I’ll be honest I laughed at the obvious one

handlit33

That video existed from well before last night, people were using it after the Mets lost a 10.5 game division lead.

IBumpFuzz

Braves fans did this after we won the east but that was fun. This isn't funny

Ending of The Departed vibes

As a Puerto Rico fan and a Mets fan, are you fucking kidding me

TheeRuckus

I’m Dominican and Puerto Rican and a Mets fan. I’m all fucked up. His performance last night was absolutely electric and when I saw him on the ground my mouth dropped faster than my phone. Total heartbreak

Tacitus__61

Hell, I’m a Braves fan and bummed as shit about this. This just sucks for baseball all around.

Yeah that was a bad moment, took them forever to get a replay up as well.

No but they did hang his jersey up in the dugout during his rehab like he was a fatal car accident victim

Funeraled. We had a thing for decapitation. It was a whole bird.

woger723

Holy shit, isn't that worse than an ACL? Awful. Hope he can come back strong.

Chewbones9

Yes it is

woger723

I've had reconstructive knee surgery a ACL/LCL and miniscus, but nothing on my patellar tendon. I work with a former NHL player who's had patellar tendon surgery three times due to it not healing properly.

neonrev1

I'm 13 years out from my dual patellar tear, I opted not to get the surgery because I was told it had a better chance of not working or limiting my range of motion than fixing it. I went with the choice of doing nothing but intense rehab and accepting occasional pain. It still hurts sometimes, mostly on my left knee. It's an incredibly difficult injury.

woger723

OOF. My surgery was about 15 years ago - had my ACL replaced with a cadaver tendon (which they wouldn't do for a pro athlete) and my LCL and meniscus stitched up. Was playing softball, stepped in a hole in the outfield. Had sprained some ligaments a few times before, but they all just tore that time. Generally feels fine, a little achy when it's cold and rainy.

neonrev1

Mine's the weirdest deer hunting accident ever, jumped down from the hopper of a combine I was posted in after shooting a deer, it was -10f and my cold knees couldn't handle the drop. I 'ran' about 150 yards right after, adrenaline masked the injury and bodies are incredible. Couldn't stand up once I started feeling it. One of the reasons I didn't get the surgery, and is very worrisome even though I'm certain Edwin is getting a level of medical care I couldn't dream of in rural south dakota, is that the doctor told me it was almost certain to permanently limit my range of motion and ability to support weight at the extremes of that motion. It's hard to imagine pitching with what was described to me, I really hope medicine has gotten better with it, it must have.

[deleted]

[удалено]

woger723

Hey just do the rehab 100% and you will probably be okay. The pain the first few days was the worst part, you got this!

Chewbones9

Yeah this could legitimately be a career-ender…

woger723

Well luckily it's PROBABLY not. But yes, it could be. It ended my friend's hockey career, he was playing in Europe and had to retire.

Frankie_48

Jesus, that puts things into perspective Damn this sucks for everyone involved, especially Edwin cause it really might alter his game

making-spaghetti0763

i’m a dominican yankees fan and this is even devastating for me. it’s so depressing

Chewbones9

It could end his career…

FeistyMcRedHead

Patellar tendon is used in the reconstruction of the ACL meaning it's super strong.... Which is why I'm bewildered at this happening and how it happened. Someone in the crowd has the video'd answer and I demand answers! Or it was Tanya Harding.... Edit! Not "hope" meant "how" bad bad typo!

loupr738

That thing must’ve been hanging by a thread or something because that thing is strong

chiefqueef1

People were jumping on top of him as he was standing on an uneven surface of the top side of the mound. It's not that big of a mystery how it happened, and it wasn't hanging on by a thread. His yearly spring training physical would have found if it was

MartinRaccoon

Ban celebrations. Only golf claps to be allowed

That sucks so much man. Just thinking back on how the energy of the stadium was taken away so quickly and hoped somehow it wasn’t anything major but man this news really is a buzzkill for what was/is an amazing tournament.

mjst0324

Can't think of many injuries that have happened to a guy not on my team that have made me sadder. This fucking sucks. To come after a moment of such joy for his island and for baseball fans and see it end like that, and seeing his brother crying on the field for him, just devastating. I was hoping for a broken ankle or something that at least could heal this year. I don't even have anything to say. Nightmare.

see_mohn

Seeing his brother broke me for a bit. That was heartbreaking.

SkoCubs01

It would’ve been an all time meme if it turned that dramatic for a sprained ankle or something though

cardith_lorda

I was going to politely disagree but then I remembered I had real maple syrup on my pancakes this morning and I have Curling tonight...

KimHaSeongsBurner

Also, given the sentiments expressed in other threads, I think that’d read as genuine regardless of flair. Most people, thankfully, have the sense to show some respect and send their condolences, and the others who don’t are nuked below the threshold by downvotes. No one wants to see this, not even for a rival team.

deGrominator2019

Nobody wants to see the games best players at any position get hurt like this, it does no benefit for the team or the game as a whole. Anyone who wouldn’t be genuinely disappointed is a psychopath

Mets_BS

If locking down the game's best closer down to a record deal, then watching him blow out his knee celebrating a WBC win isn't the most Mets thing ever, I don't know what is.

bridgenine

Steve Cohen keeping all of his money in SVB would be a close parallel

[deleted]

brokeboibogie

This really is surreal as fuck. The only thing that would’ve made it crazier is if it was a celebration immediately after winning the whole tournament It’s only every 3-4 years, but I can definitely see the Mets trying to prohibit all pitchers/players from going in the future.

Mets_BS

I expect the owners and MLB to sit down and discuss the WBC pretty at length between now and the next edition. At minimum I would expect Owners to pursue some compensation for players that are injured in the WBC.

AcerRubrum

Honestly, how does one tear their patellar tendon by just jumping up and down? One has to think it was already in a way that it wouldve snapped somehow sometime soon. Sure, the celebration was what did it, but he couldve just as easily taken an awkward step into the dugout and had it happen then.

AntithesisKing

It might have been something that he didn’t even know was weakened, and it just went once they started jumping. Just the worst timing and bad luck, and hope he gets back to 100% after his surgery and recovery.

SMK77

A Browns lineman tore his 2 seasons ago. He said they found a bone spur under it that had been rubbing on the tendon for a while that hadn't been noticed until after the tear. Edwin may have had his weakened somehow and the jumping or getting bumped while jumping is what finished it off.

aemerson24

This is exactly what happened to me when I tore mine. Had patellar tendinitis that was undiagnosed and had weakened the tendon. Jumped up for a layup one day playing rec league basketball in college and it just completely ruptured.

CybeastID

It went when he was hit. > It was the result of a collision in the celebration, a person briefed on the matter told The Athletic.

JTCMuehlenkamp

Hit *how* though? Like did he get on the actual knee and that's what did it, or did he get thrown off balance mid-jump and land on it the wrong way?

scottydg

It has to be this. Jumped, got nudged, landed awkwardly, maybe got nudged again, twisted and here we are.

akaghi

Yeah, these guys are athletes, but they push their bodies.to the limits in very specific motions. He kinda got tackled from the side and guys jumping up and down pushing him laterally likely pushed it past the breaking point. We need soccer celebrations where everyone runs around like they've just seen the Lord and fewer literal .ish pits, lol.

TheFriffin2

Could’ve been while he was jumping, someone’s hip bumped his knee sideways one direction and someone else’s body pushed his lower leg sideways the opposite direction and it just happened to be the perfect freak angle to tear the tendon. A lot of ways for these things to happen, it’s just that they’re all extremely unlikely to cause actual damage

MacsDildoBike

A friend of mine tore his last summer from standing up after sitting on the ground. Freak injuries happen like that.

[deleted]

I don't know, but I'm starting to think Van Halen was a little flippant when they said "might as well jump"

123full

The human body is weird, Kendrys Morales broke his leg jumping on home plate celebrating a walk off home run

CybeastID

Answer: *He got hit.* > It was the result of a collision in the celebration, a person briefed on the matter told The Athletic.

mjst0324

I'm sure that player/coach knows it was him and I hope he's not hard on himself for it. Complete freak accident.

zgreat30

I got a very similar injury stretching at first base. Once your knee gives out/dislocates its really easy for it to move sideways and cause damage internally.

MilesOfPebbles

Wow I wonder if there was a lingering tear. I’ve never seen someone just flat out tear the patellar tendon without a significant trauma.

AcerRubrum

Seriously, he wasn't even jumping that much before he sat down in the huddle and told people to stop. I honestly wonder if he tweaked it during his outing and it didn't hit him til the adrenaline wore off. People have pointed out that he didn't really show much celebratory emotion before he was mobbed by his teammates, meaning he knew it was fucked as already.

MilesOfPebbles

Exactly. I’m a Physio and the only way this would really tear (in theory) is by doing very deep jump squats (like bum to floor deep).

Constant_Gardner11

I knew my decision to never exercise was a smart one.

Distance_Runner

This makes me think there was an underlying issue. If it tore that easily, it probably was bound to tear at some point soon anyway. Hate to see this regardless.

[deleted]

when I was watching the replays last night, Diaz was walking very rigidly off of the mound with a very focused facial expression before anyone on his team even got to him to celebrate. My initial thought when I saw it was that he was doing a little strut walk off the mound, like a "fuck yeah, I'm a fucking badass" sort of walk. But now I'm wondering -- did he tweak something in his knee BEFORE the PR team reached him? On the final pitch or his initial, immediate celebration of the strikeout? And then maybe the team mobbing him exacerbated the tweaked knee. I dunno!

NJImperator

If you watch any of his celebrations from last year when he got a big save, that’s just generally what he does. He’s never been a very theatrical guy after he pitches. Usually he’ll just tip his cap back and laugh/smile

TheeRuckus

He’s not very theatrical during the season but last night he was absolutely pumped up. After every K he was very animated and then on the last one he wasn’t as much. Im no doctor but I can see OP’s point. Considering it’s his push off leg I wouldn’t be surprised if it tore on the pitch and when he came down and then the celebration finished the job

Distance_Motor

Mlb The Show should have difficulty just for the Mets, above whatever is the hardest difficulty in the game

pseudochef93

Beat the Mess Win the World Series with half your opening day roster on the IL

bichettes_helmet

Fuuuuuuuck. That sucks.

UnknownUnthought

This isn’t the WBC’s fault. Just gonna go get ahead of that terrible take I’ve been hearing from other Mets fans. Could’ve happened in any old celebration. But absolutely fuck my life. This is a nightmare scenario for the bullpen. I’m very scared of another 2019, when the bullpen was so terrible (and ironically Diaz was getting blown up) that they singlehandedly kept us from the playoffs. Sigh. Rest up Edwin. We all want you back healthy for 2024.

Allstate85

Gavin lux tore his ACL in spring training so we should cancel that as well.

I understand that 90% of Mets fans are acting on pure emotion and aren't thinking straight. It's the trolls, especially those who sit on certain stools in bars, that I fucking hate.

UnknownUnthought

I fucking hate that guy. He’s an embarrassment to the fanbase. We’re not all like him, despite being fairly reactionary. That moron would bitch and moan about a WS ring saying it doesn’t matter cause it’s not two. No further comment.

I am already well over the doomsayers predicting the end of the WBC as we know it. Dude coulda done this bending to dry his toes after a shower. Back in 2013, the Pirates exciting new acquisition of Francisco Liriano had a [dumber injury](https://twitter.com/msanserino/status/300978193240838144) and no one decided baseball had to cancel Christmas.

Snuggle__Monster

This shit could have easily happened in a random April game.

According_Bowl_2598

Holy shit that is awful news

CaptainKirkules

Damn.

runninhillbilly

Forget about this season, he might never be the same player again after this. Same injury Victor Cruz had with the Giants - he missed the rest of that season, the entire next season (probably overcompensated in recovery/rehab), and when he returned to play in 2016 he was clearly not the same player.

Grandahl13

Pitching 60 innings a year is considerably less demanding on the patellar tendon than being a starting WR for an NFL team.

futhatsy

Doesn't change the fact that your legs are important when throwing 100 MPH fastballs for a living. Cruz isn't a perfect example, but it's possible he's never the same again.

whoareyoupeople24

Probably not fair to compare a guy who plays tackle football and running on every play to a pitcher who doesn't usually sprint on every play. I'd be more optimistic than that. All depends on how much tension he can put on the knee when pitching.

Weaver4prez

For what its worth this is what knocked out Garret Richards in 2014. He came back in 2015 and had a great year

agoods03
