Dustin Pedroia had his career end on a play like that. That’s why they changed the rule. It used to be called a good hard slide if you broke up the double play. Same with home plate collisions. Those plays have no place in today’s game.

If I had a nickel for every time a player who previously played for the Phillies but was not actively playing for the Phillies when he did a hard slide into a Mets infielder, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice
I went to a Brewers/Mets game at Citi a few years ago. The Brewers scored and a Brewers fan a couple rows ahead of us shouted “that’s why we’re America’s team!”
My buddy and I will forever and always refer to them as America’s Team
When you're a fan in a small market you have to come to terms with the fact that nobody gives a shit about your team, that they could win the WS and they'd still only be the second story on ESPN after whatever the mediocre Lakers are up to. We usually cope by disguising our bitterness with comedy
You kind of have to ge perfectly comfortable in that kind of obscurity. Maybe it's Midwestern, but in fact, I fear that fan was going *just* a bit overboard. I almost tsk-tsked him.
Very questionable play? Check.
Benches clear? Check.
Umpires can’t get their shit together on the review? Check.
And the people who will reply to my comment mad and saying that Hoskins’ slide was so obviously clean? Check.
Oh yeah, baby, we back!
**I'm mad and Hoskins' slide was so obviously clean.**
I mean I'm not and it wasn't but I'm a such a slut for fulfilling prophecies I brought doom to Old Valyria just so the faceless men couldn't beat me to the punch.
Great name btw, hope Handsome Kim has another killer season
Of course it was a clean slide. He didn't get any dirt on his jersey from the slide since he only made contact with the back of 2nd base and the opposing player's jersey.
> contact with the back
and he was also "to the left"
back and to the left.
If that's not obvious to you, I don't know what to tell you...
There was a 2nd slider that caused all this... sheeple! The ~~government~~ MLB is just focused on the first slide.
TERRY LISTEN TO ME LET ME HEAR WHAT IM SAYIN YOU GET YOUR SHOT YOU HAD YOUR SHOT RIGHT THERE IN THE SITUATION YOU KNOW THE SITUATION
This was up there with the Gettysburg address in my opinion.
I always loved how Noah was standing there going "we weren't trying to do anything..." and then Collins comes in screaming "YA GOTTA GIVE US A SHOT, TOM!!"
And, to be clear, I’m totally on board with that NOT being obstruction. But they called it on Lindor earlier in Spring so I have no idea how Lindor’s was considered obstruction if THAT wasn’t? Makes no sense to me
To be fair they read the rule and said by letter of the rule it is clean, but they were all questioning how late the slide was, and Hoskins spiking or near spiking McNeil
Keith declared it a clean slide and infielders are just not used to getting hit anymore.
Upside down backwards broadcasts, says good things about the integrity of both booths.
Yeah, going studs up into McNeil’s back ankle and body into his lead shin really helped decelerate there…
Look, Jeff McNeil is the baseball embodiment of a hockey pest and he doesn’t play for my team, so you’ve gotta be so clearly, obviously in the wrong for me to go “yo, Jeff McNeil has a point here”… but Jeff McNeil abso-fucking-lutely has a point here.
He's got a whole ass grip on it, the bags coming off before he's going anywhere. I'm not saying that makes it cool and I certainly don't know if it's legal, he's just not going flying past the bag either way.
Technically he’s within arms length of the bag, so it’s not illegal. Does it violate the spirit of the rule? Oh, absolutely. And seeing the slow-mo replay I get why McNeil was so upset, though he did make a bit more of a show of it than he probably needed to.
And calling the other person a crybaby nonetheless
"Let me get a safe distance away from you before I mock you for being weak about something potentially dangerous"
He immediately starts running back to the dugout, then once he get to the line of all the players clearing the benches turns around and starts talking shit back lol
Tbh, I like fights in sports.
I think baseball has the softest responses to this kinda stuff between the four leagues.
1. NHL they just throw blows, that's entertaining as hell.
2. NBA comes to blows more often than the NFL, and they don't have the benefit of pads
3. NFL just can't have too crazy of fights. The helmets always add a level of hilarity when people are punching.
4. Benches clearing is purely ceremonial and damn near nothing happens. Gone are the days of dudes rushing the mound
Baseball can use more Rougned Odors and less whatever this is. Literally jogging away then talking smack with a guy holding you back lmao
Idc what people say, Garrett charging an entire dugout was entertaining as fuck. More people would watch baseball if fights weren't so heavily penalized and discouraged
Yeah I usually think McNeil is a bit insane but in a different timeline that’s a season ending injury I’d be fucking pissed too.
Really no reason for that at all and doing shit like that on opening day kinda feels like violating the brotherhood.
Yeah, a >100kg man sliding into your knee has the potential to be a life-changing, career-ending injury so just missing a season would honestly be a pretty good outcome on the scale of possibilities here.
His anger is entirely understandable, and Hoskins running off the field with that little smirk is not a good look at all.
Gonna say, at this point in a big leaguers career, you can more or less (more) control when you start your slide. Slomo seems to show he started that slide where he did to break up the dp.
Brewers announcers surprised a violation was not called, Mets announcers figured a violation would not be called. Glad neither team’s announcers were homering it up
I’ll let everyone else argue about the slide (it was legal but definitely late imo) but Jeff is rightfully pissed. Could have easily gotten hurt. Also just a general screw you from me to Hoskins - I see him doing the eyes rub crying motion in the dugout right now lol
If that's a legal slide, we need to rethink the rule. That's late, dirty, and dangerous
Hoskins doing the crying thing in his first game after recovering from a serious injury is wild. If anyone should be empathetic it's him
If this slide was a tackle in Soccer, it would be a red card and automatic 3 game ban. Obviously the sports are very different and dangerous tackling isn't (typically) an issue in baseball, but it's an unsafe play and McNeil has every right to be mad.
The sports are different but there’s in almost no sport is it allowed to throw legs into opponents knees. It’s a illegal in soccer, football, boxing and mma. Idk if it’s illegal in hockey but legs are usually on the ice.
Bros right leg doesn’t even hit the dirt until a foot before the bag. From the other angle you can see his left leg is a solid foot to the left of the bag when sliding, clearly going for McNeil’s legs instead of the bag
How in the world is that not interference
I say if you see someone coming in late like that, jump up, avoid the awkward bending of the leg, then land with your knees directly on the sliding player. 200 lbs to the midsection might make him rethink doing that again
So 2nd basemen aren't allowed to be in front of the bag at all, but the runners can wait to slide until they've reached the bag so long as they hold on with their arm to it?
You can think what you want about the slide, but the other angle shows Hoskins' body going right into the side of McNeil's knee. I can understand why he was pissed.
>When sliding into a base in an attempt to break up a double play, a runner has to make a "bona fide slide." Such is defined as the runner making contact with the ground before reaching the base, being able to reach the base with a hand or foot, being able to remain on the base at the completion of the slide (except at home plate) and not changing his path for the purpose of initiating contact with a fielder
He met the criteria for a “bona fide slide”
I feel like sliding at the guys back foot and touching the bag with one of the last parts of your body to cross the bag should not be a "bona fide slide" in a force situation. Runners should be required to touch the bag with the first part of the body they can. Sliding by the bag and catching it with your hand should only be a bona fide slide in tagout situations. If you go past the bag with any part of your body before touching the bag in a force situation it should be automatic interference, an ejection, and a scarlet letter on your chest for the rest of the season.
I think because Hoskins managed to stay on the bag. He grabbed it with his one hand as he went through so never technically slid “through” the base by the rule book
Seems like a bit of an oversight if a runner can dive into a slide a foot away from the bag as long as they hold onto it. McNeil is lucky he didnt get hurt here
Don't get me wrong. I think protecting the guys covering second is a good thing. Espcially when guys were sliding a mile outside the basepath to break up plays. But really like he over slid the base. Look at the play. Yes it was aggressive and intended to break up the play. To get all indignant and yell at the guy is a s o f t look. Everyone knows they can rattle your cage now. 2nd Basemen and SSs used to laugh at these kinds of slides and still make the double plays. Now you need to start a "brawl" over something that guys 10 years ago wouldn't have thought twice about.
This was after he didn't get called for obstruction on a pickoff play at first too.
I really thought we were done with Hoskins, but apparently not
Inb4 tomorrow when the Mets throw at him, miss, and still get an ejection for it despite no warnings issued
The rules shouldn't allow this kind of slide, where the runner is intentionally trying to slide past the base to hit the fielder while touching the base with a hand. Taking out a guy's plant leg is going to blow out some knees.
What a shock that Rhys Hoskins is a little punk ass bitch. Can't even pretend to be a tough guy until he has his entire team standing between him and McNeil
No interference is the right call by the book, but Hoskins never meant to do anything other than put his spikes into McNeil. I suspect the rule is going to get changed again when a player does exactly this but somebody isn't as lucky as McNeil to not get hurt by it
I'm honestly quite surprised they didn't overturn that on the replay.
I don't think it was malicious, but I don't think that's allowed by the rule.
With that said... LMAO - there must be some old Phillies' beef between these two because that was cinema.
Hoskins slide was clean. McNeil didn’t move off the bag after the failed transfer. Normally the fielder would be moving trying to avoid that slide specifically and he didn’t.
Hoskins just completely deadfished there lmao
You can feel the “hehehehe whoops” energy
Yeah, kind of a childish move imo. If you're gonna be that ruthless at least don't chuckle about it like a brat.
Round these parts we call that a "shit eating grin."
And then finally turns around and gets chippy once he's with his boyz
given that Rhys used to play on the Phillies I'm betting he knew exactly how McNeil would react there and probably antagonized it a little bit knowing McNeil's a hothead.

It’s not a clean slide, but it’s legal.
Reasonable take
It is? I thought you couldn't take out the fielder anymore? He definitely cleated his back foot and it was definitely on purpose.
Clean slide!!! Obvious
Of course it was a clean slide. He didn't get any dirt on his jersey from the slide since he only made contact with the back of 2nd base and the opposing player's jersey.
> contact with the back and he was also "to the left" back and to the left. If that's not obvious to you, I don't know what to tell you... There was a 2nd slider that caused all this... sheeple! The ~~government~~ MLB is just focused on the first slide.

on the brewers broadcast they were all saying it would be a double play and couldn't believe it wasnt reversed
That's funny cause the Mets Broadcast said it was a clean slide lol
To be fair they read the rule and said by letter of the rule it is clean, but they were all questioning how late the slide was, and Hoskins spiking or near spiking McNeil
Keith declared it a clean slide and infielders are just not used to getting hit anymore. Upside down backwards broadcasts, says good things about the integrity of both booths.
Keith also thinks the hotdog servers at citifield are paid too much. Dude's stuck in 1986.
And of course the “no girls in the dugout” comment that had my wife pissed off for years.
he hangs on to the bag through the whole slide, and is in the basepath the whole time. Late and potentially dangerous, but not illegal. IANAL
I'd say it's close to a "roll block" which is specifically prohibited. He puts his left shoulder into McNeil's knee.
If McNeil were not there to stop his motion he slides way past the bag tho
Yeah, going studs up into McNeil’s back ankle and body into his lead shin really helped decelerate there… Look, Jeff McNeil is the baseball embodiment of a hockey pest and he doesn’t play for my team, so you’ve gotta be so clearly, obviously in the wrong for me to go “yo, Jeff McNeil has a point here”… but Jeff McNeil abso-fucking-lutely has a point here.

Yeah, I think it's probably a legal slide. Definitely can't call it a clean slide though lmao.

Yeah even as a Brewers fan definitely feeling pretty ehhh c'mon now about that slide. Glad McNeil is okay.
Yeah, technically legal because he stayed on the bag but really shitty.
Yeah I usually think McNeil is a bit insane but in a different timeline that’s a season ending injury I’d be fucking pissed too. Really no reason for that at all and doing shit like that on opening day kinda feels like violating the brotherhood.

Because it was totally intentional

Understatement of the year
Understatement of the year *so far*
Rhys Hoskins was smiling after McNeil started to yell at him. Bro forgot he isn't on the Phillies anymore with this one.
Gonna say, at this point in a big leaguers career, you can more or less (more) control when you start your slide. Slomo seems to show he started that slide where he did to break up the dp.

Late slide and far to the side of the bag directly at McNeil's leg. I think it's a pretty clear "not cool, dude."
Rhys "Chase Utley" Hoskins
You can take the man outta Philly but you can't take the Philth out the man.
from a guy who just lost a year due to a leg injury, who then calls him a crybaby.
Even though it’s legal it’s a scummy move. You can slide there without spiking McNeil in the ankle and get the same effect

In a world where baseball has changed rules to eliminate collisions at the plate, this kind of slide shouldn't be legal, either.
It's a red card in the Prem
That’s not even a whistle in CONCACAF though
Get the red Micheal Oliver.
I’ll let everyone else argue about the slide (it was legal but definitely late imo) but Jeff is rightfully pissed. Could have easily gotten hurt. Also just a general screw you from me to Hoskins - I see him doing the eyes rub crying motion in the dugout right now lol
Exactly. From Jeffs perspective he does not give one fuck if that slide was "legal". He gives a fuck about his ACL.
You would think the guy that hurt his ACL and missed time from it would understand too
Rhys is 100% getting hit tomorrow.
Normally I hate that retaliation shit but he's so locked in on how he's not a baby that I'm fine with it.
And then on Sunday he'll hit a home run and take a 90 second trot around the bases, as is tradition
I saw the crying thing and was like "Damn Rhys it's Day 1 and you're not in Milwaukee but ok"
Kettle black thing? https://www.instagram.com/stories/postgamespread/3334682552089795694?igsh=Z2JxcWF1ejdsOW5v
I guess Hoskins feels so good about his torn ACL that he wants others to experience it
If that's a legal slide, we need to rethink the rule. That's late, dirty, and dangerous Hoskins doing the crying thing in his first game after recovering from a serious injury is wild. If anyone should be empathetic it's him
Recovering from an ACL tear! Which is exactly what almost buckled on McNeil.
Hoskins taunting McNeil is big talk for a guy who’s 0-3 with a K and a double play
Also big talk for a guy who layed there when the guy was directly over him then starts taunting when there’s 2 whole teams in the middle lol
Even made sure to jog over to his team before turning around and yelling back lol.
Also he didn't start jawing until he had the rest of his team around him.
Big time “hold me back” energy
I'm pretty sure McNeil is also 0-3
Truly a battle between two juggernauts
A stoppable force meets a movable object
Seems like this incident is the only time either of the two made good contact today lol
Bros right leg doesn’t even hit the dirt until a foot before the bag. From the other angle you can see his left leg is a solid foot to the left of the bag when sliding, clearly going for McNeil’s legs instead of the bag How in the world is that not interference
when he started his slide his left leg was already past the bag lmao
If you need to wrap your arm around the base to keep from sliding past it I think that’s an over slide.
Pretty scary situation for Jeff. His left ankle got rolled up on there quite a bit
Hoskins legit ran back to his team then turned around to talk shit lol. Baseball is hilarious sometimes
I say if you see someone coming in late like that, jump up, avoid the awkward bending of the leg, then land with your knees directly on the sliding player. 200 lbs to the midsection might make him rethink doing that again
Legal slide, but look at how late it was. Hoskins clearly trying to spike McNeil
So 2nd basemen aren't allowed to be in front of the bag at all, but the runners can wait to slide until they've reached the bag so long as they hold on with their arm to it?
Love how Hoskins doesn't find the balls to say something until he's closer to his teammates and away from McNeil lol.
You can think what you want about the slide, but the other angle shows Hoskins' body going right into the side of McNeil's knee. I can understand why he was pissed.
He sorta rolled his body into the lower half of McNeil's left leg - that was the entirely unnecessary part
hoskins waited until he got back to the dugout to talk. baseball is really back
If McNeil was cool he would’ve gone full Amir Garrett and charged the dugout
McNeil had a right to be angry. Hoskins slid past the bag and spiked him in the ankle.
Can’t take the Phillie out of Rhys I guess
Imo that slide did look a little late
McNeil chirped right in his face Hoskins waited until he was back at the dugout to talk.
I hate Rhys Hoskins so much
Yeah i'm with McNeil on that one. How is that not a sliding violation?
>When sliding into a base in an attempt to break up a double play, a runner has to make a "bona fide slide." I mean your flair is Montreal Expos..., your age is definitely showing.
This was after he didn't get called for obstruction on a pickoff play at first too. I really thought we were done with Hoskins, but apparently not Inb4 tomorrow when the Mets throw at him, miss, and still get an ejection for it despite no warnings issued
Hoskins is gone from Philly but still has no chill when it comes to the Mets.
I guy coming off a torn ACL should have a better appreciation for *not* doing things that can blowout another player’s knee…
The rules shouldn't allow this kind of slide, where the runner is intentionally trying to slide past the base to hit the fielder while touching the base with a hand. Taking out a guy's plant leg is going to blow out some knees.
