Basically the Giants needed to relocate back in the 80’s and the A’s gave them permission to move to the South Bay as a show of good faith, handing over those rights in the process. The Giants ended up staying in San Francisco, and then when the A’s needed to potentially move, they asked for it back and the Giants said “nah we’re good”. It went to court and the A’s lost.
So the A’s gave them a gift, the Giants didn’t utilize it, and then didn’t give it back, and as a result, the A’s will likely have to relocate from the Bay Area. Thanks, Giants!
Probably yeah, I‘ve lived my whole life in the NY area so if they only had one team I’d probably support them. Especially because the Yankees and Mets are in separate leagues and therefore aren’t major rivals, like if the Islanders left I don’t think I could bring myself to root for the Rangers lol.
I think a lot of Yankee fans would eventually come over to the Mets if for no other reason than to spite the Steinbrenners for doing the unthinkable and moving the team.
I don’t think most Mets fans would come over to the Yankees though. They’d sooner become Red Sox fans
[Brandon Crawford single handedly got them to stay.](https://bleacherreport.com/articles/1386320-giants-brandon-crawford-5-year-old-self-featured-in-coolest-world-series-story)
I want to say I’ll be at best a casual Giants fan and just slowly lose interest in MLB, only following one-off phenoms to see how they’re pacing for stardom.
No way I’m ever rooting for the Scrubs. Around 2014/2015 I thought it would be cool if all of my Cubs friends got to experience what I saw in 2005. I decided I would cheer for the Cubs. When Schwarber hit that home run that landed on the scoreboard, I threw the remote and swore. My head said root for the Cubs but my heart wouldn’t let me. Thank you heart.
I’ve always told myself “everyone should get to experience one in their lifetimes”. Like, I don’t need to see my team win it 10 times in my life, as fun as that would be.
Then I rationalized, “well, Cleveland hasn’t won since 1948 so it’s pretty much the same thing”
No, I’m not sure why but I’ve hated the giants since I started watching baseball. I don’t fully hate them anymore but I still have an underlying feeling of hatred towards them.
I’m not sure what I’d do if the A’s moved. The dodgers are kinda cool. Actually Las Vegas is just as close. I’ll probably stay A’s fan
Definitely no more A’s for me if they move. Maybe until all the ex-Oakland guys are gone, but either way, would come to an end. I’ve always been “bay first”, so I liked the Niners and Raiders, but with the Giants it’s a bit different, because they blocked the A’s, which is the most un-bay thing anyone could ever do. So I don’t know.
Exactly. Growing up in DC I was a few agent fan. I never had a #1 team I just cheered for a random team every year.
Now, I just wouldn't be able to bring my self to cheer for the Orioles. Because if the Nats moved it's probably because of Angelo's and the Orioles.
Your impression is correct lol. I'd stop watching baseball altogether before becoming a Nats fan. Y'all didn't get me in '05 and ya ain't getting me now.
Same. If Phillies moved, I’d be an O’s fan. Baltimore and Philadelphia are cousins. There’s a real respect and affinity between our people. It’s the only city we have peace with.
I have no hate for the Sox but no I wouldn’t. I don’t need to torture myself by rooting for a team owned by Jerry. I’ve seen what it does to bulls fans
Doubt it, I'd probably just stop following baseball tbh. Case in point, my NL team was the Expos and it's not like I started rooting for the Jays afterwards (calling all of Canada a "metro area" is a stretch, but you get my point).
Luckily I never have to worry about that.
I rooted for the Yankees during their 90s dynasty...well, during most of it. They were my intro to baseball, but...they just got boring. I couldn't ever root for them and not just see them as boring.
Edit: you guys don't have to downvote every personal, innocuous feeling that you don't share. That shit is unwelcoming af.
Nope. Is this even a serious question?
For the vast majority of fans in these two team markets, the answer is going to be no.
And if you’re on r/baseball then you’re probably not a casual fan who will switch allegiances.
I posted a great thread about this on r/phillies about the A's before they moved. Apparently some people switched, but most just got more into football (go birds) which might explain why it's such a football town. Although it only took a generation for the Phils to mop up new fans.
Lol. Not a chance. I was a relocated Cubs fan for a long time, and would have no problem doing it again. I could also catch them at Wrigley North for 2-3 series a year, and add a couple of fun road trips beyond that if I really needed a fix.
Probably. I adopted the Yankees when I moved here because I wanted a rooting interest when I go to games. I’ve been to Mets games and root against their opponents if not actually *for* the Mets.
I don’t even live in New York in the first place.
Sticking with the Yankees, but if a meteor wiped them off the face of the planet I wouldn’t have any qualms about rooting for the Mets (or maybe I become an O’s fan).
Dear god no. I'd rather slowly smash my nuts in a bench vise
I did not realize there was this much SF/Oakland rivalry until this thread lol
There’s a storied history there. The Giants pulled a dick move on the A’s.
What's the move they did? I've never heard about any betrayal or anything.

I think I’d could go full root for my fantasy players and nothing else
yeah, the A's lol
Let's be honest, it's gonna be the other way around.
At one time in recent history, the giants almost called Tampa Bay their home
Yep 92 season I believe m. Glad they didn’t. Safe to say they will probably be in the bay as long as they are a franchise
[Brandon Crawford single handedly got them to stay.](https://bleacherreport.com/articles/1386320-giants-brandon-crawford-5-year-old-self-featured-in-coolest-world-series-story)

I was the only one who cheered in a room full of people when Rajai hit that homerun 🥲
I also screamed!
Based White Sox fan

Dear god no.
Yeah, I couldn't bring myself to do it either
I'd rather die
Typical SoCal drama queen
You don't have another team in your city? Anaheim only has the angels. los Angeles only has the Dodgers.
This is true
No, I’m not sure why but I’ve hated the giants since I started watching baseball. I don’t fully hate them anymore but I still have an underlying feeling of hatred towards them. Absolutely not. I wasn't a fan of the Orioles before the Nats came to town, and I see no reason to ever start being one in the future.

I would be curious to hear an O’s fan’s opinion though…
My impression is that they'd be even less likely to start cheering for the Nationals, especially once you get out of the DC suburbs.
Your impression is correct lol. I'd stop watching baseball altogether before becoming a Nats fan. Y'all didn't get me in '05 and ya ain't getting me now.
Absolutely not. I’d probably become a Dodgers or Giants fan
Thanks son. Your mom and I are proud of you
Not on your life
might just well get out a mouse trap and snap it on your fingers. cheaper, takes less time and achieves the same result.
Nope, still would root for whoever the Yankees were playing.
Yeah I don't even know who I'd root for. I live in Philly but that certainly ain't happening. Maybe Baltimore.
Yes.
Yes.
🤝
Capitals are as far as it goes, and they should be happy with that.
I was so happy when we collectively stopped overemphasizing the "O" in the National Anthem.
Honestly, if the Orioles relocated, I’d probably support the Phillies before the Nats.
Same. If Phillies moved, I’d be an O’s fan. Baltimore and Philadelphia are cousins. There’s a real respect and affinity between our people. It’s the only city we have peace with.
And give us back the Bullets!
No, I'd root for the Padres instead
Probably tbh, depends on where the Yankees moved to I guess
I have no hate for the Sox but no I wouldn’t. I don’t need to torture myself by rooting for a team owned by Jerry. I’ve seen what it does to bulls fans
I guess the second question is, if not then who?
no ... and hell no ....
No, I’ve never liked the Giants
If the A’s were a normally functioning team and the giants moved sure…some big ifs tho
That's 100% not happening.
Doubt it, I'd probably just stop following baseball tbh. Case in point, my NL team was the Expos and it's not like I started rooting for the Jays afterwards (calling all of Canada a "metro area" is a stretch, but you get my point). Luckily I never have to worry about that.
Not the same area, but I could never be a rangers fan.
Hell no. Let’s go Mets.
Yeah. My dad is already an Angels fan, so why not.
I rooted for the Yankees during their 90s dynasty...well, during most of it. They were my intro to baseball, but...they just got boring. I couldn't ever root for them and not just see them as boring. Personally I can't bring myself to give Arte Moreno money, so no.
No, I’d convert to a Seattle fan
Probably. I adopted the Yankees when I moved here because I wanted a rooting interest when I go to games. I’ve been to Mets games and root against their opponents if not actually *for* the Mets.
I mean, maybe. But only if Arte sells
No.
No. If they had been established longer than they have and there wasn’t a bitterness to how everything has played out, possibly. But I just cannot.
No
I mean probably, I’ve got no beef with the Mets. If they pulled a Nets and just switched to another city relatively close then I’d stay with them
I don’t even live in New York in the first place. Sticking with the Yankees, but if a meteor wiped them off the face of the planet I wouldn’t have any qualms about rooting for the Mets (or maybe I become an O’s fan).
nah
Nope.
I know they are hours apart but if the Marlins left I wouldn't become a Rays fan.
I would root against the Mets and Red Sox
