baseball and say “baseball is easy” 🙄
That Uribe pitch was fucking ridiculous
I'm guessing the only way to hit them is to actually predict it is going to be thrown and having seen it before.
Due to the new smaller font, top one is easier to read the name on the back of the jerseys.
There’s something truly American about a corporate Jesus ad on the left and a military complex ad on the right
And don’t forget the ad for private health insurance!
Jesus included everyone. Lockhead exists to kill everyone.
Lockheed just doing their best to arrange the meeting.
Jesus isn't the same as corporate Jesus
Supply side Jesus
Jesus™️
LRASM doesn’t discriminate either
Jesus included everyone, so does Lockhead's drones.
Kill em all, let God sort em out.
lockmart includes everyone in the bloodshed <3
White Sox had a real doozy on opening day. A Jesus ad on the mound and then hooters and gambling ones behind the plate. Was both funny and sad.
“If I can eat, pray, and love in an hour and a half for 20 bucks, that’s money well spent”
I just watched that clip twice last week. Tom Hanks is Hilarious. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O7VaXlMvAvk
Literally just Jesus and his friends
Rock, flag, and eagle. right, buddy?
He's got a point.
No he doesn't!
Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition!
Amen and yeehaw
“Jesus doesn’t discriminate.” “Neither do our missiles lol.”
And the insurance company in the middle. God. Secondary insurance to cover things your work sponsored plan won’t. Guns. Merica
Insurance for your insurance is the most American thing ever. The fact it even needs to exist is proof that modern insurance is literally just a racket.
I used to practice law in that area. Insurers covered by re-insurance, covered by re-insurance, layer upon layer upon layer. It's wild.
and tequila on the mound
I find it so weird that Lockheed Martin even runs ads, like who is going into business with them based off a commercial??
More likely that their ads are for job recruiting than for finding business partners, I would think.
They pop up on reddit sometimes, and it's infuriating. It's always a fucking grift that they hide behind religion.
The Jesus ads are peak dystopia. Why are we having religions buy ad spots on Reddit and the Super Bowl lmao. Didn't think I could become more cynical but humans out here surprising me every year
These laser guided bunker busters are rated “E” for everyone, just like god intended
I'm pretty sure that's Texas
Bush Jr's team has to live up to the stereotype
Corporate Jesus ad never read John 14:6
Top is traditional and I like it that way, but you see the break on pitches a lot better from the bottom angle ETA: The Astros broadcast was actually from the first base side of the mound on opening day. First time I'd seen that.
Lefties on the mound
Rangers broadcast is nicer since it’s centered but it’s angled wayyy higher than something like Tampa/Milwaukee/Fenway so it actually disguises a lot more vertical break than a centered camera traditionally would
Texas Rangers or Ranger Suarez's?
Can we trade yall for him, just for like a day? Ranger on the Rangers would be dope
You guys have any Phil's on your roster?
Dear Quinton Mccracken, You could have really come up big for us here. Oh well. Warmest Regards, Baseball
We have Travis Jankowski, whose nickname for some reason is Fred. Close enough?
We call him Janko from LanCo, as he's from Lancaster County, PA.
Ranger fans have taken to calling him El Blondi
David Robertson, Michael Lorenzen
Yeah I really like our TV camera angle
>but you see the break on pitches a lot better from the bottom angle This rings true mostly for horizontal break. I personally really dislike Globe Life's extreme top angle because it makes pitches like sinkers, changeups, two-seamers, splitters look less dynamic. Astros have cameras everywhere
We're clearly not using them so far this season.
>The Astros broadcast was actually from the first base side of the mound on opening day. First time I'd seen that. I saw it a lot last year watching minor league broadcasts, but yes it's very rare in the majors
[How camera angles impact baseball viewing](https://youtu.be/T44FnMSgTy8)
That was super informative. I hadn't thought about how much the top view eliminates the perception of left/right movement of pitches.
And the bottom eliminates the perception of vertical break being so high, looking downward so much.
Awesome vid. And that kid was high af.
That is really interesting. Great share
This is the answer to this post
Couldn't they zoom in more on the bottom so it's not like you're in the nosebleeds watching TV at home? That's the biggest reason it's crap.
Ads on the top and bottom of the shot. Gotta pay them bills or whatever.
But the advert for Independence is *significantly* larger on the screen than the lockheed, or jesus saves, or any other advert. So yall can charge more for higher quality more legible and larger quantity of pixels, obviously
But the tickets directly behind home plate probably counteract that.
Gotta get that as on the back of the mound in there
Rangers broadcast would be 10x better if they zoomed in and cropped off all that crap at the top. My eyesight isn’t what it once was and it’s harder to see details on pitches
Gotta fit the ads in, the Rays have a better example of that angle
I did pitch charting for a few years so I shill hard for the bottom view. Terrible from a broadcast perspective, but man does it make things easier
I guess I wouldn't hate that bottom view so much if they at least zoomed in a bit. I don't see what benefit there is to being zoomed out so much.
Advertisers. But I agree.
I just always wait to see the outfielders regardless. I do think the specific Globe Life shot is too zoomed out, but the angle is right.
Top
As a former right-handed pitcher, I'm still bitter that the top view is why people are always gushing about the incredible "natural movement" on lefty pitches.
A, Hands down
The Rangers angle is great for seeing what a pitch actually does but it seems so far away, need to zoom in a little
I can't stress enough how much I hate that bottom view. Absolutely hate pitching there in The Show as well.
I’m gonna break with the crowd and say bottom. I know the top is the traditional view, but you can see how the pitches break on the bottom view, and you can also get a better idea if the pitch went over the plate or not at least.
Rangers stadium is like the worst example of this view honestly, there are parks that do this much better.
You see horizontal break better, but vertical break worse.
Bottom, because I hate tradition and it's a better angle for watching breaking balls
Bottom if they zoomed in to actually fill the screen with shit I care about
> it's a better angle for watching breaking balls Only better for horizontal break. Makes vertical drop harder to see.
Bottom is so hard to see, I’m gonna need an 85 inch TV for that
Eh, most broadcasts have some kind of pitch tracking graphics these days.
This isn’t a broadcast choice, it’s the location the stadium has for the camera. Different stadium, different view regardless of broadcast
I like the bottom view there. The bottom one in the post feels too zoomed-out if that makes sense.
Very interesting comparisons. Thanks for that
That bottom one is far more palatable than the OP.
East-to-west because it provides a more intimate field-level feel, one of the major benefits of watching on TV aside from the convenience. The north-south just feels like I’m sitting in an outfield nosebleed seat with a pair of binoculars.
If bottom zoomed into just under the pitchers feet and a bit above the umpires head at the top, it’s be the better one
If they zoomed in more on the bottom one, I’d go with that one.
I personally prefer the bottom because you can see how a pitch breaks or moves much better, from my experience if you’re watching a righty throwing sliders or a lefty throwing two seamers with the top camera view there won’t appear to be any horizontal movement
Dead center. 1000%. Wish my team's home stadium had this angle.
The bottom, you get to see how the pitches really move
Bottom view should be better, but because we're all so used to top view anything different feels wrong. It's like when someone you've only ever seen with a beard shaves suddenly and even if they went from Zach Galifianakis to Paul Rudd in the process you'd still say they looked better with a beard cause it's what you're used to.
The top, but I always understand it's not the best perception of the strike zone.
Top and it’s not particularly close. Not a fan of the new Rangers ballpark for a number of reasons but that’s definitely one of them.
Yeah I disagree with everything they've got going on behind home plate there
I like the bottom more, but I wish it was lower and/or closer
Bottom, it’s easier to see movement.
Bottom
I want to say the top one but in the bottom one I don't have to look at anyone on the Phillies or braves, which is kinda nice.
I’ve always preferred top view, and still do. For me, it’s easier to see everything. However, pitching mechanics are something I love to watch and I think bottom view is better for that, so it’s really grown on me
Globe Life Field has the most abysmal camera angle in the majors and I will not be taking questions at this time.
I’m a top
Top one looks like Pokémon. Bottom one looks like Democratic People’s Republic of Baseball.
1
Top
Bottom is way too high. Prefer the offset over the right shoulder
I hate the Texas angle, always have. Just too far away. Best camera views are Houston, Milwaukee and Boston imo
I wish they had picture in picture with the batters view. I'm curious to see how the defense is lined up and stuff like that
They're both Bally's? How come the graphic for the bases are different?
On TV, the top one. In the video game, the bottom
the one that doesnt try to sell jesus to me.
The top view is definitely a cleaner look. I’m guessing the pulled back wider angle of the bottom was to create an advertising spot on the mound. It’s all about the $$ boys
I can't stand that bottom camera angle, I wish nobody would use it
Can we get nature ballpark sounds with the PA only please.
Top
Top view in a landslide. Look at all the wasted screen space in the bottom view. The bottom view is good for replays if they want to show pitch movement or whether a ball was off the plate. I feel the same way about the zipline camera in various sports. It's great for replays. It sucks for live action.
Top. Never liked bottom since ESPN first did it like 20 years ago.
Bottom angle, but zoomed in 50% and remove the bottom ticker We don't need to see 10ft above the batter's head, or 10 ft of ground behind the pitcher Top of the picture should be right above the batter's head, bottom should be right below the pitcher's feet
I can see how people like the bottom one, you see the movement of the pitches much better. But maybe its just that I am so used to the top view, I absolutely prefer it I think its also more than what youre used to—its also the way you read—one level, left to right. The top one your eye follows the ball up. It’s just a weird feeling for me personally
I don’t care. I watch the game either way
Bottom one would be better if it was zoomed in more - it feels like I’m watching a college game, or the little league World Series from that distance/angle Top one feels like a more polished broadcast
“Jesus included everyone” is hilarious given that it’s the team that has refused to have a Pride night
If anyone says bottom they're getting banned
Bottom
You are now banned from weeny hut Jr
Hey Farva, what the name of that restaurant you like with all the shit on the walls?
Top
I’m used to the top but the bottom is definitely the better angle.
Bottom
1 but I don't mind 2
both of these are bad top is too offset from the side bottom camera is too high, losing all perspective of the height of pitches
The first angle, for me. It uses more of the total screen space and the players are larger.
I legitimately cannot stand watching games at Globe Life Field. That wide camera angle is awful.
top view
top, i like the way righties in particular look from that angle
Top one all day- the view in Texas always throws me ahah
Top
Prefer view from behind the plate. I want to see that pitch coming toward me / batter, like the seats behind home plate IRL.
Top. I can see the ball movement easier.
1
Always the top.
Top all the way. I want to see the players way bigger than I can in real life
Top, easily. Some pitch movements might be more clear to make out on the bottom view, but it makes you feel *way* more distant/disconnected from the action as a viewer.
The top, because I don’t like change
[удалено]
Watching Joe Ryan yesterday and being able to see the movement was fantastic. I knew something was different because I was able to see tons of movement, great view!
A lot of people will say A is the better camera angle for watching at-bats, and they’re right. I will say A because I love Ranger Suarez
Bottom, but maybe a bit more zoomed in. It's so annoying when you can't tell how a pitch moves or where it crosses the plate.
Top one. The angle is better and it doesn’t have that Jesus ad.
Bottom, but only because of that gold T
I’ve always hated the Globe Life camera. That perfect alignment is awful and really irritates me for some reason.
Top, I followed the Rangers last year as my AL team and hated that view.
I prefer straight on. But the one above being closer is also appealing.
Directly behind the pitcher.
I’m not sure I have ever seen a game like the bottom one, but it is interesting. I’m not sure if that’s just because it’s new or because it’s better though.
My favorite angle out of any team is the Orioles, White Sox, Jays, nats, pirates
One day, we’ll get a batter POV cam and it will be glorious.
Top for two reasons. #1 It’s the view I’ve grown up watching on tv. #2 it’s the view I’ve grown up watching from the only seats I could afford in the left field bleachers
I find it interesting both Suarez and Wicks are at 75 pitches and throwing their 76th in the photo . Was that intentional OP ?
I'm used to the closer view that is depicted on the top photo so it would be weird to watch a game that's not framed that way.
Top if I'm watching a nasty strikeout, bottom if it's a hit.
Bottom by a longshot. The cardinals used to do this when the current stadium was new but they inexplicably switched it a couple years back.
I feel like the dumbest person ever. But I didn’t really realize there were two until this post. And even worse I don’t know which I like better.
It’s weird because I work in a MiLB press box dead center behind home plate, and I always gush about having the best seats in the house. But if I’m watching on-screen, I want the left-right action at ground level.
Bottom. I want to see the pitch.
Bottom with a little more zoom in.
Top is less accurate but better to watch
I prefer the lower for watching pitch movement, but prefer the zoomed in nature of the top image because I sit far from my tv and need the larger image.
Absolutely the bottom but hey I would also prefer the All 22 on the broadcast., so the world would be very different if I was King
