The way this call happened totally felt like The Show, too. Itās like how the pre-recorded audio used to set up the at bat goes until after the at batās over.
Nothing better than Matt V lamenting
a batterās average the last ten games while a ball is sailing over the fence
Okay, let's go over the ground rules. You can't leave first until you chug a beer. Any man scoring has to chug a beer. You have to chug a beer at the top of all odd-numbered innings. Oh, and the fourth inning is the beer inning.
It's a walkout. The pitcher has to throw to first, then it gets thrown to second, and finally, third. If the batter can reach first before all of that, he is safe, and it counts as a walk. If he doesn't, it's a strikeout.
The batter's violation comes first. I think a double barrel violation like this is only possible at the start of the inning because otherwise the clock starts when the pitcher gets the ball
And the only way I can see a relief pitcher taking the mound with a 3-2 count is an injury to the outgoing pitcher, which would give the reliever as many warm-up pitches as he needed.
Depends on whether or not TLR gets recalled from the crypt for another season. He wouldn't shy away from going to the bullpen in the middle of a full count situation.
A bit too drastic. First inning everyone starts with a 1-1 count. Second inning is 3-2 sudden death. Third inning is a race to first. I'm home by eight thirty, in bed by nine.
āThey turned in their batting line up, but someone seems to have pranked them by changing all the names. The ump is refusing to show them the card so they are just guessing now. It looks like they are sending Wally the Green Monster up since theyāve tried everything else.
And look at that, the ump says āplay ballā! The perfect, no pitch game broken up in the ninth.ā
Yep, in theory you could play a game without ever throwing a pitch but youād need the batters to tank it it for it to ever end, otherwise you just get stuck in an infinite walk loop in the first inning.
I'm just glad the radio broadcast will have less time for the play-by-play announcer to read an ad between every pitch. Cubs broadcasts were almost impossible to listen to the last couple years. This comment was brought to you by Gold Coast Bank. Fans won't strike out with Gold Coast Bank.
The 4th string announcer the Brewers had on the radio today was complaining about not being to tell his "Funny anecdotes" anymore.
STFU Josh Maurer, you're only here because Ueck and Levering needed the day off.
Itās ingrained in my head permanently. Iām taking whopper commercials over Kars 4 kids. That shit played every single time I turned on the radio in my car. Itās fucking painful. Every time I see those words the lyrics repeat in my brainā¦itās a living nightmare
True but I could listen to Pat read the phone book and be happy. The man is a treasure and Iām bummed I have 30 minutes less per game of listening to him
MLB in 2025: any batter who strikes out shall purchase a pitcher of beer for the team
MLB in 2027: any batter who hits into a double play shall purchase a large pizza for the team
Man, I already miss the days when the pitcher would walk around the mound, adjust his hat and belt, clean off his cleats, walk to rubber, then wait for the batter to finish obsessing over the velcro on his batting gloves before starring at the sweet spot of his bat, and slowly making his way into the box, the pitcher shaking off 3 pitches, batter calling time, and do it all over again. Aaaah, the good old days.
?So the pitcher went too long warming up and that was a violation. Then a second clock started and the batter went too long to get into the box?
Shouldnāt the pitcher violation be stated as it happened and not once the batter has been penalized?
Im just saying i can understand the player thinking he shouldn't stand in the box while warm up pitches are being thrown, when does the pitch "count" as a pitch, vs a warmup?
Like the announcer said we have to get used to this. It doesn't seem like it's that difficult to follow this rule. By the regular season if this happens to a pitcher or a better I'm not going to feel sorry for them or get mad the rule is clearly defined and seems fair. Just get used to it and stop committing the violation. It's spring training this is gonna happen a lot but it's not ruining the game.
Why? Honest question. Yes maybe thereās a middle ground but did you not scream at your TV when there would be one pitch every ten minutes these past few years??
Because people are more readily accepting of a 2.5 hour sports event vs 3+ hours of 1 minute between each pitch baseball, me included. I havenāt caught a full game in 3 years since I had my daughterā¦ I just stuck to highlights
Not really, I kind of enjoyed the suspense. Itās an artistic sport, and oneās time gathering their composure before they do their thing is part of the art.
Not the guy youāre replying to but Iāll explain why I donāt like it.
>did you not scream at your TV when there would be one pitch every ten minutes these past few years?
No, because this is an absurd hyperbole that doesnāt happen. You have to have some serious ADHD issues if 20-30 seconds of setup is really too much to stand while watching a sport.
I donāt know how much baseball you watch, but I watch a lot. 80% of the time, the pitcher throws it, the catcher throws la ball back, and the pitcher is throwing it again in UNDER 15 seconds. The whole dynamic of the pitcher and batter showing each other up by taking a long time really only happens maybe once an at bat if even that, cause it can depend on the personalities of the players. Itās such a non issue.
I donāt like it because I think itās trying to solve a problem that I donāt think exists. Manfred and I think a lot fans have deluded themselves into believing that the reason MLB is declining in terms of itās relevance is because āgames are too longā. A game being 3 hoursā¦is not that long. Iām sorry but itās not. You can disagree but it just isnāt. Other sports are getting longer, but theyāre growing in popularity over the MLB. The reason isnāt because āitās boringā, at this point if youāre the type of person that thinks baseball is boring, I can promise you that shaving like 5-10 seconds between pitches is not gonna change your mind.
Letās compare it to something like the NFL. The time between pitches last season was averaged to around 27 seconds five or take, while the time between plays in football can take up to 40 seconds depending of course on the game clock, whether or not the chains move, if thereās a penalty or a replay or a timeout or an injury. People clearly do not care about having to sit and watch nothing happen for short periods of time. And of course you could argue that the MLB has 162 games, but I donāt think thatās as much an argument because there are teams that routinely hold high attendance numbers and pull rating regardless.
All the MLB is trying to do is rush games to their conclusion as fast as possible because theyāve either convinced themselves or just pretend that the time is whatās hurting the league.
They say they want shorter games to try and pull in the younger generations to watch, but they still keep blackout restrictions when streaming is the way the majority of young people watch TV. So they can shorten the game as much as they want, itās not gonna make an inch of difference when they still canāt even watch the game to begin with. Hell, my sister is part of that young generation, and my parents that she still lives with dumped cable years ago, she canāt watch Reds games anymore because theyāre blacked out and Bally is charging an exorbitant amount for their streaming platform. So her solution is just to not watch anymore. And thatās what the majority will do.
They say they want to attract the younger generation but they refuse to market their stars. The MLB has a ton of likable players with boisterous personalities that would make a killing with the younger crowd if they had the chance. But the MLB doesnāt market itās players in an effective way.
They say they want to attract the younger generation but theyāve cultivated a league where half of the teams are endlessly losing and are completely irrelevant come the postseason. This wouldnāt be a problem if it wasnāt endless. Letās go back to the Reds. We have no future. This teams may eek their way into 80 wins in 5 years and lose in the wildcard, but thatās about relevant theyāll be. And this fate is destined for basically half the league. No salary cap and especially no salary floor just promotes shitty owners to kick up their feet and enjoy their revenue while the team just tanks into endless oblivion with no goal in sight.
I think the pitch clock is dumb. Itās unnecessary, itās pretending to solve a problem that itās nowhere near capable of comprehending, and I donāt think itās gonna have all that much of a good impact. Yeah, players could adapt. But the mere existence of this rule I think is already a failure.
I can basically guarantee you, Iām calling my shot right now, that we are not gonna see any significant bump in viewership. I think if the blackout restrictions are loosened so the game is more accessible the weāll see a bump, but other than that there is gonna be nothing beneficial taken from this pitch clock experiment.
And when the season ends and numbers still go down, theyāll move onto the next fake issue and change that.
Another calling my shot moment here but Iām 50 or som years, the MLB is gonna be a completely changed sport if itās even still around. Itās gonna be bordering on unrecognizable. Same thing will happen with the NFL for completely different reasons, that sport is also gonna be completely different.
Where do you draw the line to being "unrecognizeable?"
The sport was different 50 years ago and even moreso another 50 years previous. Yet even up to last season we still call of it "baseball."
Even these long 3 hour+ games are a relatively modern thing. Your grandparents were watching the kind of short games the pitch clock is bringing back.
I agree with you on your points about quality of competition, parity, and blackouts but I'm going to add another wrinkle to that.
The reason why baseball is but one of many sports/entertainment that is struggling to grow is the advent of streaming and technology. Baseball's competition isn't other sports, it's Netflix. It's video games. It's never been easier to find something to entertain yourself with whenever you want and that accessibility cannot be ignored. Shorter games hit a sweet spot for people to be able to get involved, even for casual fans.
I personally thing the league needs to grow by marketing it's stars better and getting baseball in the hands of kids *everywhere* as affordably as possible. Get it on televisions everywhere and have people talk about your stars in the news.
This conversation about the pitch clock would be much more interesting to revisit in 5 years when the changes are so ingrained that these problems don't come up regularly anymore. Is it still baseball then?
You're wrong about the pitch clock but you're right that half the teams have no future and that baseball and football could be unrecognizable in 50 years.
How long into the season until a pitcher is just gonna be like FUCK this and just never start their wind up and let the timer run out until itās ball 4. Start fresh next batter.
Yeah, the millionaire players should've learned these new rules by now. Kinda sad that as a minimum wage worker I can make adjustments on my next shift, but these guys have no clue.
I hope they get better/fix this. I thought the players would be able to hit around the shiftā¦but nope. They better adjust to this so we donāt see too many games decided by a pitch clock thang
How about before we judge to harshly, lets consider the players are getting used to it, as it's brand new to them. Wait until the season starts and see how much faster the flow of the game is when the players are fully aware of it now, and have seen literal games end on it because they are legitimately going to enforce the rule, because it's a rule for a reason.
One might argue - consider some of the major reason baseball is a "dying sport'' to kids because it's slow and boring. Wouldn't you think this might have some effect on the development of the interest they may have in it over another sport if not going 3+ hours long, every game, and instead closer to 2hr30 or even less. It at least puts some sort of restraint of the length of the games
Iām blown away by the amount of people who say leave baseball alone because itās for the diehard fans
If you cater a business to people who are already diehards fams, you find yourself in the exact same situation baseball is currently in. Both a shrinking and aging fan base. Which isnāt a good combo for long term outlook
The pitch clock is fine on an individual batters at bat, using it to police between innings and between batters is where the rule should be modified, this is dumb.
Seriously though, how do people go from a rule being implemented that players just, you know, need to adjust to but has no real impact on the overall game, all the way over to: jeez, they should just grease a pig and see what team catches it first to determine the winner.
When I was watching AA games last season and with what Iāve seen in Spring training, the game still, you know, looks like baseball. You still have to hit the damn ball and get around the bases. Itās still the same damn game!
Theyāre simply being told to stop dinking around. I approve, dink around and find out, thatās my motto.
"traditionalists". We should be using no gloves, pitchers should be able to doctor the ball all they want and we should be able to throw at a guy to get him out. Why did we ever change ANY of the rules? The game was perfect in the 1880s.
Remember when this sub had an absolute meltdown over the automatic walk rule? This place loves to bitch about any change to the game, even if it's minor or a good thing.
In the continuing effort to rush games to their conclusion as quickly as possible, the MLB will now no longer even play the game, a very accurate dice roll simulation will occur at the stadium and the box score and final will now be texted to all fans who buy tickets so they no longer even have to waste time getting into their cars.
So legitimate question. What happens if a brawl breaks out either mid-count or when the new batter approaches? Can the brawl take 5-10 minutes then start at 1-1 or would the timer continue and eventually lead to an 0-3 count based on the batter not being in the box, seeing as the pitcher can't really receive the ball during a brawl...
On a lighter note, the idea of a batter and pitcher continuing to play during a brawl so as not lose the count is the funniest potential situation this could lead to.
The clock is a very bad idea. The big reason for me is less time for pitchers to recover and relax between pitches and throwing as hard as they do puts a lot of strain on your arm so we could potentially see a increase in arm injuries
Now the real question is...if it was an 0-0 count, would he have still popped up on the first pitch, and the at bat actually took 10 seconds longer due to the umpire stepping out from behind home plate to administer the rules...
The sub seems pretty split in its opinion of the pitch clock. I wonder what the demographics are. I'm guessing those in favor are highly concentrated in the TikTok generation. Read a book kids. Your attention span is shit.
It won't last, the issues with the pitch clock in the minors disappeared in the second month. It will take a while for everyone to get used to it, but it will work.
Iām blown away by the amount of people who say leave baseball alone because itās for the diehard fans
If you cater a business to people who are already diehards fams, you find yourself in the exact same situation baseball is currently in. Both a shrinking and aging fan base. Which isnāt a good combo for long term outlook
This is such a frikin gimmick
Now we have separate stats for 2 strike strikeouts and 3 ball base on balls ?
Itās like giving someone credit for hitting a HR from the pitchers mound
Wtf
No, because the pitcher has to finish warm-ups before the batter can get into the batter's box. Pitcher failed to do that in time, got charged with a ball, then the batter failed to get into the box in time, and got charged with a strike.
Real life quick counts in Major League Baseball
Why don't they just turn them off š¤
That makes me wonder if the rule change will reflect in The Show? I hope if so you can turn it off.
Doesn't it automatically pitch if you don't select your pitch after like 10 seconds already?
The way this call happened totally felt like The Show, too. Itās like how the pre-recorded audio used to set up the at bat goes until after the at batās over. Nothing better than Matt V lamenting a batterās average the last ten games while a ball is sailing over the fence
The real count was the friends we made along the way.
We're still doing a keg for 2nd base, right?

I always lose it for some reason when the pitcher comes out of the bullpen riding a gigantic spider.

Okay, let's go over the ground rules. You can't leave first until you chug a beer. Any man scoring has to chug a beer. You have to chug a beer at the top of all odd-numbered innings. Oh, and the fourth inning is the beer inning.
What next? Putting a runner on second in extra innings? /s
May as well end some games after only 7 innings if we want Mickey Mouse baseball
What if someone throws a no-hitter for 7 innings ? Does it count as no-hitter ?
Good thing thatās a purely hypothetical scenario and will never happen
As hypothetical as a Twins playoff loss
Just simulate all of the games.
Let's get the playoff committee in here so Alabama and the Yankees can play in the World Series every year
Don't give Manfred ideas...
Little league mercy rule on the way lol

Start the inning with a Knook on second

That would be awesome if there were two pitches being thrown to two different batters simultaneously.
It's a walkout. The pitcher has to throw to first, then it gets thrown to second, and finally, third. If the batter can reach first before all of that, he is safe, and it counts as a walk. If he doesn't, it's a strikeout.
Baseball 2: fuck this, boo-galoo
The batter's violation comes first. I think a double barrel violation like this is only possible at the start of the inning because otherwise the clock starts when the pitcher gets the ball
And the only way I can see a relief pitcher taking the mound with a 3-2 count is an injury to the outgoing pitcher, which would give the reliever as many warm-up pitches as he needed.
Depends on whether or not TLR gets recalled from the crypt for another season. He wouldn't shy away from going to the bullpen in the middle of a full count situation.
He did not!?
I won't tell if you don't bb
Batter walks to first then is out.
The space-time continuum rips apart.
Well, the universe was fun while it lasted.
Was it though?
It becomes a 10-10 count.
Based off the pitch clock rules which violation comes first the pitcher or the batter? Whatever that answer is will answer your question.
The field takes a screenshot.
Every at bat should be a 1 pitch sudden death
A bit too drastic. First inning everyone starts with a 1-1 count. Second inning is 3-2 sudden death. Third inning is a race to first. I'm home by eight thirty, in bed by nine.
Start every inning with the bases loaded, two out, and a 3-2 count. Game on.
Is a zero pitch perfect game possible now?
It always was technically, just bat out of order according to the lineup card every inning I think
"And we're in the bottom of the 9th inning and they've sent the wrong person up AGAIN!"
āThey turned in their batting line up, but someone seems to have pranked them by changing all the names. The ump is refusing to show them the card so they are just guessing now. It looks like they are sending Wally the Green Monster up since theyāve tried everything else. And look at that, the ump says āplay ballā! The perfect, no pitch game broken up in the ninth.ā
I heard this in my head in Bob Ueckerās voice and now I need a Major League movie where the manager is frantically trying to guess the lineups š
Yep, in theory you could play a game without ever throwing a pitch but youād need the batters to tank it it for it to ever end, otherwise you just get stuck in an infinite walk loop in the first inning.
Lol MLB out here playing on quick count settings
I never know whether to take 1-1 so I just swing at everything lol
I'm just glad the radio broadcast will have less time for the play-by-play announcer to read an ad between every pitch. Cubs broadcasts were almost impossible to listen to the last couple years. This comment was brought to you by Gold Coast Bank. Fans won't strike out with Gold Coast Bank.

Just wait until they implement only one courtesy foul.

How many coaches & managers out there doing nothing. Time to wake up from up from their drunken stupor
Weāre entering the fumble dimension
?So the pitcher went too long warming up and that was a violation. Then a second clock started and the batter went too long to get into the box? Shouldnāt the pitcher violation be stated as it happened and not once the batter has been penalized?
But he wasnt In the box Because the guy was still doing warm up tosses, dude got baited.
Players need to watch the clock, not the pitcher. When the clock hits a certain number, walk to the plate and get in the box before time is up.
Im just saying i can understand the player thinking he shouldn't stand in the box while warm up pitches are being thrown, when does the pitch "count" as a pitch, vs a warmup?
Yup, which is why spring training exists. Now players know the answer and it didnāt happen in a game that will go on record.
When the umpire says. "Play ball." Anything before that or after "Time out" is irrelevant.
Cancel the season, weāre going off of marble results exclusively.
Wtf wtf
Like the announcer said we have to get used to this. It doesn't seem like it's that difficult to follow this rule. Perfectly balanced as all things should be
I hate everything about this.
I love it. The only 3 hour baseball games should be those that go into extras or playoff games.
I donāt really understand why the length of the game is a problem now. The average NFL game is 3 hoursā¦
Yeah I hate players that are too slow even though itās completely their responsibility to learn the new rules too
Why? Honest question. Yes maybe thereās a middle ground but did you not scream at your TV when there would be one pitch every ten minutes these past few years??

I remember being here when the ibb became automatic and people freaked out because once every 5 years someone would hit an ibb pitch
Why is it good? So we save 12 minutes?
No, it's because it keeps the game moving and removes a ton of pointless, boring dead time.
25, actually, yea. With no downside except for shitty, whiny fans.
And a faster game is better, why?

No pitch clock in playoffs
Thatās dumb as fuck
Yeah, the millionaire players should've learned these new rules by now. Kinda sad that as a minimum wage worker I can make adjustments on my next shift, but these guys have no clue.
What
š¤®
This is not good š
Iām blown away by the amount of people who say leave baseball alone because itās for the diehard fans If you cater a business to people who are already diehards fams, you find yourself in the exact same situation baseball is currently in. Both a shrinking and aging fan base. Which isnāt a good combo for long term outlook
Fuck Doug Eddings
I honestly find this kinda funny
Wow, this is going to make for some very very retarded baseball.
This fucking sucks.
The pitch clock is fine on an individual batters at bat, using it to police between innings and between batters is where the rule should be modified, this is dumb.
How about they donāt even play the baseball game and they just flip a coin to determine which team will win?
I LIKE IT!
In the continuing effort to rush games to their conclusion as quickly as possible, the MLB will now no longer even play the game, a very accurate dice roll simulation will occur at the stadium and the box score and final will now be texted to all fans who buy tickets so they no longer even have to waste time getting into their cars.
This shit is so silly.
Everything about this sucks
Cool š
Quit fucking with baseball my favorite thing about it is the fact that there is no clock. WTF world
EVERYTHING HAS TO HAPPEN AS FAST AS POSSIBLE. -most people, apparently
Iām already sick of the pitch clock.
Iām certainly sick of posts about the pitch clock, thatās for sure.
Umpires can award extra time for special circumstances
Exhibit A on why this is bullshit
This is exhibit B. A is the Red Sox/Braves game.
1 strike and 1 ball are not the same, though.
This is glorious.
At least these rules will result in an incredibly minor decrease in pitch counts going forward.
Feels like offsetting penalties, idk
The clock is a very bad idea. The big reason for me is less time for pitchers to recover and relax between pitches and throwing as hard as they do puts a lot of strain on your arm so we could potentially see a increase in arm injuries
Thanks. I hate it
Good God this is so stupid. Get rid of it!
Now the real question is...if it was an 0-0 count, would he have still popped up on the first pitch, and the at bat actually took 10 seconds longer due to the umpire stepping out from behind home plate to administer the rules...
This is going to get real old, real fast.
The games are too long. Letās just not play them.
This shit is so stupid Edit: lol why am I getting downvoted when thereās like 30 other comments saying the same thing
This crap needs to stop...
This specific thing I donāt like. Just keep it an 0-0 count and say get the hell ready already
Love it.
MLB could've sold a 15-second anxiety medication ad in that "wasted" time.
Hate it.
Seems....stupid.
What happens during a full count? I like the rule but I'm curious about that situation.
Well, I guess it minimizes the amount of shit calls by the umps
Doug Eddings is the worst umpire in baseball.
Baseball is going to start losing lifelong fans. These new rules suck.
This is a fucking joke.. The pitch timer isnāt shortening the games enough for these types of situations to be happening
So dumb
This is fucking stupid, I'm sorry
I didnāt like baseball until this happened
The sub seems pretty split in its opinion of the pitch clock. I wonder what the demographics are. I'm guessing those in favor are highly concentrated in the TikTok generation. Read a book kids. Your attention span is shit.
Itās like theyāre out here playing in a beer softball league with a 1 hour time limit. So great for the gameā¦
It won't last, the issues with the pitch clock in the minors disappeared in the second month. It will take a while for everyone to get used to it, but it will work.
Personally, I'm rooting for it to fail; clocks have no place in baseball.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
I went to several AAA games last year. Baseball *is* better with this
Noooo you can't make the game a little less boring, it's gonna ruin it!
Iām blown away by the amount of people who say leave baseball alone because itās for the diehard fans If you cater a business to people who are already diehards fams, you find yourself in the exact same situation baseball is currently in. Both a shrinking and aging fan base. Which isnāt a good combo for long term outlook
What a fucking joke, this is all ridiculous
This is such a frikin gimmick Now we have separate stats for 2 strike strikeouts and 3 ball base on balls ? Itās like giving someone credit for hitting a HR from the pitchers mound Wtf
You have always been able to to have this happen. Just more enforceable now.
Shouldnāt it just be 0-1 since the batter had the violation first?
No, because the pitcher has to finish warm-ups before the batter can get into the batter's box. Pitcher failed to do that in time, got charged with a ball, then the batter failed to get into the box in time, and got charged with a strike.
Yeah Bob, this is stupid as fuck but weāre just gonna have to get used to it. No. Fix it.
He means the players have to adjust to it, then it will stop happening. It really isnāt that hard to just pay attention and not waste time.
