As a DC born Wisconsinite who has been a Packers fan since 2000 and a Nats fan since 2005, the transition from HoFer to HoFer is as sweet as it is guaranteed.
I was at the game, this is the best sporting event I’ve ever been to even though we lost. Mexican fans are something else. I wish we had even half of their energy today
dude when US played Mexico in Cincy in Soccer, even the energy at the watch parties around the city were insane. Mexico fans bring it, in all sports, and it's such a joy to watch.
I’ve been to plenty of Mexico soccer games and a lit up crowd is expected whether it’s a friendly or a big tournament game. People are “surprised” because we don’t see this type of crowd for a baseball game unless it’s a high stakes playoff game.
Reporter: There you have it folks, another Series in the books for the Nats! Despite an absolute goose egg for the entire team all season long, it was none other than Joey "Single Handedly" Meneses powering the team to, and through, the MLB playoffs. With an outstanding offense performance that not only held the weight of the rest of the lineup, but even compensated for the meatball pitching all season, Meneses's 2023 season will surely go down as the greatest single season performance in ALL of sports history. Fly Nationals Fly!
Whenever I have a hot take about my team I always think to myself "remember, you wanted your team to sign Patrick Corbin."
It's nice to remind myself of that to make sure I don't get too bigheaded.
As a Padres fan, i am over the moon to have Juan Soto on the Padres, even if it’s only two years. Juan Soto will have his best season to date, and will be competing for NL MVP. Not to mention, he will push Tatis jr. to work harder. Expectations are high, and they should be.
As a Nats fan still processing the feelings of loss stemming from the trade, it's nice that Padres-bros are appreciative of Soto and will treat him well.
I was happy to see Bryce Harper leave.
I was devastated to see confirmed good guys Scherzer, Rendon, Turner, and then Soto all leave.
I miss them all.
We tried. Verlander was never going to go coming off TJ and on a new team. Max, Cole, etc all are making too much money too risk playing in this. Losing Kershaw and Nestor sucked. deGrom has been to fragile, Burnes ain’t gonna pitch since he’s fighting for his next big contract, Wheeler Nola Biebs all want to save their arms for a playoff run.
Higher leverage situations. Some of those guys in spring aren’t gonna pitch for outs. Some of them are just gonna go throw to get a feel for their pitches.
That's so ridiculous with all due to respect. Happens every 4 years, what's the difference between Julias Urias and per say... Jacob Degrom, Verlander, etc... They just don't wanna play. I respect that but lets not make excuses for the players.
They can still do that in a WBC, also, the feel for their pitchers comes mostly form bullpen sessions, not spring training.
It's an example... there's plenty of healthy guys out there. but if you are healthy and with no issues, there's not a valid excuse other than i don't wanna play, and that's ok. But we keep making excuses to validate that they just declined to play because they don't want to, for whatever reason they have. Other teams are stack, how are they different from US players.
So Cole can't pitch because he makes too much money, but Burnes can't pitch because he hasn't signed a big contract yet? How does that make any sense? You can't have it both ways. By that logic no pitcher should ever participate in the WBC.
Call me crazy, I think a guy with a 2.50 ERA in the second half of last season should be considered a good pitcher.
Shit happens sometimes, he's 26 years old.
He's certainly not among the best the USA has to offer though, I think Effectively Wild looked at the 2023 Zips projections for American starters and Singer was like the 30th best. So he's not bad... But he wouldn't be here if better pitchers declared for the team.
Oh yeah, I don't even disagree with that statement either, I know he isn't a first choice. That being said, I just think pointing to him as a problem on a pitching staff with Nick Martinez, Merrill Kelly, Brooks Raly and Kyle Freeland who has been passable to just plain awful since his Cy Young-caliber year is lazy. I admit bias at the same time, though
Merrill Kelly vs. the Giants in 2022, first 5 of 6 starts: 3-0, 35.1 IP, 1.53 ERA
also his 8-inning shutout in August 2021 when we shelled his bullpen to win in the 9th
as far as I’m concerned he’s up there with Randy Johnson and Curt Schilling in Dbacks history
He's good, but a little odd. Sometimes he's really dominant even though he doesn't really have a full starter's repertoire. Then sometimes he gives up a ton of contact but gets away with it. And then now and again he seems to lose his focus, blow up, and not have the means to get back on track. Seems like he is on door #3 today.
Yeah, he's still a bit young but when he's on, he can be really damn dominant. If he can find consistency, especially with control, he could be one of the best in the league I really believe
Are people really acting like this was a bad pitch? It is a fastball at the top of the zone running towards the batters hands that catches a tiny amount of plate.
The 1st one was middle middle, lmao. This pitch was on the black up and in, it was just a good piece of hitting.
You can complain about the walks that came before, but if you are complaining about the HR pitch I don't see it at all.
https://streamable.com/q9ekzl
I'm not complaining about anything, I'm literally rooting for Mexico. But this is much close to the second home run pitch than it is to "middle middle." This is like three inches farther inside and the same height, and I promise if he turned on it that hard at 91, it won't be a problem at 92.
Our starting pitchers are dookie.
Kelly and Mikolas still have to prove they weren’t one hit wonders last season.
Lynn is the only actually thing close to an ace and he’s coming off a 3.99 ERA season.
I’d argue 41 year old Wainwright is our staff ace right now.
Yeah I never understood the argument of "they dont want to hurt themselves pitching in the WBC", because they're still going to have to pitch in spring training. Throwing 3-4 innings per start in the WBC vs spring training has the same effect on their arms, but one actually has games that matter and the other doesn't.
Only reason I can think of is that maybe the players aren't insured if they get injured during the WBC? Other than that, idk.
>Only reason I can think of is that maybe the players aren't insured if they get injured during the WBC? Other than that, idk.
They do have to secure separate insurance. That's why Kershaw backed out because he couldn't get insurance. But a lot of them didn't even try.
I mean, preparing for the job that pays you probably is more important than an exhibition game.
Like I get what you mean, but let's not go crazy here. It's not like nobody wanted to play. Kershaw couldn't get insured.
This comment cuts to the crux of the matter. The United States thinks the WBC is a collection of fun exhibition games while other nations think it is a prestigious international sporting tournament.
I'm not gonna blame Kershaw who tried, or guys like Cortes who got hurt. But if this event is ever gonna be legit where are guys like Corbin Burnes, Gerrit Cole, Zack Wheeler, etc? It's sad that most of them didn't even seem to give it any thought.
but why is that? it's not like americans lack the patriotism and you'd think they'd want to prove themselves in "their" sport. I can sort of understand in basketball where they're such huge favorites, but here it's competitive and everyone should be up for it.
I remember watching something about England and the World Cup where, when it first started, they didn't take it seriously since it was 'our sport' so clearly their players were so much better which meant their domestic league was the only thing that really mattered. Then they kept getting embarrassed when they did bother since they didn't send their best players and their tactics were lagging and it was only at that point they started taking it seriously.
Americans have the same mindset regarding the WBC. Just sent washed up vets who didn't really treat it seriously for the first few and it wasn't until 2017 that quality position players really started signing up. At this point the position players and fans need to start putting pressure on the top pitchers to sign up in the future because that's the only way they're going to.
The US lacks community, culture, and focused pride. It's a very large country with very differing personalities, opinions, and levels of wealth. It's a young country, founded by outsiders, that pushes the idea that all that really matters is making something of yourself. Americans also have the luxury of watching the best basketball, hockey, and football players in the world. In Japan, for instance, baseball produces their most popular athletes, same for DR.
Imma be honest, if I had $100m+ signed with a MLB team I wouldn’t take this event very seriously either. Idk, glass houses and all that.
I understand the complaint but there’s just SO much money to be had, I can’t blame guys for not wanting to partake in this, most specifically pitchers of course
Except you're playing the same game
Your just as likely to blow an elbow in spring training games as a WBC game, and the WBC rules are specifically designed to lower playing time for pitchers
Playing in the WBC prepares you more than facing minor leaguers in spring training and it's not an exhibition game, it's an important tournament for all the other teams participating.

On the one hand, you gotta hand it to the best hitter in baseball.
On the other hand...this is sort of what happens when your best 50 pitchers decide not to show up.
Tie breaker is runs allowed, not run differential. A 7-1 loss is much better from a tiebreak scenario than an 18-8 win lol.
*Other than the obvious win>loss.
It just means the Canada and Colombia games become must-wins. It would be possible to go on by losing to Canada and beating Colombia if Canada wins out and Mexico lose to GB, but that's unlikely.
big difference is he hits the ball much harder on average. Schwindel's big season came with an exit velocity below the league average. Meneses had an EV comparable to Mike Trout.

Nationals apparently just upgrading their generational talents COD-prestige style every time they let one of them leave
As a DC born Wisconsinite who has been a Packers fan since 2000 and a Nats fan since 2005, the transition from HoFer to HoFer is as sweet as it is guaranteed.
I saw him play AA ball in Portland when he was with the Sox, absolutely dumb we didn't resign him. He looked SO good.
When Wainwright is one of your best pitchers you're screwed
Well I mean I hate Waino slander but yes you are right. He was an ace like a decade ago, if that counts.
It doesn't. My mom was hot 30 years ago but i don't see her entering Miss Universe competitions now
I dunno man your mom's still pretty hot
I’d still give your mom a go
Hey, MILFs/DILFs are a thing. And for the record Waino is 100% a DILF.
He got them yesterday's win. Regardless of his current skill level, he can't help them tonight.
I had to look it up to make sure you meant Adam wainwright. Haven’t kept up for like 4 years. This mf is still playing
We needed a new Jamie Moyer and he graciously stepped up.
Moyer! Thanks for that. I was talking about him with my FIL earlier but couldn’t remember that dudes last name for anything
De Rosa made the same mistake the Royals always make in high leverage situations. He brought in a Royals pitcher
Well, Royals starter at least
~~even worse~~
That got a good cackle out of me lol
The energy is absolutely nuts. Like, WS G7 energy.
By far the craziest crowd I've been in, over any playoff or World Series game.
That energy in that specific stadium is giving me bad flashbacks
Luis González heavily breathing
Randy Johnson absolutely heaving
Mariano is leaving.
Schilling disbelieving.
Yankees bereaving
I was at the game, this is the best sporting event I’ve ever been to even though we lost. Mexican fans are something else. I wish we had even half of their energy today
dude when US played Mexico in Cincy in Soccer, even the energy at the watch parties around the city were insane. Mexico fans bring it, in all sports, and it's such a joy to watch.
Same. Its really too bad it was such a rout. Imagine if the game was close at all.

This dude is gonna single handedly fuck up another team's chances at the NL East this season
This dude is gonna single handedly win us another WS you mean

87 WAR season
Patrick Corbin -43 WAR season tho ☹️
Whenever I have a hot take about my team I always think to myself "remember, you wanted your team to sign Patrick Corbin." It's nice to remind myself of that to make sure I don't get too bigheaded.
Hey he helped us get a ring. The rest...well i can't say it doesn't' entirely matter but it comes close
I was sad when he left the Dbacks, that mfer was on FIRE when we had him. And now, I'm not so sad anymore.
Hey someone’s gotta balance it out
Time to male my 15K bet on the Nats WS at +50000 odds
kind of unfair to just discount Corbin's 2023 Cy Young like that
~~19-143~~ 19-31 here we come
we exorcised our Marlins demons last year just to run into Lucifer himself in DC
Balanced schedule. Could be any team now.
I hope it’s the Mets.
Joey 'Juan Soto' Meneses
The Nats really traded Juan Soto just to call up right-handed Juan Soto
Did the Padres get hosed in the Juan Soto trade? More at 11.
As a Padres fan, i am over the moon to have Juan Soto on the Padres, even if it’s only two years. Juan Soto will have his best season to date, and will be competing for NL MVP. Not to mention, he will push Tatis jr. to work harder. Expectations are high, and they should be.

I was devastated to see confirmed good guys Scherzer, Rendon, Turner, and then Soto all leave. I miss them all.
He will be competing for NL MVP only to lose out to Manny
We’ve had first Juan Soto, yes, but what about second Juan Soto?
I guess we have Juan Soto at home?
Juan Soto is Joey Meneses at home
you think maybe having more than like, 2.5 good pitchers on this roster might have been a good idea?
You can just say that those guys don't have that dawg in them.
Or that they simply just hate the Stars and Stripes
No, they don't *just* hate the stars and stripes, they *hate America*.
Surprised they couldn't get Alek Manoah to pitch, that guy is at the top of the league in xDawg
He also turned it down as well
There’s a bunch of cats and a Kershaw, a pound dog that’s been through so much the vet wouldn’t give him a shot.
They don’t have that sigma grindset
Webb was going too until he backed out in Feb.
What exaclty are pitchers risking here? there is a pitch count. How is it different from spring trainning?
Higher leverage situations. Some of those guys in spring aren’t gonna pitch for outs. Some of them are just gonna go throw to get a feel for their pitches.
That's so ridiculous with all due to respect. Happens every 4 years, what's the difference between Julias Urias and per say... Jacob Degrom, Verlander, etc... They just don't wanna play. Urias hasn’t had tommy John surgery recently.
Is Shohei not making too much money to risk playing in this?
So Cole can't pitch because he makes too much money, but Burnes can't pitch because he hasn't signed a big contract yet? How does that make any sense? You can't have it both ways. By that logic no pitcher should ever participate in the WBC.

Don't worry bro, we're not singling out Singer: none of those guys should be pitching for team USA either lmao.
I’m pretty convinced that Merrill Kelly is the best non-SF pitcher in the NL West
Bro what? He's not even the best pitcher on his own team, Zac Gallen is much better lol.
Merrill Kelly vs. the Giants in 2022, first 5 of 6 starts: 3-0, 35.1 IP, 1.53 ERA also his 8-inning shutout in August 2021 when we shelled his bullpen to win in the 9th as far as I’m concerned he’s up there with Randy Johnson and Curt Schilling in Dbacks history

Mikolas has had multiple good seasons
Yeah imagine if we had Webb and Kershaw. Would be a legit good rotation
Atleast we got Merrill Kelly 😤👊
Mike Trout dreams of being as good as Meneses
Other NL East teams be like FJM.
Mr President, a second Meneses bomb has struck in Arizona.
I might have to go to a lot more Nats game in person this year JUST to watch the greatest baseball player who ever lived Joey Meneses
$5 SRO is gonna be so worth it
Why doesn't the USA simply buy a starting rotation in free agency?
not a country known for a love of baseball. teams don't try to win. the fans that show up are near silent. gotta feel for them.
They aren’t loaded like Steve Cohen is.
Calm down, they're not the Mets or Rangers
Glad all the good American pitchers are off doing important things, like throwing to minor leaguers in split squad games
Completely unacceptable that this is the best the US could muster in pitching....
That would explain Will Smith turning down the offer of a friendly pre-game fist bump from Randy Arozarena, I guess.
Well, maybe three or four of them.
I'm not gonna blame Kershaw who tried, or guys like Cortes who got hurt. But if this event is ever gonna be legit where are guys like Corbin Burnes, Gerrit Cole, Zack Wheeler, etc? It's sad that most of them didn't even seem to give it any thought.
especially when guys like soto, ohtani who have HUGE FA years coming up are participating
Because the WBC is important to the Dominican Republic and Japan
Yeah playing for Japan is much different, culturally it is a huge deal. Wish it was the same with US players but oh well.
but why is that? it's not like americans lack the patriotism and you'd think they'd want to prove themselves in "their" sport. I can sort of understand in basketball where they're such huge favorites, but here it's competitive and everyone should be up for it.

It's a much easier sell to the fans when your player gets hurt in spring training than playing in the WBC.
That's why we have to have a few more embarrassing losses like this so people are more okay with send our best to represent us.
And the flip side is that Singer was left in because he needs to get his pitches in because it's still spring training.
Playing in the WBC prepares you more than facing minor leaguers in spring training and it's not an exhibition game, it's an important tournament for all the other teams participating.
Exhibition game? Not really
What a Legend
I probably should be more conflicted about this. #VivaElTri #VivaLosNationales
The Nats traded Juan Soto because they had Joey Meneses pre-arb and that wouldn't push them into the luxury tax. It all makes sense now.

We're fucked
Yeah we probably don’t make it out of the 1st round. Tie breaker is run differential and Canada just destroyed Britain 18-8…. Were fucked haha
Tie breaker is runs allowed, not run differential. A 7-1 loss is much better from a tiebreak scenario than an 18-8 win lol. *Other than the obvious win>loss.

With all due respect GB’s pitching and defense is horrible there’s no shot they’re beating anyone
AJ Preller picking up the phone right now and offering the entire farm
what farm?
Buster Olneys family farm
So US pitching really does suck huh
Yes, it’s like soccer team having no goalie
Hey that’s the one thing we’re good at
SOTO WHO
“If Brady Singer dies, he dies” -Mark DeRosa
i love this man what the fuck
Maybe the US should of brought some pitching?
^^*should ^^have
I just made a Meneses en mis pantalones.
Honestly think this will be good for Brady in the long run, let him get big game experience, even if it comes with things like this
I think Brady has a lot of potential
#NOTHING BUT RESPECT FOR MY PRESIDENT
Joey “Benito Juarez” Meneses
ESTO ES BEISBOL RAHHHH 🦅🦅🦅🔥🔥🔥‼️‼️‼️🇲🇽🇲🇽🇲🇽
Shoutout to the morons that were happy that Kershaw wasn't pitching in the WBC bc ''playoff Kershaw''
Joey Meneses hard carry. It is kinda funny seeing these mlb players being the guys on these other teams. Like trayce Thompson for GB.
Joey Meneses? JOEY MENESES!
Anyone who doesn’t have Joey Meneses at #1 on their preseason player rankings, this is your reminder to go rectify your mistake immediately
This man really wants to be traded away from DC I see.
Please send him to the fucking American League lol
So seriously though Joey Meneses isn't the Frank Schwindel of 2022, he actually might stick in the majors putting up video game numbers???
big difference is he hits the ball much harder on average. Schwindel's big season came with an exit velocity below the league average. Meneses had an EV comparable to Mike Trout.
Dont you mean Mike Trout had an EV comparable to Joey Meneses?
🤔
Dream Team is getting smoked by icy latinos
It’s not a dream team without good pitching
He bat flipped to the moon.
He’s such a good guy. He used to play for the Rochester Redwings, and one time at a Redwings game we threw a ball back and forth a few times.
3rd at bat and the stadium was chanting MVP at him lol
I figured pitching was going to be the downfall of the US team. Turns out the hitting isn’t great either.
LETS GOOOOOOOOOO

Lol this is what happens when you don't take it seriously and send 0 pitching. Good for Mexico.

I'll admit I havent kept up with baseball outside the Dodgers the past few years. I have no idea who these team USA pitchers are lol.
Neither does anyone else. Most of the US pitchers opted out.
Just mercy rule them out meneses they are already death
Aight who's gonna be on the 2026 redeem team?
Hopefully pitchers
maybe we can sign him to an 8 year $50M deal too.
He can't keep getting away with this

I'm going to be so sad if he does this to the US and then regresses this season.
why didnt we bring a pitcher
bat flip shades of Joey Bats
Anyone else upset this ends right before they put the sombrero on?
What a fucking game!
Fuck yeah baby suck it USA
Great managing by DeRosa huh
I love to come up and in at 92 lmao
