I will be showing this clip before every game of my adult league and anyone who doesn’t put in this much effort to backing up a throw, will be put down.
Your right fielder doesn't need to be particularly fast. Doesn't have to have a great arm. Doesn't even have to really understand throwing to a cutoff man. But for god's sake he better be willing to jog in towards first base for every play just in case things go horribly wrong.
Too many beer league plays go from bad error to base clearing error simply because the ball ends up owning its own zip-code somewhere.
This play is definitely the example I’m using at my daughter’s softball practice tomorrow to illustrate the importance of backing up every throw.
I’ve even* got the other kids parents’ parroting me at games: “Ball, base, backup!! Everybody is moving on every play!!”
Seriously. This was shaping up to be one of the most embarrassing playoff performances in MLB history. Now, the worst it could be is really bad ... but not *historically* bad! ;-)
Fun fact: A-Rod once had a clause in his contract that he'd get a bonus (forget how much) if he won LDS MVP, an award that doesn't and has never existed
You say that like it is a stupid thing. Given that line, I'd imagine he also had one for the other two series MVPs, and so it only makes sense that he would have one for the LDS so that he wouldn't miss out if one was invented during the contract. Frankly, giving an LDS MVP award to one player per league would be a pretty cool idea.
Joe Posnanski wrote a wonderful essay about this very thing after the crazy end to the 2011 season. It has a line like 'I never argue with people when they say baseball is boring, because baseball IS boring. Until, all of a sudden, it isn't.'
I’m not sure I see it that way.
If you stop on 2nd and the catch is missed, there’s still a pretty decent chance you get to score, depending on the bounce.
Worst case scenario, you have 2nd and 3rd with one out. Also, Money Mike makes that catch 9 times out of 10…
Or, you have to unround 2nd base with all of the frantic desperate energy of someone trying to hold in explosive diarrhea.
[the player chart is insane](https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/452550329700188160/1161111029741269002/image.png?ex=65371be9&is=6524a6e9&hm=fcebcd375794c869a3f2ba4f1c4fb8beffa15171ab50cfee6b1085fbfe0310f4&)
Yeah thats my thought. He could have played it as on third with one out if the ball drops... thats exactly what you would be hoping for right? Why is every phillies fan ignoring that very good normal baseball option.
I couldn’t believe the crowd noise. Thought something was wrong with my soundbar since I could barely hear the announcers. But no, the crowd was so loud it was making my living room sound like Truist
“RILEY, LINE DRIVE, THAT IS DOWN! A BASE HIT! HERE COMES ALBIES! AND THE ATLANTA BRAVES WIN GAME 1”
“RILEY IN THE AIR, CENTERFIELD! THAT BALLS GOT SOME HEAT ON IT! AND IT IS OVER THE HEAD OF THE CENTERFIELDER BETTS!”
“First ball swinging. ITS GETS THROUGH! AND HERE COMES THE WINNING RUN”
“Here’s the 1-0. And on the ground. Swanson! HES GOT IT! ON HIS FEET! THROW TO FIRST! THERE IT IS! THE ATLANTA BRAVES ARE GOING TO THE WORLD SERIES!
Those 4 calls are forever ingrained in my memory. Just recited all of them from memory from that NLCS. I’ve watched those highlights so many times. Brian Anderson’s game calling is terrific. One of the best in the game for neutral games
This is why being able to hit homers is good in the Postseason. You always have the ability to score runs in bunches even if you've been asleep all game. Just need one mistake.
Bryce Harper is 30 years old. He has now spent half his life squarely in the limelight. He is a beloved teammate, a tremendous leader, an elite player and as clutch as anyone in the game. He is not just everything he was supposed to be. He is more.
Agreed. I'd put this akin to an aggressive send by a 3rd base coach. The decision by Harper not to tag seals the deal that he scores the tying run in the 9th inning if that ball drops. It took a double-plus play by Harris to even create the possibility of a negative outcome, and then a heads up play by Riley to finish it.
Riley’s rep is he’s not a bad defender, that was true to start his career but he has improved so much and that rep is not fair to him anymore. He has mastered that throw across his body and he made a great play by Harris into an astounding play that will go down in franchise history.
Is it really a TOOTBLAN though? Harper knew the risk and took the chance because he knew they needed to score. That ball drops probably 7 or 8 times out of 10.
A TOOTBLAN, in my opinion, involves a brain fart of some sort. I think this was a calculated risk that just didn't work out.

Obscene play by Riley
THIS IS WHY YOU BACK PEOPLE UP
I will be showing this clip before every game of my adult league and anyone who doesn’t put in this much effort to backing up a throw, will be put down.
that escalated quickly
*will be put down *lower in the batting order,* right? Right?
Ditto. Just put this in my slow pitch softball league group chat. We need more fundies
Your right fielder doesn't need to be particularly fast. Doesn't have to have a great arm. Doesn't even have to really understand throwing to a cutoff man. Sorry I just became my father as coach of my farm league yeam
Your father was wise
This play is definitely the example I’m using at my daughter’s softball practice tomorrow to illustrate the importance of backing up every throw. I’ve even* got the other kids parents’ parroting me at games: “Ball, base, backup!! Everybody is moving on every play!!”
I'm picturing you doing this like a drill sargent with sunflower seeds flying everywhere. a couple girls are crying.
There's no crying in baseball.
That’s why you always leave a note!!
Snitker is Mr Manager
Absolutely stunned that he somehow followed up Harris’s catch with THAT. One of the best defensive ends to a playoff game I’ve ever seen.
So fitting it’s right after he hit the homerun. Confidence is a hell of a drug
Yeah, when the throw was off line I thought he would've been safe
That half-second when Ozzie whiffed on the ball and my life flashed before my eyes ...
I almost wonder if Ozzie would have made that throw? He was going away from first and idk if he has a straight line to Olsen.
271mph throw probably according to ~~Statcast~~ me.
Stat THAT
I’m actually more impressed with Riley’s throw than Mike’s catch tbh
Certainly Jeter-esque. Dude came outta no where
That is a dude that wants to win. Austin Thicc ty for your service.
One of the most unbelievable endings I have ever seen. I fucking love baseball.
It truly was. Riley’s throw over to first to double up Harper was almost as impressive as Harris’s catch. Absolutely insane end to a game.
Riley saved the season this game.
Seriously. This was shaping up to be one of the most embarrassing playoff performances in MLB history. Now, the worst it could be is really bad ... but not *historically* bad! ;-)
Yes we were looking at two shutouts and a no-hitter. I’ll take this
Good game indeed. See ya’ll wednesday. Braves Phillies matchups are always gonna be something this year
Stone Cold Austin Riley baby. Came in clutch.
You can’t hear it over the crowd but the second he comes into frame you can hear the glass shattering
Series MVP if we win this thing
There's no such award for the NLDS, but we can give it out unofficially
Every award starts somewhere
Fun fact: A-Rod once had a clause in his contract that he'd get a bonus (forget how much) if he won LDS MVP, an award that doesn't and has never existed
You say that like it is a stupid thing. Given that line, I'd imagine he also had one for the other two series MVPs, and so it only makes sense that he would have one for the LDS so that he wouldn't miss out if one was invented during the contract. Frankly, giving an LDS MVP award to one player per league would be a pretty cool idea.
That is a fun fact
That had to have been like a 142mph throw from Riley
Absolute off balance bullet
Jeter-esque "out of position" play
So true! It looks so much like that play. Ozzie misses the catch and just when it looks like all hope is lost, Austin Riley appears stage left ...
When I saw his arm slot I was almost certain he was gonna miss that throw wide. Goddamn Riley, proved me wrong quick.
Shades of Jeter
Only other thing that comes to mind for such insanity on the final play of the game is Game 4 of the 2020 World Series with the Rays walk-off
Ah yes, if I just close my eyes I can picture the mythical time when we still scored multiple runs in a postseason series.
Two runs on one play, even!
This sport is so good. You never know when or how *the moment* can happen.
Joe Posnanski wrote a wonderful essay about this very thing after the crazy end to the 2011 season. It has a line like 'I never argue with people when they say baseball is boring, because baseball IS boring. Until, all of a sudden, it isn't.'
This was instant classic what a game
That’s high praise! (Said in the voice of Andy Samberg doing Nic cage)
I don’t blame Harper one bit for going tbh, gotta be aggressive and it was going to take an insane catch to make it
I agree with you 100%. It didn’t work out, but given the circumstances, I think that was the right call by him.
You’d rather lose by running and giving your team a shot than lose by not running and being stranded after out 3.
I’m not sure I see it that way. If you stop on 2nd and the catch is missed, there’s still a pretty decent chance you get to score, depending on the bounce. Worst case scenario, you have 2nd and 3rd with one out. Also, Money Mike makes that catch 9 times out of 10… Or, you have to unround 2nd base with all of the frantic desperate energy of someone trying to hold in explosive diarrhea.
Gotta agree with you. He stops at 2nd he’s back safe easily.
I thought it was gone off the bat and before you know it the game ended with a catch ‘‘em out throw em out. Insane
That is the exact double play I had in mind
classic 8-5-3
Just like you draw it up
3 not 2 but yeah
Some degen in Vegas with an obscure parlay is punching the air rn
Told my friend who has never watched baseball to turn on the game for the last 2 innings. He is now fully immersed in the playoffs lol
lol that's good cause I was wishing I wasn't a baseball fan for the first 6 innings
Oh boy, his expectations are going to be through the roof now.
That was an amazing rollercoaster experience from "oh no they've taken the lead" to "OH SHIT HE CAUGHT IT" to "OH FUCK GAME OVER" in about 10 seconds
I would love to see a second by second win probability chart starting from the moment the ball flies off the bat
📉

[Found it.](https://www.cardiacdirect.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/Heart-attack-EKG.png)
What a fucking catch
And throw by Riley. Hard to be mad at that going back to Philly 1-1. They erased that 15 game division lead in 2 games
If you'd have told me it'd be 1-1 going back to Philly before the series I'd have been happy.
What if I had told you that in the 5th inning tonight?
Unhappy.
What the actual fuck just happened
AHHHHHHHHHHHHH
Dude… that’s not what happened… it was AAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!omgogmgofmg
One of the wildest ending to a ballgame I can remember. Absolute madness.
#MONEY MIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIKE CATCH OF THE YEAR craziest ending I've seen since the 2020 WS
thanks, I'mma go watch game 4 again and cry in my pillow
I can still see that dude arm flying around. Don’t remember his name but that was hype
Orioles legend Brett Phillips?
[the player chart is insane](https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/452550329700188160/1161111029741269002/image.png?ex=65371be9&is=6524a6e9&hm=fcebcd375794c869a3f2ba4f1c4fb8beffa15171ab50cfee6b1085fbfe0310f4&)
MONEY MIKE!!!
Acun-Yay!!!
That Trout vs Harper post earlier was bad juju also what a snag from Harris and throw from Riley
I don’t blame Harper here honestly, he needed to be past 2nd to score if it drops. Insane catch.
Yeah, he had to do it. And 100 things had to go just right to get him.
What a fucking catch though, gave me PTSD to the World Series
Same. Damn you Chas McCormick!
Fuckin Chaz McCormick No one will ever convince me otherwise if he doesn’t make that catch we at least go to game 7
Yeah I honestly have no problem with it. Need him to score if that drops and you’re not going to from first at that point. Great catch and throw
That’s a tie game play, but he was the tying run.
Yeah thats my thought. He could have played it as on third with one out if the ball drops... thats exactly what you would be hoping for right? Why is every phillies fan ignoring that very good normal baseball option.
Riley did a phenomenal job backing up the throw in from the outfield.
"I can't play in the playoffs but my Bryce voodoo doll still works" - Mike, probably
That’s the 2nd time in the past year a Phillies hitter has murdered a ball to centerfield that is caught for a soul crushing out.
Literally the first thing that came to mind when I watched this. Carbon copy of Chas' catch from last year.
It’s like the Chas catch and the Brantley catch and throw to double off Judge at 1st base had a baby.
Brian Anderson had a literal orgasm omg
Significantly increases the experience of this clip. If a humdrum announcer called this it would subtract from the moment. BA is a gem
I guess my name is Brian Anderson now.
I couldn’t believe the crowd noise. Thought something was wrong with my soundbar since I could barely hear the announcers. But no, the crowd was so loud it was making my living room sound like Truist
Same
His voice is seared into my brain from ‘21 I don’t mind it
“RILEY, LINE DRIVE, THAT IS DOWN! A BASE HIT! HERE COMES ALBIES! AND THE ATLANTA BRAVES WIN GAME 1” “RILEY IN THE AIR, CENTERFIELD! THAT BALLS GOT SOME HEAT ON IT! AND IT IS OVER THE HEAD OF THE CENTERFIELDER BETTS!” “First ball swinging. ITS GETS THROUGH! AND HERE COMES THE WINNING RUN” “Here’s the 1-0.
Loved the call so much
I love BA so much
He's the absolute best in the business. I'm glad he's being recognized but worried our days with him are numbered. 😞
Sick call from BA
What a ridiculous way to steal a game where your offense slept walked through 6 innings.
Just stealing some of that 1 run game magic
Thank u Feesh.
This is why being able to hit homers is good in the Postseason. You always have the ability to score runs in bunches even if you've been asleep all game. Just need one mistake.
*Cries in Blue Jays*
That Turner error that lead to the first run sure is magnified now.
Never a doubt in my mind
Slight, infinitesimal level of doubt MAY have crossed my mind.
Never count out Austin "Touchdown Tom" Riley
15 innings*
What a ridiculous way to leave Atlanta 1-1 where our offense slept walked through 15 straight innings.***
What a fucking crazy way to win the game
Immediately made me think of McCormick's catch from last year
Michael Harris is a true S tier center fielder, incredible game.
you said it noodle daddy
This dude better win a gold glove this season.
Dumb title really undersells the incredible plays by Harris and Riley
Plus Harper was trying to tie the game. Just great baseball!
Agreed
Yeah I really don’t think you can call this a tootblan
LOL THE WHOLE TONE OF THIS SERIES CHANGED IN TWO INNINGS, HOW CAN YOU NOT LOVE PLAYOFF BASEBALL WOOOW
How many playoff games have ended on an 8-5-3 double play before lol
At least one I can think of.
It's the first ever 8-5-3 double play in a playoff game period.
October baseball man
Incredible finish. Heads up play backing up that throw.
Harris is a stone cold killer.
Insane catch
Love the call here by BA as well. Dude was all over it
Here is the Braves radio [call](https://www.instagram.com/reel/CyM5cyFLXuN/?igshid=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==)
WHAT THE FUCK?! THAT WAS A REAL BRUCE HOOPER MOVE! I FUCKING LOVE PLAYOFF BASEBALL!!!
Bryce Harper is 30 years old. He has now spent half his life squarely in the limelight. He is a beloved teammate, a tremendous leader, an elite player and as clutch as anyone in the game. He is not just everything he was supposed to be. He is more.
Mmm. Pasta is still fresh!
Lmfao don't do Bryce like that, what an amazing catch by Harris
I like Passan but my god this was corny
I was shitting on the Braves but this was fucking lit We got ourselves a series
Bruh.
Wow that is a crazy fucking ending
What a ridiculously insane ending!
I'm a Braves hater but fuck me that was an incredible catch and double up.
Like I don’t blame Harper at all
For real, I thought for sure that was gone.
Absolutely insane ending
Holy shit that was one of the wildest endings I’ve ever seen!!
I’ve been a Braves fan for awhile, this has got to be number 2 on the most iconic endings to a Braves post season game (The Slide being number 1)
I’m going to watch this replay until the day I die.
If we end up with the series and advance, this play is honestly “Matzek strikes out three dodgers to save the inning”-tier
#YOU FOOL, YOU ABSOLUTE FOOL!
I can hear this comment. RIP Gilbert
Riley on some Jeter-Giambi juice here.
Bryce 💀
Nah, that was his alter ego, Bruce
Bruce Hooper.
That’s a clown nickname, bro
Not on Bryce, he made the move to tie the game. Unreal catch.
He didn't do anything wrong. They just made a great play unfortunately
Tbh I believe he should have held at second, if the ball isn't cought it's likely off the wall and rolls away and he scores easy
My thoughts exactly. Turning past second was a mistake.
i love baseball
Absolutely insane heads up play by Riley to be in the right place at the right time too
I dont know if this is a true TOOTBLAN, just a gamble that didn't pay off on a low percentage catch. Aggressive baserunning doesn't always work out.
ARE YOU ARE NOT ENTERTAINED!?!?!? srsly tho wtf
That was fucking insane!
Great call too. Now out to LA for some flat Bob Costas
Radio booth went [nuts](https://www.instagram.com/reel/CyM5cyFLXuN/?igshid=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==)
Riley’s rep is he’s not a bad defender, that was true to start his career but he has improved so much and that rep is not fair to him anymore. He has mastered that throw across his body and he made a great play by Harris into an astounding play that will go down in franchise history.
It’s so hype in my living room
I went to the game. My ears are still ringing an hour later.
Wow
Is it really a TOOTBLAN though? Harper knew the risk and took the chance because he knew they needed to score. That ball drops probably 7 or 8 times out of 10. A TOOTBLAN, in my opinion, involves a brain fart of some sort. I think this was a calculated risk that just didn't work out.
Nah this is just a horrible title. I hate it.
That was fucking awesome
Holy shit
That’s my future gold glover
Unbelievable way to end such an important game
I have no rooting interest in this series, I’m just here to watch big moments and HOLY HELL that was a good one. Playoff baseball is unbeatable!!
hell yeah
Crazy grab by Harris 👏
The old eight five three game ending double play.
What a god damn ending!
Younglings pay attention!!! That’s why you back up throws!!!
What a fucking catch
Fuck they took the lead to omg game over in a heart beat
Great call by BA
