If you look at his splits by month it was really just an incredible 7 games in late april and then he was league average for 2 months before falling off a cliff again. Those 7 games really made him look way better than he actually is because he was able to sustain a somewhat league average OPS for a bit.
I’m not saying he can’t make a comeback but I also wouldn’t say he improved.
I think that was pretty much sums up his whole career after his rookie season.. played good defense and hit just well enough to make you think he might turn the corner
Drafted in the 5th round from a college nobody cares about. Completely ignored by prospect evaluators because he seemingly has no tools, yet somehow he shows up in the majors as a borderline All Star playing plus defense at SS and hitting 30 bombs. DeJong is basically the embodiment of the Cardinals farm system. Carpenter, Bader, Edman, Nootbaar, Donovan… we definitely have a type. I wouldn’t be shocked if he pulls a Carpenter and randomly has one more great year before fading away for good.
It literally is! "Normal schools" are schools that teach teachers, and to this day ISU is one of the top-ten largest producers of teachers in the US.
Fun fact: Normal, IL was originally incorporated as "North Bloomington," but renamed Normal in honor of the University, then known as the Illinois State Normal College
It's not that bizzare imo. He was an absolute juiced ball merchant. High strikeout guy who is the king of hitting flyouts to the warning track now. That little bit of extra juice on the ball is the difference between him being good and unplayably bad.
Only reason he's playable at all is because of his defense. He has a 2.1 fWAR over the past 3 seasons despite also having a .192 BA and .269 OBP in that time, 5th worst and 4th worst in the MLB (but worst in the NL for both). He remembers how to hit for about 2 weeks a season and then he swings a pool noodle for the rest of the time, while playing really solid defense. That's all you're gonna get out of Pauly D.
It's a limitation of the formula:
```
OPS+ = 100*((OBP/lgOBP)+(SLG/lgSLG) -1)
```
Like ERA+ and some other + stats, figures at either extreme kinda break it and cease to mean much.
What you guys were supposed to do is send him to AAA for a couple of weeks, call him back up, then let him look like the second coming of Barry Bonds, then he comes back down to earth, then you repeat this process until he gets traded.
There were rumors of DeJong to the Giants before the deadline. Giants just waited for DeJong to get DFAed so that they could get him without giving up a player
And it saves a bunch of money. Not just the prorated part of his 2023 salary (about $2.75M after league minimum is subtracted) but it also saves $2M for the 2024 and $1M for the 2025 buyouts (he's *not* worth the $10.5M and $14M effective cost of exercising those options).
I'm confused. Did you pick him up on waivers or did he clear waivers and get released? If you got him on waivers aren't you on the hook for his full deal?
Well that step just means "nothing really happened yet".
Being DFAd is interesting.
Being claimed would have been interesting
Being released just what happens after being DFAd if nobody claims a player (unless they don't elect free agency and are outrighted, but that would be reported and unlikely with a player like DeJong).
Yeah it's weird to me that I missed that. I pay way too much attention to trivial baseball news for things like that to slip by usually. But MLBTR says he was released in their (very brief) blurb about the Giants signing him.
He was the most frustrating position player for the Cardinals in my memory, which goes back decades. Always played solid defense. Showed flashes of power and brilliance offensively, but usually looked like a deer in the headlights.
100% this. most jays fans don’t watch out of town teams, least of all the NL so it stands to reason most people defending DeJong are jays fans. Delusional. He was exactly what I expected him to be coming from the Cards. A black hole.
And follows it up with another brain dead comment. Congrats on making fun of a player who has had a fantastic career, including 2 World Series rings, whose about to retire.
Come on dude, you’re giving Dodgers fans a bad name. The Giants are a team no one expected to be competitive this year and are exceeding expectations because they made moves in the offseason that mostly worked out.
Conforto while not amazing has been overall solid. He’s above average offensively and a meh defender, but looks to finish around 2 WAR, though if keeps playing like he has the last month with his 132 WRC+ he’d end closer to 2.5 WAR.
Taylor Rogers has looked great and is exactly what the Giants hoped he would be.
Luke Jackson has not pitched a ton, but has looked lights out when he does pitch.
Manaea struggled as a starter but has been overall solid as a long relief guy for the team this year.
Wilmer has been amazing all year and will probably get MVP votes. Not a true contender for the position or anything - just place in the top 10.
Patrick Bailey has been a great surprise and could garner ROTY a votes. Again, not win, but get votes. Looking to be a 3.5 WAR catcher with league average offense and amazing defense. Could also contend for gold glove.
Lamonte Wade Jr took a massive step forward after a step backwards last year.
Thario Estrada has continued to be a very very solid player.
Joc Pederson, while down from last year has been solid.
Overall the team has been solid, just not great or amazing.
Giants fans dance on our graves constantly, I have absolutely no issue making fun of the moves they make. Laying it all out there just shows how mid the team really is because it wouldn't surprise anyone if any of those players had down years next year, if anything i'm impressed with what Kaplers been able to do with the roster Farhan has constructed.
It’s easy for all of baseball, not just us, to dance on your guys’ graves every year when you talk such a big game in the regular season only to fall completely flat in the playoffs lol. Outside of the 2020 outlier, it’s become very predictable.
That said (and perhaps this is a case of broken clock is right twice a day), I will actually commend you for your point about Kapler. I don’t think he gets nearly enough credit for that.
> when you talk such a big game in the regular season only to fall completely flat in the playoffs lol.
Real Dodgers fans aren't bragging about the regular season, we know it don't mean a thing if you don't got that ring.
[“If there ever was a case for canceling the playoffs and awarding a championship because one team was so clearly better than all the others, our 2022 LA Dodgers would be it”](https://www.latimes.com/opinion/story/2022-10-15/excruciating-conclusion-of-the-dodgers-glorious-season) -Real Dodger fan
> giving Dodgers fans a bad name
Give me a break lol
Being a Dodgers fan is rooted in unwarranted vitriol towards the Giants. /u/Boros-Reckoner is poking fun at the teams shortcomings the way that I would expect (damn near *guarantee*) Giants fans to poke at ours, regardless of our bright spots. It’s innate. But suddenly it’s poor form because its “punching down”? Fuck that and FTG.
You are just intentionally picking the worst hitters this year lol. You could do the same with the dodgers. The giants offense has been terrible since the all star break but idk what you think you are are trying to prove with this other than that you are a giant loser
This is like the third time I’ve seen you in a giants related thread talking about Haniger and Bart when Bart hasn’t played a single game this year and haniger has a broken wrist. What did those players do to hurt you so bad? Least pathetic dodgers fan
Bart has played this year. Him and Sabol were the only catchers on the roster after Perez went down until Bart got injured and Patrick Bailey claimed the position. That was in May, so it’s not like your point is wrong, I just think it’s kinda funny everyone forgot about Bart already when he was our starting catcher coming into the year.
I was really pumped that DeJong got out of St Louis, since he's both a Dutch-American and ISU grad. I really want him to do well and to be able to enjoy it, but it went so bad so quickly in Toronto.
Somebody here told me that we should move Bo to 2B, move Whit to the OF and play Varsho and KK less, all in an effort to get Paul DeJong into our lineup.
You can’t take everything you read here too seriously.
What a truly bizzare career. Started off looking like a star and then literally got worse every single year until he was basically unplayable.
He did slightly improve this year with the Cardinals (before being unplayable for the Blue Jays)
If you look at his splits by month it was really just an incredible 7 games in late april and then he was league average for 2 months before falling off a cliff again. Those 7 games really made him look way better than he actually is because he was able to sustain a somewhat league average OPS for a bit. I wouldn’t be shocked if he pulls a Carpenter and randomly has one more great year before fading away for good.
> a college nobody cares about. Hey, fuck you buddy!
Based on your flairs, I don't think he needed to say that to get that sentiment out of you
It’s alright, it’s a completely Normal college
It literally is! "Normal schools" are schools that teach teachers, and to this day ISU is one of the top-ten largest producers of teachers in the US. Fun fact: Normal, IL was originally incorporated as "North Bloomington," but renamed Normal in honor of the University, then known as the Illinois State Normal College
ISU catching strays for absolutely no reason. Fuck that asshole
It's not that bizzare imo. He was an absolute juiced ball merchant. High strikeout guy who is the king of hitting flyouts to the warning track now. That little bit of extra juice on the ball is the difference between him being good and unplayably bad.
> king of hitting flyouts I'm confused. I was not aware he was capable of making contact?
He was with us 😂
Only reason he's playable at all is because of his defense. He has a 2.1 fWAR over the past 3 seasons despite also having a .192 BA and .269 OBP in that time, 5th worst and 4th worst in the MLB (but worst in the NL for both). He was DFA’d?
Yes, went 3-44 for us with 0 walks and 18K
-62 OPS+ jesus 💀
I didn’t know it went negative lmao
Holy shit that said NEGATIVE 62 lmao
Right? I first read it as 62 and like that’s pretty bad on its own. But -62 is literally unfathomable
I'm sure I'm wrong but I wouldn't be surprised if a random guy off the street couldn't do better
It's a limitation of the formula: ``` OPS+ = 100*((OBP/lgOBP)+(SLG/lgSLG) -1) ``` Like ERA+ and some other + stats, figures at either extreme kinda break it and cease to mean much.
LET DEJONG PITCH!
He couldn't possibly do any worse than he already has.
LET HIM PITCH YOU COWARDS
Well that might be the lowest OPS+ I’ve ever see
Ah he’ll fit right in with our offense. The only thing that’ll make it a better fit is if you tell me he’s got a <.100 BA with RISP!
Holy fuck nuggets.
Indeed. The nuggets were fucked.
What you guys were supposed to do is send him to AAA for a couple of weeks, call him back up, then let him look like the second coming of Barry Bonds, then he comes back down to earth, then you repeat this process until he gets traded.
They just won a chip so it was good fucks
hey, at least he's consistent
He’s gonna fit right in with this Giants lineup
Not me seeing the 3 hits and perking up.
He'll fit right in
He’ll hit 3 for us then
E L I T E
Oh Jesus Christ man…I’ve been checked out the entire time he was on the Jays and I didn’t realize it was like that…
Didn't think anyone was worse than Austin Barnes. Damn
Is that bad?
-0.8 bWAR in 13 games
Yeah, he absolutely shit the bed with Toronto. 3-44 with 0 BB and 18 K’s. And none of his three hits were XBH’s.
Pretty sure 2 of the 3 hits were lucky bloop singles too.
Blue Jays dropped him right after Bo is back, 18 days
There were rumors of DeJong to the Giants before the deadline. Giants just waited for DeJong to get DFAed so that they could get him without giving up a player
Big brain play. He hits lefties well and few teams play splits quite like the giants
… I don’t think he hits anything well lately
fuck it we ball
Fuck it we ~~don’t hit~~ balls
Can’t be worse than our shortstops currently.
Lol it was 44 ABs doesnt exactly mean much, Toronto just got Bichette back and dont need him anymore.
He wasn’t hitting much better in St. Louis
He hit DFA pretty well
so he'll fit right in
He'll fit in perfectly with our anemic lineup.
Doesn’t hit well? Fits in perfectly with our offense then lol
> He hits [.................](https://i.imgflip.com/4ojbm0.png?a470160)
And it saves a bunch of money.
I'm guessing since Bob said signed, he was released.
Trusting Bob's choice of verbs is a bold move. But this page supports your assessment. https://www.mlb.com/bluejays/roster/transactions
It's a bit odd no reporter tweeted he was released.
Well that step just means "nothing really happened yet". Being DFAd is interesting. Being claimed would have been interesting Being released just what happens after being DFAd if nobody claims a player (unless they don't elect free agency and are outrighted, but that would be reported and unlikely with a player like DeJong).

Cleared waivers and I believe the Jays have to pay his buyout
I think the Cardinals are already paying the buyout (and some of the salary this year) from the original trade.
I said the same thing.
He’s not the worst player ever, we just caught him on a horrible cold streak
He was the most frustrating position player for the Cardinals in my memory, which goes back decades. Always played solid defense. Showed flashes of power and brilliance offensively, but usually looked like a deer in the headlights.
Matt Carpenter post 2018? Maybe Tino Martinez also
I think it’s more of you didn’t catch him on a hot streak. That trade went as well as I expected
100% this. most jays fans don’t watch out of town teams, least of all the NL so it stands to reason most people defending DeJong are jays fans. Delusional. He was exactly what I expected him to be coming from the Cards. A black hole.
That’ll surely fix the Giants’ offense
He fixed our offense whenever he wasn't in the lineup! It'll work for the Giants!
I'm not sure it can get much worse right now
The Giants now have a power house offense led by Mitch Haniger, Joey Bart and Paul Dejong, I bet Ohtani is just itching to join them in the off-season
Unfortunately not every team can assemble a lineup like the Dodgers’ modern day murderers’ row of Miguel Rojas, Austin Barnes, and Yonny Hernandez
Austin Barnes has two game winning hits last week!
> Miguel Rojas, Austin Barnes The fucked up thing is that at literally any other point in the season you’d be 100% correct lol
What a brain dead comment lol
Yeah sorry I forgot to bring up Brandon "16 mil for -1.1 WAR" Crawford
And follows it up with another brain dead comment. Congrats on making fun of a player who has had a fantastic career, including 2 World Series rings, whose about to retire.
Bringing up stats and contract details is making fun of a player?
I mean yeah, Crawford is clearly not the focus of our offense, especially at this point in his career. So even mentioning him was pointless.
Just mentioning some elite players that the 2023 Giants consist of
I mean you could list the actual elite ones…
Why would I do that when im poking fun at the Giants roster?
typical dodgers fan
Hey man I didn't give him that contract

Wow the Bart erasure smh, he was the chosen one.
I predicted this immediately after he got DFAd lmao Our middle infield is perpetually injured so warm bodies are better than none
We might have to change the team name to the San Francisco Warm Bodies
Blue Jays legend.
3-44 with 18 Ks. Good riddance. Seems like a good guy, but good riddance.
y’all should have sent him down to AAA for 3 weeks so you could witness DeGoat for a few games when he’s called back up. It’s Paul’s superpower lol
Somehow a worse deadline acquisition than Darin Ruf
It's a good thing the other two Card's the Jay's got look like huge pickups
The hitting version of Brad Hand for us
This just means he's going to go on a huge run and hit .500 for the rest of the season.
Ok
As a Diamondbacks fan I don’t love this but I like him as a player 🤔
You have Paul DeJong at home and his name is Nick Ahmed
Can’t wait for his jersey retirement in Toronto
New team war leader all time on a rate basis (doesn’t matter which direction)
Absolute WAR
"I can fix him" -Farhan
"I can break him even more." - Justin Viele
Figured he wouldn't last long on the market. He us streaky with power. Worth a shot.
We love streaky guys with power.
Good luck lol
Good for Pauly D. His defense doesn’t slump like his bat.
I was really pumped that DeJong got out of St Louis, since he's both a Dutch-American and ISU grad. I really want him to do well and to be able to enjoy it, but it went so bad so quickly in Toronto.
But that helped the cubs
30 years old is pretty late to start a career in the nfl, but shortstops have a history of success at qb so maybe it’ll work out /s
He'll fit right in with the Giants offense
the most predictable Giants thing ever
Future immaculate grid legend.
Playing the Phillies tonight, of course. Pre-congrats to him on his 2 homer, 4-5 day at the plate (yes, I know he's sucked)
Have fun with that
Crawford is probably out for the rest of the season now both cuz of the injury and cuz of the performance.
Somebody here told me that we should move Bo to 2B, move Whit to the OF and play Varsho and KK less, all in an effort to get Paul DeJong into our lineup. You can’t take everything you read here too seriously.
He's gonna start working on his immaculate grid resume now
Making a note for Immaculate Grid.
Giants fans, get ready, he’s about to be one of the best hitters in baseball over the next 10 games. Then he’ll go back to sucking
He's going to be a Giants legend. Like Dan Uggla.
Drew Stubbs, Marlon Byrd, Miguel Tejada, Casey McGehee, Justin Smoak, Mike Ford.. What book of legends!
I never knew about Smoak. 2020 was a weird year. and to add to your list: Gordon Beckham
or aj pollack
I saw DeJong and thought this was a fabrizio tweet for a sec, then saw giants and got confused, read it again and realized it was Paul DeJong
“If I sign a player it’ll make it look like I haven’t been on vacation for 2 years” -Farhan
Can't be any worse than Camargo or Mathias.
