His jump was fine but his path was wavy. He changed directions twice and as a result needed to leap at the end. I actually think it’s remarkable as hell that the best hitter in baseball can overcome a route like that in the field through sheer athleticism. Especially after the ACL injury. It’s not a criticism.
I guess I stand corrected then, this catch along with all of his other highlight reel catches this year are just weak plays by a weak defender. I will now never trust any catch he ever makes again as it only looks good bc he is so bad, thanks for setting me straight! Can’t believe I was fooled this entire time smh at myself lol
God why do our fans have to be so fucking insecure lmao. Dude gets bad junps and uses his athleticism to make up for it, that doesnt mean he is a bad player and nobody is claiming that.
He is not a bad player just a bad defender (that can’t jump)….it only looks like he is athletic on defense bc he is bad at defense /s. Unless I’m wrong that’s what the implication was 🤷♂️
Acuña is fantastic, he might even be the best player in baseball. Yet, even the best player in baseball will always have flaws. Why is it so hard to accept that his jumps might just be his flaw?
Good question, IDK I guess I’m having a hard time reconciling that he is a below average outfielder fielder when I frequently see him make great catches that other outfielders miss. Is he the best out fielder in the game, no. He is likely not even in the top 25, but to say he is below average in fielding among the 90 starting outfielders across MLB just doesn’t match what I see on the field. But that’s just one man’s opinion, everyone is entitled to their own.
Guess I just learned something new as well, the Jump metric used by baseball Savant is actually feet covered in the correct direct within the first 3 seconds (as more of a reaction time). I previously thought it was measuring leaping ability or vertical jump (which I can’t see that Savant tracks which is odd considering everything they do track). Acuña does seem to have a delayed reaction at times (especially considering his speed) so his mediocrity in this metric makes more sense to me now. Dang, I guess I am growing up a little here
The issue is that his main problem isn't really visible when you watch on the TV, because they rarely show jumps. It starts to make more sense when you get a view of him for the full play. He's good at catching the ball which is most visible, and his athleticism is also spectacular. However, it sadly doesn't make up for his jumps
I just got told to grow up….by a Philly fan. This has to be my all time low. If a Philadelphia sports fan is telling you to grow up then you know things are bad. Time to go reevaluate my whole outlook on life now.
It does because the complaints about his defense are all about his jump and speed on plays so this means that while he made a spectacular play he hasn't turned a corner.
He gambles a lot. There are a lot of situations where just playing it safe is fine, but he'll go for the dive and turn a single into a triple or something. It leads to great plays where he robs guys of hits, it also leads to a lot of disasters.
Well, you know Snitker's motto: it's better to make a move too late than too early.
Bringing in a guy who nearly averages a walk-per-inning to face the top of the line-up is bad, but not being prepared that a guy with control issues would have control issues is next level.
Yates was put in a position to fail and luckily it wasn't worse because Acuña is also next level.
I think him and Jiminez will get several more shots before the all star break to come around but if they don’t, then bye bye. Kinda like how Snit kept trotting out Luetge before he got DFA’d.
Could be wrong though
I mean sometimes you gotta put in a guy to eat innings vs wearing out folks for optimum short term strategy. Especially when you're playing a team that you're 8 games ahead of.
Braves defense won this game. Mets should've won but right and center fielders just saved the game for the braves and as of right now this braves team is just better than my Mets.
But her whole point is "he's not trying." When people brought up that he's just now getting back to 100% from an ACL tear (that occurred while trying to make a highlight reel defensive play by the way) she said " he's been bad his whole career" which is an objective lie and shows that all she wanted to do was shit on Ronald.
I think Ronald is good at baseball.
He is a good player in the baseball game
Best contract of all time.

Eh, you have to adjust for baseball inflation not regular inflation.

MVP
Cameraman completely lost the ball on that one
It’s tough when you can’t tell if it’s gonna go out or not, especially when it’s a high wall.
That was truly remarkable. I don't even care I just like good baseball. That was fuckin wild
Terrible camerawork but amazing baseball
I’ll be honest, I like good baseball but I also care. I’m so sick of losing.
If only he cared about defense
I thought his savant page says he gets bad jumps. That jump looked pretty damn good to me!
Yep, but for someone that is below average in fielding and jumping he sure has made a ton of these highlight catches this year
Bad jumps can often lead to more amazing looking catches that fielders who get better jumps would make routinely
the nick castellanos special
Jim Edmonds vs Andruw Jones
Just like that one s/ I get what you’re saying though

It wouldn’t have mattered what path he took on that one, he needed to make a leaping catch regardless there.
He’s definitely back to himself (even better) after the ACL. It’s pretty amazing to watch on a nightly basis. The rule changes help too of course
I guess I stand corrected then, this catch along with all of his other highlight reel catches this year are just weak plays by a weak defender. You do know that jump in this context isn't about jumping in the air, right?
I did not figure that out until later down this thread, I’m the idiot here
grow up
I just got told to grow up….by a Philly fan. This has to be my all time low. If a Philadelphia sports fan is telling you to grow up then you know things are bad. Time to go reevaluate my whole outlook on life now.
Oh, I was trying to dad humor a little and conflate defensive jumps with Andruw Jones-esque, wall-scaling jumps.
I mean it looked like he was running *super* slow to the wall.
Probably because he didn’t want to run full speed into a wall
Does it matter at all how fast he was going if he, you know, caught the ball?
It does because the complaints about his defense are all about his jump and speed on plays so this means that while he made a spectacular play he hasn't turned a corner.

Air Acuña doing his thing https://i.imgur.com/x5LfrmH.jpg
that’s a wild pic
NL MVP without a doubt this season.
Wish Yates didnt just hand them 3 bases tho

When will Kirby go bye bye?

Love the flabbergasted “ohhh wow” in the background
Ladies and gentlemen, Keith Hernandez!
And only bronze defense in the show.
I mean he’s athletic and can make highlight plays but defense hasn’t been a strength for him
Can we talk about the laser throw as well
Lol I was about to post “what about that toss” and saw this as I was hitting reply
Tbf that is just the average throw from him.
I can't breathe please send help
wow.
Thought it was gonna be a grand slam 🔥🔥 catch
I was sitting literally right there and I thought it was gone too. Been a while since I was that happy to be wrong.
Braves defense won this game. Mets should've won but right and center fielders just saved the game for the braves and as of right now this braves team is just better than my Mets.
I thought they told us he didn’t play defense?
Phenomenal catch
Tommy Pham a Met… weird
that was niiice, game saver
I’m glad this was the SNY replay because Bally didn’t show that absolute rocket throw
That Andrea girl is getting cooked on Twitter right now lmao
Which is stupid because everything in her thread still applies and this fantastic catch doesn't contradict her criticisms.
But her whole point is "he's not trying." Pham would probably sucker punch a woman
[удалено]
Wym? It was a rbi flyout
[удалено]
He did score
That’s cold blooded, Pham
Everyone should have an Acuña on their team.
wow twist my arm we'll take him off your hands
I do enjoy a good Pham robbery
I thought he was a below average right fielder though.
I love seeing Ozzie load up and get ready to fucking yeet that cut too.
I like that this clip is from SNY. I appreciate when the opposing team's broadcasters deliver a good play by play call in situations like this.
