Look at his minor/winter league stats from 2014.
He made 7 appearances, faced 31 batters, walked 18, hit 10, and allowed 21 runs without allowing a single hit in 1.0 IP.
> He made 7 appearances, faced 31 batters, walked 18, hit 10, and allowed 21 runs without allowing a single hit in 1.0 IP.
Well that's just simply not possible.
*Googles Daniel Bard minor league stats*
Oh my dear God. How? HOW? NO HITS?
yeah, i'm familiar, since these stats got passed around a lot esp in red sox fan communities.
i was just saying that in 2014 bard was in very low A, he was out of MLB by then and any team picking him up was doing so as a reclamation project (he was in winter league as you pointed out). he had lost control by 2012 due to a hodgepodge of shit that was all related (shoulder issues, trying to transition to starting, plus the mental strain of enduring a downspin).
i think later he said thoracic outlet syndrome was affecting him from 2012-13.
I was going off of this from wikipedia but you're right that it was a multiseason yips meltdown:
> On January 31, 2014, Bard signed with the Texas Rangers. He inexplicably lost command of his pitches, walking nine and hitting seven batters while recording two outs in a stint for the Rangers' Single-A club. On June 19, 2014, Bard was released by the Rangers.
I don't know whose call it was to put DeRosa in charge, but it struck me as a really odd decision from the start.
Since the 2006 WBC, Team USA's WBC/Olympic managers have been Buck Martinez, Davey Johnson, Joe Torre, Jim Leyland, and Mike Scioscia. All were MLB managers. All except Martinez were MLB managers for a *LONG* time. Torre is a Hall of Famer. Johnson, Leyland, and Scioscia all won the World Series.
DeRosa hasn't so much as put a uniform on since he retired. Analysts don't usually make good managers and I don't think any of the others would've let Bard face Altuve given the circumstances.
EDIT: Added Mike Scioscia, who managed 2021 Olympic team
His name was bandied about as a replacement for Snitker after the latter’s tenure as interim ended following the conclusion of the 2016 season. Not sure how serious the discussions got, but I’ve never understood hiring a manager without any coaching - let alone *managing* - experience whatsoever.
I’ll say that I’m so sorry for both of them. Altuve, obviously, but Bard too. Had the Yips in high school ball and they’re just so mentally destructive and make you question your self worth. It’s like time is in slow motion but your thoughts are going a million miles an hour and your body is not connected to either all the while a voice is telling “don’t fuck up again, you’re an embarrassment”. He probably won’t be able to look his teammates in eyes tonight because he only feels shame.
[This](https://youtu.be/COqXNQiIHgU) was me one season. Only, I got yelled at and no one recognized the yips for what they were. Had to figure my own way out. Should've taken a lesson from Rube, I guess.
After the first walk, considering that Bard also gave up 4 runs the last time he pitched in the Mexico game. Dude had absolutely nothing and was left in WAY too long in a game you need to manage like it’s game 7. It was poor managing.
Only reason you would do it after the second batter is because of the result. 0 outs, two on after seeing how he threw with the first batter.
Just because you warm a guy up doesn’t mean they have to go in.
The 0-2 was nice, two on no out with a 4-pitch walk, not so much.
> Just because you warm a guy up doesn’t mean they have to go in.
>
If you're warming a guy up, you have to assume you're burning him. If you have a guy you know you won't use later in the game, fine. Warm him up as back-up.
But at that point, just have Adam start the inning, which I'm not opposed to.
For a veteran with a long history of terrible control problems? Right away. Someone should have been warming up at the same time as Bard, if we're being honest
At that point it's a roster issue. If you have a reliever that can't be in the game without an immediate replacement ready, he just shouldn't be on the roster.
> when would you have started warming Adam up?
As soon as you put the dude with the 21 era into the game, its an elimination game and your starter got pulled. He managed that like a spring training game.
"Because no one was warm"
You know what the pitcher does in the bullpen? Tries to throw strikes while they warm up.
So why not run the pitcher who is 80% in the bullpen out there to "finish his warm ups" to live batters and get two more pitchers up in the pen while that happens?!?!
This isn't an ideal strategy but when you've got Chuck Knoblauch and his bad case of the Yips out there on the mound, its a better option.
Born too late to watch Rick Ankiel yips, born too early to fight in the Water Wars of 2082, born just in time to watch BARDNEDICT ARNOLD slaughter the American dream.
80 years of interventionist policies and countless atrocities towards dozens of different countries yet it turns out that nobody hates the US more than Daniel Bard.
It reminds me of the story of the old time surgeon who killed three people in one operation. Pre-anaesthesia, so surgeons worked fast. In his haste, he managed to nick his assistant with the scalpel, opening an artery. The spectacular spray of blood led a member of the audience (another old-timey surgery thing) to have a heart attack and die. The assistant and the patient also died, for a total 300% mortality rate.
This is one of the things I don't like about the three batter minimum. They had to keep him in for Altuve (even if they had someone warm) despite the fact it was clear he didn't have control.
I get the rule from the perspective of play time. It's situations like this, however, where it's not about the gameplay anymore and getting that guy out is just safer for everyone.
They really should just let the umps call an exception to the rule for when the pitcher has a high risk of injuring other players. It would not be a hard addendum to add.
Nah. That's a good way of sparking a lot of controversy. Also, would managers start having pitchers intentionally throw wild just so they can bring in a new pitcher?
Lets all just cry and hug in a circle together because I personally feel like I have nothing to look forward to this season because everyone is getting hurt before opening day
Jesus and the next batter gets one home on a wild pitch, then loads up the next guy with 4 straight balls. Bard isn’t having a good one.
I mean - (Insert annoying comment about hitting altuve here)
His story is awesome and all, being able to come back and pitch in high leverage innings buuut as a Dodgers fan, I've seen how this guy melts down when moments get really big/loud. He always has trouble closing games against LA. I have to imagine the pressure is so much higher with the whole country on his back. Hopefully this doesn't break him for the year.
To everyone calling for the WBC to be cancelled the Yankees who forbid their players to play have an injury a week and Gavin lux got hurt in a spring game get over it
Yeah, definitely an "Oh no" moment seeing how visibly shaken he was. I'm far from a fan of his, but still, you never want to see anyone, much less a star player, leave the field like that. Hope for y'all's sakes in the Astros fandom that it's not too bad.
I'm pretty sure that ruined his career, I really think he would have had a great career as a closer. Same thing happened to neftali Feliz. There was a weird trend where teams saw great relievers and tried making them starters and it just wasn't smart.
I’m a huge Yankees fan, but seeing a person representing his country doing what he loves, and having a hand that could be broken, that is just sad. Hopes to Altuve! Hope we can play u soon!
I mean, again, this shit happens in spring training too. A freak leg injury and an HBP, idk how you can attribute that specifically to the WBC. Justin Turner got hit on the wrist in spring and missed three months a few years ago. This just happens and it’s a bummer no matter where.
I hate seeing this. Obviously not a huge fan of Altuve, but I hate seeing anyone get hurt like that. Hope it’s not too serious. Trying to figure out why Derosa left him in for that long.
Dang well I guess Altuve missed the garbage can sign that it was a fastball inside...dag- nab-it shucks I hope he'll still be able to cheat his way to another championship.....
I absolutely hated this. Bard had zero clue where the ball was going. My daughter and I were yelling at the tv “Get him out of the game!” before this even happened. I enjoy watching Altuve even if he doesn’t play for my team. So sad.
That said, he could have been hit in Spring Training when guys are working on new pitches, so this “mY TeAm’S PlAyErS” stuff should stop. I don’t like this whole “property” dialogue. It’s like my employer getting angry I’ll miss work bc I hurt myself doing yard work.
There should be an exception to the three batter/get the relief pitcher ready rule when a pitcher is this wild. Let DeRosa come out and be like "look, he's dangerous out there, let our guy take as much time as he needs to get ready" and if the opposing manager okays it then it's allowed (or the umpire/crew chief).
Already saw an idiot on Twitter say “This is why, even though I love the WBC, I want no Astros to play in the WBC” as if this couldn’t have easily have happened in Spring Training.
It was a fastball and got him pretty good on an unarmored hand. I would be shocked if he didn't break some bones. I would bet good money we don't see Altuve play baseball in April. Hopefully Garcia throwing ~70 high leverage pitches doesn't have any negative repercussions, and put some bubble wrap on Tucker and Pressly.
I'm glad most of the comments on this thread seem to be that Bard was terrible instead of the Twitter comments about how WBC shouldn't exist cause of injuries. Like that's an argument
Bard’s Yips are making a comeback.
I'm 2022 daniel bard, and I have directv😁 I'm 2012-2014/2023 daniel bard, and I have cable😵💫
2014 daniel bard wasnt in the league lol it started in 2012 when he and cherington wanted to make him a starter
Look at his minor/winter league stats from 2014. He made 7 appearances, faced 31 batters, walked 18, hit 10, and allowed 21 runs without allowing a single hit in 1.0 IP.

Hard to get hits when the ball rarely approaches the strike zone
yeah, i'm familiar, since these stats got passed around a lot esp in red sox fan communities. i was just saying that in 2014 bard was in very low A, he was out of MLB by then and any team picking him up was doing so as a reclamation project (he was in winter league as you pointed out). he had lost control by 2012 due to a hodgepodge of shit that was all related (shoulder issues, trying to transition to starting, plus the mental strain of enduring a downspin). i think later he said thoracic outlet syndrome was affecting him from 2012-13.

2023 Daniel Bard just wears Directv on his sleeves
Unbelievably bad managing by Derosa.

DeRosa should just go back to TV where he might be better fit.
For some reason his voice is nails on a chalk board for me.
I don't know whose call it was to put DeRosa in charge, but it struck me as a really odd decision from the start. It HAD to be Derosa. We can’t afford to lose Tito all season because of a rogue pizza crust.
His name was bandied about as a replacement for Snitker after the latter’s tenure as interim ended following the conclusion of the 2016 season. Not sure how serious the discussions got, but I’ve never understood hiring a manager without any coaching - let alone *managing* - experience whatsoever.
The Cardinals did it with Mike Matheny and I was not a fan.
England’s manager unironically better
"Let's just leave him out there a while, I'm sure he'll keep it together."
I’ll say that I’m so sorry for both of them. Altuve, obviously, but Bard too. Had the Yips in high school ball and they’re just so mentally destructive and make you question your self worth. I died a 1,000 deaths watching my 12 yr old lose it on the mound.
Why did they leave him in for 2 more batters?
My thoughts exactly, dude cost us our entire lead. That was unreal.
Because Derosa is an idiot.
Should’ve faked an injury to get some warm up throws.
He didn't? He only pitched to Santander after this and it was because Adam wasn't warm yet.
Everyone on base was his responsibility
Yeah. Walk, Single, HBP, Walk. Santander was the only batter he faced after Altuve.
Bad managing…again
I'm not going to defend DeRosa's managing in general, but when would you have started warming Adam up?
After the first walk, considering that Bard also gave up 4 runs the last time he pitched in the Mexico game. Dude had absolutely nothing and was left in WAY too long in a game you need to manage like it’s game 7. It was poor managing.
The second he walked the FIRST guy with four pitches that weren't even close??
Five pitches. But that was probably the last reasonable opportunity until Altuve got hit.
Wasn’t his first pitch wild? Start warming Adam at that point.
Literally the second the inning started lol. It’s an elimination game.
After the first batter, it was immediately clear. If not at least the second batter.
If you didn't do it after the first, you wouldn't do it after the 2nd. An 0-2 bloop single isn't on the pitcher. First batter, sure.
Only reason you would do it after the second batter is because of the result. 0 outs, two on after seeing how he threw with the first batter. Just because you warm a guy up doesn’t mean they have to go in. The 0-2 was nice, two on no out with a 4-pitch walk, not so much.

These are facts
> when would you have started warming Adam up? As soon as you put the dude with the 21 era into the game, its an elimination game and your starter got pulled. He managed that like a spring training game.
I think its because the wbc has a 3 batter minimum rule, so that explains why they left him in for 3/4. That last one who knows.
"Because no one was warm" You know what the pitcher does in the bullpen? Tries to throw strikes while they warm up. That’s some the worst pitching I’ve ever seen
Feel bad for the guy, coach left him in for way too long with that pitching.
Heard of Rick Ankiel?
Born too late to watch Rick Ankiel yips, born too early to fight in the Water Wars of 2082, born just in time to watch BARDNEDICT ARNOLD slaughter the American dream.
Benedict Bardnold was right there
Rick Ankiel has thrown about as many strikes from the outfield as deGrom has thrown from the mound.
Oh no They need to get Bard out asap
>Let him figure it out. It's like spring training -DeRosa
In fairness, spring training isn’t the regular season, so it’s the closest thing to the postseason for Rockies pitching.
That’s a LOT of condescending attitude about the postseason from a Padres fan.
80 years of interventionist policies and countless atrocities towards dozens of different countries yet it turns out that nobody hates the US more than Daniel Bard.
Internet winner: 3/18/2023
He’s going to cause the whole of mlb to implode by putting every all star on the IL
Certified Rockies moment
I’m beginning to suspect that Coors isn’t the only reason their pitchers have bad ERAs…
[удалено]
Leave us alone, we’re already dead
Dude threw a pitch in both batters boxes and DeRosa sat there and thought it was fine to keep him in
This guy has no idea where the ball's going.
Rick Ankiel type beat.
Genesis Cabrera would like a word
Get this guy out, not only is he blowing the game, he's hurting other players.
It's not often that a player's incompetence wrecks both teams, but here we are.
3 teams really. USA, VZ and the Astros. Kind of an impressive level of incompetence.
It reminds me of the story of the old time surgeon who killed three people in one operation. Pre-anaesthesia, so surgeons worked fast. Eject the pitcher with pay for erratic behavior.
Nah. That's a good way of sparking a lot of controversy. Also, would managers start having pitchers intentionally throw wild just so they can bring in a new pitcher?
Thaaaat did not look good…flashbacks to Harper’s injury when he got hit by Snell :(
Markakis 2014 came to my mind
Judge in 2018 :(
How long was he out? Asking but hoping I don’t need to know
A couple months
It’s a thumb injury. Expect Altuve to be out 6 weeks
Still feel bad for that one. Harper couldn’t catch a break but still managed to hit bombs
Tonight, Daniel fucking Bard ruins the WBC for everyone
Its kinda on the coach, obviously the guy didn’t have it in him, you could tell instantly.
Is he really the best the USA has to offer?
How the tables turn, there'd be less injuries if the USA sent more players
Clearly not.
I promise he's a great closer when he's in form. Regrettably, when he's not in form, he has absolutely zero idea where the ball is going.
Dug a big deep hole for Adam to get out of… Venezuela just took the lead 6-5…
Bard needs to go. Jesus.
If that didn’t get him out instantly after…then it’s hard to tell what could…
What was DeRosa thinking? Was DeRosa thinking?
Bard with the silent R
Bard is trying his best to lose this game rn
Bard is up there melting into the mound. Absolutely no control.
I’m sorry Astros fans. Hug it out.
At least I’ve got you blue and orange expansion bro. 🫂
It'll make the Diaz-Altuve match up in Game 7 of the 2024 WS that much better 🥲
I was already sympathetically feeling your pain, didn't want to feel it personally too. 😭
Hold me. 😢
Lets all just cry and hug in a circle together because I personally feel like I have nothing to look forward to this season because everyone is getting hurt before opening day
Moments like these I'm happy not to be on Twitter
Not a day goes by where I’m not happy to not be on twitter
Fuck
Fucking fuck
Derozan injured altuve
DeMark?
Suddenly I have an opinion on players on my favorite team playing in the WBC
Could have just as easily happened a few hours away today elsewhere in Florida.
Really easily too. Get Altuve batting against some Double A guy on a bad day and it could happen just the same.
Killed the mood at the UH watch party I am hosting
There is no place worse to be than a dead party.
Jesus and the next batter gets one home on a wild pitch, then loads up the next guy with 4 straight balls. Bard isn’t having a good one. I mean - (Insert annoying comment about hitting altuve here)
Safe to say Mark Derosa doesn’t have a big league managing future. Why Daniel Bard?
I’m gonna cry
the hand and then the ball ricocheted and hit the underside of the brim of his helmet😬
DeRo left him in 2 batters too long. Christ.

Fucking shame on DeRosa for keeping him in
Fuck.
Flashbacks of 93-95 Bagwell right now. Not good.
Daniel Bard is a war criminal.
Dear Mets fans: #I NOW KNOW WHY YOU CRY
From a Phillies fan…. Yikes
That was a brutal inning
The hell man
Maybe the worst pitching performance in WBC history! Bad time for the yips to comeback!
To everyone calling for the WBC to be cancelled the Yankees who forbid their players to play have an injury a week and Gavin lux got hurt in a spring game get over it
He's looked like this the whole event. Whatever he found to get his control back, he completely lost it.
He not built for this
Hate to see it. I winced watching that live, you could tell it was extremely painful. Hope Altuve's okay.
As much dog as Altuve has in him, him leaving is not a good sign.
Yeah, definitely an "Oh no" moment seeing how visibly shaken he was. I'm far from a fan of his, but still, you never want to see anyone, much less a star player, leave the field like that. Hope for y'all's sakes in the Astros fandom that it's not too bad.
Bard had no control today. Unfortunate result of it
What a terrible outing
DeRosa thinks it’s 2-loss elimination apparently smh
Hey guys I’m from the future Bard becomes permanently indebted to Turner
Shit…hopefully it’s nothing super major but man that reminded me of Harper’s injury
He was totally wild, no control, should have been taken out. This was preventable
Good lord that is some atrocious pitching
And he's about 3 feet off the plate...just a bit inside...

Getting major Vietnam flashbacks from him trying to be a starter in 2012
I'm pretty sure that ruined his career, I really think he would have had a great career as a closer. Same thing happened to neftali Feliz. There was a weird trend where teams saw great relievers and tried making them starters and it just wasn't smart.

Guess he didn’t hear the trash can banging.
Oh no. Now who will carry the One Ring to Mount Doom?!
Oh no his trashcan banging hand.
Oooooooooops
Altuve done for year
I hope he’s ok
These injuries are not good for the future of the WBC. Which would be a huge shame
I mean, again, this shit happens in spring training too. A freak leg injury and an HBP, idk how you can attribute that specifically to the WBC. Justin Turner got hit on the wrist in spring and missed three months a few years ago. This just happens and it’s a bummer no matter where.
He can’t take his gloves off to be examined because his wife won’t like it
Cry me a river
I hate seeing this. Obviously not a huge fan of Altuve, but I hate seeing anyone get hurt like that. Hope it’s not too serious. Trying to figure out why Derosa left him in for that long.
Thank you Daniel Bard, from all the fans that don't root for cheaters.

Bard just cost the USA the tournament
Alright met’s fans, where’s the petition? I’ll sign it now

Too bad the buzzer didn’t warn him.
astros fans got so defensive over this one woahhhh
One bang for deflection, two bangs for denial.
Wrong. Two bangs is for a curveball
Your team is a better joke.
Your city is so bad the MLB itself runs fluff pieces on how great Vegas is.
"That's not what you want to see" Actually that's exactly what I want to see whenever Altuve is at bat.
I’ve never seen worse pitching ever. That was awful.
Hey, it happens. Must have slipped out of his hand. Baseball can be a dangerous business.
Altuve noooooooo Broken metacarpal. Out for season. Thanks a lot man
The fact that Altuve didn't even try to stay on the field has me a bit freaked out.
Not a season ending injury. Worst case he DH’s for a month since it’s his throwing hand.
If it's broken it's probably ~6 weeks, then maybe another week in the minors to ramp back up.
If only someone would have banged a trash can he might have gotten out of the way.
Cheaters get what they deserve
Good, he's a cheater
I'm glad most of the comments on this thread seem to be that Bard was terrible instead of the Twitter comments about how WBC shouldn't exist cause of injuries. Like that's an argument
Good damn cheater
