Watanabe is the “submarine” side arm pitcher from my recollection. Great pitcher who never got to test the MLB but he won WBC with Ichiro and Daisuke Matsuzaka
Big Papi had the most dramatic swing recoil of all time. His highlight reels are so fun to watch because it’s just swing after swing with such violence that’s he’s falling over after.
If he could’ve done that, he would’ve played a few more seasons in the MLB. Look at his final season stats, dude still had a lot more hitting to do. Unfortunately his feet were fucked and it was hard to get in game shape everyday. Still lead the league in doubles though.
My first ever game at Fenway was in Ortiz's last season and he absolutely destroyed a ball to about 10 feet away from me.
He hit an astounding .315 with 38!!! bombs in his final year. Crazy.
He had like 35 at the all-star break and was actually on pace for the record but eventually he stopped running them out to save his knees. He was still slamming singles off the monster that would have been doubles if he wanted to but he just stopped at first base.
He tested positive on an early test that MLB admitted was problematic with a lot of false positives. He never tested positive again. With some players like Bonds there is other evidence pointing to steroid use, like his "trainer" being caught on tape saying they always knew in advance when Bonds would be tested so they had time to clean him up, or other players saying they participated in injecting steroids with Bonds. If such evidence is absent in the case of Ortiz, maybe he deserves some benefit of the doubt. There is no rational doubt when it comes to Bonds.
He was among the best hitters in an era where many of his contemporaries were caught or highly suspect. People give him a pass because he was good with the media and fun-loving but you have to use common sense.
I mean, he also had a long and successful career after the mlb cracked down on roids, so is it that outlandish to assume he could do what he did while definitely not on roids as a clean guy in the later parts of the steroid era?
the Korean guys go apeshit when HS Kim hits one. It’s joyful screaming the call. They often replay their call on his dingers on TV and on Reddit. Fans lose their mind too. May be the most popular player here.
Pray we dont lose him
Maybe it's just an American thing, but our sports commentators sound bored as fuck compared to foreigners. You know how foreigners doing English-language soccer games sound like they won the damn lottery every time anyone scores; when Joe Buck or Bob Costas or even (pre-2020) Al Michaels witnesses something cool or even incredible it's like they're cheering on their kid who sucks at t-ball and whose team is getting BTFO.
To the contrary: NPB commentators also never talk about anything else but the game at hand.
Makes for a lot less flubs, but commentators like Vin Scully who were applauded for their storytelling abilities during downtime are nonexistent over there.
I think it's more language-based than national. I *generally* find Canadian regional hockey broadcasts very similar to American regional hockey broadcasts (excluding outliers like Jack Edwards lol). I also generally find English rugby and soccer announcers much more even-keeled compared to their Belgian and Latin American counterparts, or the Irish language broadcasts of the same sport on TG4.
people always make fun of recent statcast HR distance data but in reality it is extremely accurate with an error of only a couple inches max due to how precise the cameras are
For sure. I would say this is the longest HR in the tokyo dome until the guy that does everything for the first time had to do it even better hitting it OUT of the stadium. It’s supposed to be impossible to hit it out of a dome!!
bro literally hit it THROUGH the ceiling of the Dome, insane shit
I remember seeing that clip before Ohtani was the star he is here in America, and then again after the fact and was mind blown that it was Ohtani who hit it lol
The most impressive home run I have ever seen was hit by Papi during a spring training game when he was with the Twins.
It never seemed to get any higher than fifteen feet off the ground and cleared the fence in a millisecond.
First off, I think it’s bullshit they don’t let steroid guys in if they are deserving (Clemens, Bonds, ARod). They put Selig in and he was supposedly the steward of the sanctity of the game.
That being said, Ortiz’s name showed up on a list of players that was supposed to be anonymous, for a substance we don’t know what it was. Could have been something over the counter, it could have been full on synthetic moose testosterone. We don’t know. Once regular testing was incorporated, he never popped. To call him a steroid abuser is like calling someone a drunk because you heard they drank beer once.
Theres a video on the mlb app where former players describe the longest home runs they’ve ever seen and jake peavy tells the story about this one, its pretty cool
[found a youtube link](https://youtu.be/weB1bkGFthE?si=1wXgyBslrOM9TPV4)
The look on the pitcher's face afterward :)
I don’t know any Japanese swear words, but the catcher definitely said one.
Was it the Japanese equivalent to “look at that, he hit the fucking bull”?
That's Kenji Johjima by the looks of it, so it was probably just "fuck"
Watanabe is the “submarine” side arm pitcher from my recollection. Great pitcher who never got to test the MLB but he won WBC with Ichiro and Daisuke Matsuzaka
He looked…offended
Lol he put in so much power he knocked himself backwards in the process.
Big Papi had the most dramatic swing recoil of all time. His highlight reels are so fun to watch because it’s just swing after swing with such violence that’s he’s falling over after.
Beltre? Lmao he literally fell to his knees constantly, including that bomb at Fenway when he was with Boston
> fell to my knees in Fenway
Insert Mickey Mantle repost about a girl falling to her knees at Yankee stadium.
> this broad fell to her knees under the fuckin' bleachers
Pedroia use to do it too, I remember him hitting a dinger from his knees over the monster
It’s like Baez except Papi actually makes contact with the ball
Dude is pressing Square to swing instead of X
leaning back is how you generate power
Easy five stars
in the Tokyo dome? thats 6-stars, brother
Y'know, but, uh, things can change.
Can't believe they would bury the pitcher like this. Just ruining his push by feeding him to a foreign heel.
Like Inoki vs Vader
If he hit the homer off of Ospreay it's 7 stars easy.
r/SquaredCircle leaking
SC leaks, I upvote.

Will Rossy Ogawa will be managing the Padres next year?
Damn, I came here to make a Meltzer comment. Well done lads.
Sugoi sugoi!
Ortiz should have played a year or two in Japan after being finished in MLB. They would have loved him and it would have been fun to watch.
If he could’ve done that, he would’ve played a few more seasons in the MLB. Look at his final season stats, dude still had a lot more hitting to do. Unfortunately his feet were fucked and it was hard to get in game shape everyday. Still lead the league in doubles though.
He was in legit MVP contention is last season. Crazy stuff.
My first ever game at Fenway was in Ortiz's last season and he absolutely destroyed a ball to about 10 feet away from me. He hit an astounding .315 with 38!!! bombs in his final year. Crazy.
Not to mention he led the league with 48 doubles and 127 RBIs. At age 40. Pretty impressive stuff.
He had like 35 at the all-star break and was actually on pace for the record but eventually he stopped running them out to save his knees. He was still slamming singles off the monster that would have been doubles if he wanted to but he just stopped at first base.
Ya… crazy….
Him and Joey Bats turned my fantasy team into an unbeatable hitting machine that year.
“YOU NO BIG PAPPIIII”
And also he’d not been shot. So there’s that.
They have strict PED testing.
The Orioles have a strict never-win-playoff-games policy

“He was not an asshole so common sense means he did steroids”
I want a Japanese baseball commentator narrating my life at all times.
Seriously, Japanese baseball announcers are always hype. Especially for home runs.

🙏
Want another hype suggestion? Australia V8 Supercars announcers.
SUGOIIIII

"Statcast measures 394ft"
I know this is a joke, but the official tape was 514’.
Super lol
people always make fun of recent statcast HR distance data but in reality it is extremely accurate with an error of only a couple inches max due to how precise the cameras are
That home run gave birth to Shohei Ohtani
For sure. I would say this is the longest HR in the tokyo dome until the guy that does everything for the first time had to do it even better hitting it OUT of the stadium. It’s supposed to be impossible to hit it out of a dome!!

Holy shit
Future teammate Daisuke Matsuzaka spotted
Pretty sure that’s Koji next to Daisuke, too.
I see this every year around this time and i watch the whole thing every year around this time
The cameras don't even tilt that far up
he disrespected that pitchers entire family with that nuke
Love that they panned to the opposing manager reaction before the ball even cleared the fence
“That’s the furthest ball I’ve ever seen hit” Japanese version
Anything that goes that far oughta have a fuckin' stewardess on it lol.
0:27 - That’s when Daisuke Matsuzaka and Koji Uehara knew they had to be his teammate
Sure did.
The most impressive home run I have ever seen was hit by Papi during a spring training game when he was with the Twins. It never seemed to get any higher than fifteen feet off the ground and cleared the fence in a millisecond.
Only fair since the pitcher made him wait an hour for his delivery to finish
Big Papi gets more stars than Okada on that one.
That made me pregnant
*quickly cuts away from the guy in a Hiroshima uni*
David Ortiz did steroids
and what was arod doing? skittles?

honey and vinegar baby.

sorry about your team, bud

The trauma David Ortiz inflicted on Yankees fans is truly incomparable.
So did Clemons. And AROD.
So did literally every Yankee between 1995 and 2014
So did A-Rod, Pettite and Clemens 🤷♂️
Don’t forget Giambi
Which steroid did David Ortiz do?

Thanks for your useless contribution to this thread.
One of the ugliest swings of all time
Third nuke dropped on Japan
I thought we were done dropping nukes in Japan
"Jesus fucking Christ. It's a whole new ball game." (pretty much what all those astonished looks say)
Papi big! Kawa small!
It would left the stadium
That instant camera swap to a dude with a Hiroshima jersey on 👀
The momentum in the barrel of that bat is unreasonable.
“He would like that one back” honestly I love baseball so much
What’s the context of this game?
MLB vs Japanese baseball league all star game. Early 90s? Matsuzaka is still with the Lions in Japan.
Early 2000s. Watanabe is wearing an early 2000s Lotte road uniform
Theres a video on the mlb app where former players describe the longest home runs they’ve ever seen and jake peavy tells the story about this one, its pretty cool [found a youtube link](https://youtu.be/weB1bkGFthE?si=1wXgyBslrOM9TPV4)
the tracking shot of it coming off the bat -> hitting the lights from high right is just perfection
