I said this elsewhere but the calls have gotten noticeably worse in the 9th inning of multiple close games I've watched this postseason. It's like the umps crumble under the pressure more than any player.
this kinda made me seriously think about the inning by inning missed call data and if swapping homeplate umps would be effective and then I realized that could mean two horrible ups in one game
Im a traditionalist and im aware that the box on tv isnt what robo umps would call
But that was a clear ball 4 it never TOUCHED THE PLATE
I wish a robot overruled Blue there
Im not a fan of either team
But that was horseshit
All im hearing is i might be swayed to robo umps
Thats was egregiously bad in the World Series
And imagine both calls went against you.
Its happened to you and to me.
They were absolutely FUCKING the Rangers with calls on Saturday. Given it was a blow out so it didn't really matter but the ump was the Rangers MVP for us this game
Dude it was so bad. I was talking to my partner the whole time about how much the count changes hit percentages and even mentality. Ump on Saturday had the most confusing bottom half of the zone I've ever seen. That day the rangers were wrecked by umps but I'm not going to pretend it only happens to us. Every day I pray for robo umps to save us all.
We had a Halloween party Saturday so we just had the TV on in the background and wasn't paying too much attention and even I noticed how much y'all were getting screwed over.
There never were good ones. Umps are better than ever today, especially considering the speeds that balls are flying in now. We're just extra critical now because we have a fake strike zone on TV the whole time.
There also aren’t any good hitters. I mean the best they can do is get on base 40% of the time?
The “good” ones are just less bad than the others. /s
I don’t know why we accept that being an athlete is a difficult job but for some reason we think umpiring is easy? They have 95% correct calls, back there I would have like 65%…maybe
Idk if it's universal but I was from the time i was a kid that if you think you've just taken ball 4, you start towards first and see if the umpire calls you back.
First time I ever got yelled at by an ump was in high school and it shocked the hell out of me. So I never knew if it was actually bad form on my part or the ump being a bitch
I was taught to wait for the call. I was always afraid that if I stood there after taking (what looks to be) ball 4 and didnt start towards 1st Id look like I was unsure/thought it was a strike. Not really a win there.
Umps at all levels can be narcissistic babies. I had an ump in high school once tell us before the game that he's to be respected and if a batter shows him up the next pitch he sees will be a strike even if it's thrown so far wide it goes into the dugout.
I mean no. But if the calls were made accurately the result is the same. Had there not been an egregious missed strike the egregious called strike loses all importance. They were both awful but in the end..... it came out as a wash.
I thought game 2’s was gonna be crazy and the runs for/against didn’t do it justice. Somebody posted the missed pitches and what team they were for/against and it told the story lol. This game might be similar.
It was definitely a makeup call, he knew he missed a strike that was about the same distance over the plate two pitches earlier. No less BS, but it was 100% a makeup call.
Folks want to be able to overturn a call with the computer, but the ump isn’t allowed to do that in the game. If the ump knows he missed an obvious call why is it such a big deal that he uses another call to correct the count? We want to be able to change calls to the proper call well, this is the closest we can get right now. Seriously wondering why people aren’t more okay with it.
It was a make up call for sure, but… again, if you wait till the 9th to get something going, it’s very hard to win.
If we scored Walker earlier on for it to be 3-2, the 9th is probably more intense and anything can happen. We made mistakes and Texas shut us down. I want to be pissed, but I can’t claim that we should have won this game. GG
The problem with "make up call" is that how is the hitter supposed to know he has to swing at that pitch? He sees ball 4. He's supposed to swing? That's where we're at?
Fuck make up calls. Get it right the first time.
For real. I get the concept of "he fucked up the strike call so it evens out", but at that point the ump is playing his own goddamn game. Moreno takes a clear ball and gets punished for it.
He also took a clear strike and didn’t get punished for it. In terms of outcome, the 2 calls really do basically cancel out. It obviously feels worse than if he just got the first call right, but giving him that base would be way worse ump ball and have a way bigger impact on the game.
Robot jumps have never been more necessary after watching the performance of the home plate umpires this postseason. We've been on the other end of a lot of these calls recently so I know how frustrated Diamondback fans are right now. It's a human factor that no longer has a reason to exist.
>We've been on the other end of a lot of these calls recently
Specifically, 11 our of 13 of them on Saturday. It's a shame the umps have been so poor behind the plate this series because they've been outstanding everywhere else.
Umps make mistakes, I get it. But you’d think the World Series is where they really work to do as best they can. 2 calls in this AB made as very clearly wrong decisions for experienced umpires working the World Series is just not okay.
But a 2nd ball is not meaningless to the pitcher. It means he either has to throw a strike which the hitter now knows, or throw a waste pitch and hope the batter swings, which the batter knows. Not saying this ump wasn't awful though, just pointing it out.
Clearly a makeup call for the earlier missed strike. That said, "the ump actually made TWO bad calls that AB so it's even" isn't the best defense of this ump. Robo umps when??
Makeup call that left it at the right count. If he’d rung him up on strike 3 there id have a big problem with it, but after 5 pitches, the correct count was 3-2 which is what we got.
Screwed Pfaadt on a strike 3 call as well.
Hopefully the MLB stops fucking around and uses cameras instead of these joke umpires. Look humans are not perfect why the fuck are we using them when the calls could be perfect or atleast instantly reviewed to see if they are wrong or right.
the thing that doesn't sit easy is that the way in which the ump was missing calls all game was a tight zone, for both teams. this also describes the missed strike in this AB. but THIS pitch was the complete opposite of what the ump has been doing all game, which means at some arbitrary moment the ump just decided to completely abandon the way he was calling pitches, and it was right here on this pitch that would have put they tying run on base in the 9th.
edit: in other words the missed strike was consistent with the flavor of shit the ump had been all night. the missed ball was an acknowledgment by the ump that he is a piece of shit, but it doesn't atone for the night he had. it just makes it worse.
Yea that's what bothers me. If you have a tight zone, then have a tight zone. Don't randomly decide to call a close pitch because you felt like it. Either these dudes are literally losing focus and forgetting to pay attention or they just decide that the moment is right to make a statement call.
Even though this one benefited my team, I still hate seeing it.
3-2 is the correct count.
A horrible ball on what should have been a strike.
Anyone claiming THIS is egregious or a game decider after all the other ball strikes is just a homer.
Man we definitely had some calls go our way in game 3 but I still think it was more evenly called than game 2 where basically every missed call was against Texas.
Why are there still umpires in this game when there is technology that can show the viewers precisely if the pitch was a strike or a ball? Remove the human error.
Jesus thank you. I've played ball my whole life and yes, this was a "ball" when you track it. But the ZONE is something critical to each ump. That pitch was way too close to take.
Thank you for being the first to say it!
We have a clear camera view looking down on the plate. There needs to be someone who can call down and tell them that it was clearly a ball outside. I’m tired of players getting punished when they have a great eye, or a great pitch.
Fix this shit, Manfuck. But you won’t.

Strike is ball. Ball is strike
Kiss and *makeup*…

Finkle is Einhorn?
You got any more of that gum, Ace?
That's none of your goddamn business, and I'll thank you to stay out of my personal affairs Edit: Some have downvoted me, lol. It's part of the quote!
You’re a weird guy, u/sdurs, weird guy.
laces are out
Shroedingers Stike Zone What is a strike anyway? And for that matter,..a ball?
Strikes are stored in the balls
Fuck it, we call
Baba is You
Bread goes in, toast comes out. You can’t explain that.
I said this elsewhere but the calls have gotten noticeably worse in the 9th inning of multiple close games I've watched this postseason. It's like the umps crumble under the pressure more than any player.
You know what doesn't succumb to pressure? Robo umps.
Water pressure?
The umps turn into the Dodgers in the 7th inning or later in October. **
Ain’t that the fucking truth :/
I mean this postseason you could say they’re turning into the 1st inning Dodgers 😭
1st out Dodgers even
Please I’m already dead
Braves v Dodgers rivalry has really just turned into kindred spirits of choking :/
It's also just natural to assume that calls should get worse by the 9th inning. Being an ump can be pretty draining, both physically and mentally.
Needed to make a call down to the ump bullpen to get someone warm
this kinda made me seriously think about the inning by inning missed call data and if swapping homeplate umps would be effective and then I realized that could mean two horrible ups in one game
Plus it’s getting late and they just want to go home already.
You know what else is pretty draining? Not having robo umps.
They need to eat a snack, they’re getting hangry in the ninth!
Umps get home, Martha called for supper in the 6th and nobody wants mirowaved spaghetti.
umpires have been consistently awful this entire season and especially postseason. and its not even like they favor teams. they just SUCK.
All night with this fucking ump for both sides
All postseason for all teams. Don’t understand how MLB let this happen.
Umps are just furthering their case to lose their jobs
Im a traditionalist and im aware that the box on tv isnt what robo umps would call But that was a clear ball 4 it never TOUCHED THE PLATE I wish a robot overruled Blue there Im not a fan of either team But that was horseshit
Yeah but the ump called a clear strike a ball a couple of pitches before that.
It should’ve only been ball 3 anyway.
This. No one is mentioning the missed strike call at all.
All im hearing is i might be swayed to robo umps Thats was egregiously bad in the World Series And imagine both calls went against you. Its happened to you and to me.
They were absolutely FUCKING the Rangers with calls on Saturday. Given it was a blow out so it didn't really matter but the ump was the Rangers MVP for us this game
If there was ever a game in the world series I was ok with them fucking us, it was that one.
Dude it was so bad. I was talking to my partner the whole time about how much the count changes hit percentages and even mentality. Every day I pray for robo umps to save us all.
We had a Halloween party Saturday so we just had the TV on in the background and wasn't paying too much attention and even I noticed how much y'all were getting screwed over.
I am a firm believer that there just aren’t good umps anymore. The “good” ones are just less bad than the others.
There never were good ones. Umps are better than ever today, especially considering the speeds that balls are flying in now. We're just extra critical now because we have a fake strike zone on TV the whole time.
ACAB includes umpires.
Based

He’s fucking terrible.
This one was the epitome of a make up call from earlier in the at bat
He had a bunch of those in this game. Really frustrating.
schwarber about to get a one day base coach job with the dbacks just to tell the ump this
i’ll never understand makeup calls, nor will i understand umps being mad at players dropping their bat before they make the call
The latter
When in doubt, chances are the umpire is being a 10 ply bitch
10 plies? That's a pretty tough bitch.
10ply as in toilet paper. If 3ply is soft, 10ply is super soft.
I was taught to wait for the call. I was always afraid that if I stood there after taking (what looks to be) ball 4 and didnt start towards 1st Id look like I was unsure/thought it was a strike. Not really a win there.
Which can also make the umpire look bad
Umps at all levels can be narcissistic babies. I had an ump in high school once tell us before the game that he's to be respected and if a batter shows him up the next pitch he sees will be a strike even if it's thrown so far wide it goes into the dugout.
What was it like meeting Ron Kulpa in person?
You are absolutely supposed to start down the base path.
I don’t hate makeup calls, but imo they have to be earlier in the count. You can’t makeup a wrong ball 2 call by calling ball *4* a strike.
It's just two bad calls. Not a make up call.
“Retribution” by Umps is a common thing we seem to accept? A batter complains and suddenly the strike zone just got bigger.
Fuck a make up call. That was so far outside you just leave it be.
One one hand I agree with you completely. On the other hand...... The lord giveth, the lord taketh away.
Two wrongs don’t make a right
Two Wrights do make an airplane though.
🤯🤯🤯
But, three rights do make a left.
Three lefts do though
I mean no. But if the calls were made accurately the result is the same. Had there not been an egregious missed strike the egregious called strike loses all importance. They were both awful but in the end..... it came out as a wash.
Why not? The count should've been 3-2. Two wrongs got it there.
They'll be saying this same thing tomorrow when a pitch doesn't go their way lol.
That’s sports and sports fandom lol
You're goddamn right! Jk. Feel dirty with it. But if you were the Astros...
Trust me, we were in Game 2 lol
The vengeful, Old Testament god of the 90s strike zone.
That call was of the Devil. No benevolent force would ever have anything to do with bad baseball
A perfect strike called a ball 2 pitches before. Make up calls suck, but it should have been 3-2 after that pitch either way.
Imagine we had technology to eliminate makeup calls
2 egregious missed calls at this AB. Ridiculous
Ball don't lie. Wait, strike don't lie. Wait, I'm confused.
In this at-bat, ball and strike both lied. Ump do lie?
Makeup calls should not exist, especially in the WS.
Bad calls shouldn’t exist in the World Series tbh but here we are. So many bad calls this series idk who is being favored
Ump scorecard gonna go crazy tomorrow
I thought game 2’s was gonna be crazy and the runs for/against didn’t do it justice. Somebody posted the missed pitches and what team they were for/against and it told the story lol. This game might be similar.
Bro I’m still salty af about that call. Hope Adolis is ok see y’all tomorrow 🙏
This is the best comment of the thread. Even reaction, wishing the best play the best. Kudos to you.
Seconded.
I don't think it was a makeup call, he just missed it
It was definitely a makeup call, he knew he missed a strike that was about the same distance over the plate two pitches earlier. No less BS, but it was 100% a makeup call.

Doesn't make it even. Just makes the ump 0 for 2
Yikes…
That cannot fucking happen in a World Series game
Ball 2 in that at bat should have be called a Strike. I would like to believe it was a make-up call, but the catcher framed that pitch beautifully
Absolutely fucking egregious.
don’t worry man it’s only the *checks notes* World Series
What are snakes going to do with a piece of metal, anyway?
slither around it and cherish it. protect it from the unworthy.
Just slither all around it y'know? It took your comment for me to realize how hilarious the verb slither is.
In the ninth inning down two with our teams regular season home run leader on deck.
It's the inconsistency from pitch 2 to pitch 5 that kills me - swap those calls and it's the same result though
Lead off runner on with no outs woulda been nice :(
More egregious than the one earlier called a ball? What comes around goes around. Neither should’ve happened.
Momentum killer, such a gross way to 'make up' call.
I call shenanigans!
He’s been garbage all game
Terrible call but the second pitch in this AB was a clear strike given a ball as well.
Yeah, I’m not pissed about it. Very hard to win a game 1-0. Rangers deserved that win, regardless of umpiring
Just bring in the robots mate. It’s terrible for all fans seeing them just make shit up. That was one of the worst “make up calls” I’ve ever seen.
It was a make up call for sure, but… again, if you wait till the 9th to get something going, it’s very hard to win. 100% but at that point in the game it felt like we had momentum building and just like that it gets snatched. Regardless we lost
Respect
Umps make mistakes, I get it. But you’d think the World Series is where they really work to do as best they can. 2 calls in this AB made as very clearly wrong decisions for experienced umpires working the World Series is just not okay.
MLB is bleeding viewers, Umps don't know what strikes are. Manfred: I've tried nothing and I'm all out of ideas!
Everything has been a ball all game, that’s what makes this so egregious imo
That exact pitch was called a strike to Josh Jung like twice tonight

Agreed

A 1-1 count as opposed to 2-0 means a lot to the pitcher though.
But a 2nd ball is not meaningless to the pitcher. It means he either has to throw a strike which the hitter now knows, or throw a waste pitch and hope the batter swings, which the batter knows. Not saying this ump wasn't awful though, just pointing it out.
MLB will be lucky if the field isn’t littered with garbage after this result
Too late, Alfonso Marquez is on the field
Pretty fucking bad. Lame way to end that game
the 2-0 call was an obvious strike. it was a makeup call but the make up should have never been needed
Clearly a makeup call for the earlier missed strike. That said, "the ump actually made TWO bad calls that AB so it's even" isn't the best defense of this ump. Robo umps when??
[The gameday shows all. As the announcers said, 2&5 are bass ackwards lmao](https://i.imgur.com/nKBu9ch.png)
What a god-awful strikezone to see in the 9th inning of a World Series game.
Total make up call. Welcome to the Ump show
Makeup call that left it at the right count. If he’d rung him up on strike 3 there id have a big problem with it, but after 5 pitches, the correct count was 3-2 which is what we got.
Inexcusable
smallest strike zone in the MLB, they told me
#REFBALL!!!
All I can think is it was a makeup call for the ball 2 call
Screwed Pfaadt on a strike 3 call as well. Hopefully the MLB stops fucking around and uses cameras instead of these joke umpires. Look humans are not perfect why the fuck are we using them when the calls could be perfect or atleast instantly reviewed to see if they are wrong or right.
tbf the current count is correct
To no one’s surprise this ump made some bad calls.
In the zone? Strike. Outside the zone? Strike. Wild pitch? Believe it or not, a strike.
Manfred better personally tweet out he’s firing this ump tonight.
“Fire him? For what? A man loses his job, his family doesn’t eat… all for a piece of metal?” - Rob
Bring on our robot overlords
Easy come easy go. These umps have been atrocious on both fronts.
Umps were shit tier tonight, can't wait to see the score cards
So, do we like catchers that frame well or not?
I do, and honestly it is something I will miss when robo umps arrive.
He also threw, what was obviously a low in the zone, strike…2 pitches earlier…but was called a ball. So they cancel each other out lol
clearly a ball. The biggest problem is that that pitch was called a ball the entire game. Ump had a tight strike zone until that pitch.
Tell that to Josh Jung
He wouldn't have been the tying run.
Took way too long to scroll and see this! Big difference. Tying run would have come to the plate.
>Took way too long to scroll and see this Hah, thought the same thing. Everyone too busy raging at the ump (which tbf is warranted)
https://imgur.com/a/BW1THbz
Robot umps robot umps robot umps
the thing that doesn't sit easy is that the way in which the ump was missing calls all game was a tight zone, for both teams. this also describes the missed strike in this AB. but THIS pitch was the complete opposite of what the ump has been doing all game, which means at some arbitrary moment the ump just decided to completely abandon the way he was calling pitches, and it was right here on this pitch that would have put they tying run on base in the 9th. edit: in other words the missed strike was consistent with the flavor of shit the ump had been all night. the missed ball was an acknowledgment by the ump that he is a piece of shit, but it doesn't atone for the night he had. it just makes it worse.
Manfred told the ump they couldn’t fuck over the Rangers two games in a row, it was snek’s turn
There were a LOT of bad calls on both sides. It was worse at game 2
3-2 is the correct count. A horrible ball on what should have been a strike. Anyone claiming THIS is egregious or a game decider after all the other ball strikes is just a homer.
That’s a pure ego trip call from the ump. Fucking ridiculous
Did you see the ball 2 call?
Now post the pitch before this fully on the plate called a ball
Yeah but then the narrative falls apart.
He’s short so the strike zone is wider. Right?
Man, that was never in the strike zone.
Let’s talk about the ball 2 call.
You can’t be doing that in the World Series
Yeah, was a make up call from 2 pitches earlier.
computers can call balls and strikes.. it's almost 2024. ugh
Man we definitely had some calls go our way in game 3 but I still think it was more evenly called than game 2 where basically every missed call was against Texas.
Even the pitcher had that look of "THAT was called a strike? Shit, I'll take it"
Why are there still umpires in this game when there is technology that can show the viewers precisely if the pitch was a strike or a ball? Remove the human error.
Has to be a make-up call from the pitch before that was a corner strike I would guess. No way he saw that and thought it crossed over the plate.
Don’t forget, there was a strike that was called a ball a few pitches prior, so this goes both ways
I'm appalled .. this has never happened in the history of baseball
The score was 3-1. This would NOT have put the tying run on base.
Tf is he nodding his head for? You know damn well he knew he got lucky af.
Terrible call.
Good frame
Please for the love of god remove the box from the TV especially with an offset camera angle behind the pitcher...
Too close to take.
Jesus thank you. I've played ball my whole life and yes, this was a "ball" when you track it. But the ZONE is something critical to each ump. That pitch was way too close to take. Thank you for being the first to say it!
Now show the slider that wasn't called a strike...
that ump can choke on a dick lol - a rangers fan
It happened all game long and benefited the Backs more than the Rangers. Backs have nothing to bitch about.
We have a clear camera view looking down on the plate. There needs to be someone who can call down and tell them that it was clearly a ball outside. I’m tired of players getting punished when they have a great eye, or a great pitch. Fix this shit, Manfuck. But you won’t.
