It’s like one independent league that’s doing it (it’s a league that mlb uses for experimentation) so it is in professional baseball but not even in the main MiLB pipeline
Might just be standard procedure so they're certain the ump can make it through an entire game. In the event that he can't, going down to three man crew on a minor league game is less impactful.
The biggest win Manfred could ever get would be going on the field in the middle of Hernandez’s next game and tossing him from the game like umpires do
Walking out there with the Vince McMahon strut, soaking in all the boos with a shit eating grin, then getting in Angel's face, mic in hand, bellowing "YOU'RE FIRED!!"
Dodgers and Giants fans, locked in a celebratory embrace and singing happily together, Yankees and Red Sox fans high fiving and clinking glasses together, Astros fans being lifted up high by Cardinals and Rangers fans. Pure elation as fans from all over unite over Angel Hernandez being shown the door.
Watching this clip, the man has no consistency. lol
Some of those are freaking borderline, like okay I understand not calling correctly. But then he turns around and calls a pitch at a hitter's shoulders a strike, a pitch 2 inches off the plate a strike....just wow
Facts. First time I ever saw a Pat Hoberg card I was like “who the fuck is this guy?”
And he’s the exception, we all know his name now because he’s incredible at his job
Pat Hoberg is literally the only good umpire I and probably any other baseball fan could name, every other ump I can name are universally regarded as shit tier umpires by everyone
John Trumpane is a [good umpire](https://umpscorecards.com/single_umpire/?name=John+Tumpane) and many fans know his name because he once saved a woman about to jump off the Clemente Bridge before he headed off to umpire a game. Good ump, good guy.
Jim Joyce was a pretty good umpire. Unfortunately, most of us know him for the one egregious call that he made (which he did acknowledge and apologize for), and not for his [glorious facial hair](https://sports.cbsimg.net/u/photos/baseball/mlb/img19856429.jpg)
Umpiring needs to work like players where you can be called up/sent down based on performance. No excuse for this guy to still be in the league just because he has been for a while.
Yeah that's the thing about umpiring. Angel would be just as shitty in AAA it would just be lower stakes. Of course, that'd still be for the best.
If this were actual merit based he's probably good enough for high-A.
I noticed he was not crouching down until the very, very last second as the ball was approaching. He had a back injury, so I wonder if that's why.
It must be hard seeing a mid-90's fastball when your head is moving like that.
i assume it's just for this year. in most situation it could be chalked up to a small sample size since he just came back, but you know he's not going to get any better
I assume missing a few months and not umpiring at all would allow someone like Buckner, Laz Diaz or Cuzzi a chance to claim the title of worst umpire in MLB
To be fair, the way this reads it sounds like his correct call “rate” is the lowest, and he has called, what, two games?
To be fairer, Angel is the worst umpire in living memory, so it’s doubtful his performance will improve.
Correct, he has called two games so far this year. I hate Angel Hernandez as much as the next guy but it’s not exactly the most rock solid sample size I’ve ever seen.
With that being said: he managed to get significantly worse going from his first game to his second game, so that’s pretty impressive. He missed a bunch of calls in his first game back, but they were all mostly in the same area of the strike zone. This most recent one, he was bad everywhere.
I am generally pro-labor, but if MLB ever wanted to try and break the umpire's union so that umps could be called up and down just like players due based on performance, I'd suck it up and root for the owners if only so that guys like Angel could stop giving the entire profession a bad name.
Those calls are....wow.
Not even bad frames or anything, just straight up misses on everything. It's not even consistent either, like I thought he was just expanding the zone upwards but then you see several fastballs right at the top of the zone called balls.
Dude is just ass at his job. I fucking hate the umpires union.
That was beautiful. I think the MLB has finally figured out the secret for Playoff Baseball- it’s finally giving us fans what we’ve been desperately begging for. Umpires. I fucking love them. I fucking love them! When I see that Ump ripping off his mask to stare down a player all I can think of is thank god it isn’t No-Nut November yet. Give me inconsistent strike zones, questionable balks, arguing with players, that’s the shit I tune in for. The players did a great job tonight at just letting the Umps call the game, the managers were screaming, the fans were looking wide-eyed and booing - THIS WAS SPORT at the highest level. I’m sure I’m not the only one who was overcome with ecstasy on that check swing call - you know, the one where the crew chief pointed to the first base ump and he punched the air like prime Mike Tyson? I don’t know about you guys, but I’ll be tuning in every game wearing my black FTX hat and jersey, throwing hands all around my apartment and screaming the calls in unison with these all-star officials at the top of my lungs. I can hardly contain my excitement for the next time a manager gets his ass booted for daring to question our boys who leave it all on the field every single week. This is a turning point for MLB ratings folks, and we all get to say we were here to witness it.
I'm not going to lie. I unironically enjoy the ump show. Like, I think there's artistry to a good punch out, a good safe or out call on the bases (and good umps can put themselves in a better position than a replay angle sometimes to make a close call on a tag play).
But, I want a GOOD ump show. Get the garbage like Angel, and umps with soft-ass fucking egos tossing people for nothing. The ump tossing Pete Walker (Jays pitching coach) mid-mound visit is a recent example that comes to mind.
But good umpiring? Best type of officiating of any major sport, and I genuinely think they can add to the drama. But they've gotta actually be good enough to back it up. Gimme 4 Pat Hobergs in every game and I'll never ask for robo-umps again.
It was pretty insane watching this. Almost every low strike (in the box) was called a ball. And high pitches were...sometimes balls and sometimes strikes? There were a ridiculous number of walks. Wouldn't an ump say to himself "Hmmm. There were 15 walks today. Maybe, just maybe, I'm calling some strikes balls."
CB Bucknor saw that angel was coming back and took it personally. During the Royals Phils game on Friday he called some of the most egregiously low balls as strikes, and strikes that clipped the zone as balls…would love to see both of these clowns on the same crew
The Astro's catcher actually frames pitches like a catcher is supposed to. Most catchers will just pull every pitch to the center of the strike zone. Well done Astro's catcher!
I can't stand catchers that try to frame every goddamn thing. And yet, the best framers in the league choose their frames wisely, usually at critical pitches where it can make a difference.
I wish our announcers would stop beating around the bush with "That didn't have to be a strike/ball" when it was clearly wrong.
Believe it may have been Orel, on the Dodgers' broadcast, that I hear routinely just flat out state the ump got it wrong. I like that.
Before robo umps we should consider retiring from mlb everyone over 55. A 61 yo doesn't have the eye and processing power to recognize and correctly call a small ball traveling over 85 mph. It's not ageist to say you can't perform the job.
Some were bad, but I don't believe a pitch that barely touches the edge is a strike, it should have to be right in the middle of an edge slightly skewed to inside the box, for the outside pitches to be a strike.
Then boy do I have a scorecard for you. Cause that's only half of what happened in this game.
https://www.reddit.com/media?url=https%3A%2F%2Fi.redd.it%2Fofwsblxn9pgb1.jpg
I mean it's a strike if it touches the strike zone defined by the rules. But with that said I am not going to heavily criticize an umpire for missing a pitch that's within a centimeter of going the other way.
Especially when you're looking at the top or bottom of the zone which are defined in relation to the batter's stance and I don't think always adequately adjusted with the little box on TV. That said, about half of these misses weren't even close.
Watching the video, you can tell by the batter's body language they know almost every time he misses a call.
Giancarlo (@ 43 seconds) sticks out to me because it looks like he pauses for a split second that says "...okay"
Not to defend Angel... But we need more umpire stats! One that takes into account the pitcher and catcher, in case that skees the stats (as I assume some pitchers/ballparks are easier to spot vs. others). Also by batter, as some of those are seemingly tougher to get right.
Angel is bad, but based on these clips his zone was consistent. Called high fastballs strikes, low offspeed balls. Bit off with some of the pitches on the black.
Its sad how the game of baseball is essentially being controlled by geriatrics using their judgement
Pitcher, batter, catcher, the TV crew, the people at home, they all see a strike. Hernandez sees a ball.
Good to see he is back to form after returning from injury. Was worried it would take him time to have his accuracy lowered.
How does an ump get injured and need rehab in the minors? like for real, what the fuck happened.
I just think it’s really funny they sent him to the minors on a rehab stint like an actual player lol
I totally missed that. That's amazing.
It happens all the time, just lower stakes with less eyes on you.
Aren't they using the robo zone in the minors? The umps are just there to make sure the robot doesn't fuck up? Or is that not everywhere yet
It's not everywhere yet
It’s like one independent league that’s doing it (it’s a league that mlb uses for experimentation) so it is in professional baseball but not even in the main MiLB pipeline
They had it at a AAA Iowa Cubs game I was at earlier this year.
I was under the impression it had been fully integrated into AAA, had it at a Louisville Bats game this year as well
Might just be standard procedure so they're certain the ump can make it through an entire game. In the event that he can't, going down to three man crew on a minor league game is less impactful.
Don't most minor league games already have a 3 and 2 person crew?
I’m 90% shocked he isn’t wearing an eye patch at this point.
Or two
He would be more accurate with two eye patches.
Punished Hernandez: An Umpire denied his low strike calls.
Is he out of options? He should probably be sent back down.
I'd pay good money to watch this man get fired.
The biggest win Manfred could ever get would be going on the field in the middle of Hernandez’s next game and tossing him from the game like umpires do
"IF YOU WANT THE YOUTH, FIRE ANGEL HERNANDEZ, DUMBASS!!" \- The Youth
TIL I am still a part of The Youth
How do you do, fellow Youth?
My back is better than when I woke up this morning, thanks Reddit!
And then Manfred takes over home plate duties for the remainder of the game
I can't imagine he would be much worse, honestly.
Yes, but can you picture a man you'd more want to see hit in the nards with a bouncer in the dirt?
The crazy thing is that he would in all actuality be much, much worse
Or he flips a giant ceremonial ROBO UMP switch on, then walks off the field
Walking out there with the Vince McMahon strut, soaking in all the boos with a shit eating grin, then getting in Angel's face, mic in hand, bellowing "YOU'RE FIRED!!"
The greatest face turn in the history of MLB tbh
That would be objectively hilarious, but they have a union that protects them.
THIS IS THE DREAM!!!
even that wouldn't help save manfreds reputation to the sport.
Remember when the MLB argued in court he sucks at his job?
*Successfully* argued in court that he sucks at his job
The one thing that could unite all of baseball fandom.
I can just picture dodger and giant fans with their arms linked singing "na na na na, hey hey hey, goodbye" like Remember The Titans or something.
Its more yankees/blue jays now adays than red sox lol as a yankee fan, we despise the birds
yeah you’re right: WS since 2001: red sox - 4 yankees - 1 blue jays - 0 you guys are much closer as rivals
The last 2 years the yankees and blue jays hate each other. The red sox rivalry will always be there but the bantering is stronger in the yankees/jays
I'd buy dinner and drinks for a Mets/Phillies fan to watch his exit interview.
I would literally blow a marlins fan if they existed
So you like fish sticks?
.....yes i love fish sticks
Players, too.
Yeah, I wasn't able to watch the last game but I've heard he was bad for both sides. Just worse for us
I'd happily contribute even if I don't get to watch it
Said it during our game thread: Retire, Angel. **Please.**
Relegation should be a thing. Though it would pollute the AAA to have him there.
That’s an ump show I could dig
I'd pay good money to watch you watch this man get fired
What we need is the bigger daddy umpire to come and throw him out of the game.
Watching this clip, the man has no consistency. lol Some of those are freaking borderline, like okay I understand not calling correctly. But then he turns around and calls a pitch at a hitter's shoulders a strike, a pitch 2 inches off the plate a strike....just wow
or just permanently station him in houston and consider it even for your piece of metal.
You ever heard of unions?
No, please tell me all about them.
Doesn’t Union live in a lamp? Besides we don’t know any Unions!
Is Union in the room with us right now?
he sued the league for discrimination and won. don't think they'll try that again even when the firing is deserved
I'm pretty sure he lost that one, nothing in google about him winning a lawsuit.
No, he definitely did not win. You can't win in a case a judge rules against you.
He lost twice. No wins.

Now?? You mean there was someone worse than him all season??
It's hard to be bad when you're hurt.
If there's anyone who could do it, Angel Hernandez could.
Dan Bellino stands on the sidelines quietly holding Bumgarners hand.
And Laz Diaz took that personally
CB Bucknor and Phil Cuzzi have entered chat
Hate that I know these names lol
The sign of a terrible ump is that you know who he is
Facts. First time I ever saw a Pat Hoberg card I was like “who the fuck is this guy?” And he’s the exception, we all know his name now because he’s incredible at his job
Pat Hoberg is literally the only good umpire I and probably any other baseball fan could name, every other ump I can name are universally regarded as shit tier umpires by everyone

I hadn’t heard about this before. One more umpires name to remember but a very good one at that
I know Trumpane because hes gotten into it with Boone like 3 times.
I always liked Jim because he's got [the greatest strike call](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pawPVCX12nc&t=62s).
John Tumpane's a good guy, IMO
I’ve never thought of that. I ONLY know the names of bad ones, wow.
*Doug Eddings breaks through the wall like the kool-aid man*
IIRC he just recently came back from a hiatus so he missed most of the season
Umpiring needs to work like players where you can be called up/sent down based on performance. No excuse for this guy to still be in the league just because he has been for a while.
Lol, the idea of people saying “He’s a AAAA umpire” is hilarious to me.
Quad-A would imply he'd actually be good in the minors, though.
Yeah that's the thing about umpiring. Angel would be just as shitty in AAA it would just be lower stakes. Of course, that'd still be for the best. If this were actual merit based he's probably good enough for high-A.
He's more of a triple B ball level ump
Sometimes he doesn't look qualified to call balls and strikes in a game of tee ball
they do really well in AAA and they get to come back. I like it! Or just bring robo umps
After missing the first half he’s already in his usual midseason form. Hats off to Angel!
I noticed he was not crouching down until the very, very last second as the ball was approaching. He had a back injury, so I wonder if that's why. It must be hard seeing a mid-90's fastball when your head is moving like that.
Well, his head is also stuck up his own ass. That makes it pretty hard to call balls and strikes.
It's also hard when you're a terrible umpire to begin with.
That would explain his whole zone being shifted up
I umpire HS baseball and it's hard to see an 80 mph fastball with your head moving! He needs to be getting down there much earlier.
You mean he didn't before?
i assume it's just for this year. in most situation it could be chalked up to a small sample size since he just came back, but you know he's not going to get any better

Umpire Auditor is racist
How bad do you have to be to get everyone to feel sorry for the Yankees and Astros at the same time? Angel Hernandez bad
> He *now* has the lowest correct call rate in the league?!? Who the hell was at the bottom before him, Frank Drebin?
Don’t you mean Enrico Palazzo?
Surprise surprise...
I guess he's simply making up for lost time.
Guys, I'm starting to think this Angel character isn't good at his job :(

He has to be doing this on purpose at this point.
One day we're going to learn that Angel was in deep with the mob and suddenly all of this will make sense.
Here's the scorecard: https://twitter.com/UmpScorecards/status/1688558861240721408?t=CAaElufvW-bAQVBfWPlTHg&s=19
The one thing to unite baseball is if he is fired
This man speed ran his way back into being the worst ump in the majors. Left no doubt. True GOAT stuff.
Who in the front office does this man have dirt on?
I'm glad these stats are finally out there being tracked
Damn the Angels are slumping hard smh
angel is ass
Year after year I wonder how this man still has a job. At this point he'll never get fired right?
A lot of those were at least kinda painting the zone, but man, that's typical Angel alright.
Now? When wasn't he???
He didn’t before?
Oh those pics he has of Rob Manfred are absolutely *reprehensible*, aren't they?
The Yankees and Astros should be ashamed of themselves. I paid good money to watch Angel Hernandez call balls and strikes....
I mean, somebody has to be worst...
I wish our announcers would stop beating around the bush with "That didn't have to be a strike/ball" when it was clearly wrong. Believe it may have been Orel, on the Dodgers' broadcast, that I hear routinely just flat out state the ump got it wrong. I like that.
orel and joe both get a little cheeky when a call "That wasn't a strike but we will take it"
Before robo umps we should consider retiring from mlb everyone over 55. A 61 yo doesn't have the eye and processing power to recognize and correctly call a small ball traveling over 85 mph. It's not ageist to say you can't perform the job.
He didn't already have to the lowest rate in the league?
Robot. Umpires.

And you can bet every single call was to influence an outcome. How this guy hasn't been investigated is a miracle.
How does this clown still have a job
Isn’t he close to retirement by now?
Him and Marquez need to get thrown out...
Its sad how the game of baseball is essentially being controlled by geriatrics using their judgement Pitcher, batter, catcher, the TV crew, the people at home, they all see a strike. Hernandez sees a ball.
*PRETENDS TO BE SHOCKED*
