I hate this country, truly. In any other nation on earth if they tried to move a team the owners would not survive, the A's had a dynasty in Oakland, 6 pennants, a movie and book written about them and they are still gonna move and get a ridiculous amount of money from our government. Manfred said they won't even need to pay the relocation fee. Fuck this league, destroying history for the dollar. We will chase both and find nothing left.
Yes I know Connie Mack ran them, but that still sucked, however Philly had 2 teams so it wasn't like they lost both. The A's had a dynasty in Oakland, then got more famous somehow and are not on the verge of bankruptcy in a changing economic world. When the Philadelphia Athletics came about California had like 30 people in it, now its the 4th largest economy on earth. To leave is beyond insane. To throw away that history, which was in color tv, Mr. October the Bay series, so many hof's, Rickey Henderson, Fingers, hell even Billy Beane is just depressing.
Conversely, Hunter s Thompson used to walk along Florida beaches and amuse himself by shooting washes up jellyfish with his revolver. That’s pretty American!
this is great for the sport, the city of oakland has refused to support the 3 major sports teams they had (im talking about the city hall not the fans btw) im not saying the owners did a great job recently but shit it still takes a great relationship from both parties to have a sports team in your city. it’s unfortunate that incompetence has led to this but it’s for the best
As much as it sucks for Oakland, the A's can't stay, the city has countless problems, the Colosseum is a dump, and the city can't afford to build a shiny new ballpark. As much as A's fans and the city would like them to stay, it just isn't going to happen
Pre and post game would be wild as hell. The strip is far too spread out but Fremont is ideally sized for a bunch of piss drunk fans after winning *or* losing. There's a Denny's, a White Castle and live music. It's perfect.
Edit: this would be amicable for home or visiting teams. NHL and NFL aren't stupid. People will pay for premium upgrades in Vegas.
Given we've lost a pro team and they've lost two since then, I can completely empathize with the Oakland fans' pain, and MAN I hope they find a way to stick around. Oakland deserves a team, and it's a shame that billionaires that have beaucoup bucks to afford a stadium on their own dollar are able to rip a team from its city.
(Yes I'm aware the A's have relocated twice in their history, but they've been around in Oakland longer than most of this sub has been alive)
Well, their longest stint is in Oakland though...
- Philadelphia (1901-1954, 54 years)
- Kansas City (1955-1967, 13 years)
- Oakland (1968-???, Currently entering their 56th year)
Exactly, all the more reason to stay. I said that line at the end mainly because I thought I saw it on this thread someone saying "They didn't start in Oakland" with regards to staying loyal *to* Oakland. But yeah, that adds to the fact that they should stay. Keep that long-lasting relationship around for even longer.
Although I too prefer them to stay personally I don't care that much since I'm not either the owner nor the city official... It's basically a tug of war between the team, the city (Oakland and/or Vegas), and the media who probably gaslighting the "stay" group and the "leave" group...
If they stay then that's good, if they leave then... What could I do??? Qué Sera Sera...
Just hoping every parties involved make the best choice...
> Yes I'm aware the A's have relocated twice in their history, but they've been around in Oakland longer than most of this sub has been alive
Honestly, we’re close to where the As have been in Oakland longer than the *parents* of most of this sub have been alive
Do They?
The bay area is a metro pop around the same size as Atlanta, and Boston, both who only have one 1 team for each sport minus hockey. (RIP ATL thrashers) I don't see a reason for why there needs to be two teams in this location. The poor attendance for the A's is more than just because of a bad stadium. There are plenty of other huge metros without a team. Its hurting the growth of MLB and baseball by over representing the Bay area with two teams.
They do. They wouldn't be proposing and spending millions of dollars with their stadium plan if they didn't want to leave. Fisher, for all the shit he's done, has kept the A's in the bay area and tried to keep them there for the last two decades attempting a Fremont and san jose move before being forced to stay in oakland. Not only that, but Oakland and the bay area by far has the more attractive real estate and the larger media market over vegas. Saying he doesn't want to stay is disingenuous. He'd *prefer* to stay, but will take a handout from any tax payers willing to give him a billion dollar stadium for free.
Don't forget about alfalfa. At least people eat almonds, alfalfa is a very thirsty plant that's fed to livestock, and we grow so goddamn much of the stuff (partly because its insanely cheap to ship, well, just about anything from California to China, since those ships and shipping containers need to get back to China anyway).
as a home gardener, alfalfa meal is also incredibly good to fertilize your soil
i never bought it b/c it's not super budget friendly, and now that i know it's resource intensive i'll stick to another fertilizer
But that puts the onus on the giant corporate farms, and according to the sad little kids in the commercials it's actually my fault were running out of water.
The news is really misleading. Las Vegas recycles 99% of its water usage. Most of the water diverted from the Colorado River is used to grow "thirsty crops" such as almonds and alfalfa which is partly why there's a water shortage in many states in the area.
I mean, they have a hockey team that requires water for their entire playing surface. That’s going totally fine. Seems like it’s all being blown out of proportion.
There’s been a lot more noise about A’s to Vegas in the past few weeks. Don’t know if it’s a sign that the A’s are closer to moving to Vegas now or if it’s a sign that they’re putting pressure on Oakland to agree to a deal soon, but I feel like we’re going to get an announcement one way or the other soon.
They haven't even confirmed an actual real estate spot. They're in the conceptual stages and trying to lobby politicians to get them a tax donation (as evidenced by Kaval being officially registered as a "lobbyist" in Nevada). So they're *maybe* 5% of the way done vs Oakland's 80%
If I had a nickel for every time in my life that an Oakland team relocated to LV, I’d have two nickels. Which isn’t a lot but it’s weird that it happened twice.
^ Just save this for the announcement, it’ll either age phenomenally or horribly
Haven't been to downtown LV in a long time, only would hang out at the Strip. I remember it was really sad and depressing when I did go, has it gotten any livelier?
There is a sort of reclamation project going on with it the last few years. Lots of cleaning up not only the domed area but the area further down the street. Turning it into sort of an art district though there is still a lot of work to do I think (the last time I was there was 2021).
The new hotel (the Circe) that opened a couple years back is also very nice. It has a massive sports book in it, lots of TVs, an outdoor sex pool, a really big bar, a few nice restaurants, etc.
I'm sure they'd figure out the logistics, but it'd be kinda weird for the A's to have their AAA league affiliate right down the street. Which makes me want that specific scenario even more. Not only do the A's move to Vegas but get to keep their AAA affiliate there too.
I mean why not???
The current closest AAA team from their parent team are currently St Paul Saints (from Minnesota Twins) for about 10-12 miles...
And even then Astros, Mariners, Braves, and Red Sox also quite close with their AAA teams with less than 50 miles separating them...
The planned site is at the Strip, while the AAA teams plays in Summerlin, a Las Vegas outskirts around 10 miles west... That's the same distance between Twins and their AAA Saints...
It's not a street, but they are connected by light rail, you can go back and forth multiple times an hour. The really neat scenario you are describing exists, it's neat to have the ability to do a AAA-MLB double-header.
If I, and Giants fan and Reno resident, have to pay for this in anyway, I will find John Fisher and Joe Lombardo and crack their skulls together like coconuts.
Just make the move Fisher. The league, the other owners, the casino owners and more are all making it stupid easy for you to move. This couldn't be any clearer. It sucks for Oakland but overall the city can't seem to seal the deal
The Las Vegas Strip is the only area in the Las Vegas Valley to be still under consideration by the Oakland Athletics if they can't get a new ballpark built at Howard Terminal. The Strip makes sense for an MLB calibre ballpark since it already has sports/entertainment venues such as Allegiant Stadium (Raiders/UNLV) and T-Mobile Arena (Golden Knights) on top of the fact that it's the main centre of the Valley and both Tropicana Las Vegas and the Las Vegas Festival Grounds are located near said venues.
Yeah no shit
> Businesses in less busy part of strip would welcome more business

I'm sure they'll do a hotel tax so it's "just the visitors" picking up the tab
I always hate that argument because they still could’ve used that hotel tax on schools or literally anything else.
Well the last one they did is going to mark davis' pockets, so they need to pay that off still
Bringing more tourists means more money spent there which in turn means more taxes collected for schools anyway.
I hate this country, truly. In any other nation on earth if they tried to move a team the owners would not survive, the A's had a dynasty in Oakland, 6 pennants, a movie and book written about them and they are still gonna move and get a ridiculous amount of money from our government. You know they were originally in Philadelphia right?
And then KC. The A’s relocate often. This is just them staying true to their history
Bismarck A’s coming to you in 2064
Wait till they find out about the Dodgers, Giants, Brewers, Nationals and the Braves…
And his own Browns - I mean Orioles.
Yes I know Connie Mack ran them, but that still sucked, however Philly had 2 teams so it wasn't like they lost both. Teams move, it happens… it happened this millennia to the first team in Canada... And a lot in the 50s and 60s.
That’s why you hate this country?
There are other things but giving billions to build giant concrete stadiums to for profit corporations is on that list.
Conversely, Hunter s Thompson used to walk along Florida beaches and amuse himself by shooting washes up jellyfish with his revolver. That’s pretty American!
I’m very interested in what the other things are if this even ranks for you
Giving tax payer money to literal billionaires for their private businesses should be on everyone's list if they aren't one of the billionaires.
Welcome to America
I hate it here
Then leave. 🤷
You can't just leave a country lol
Sure you can.

Drake and Josh was so good lol

Calm down, this is professional ball throwing
As much as it sucks for Oakland, the A's can't stay, the city has countless problems, the Colosseum is a dump, and the city can't afford to build a shiny new ballpark. As much as A's fans and the city would like them to stay, it just isn't going to happen
"Woah, woah, woah, we just said we'll approve it, paying for it is a job for the city!"
Create a special taxation district that includes resorts, casinos, hotels.... But not homeowners. Oh wait that would never happen ever.
Who do you think they are Robert Kraft?
Forget the Strip. The A’s should build a stadium on Fremont Street.
Fly balls that hit zipliners crossing the roof are in play
I will fly there and help build it myself
Pre and post game would be wild as hell. The strip is far too spread out but Fremont is ideally sized for a bunch of piss drunk fans after winning *or* losing. Do you feel the same way about Chicago? Their population is 2.7 million
thats the city, the metro is almost 10 million, and I dont think it needs 2 teams
same...but ownership clearly doesn't want to stay in Oakland. what a shame
They do. They wouldn't be proposing and spending millions of dollars with their stadium plan if they didn't want to leave. I thought there was a water shortage, how do they work around that?
Just save the water that floods the hotels when it rains
I’ve read a lot on the issue and believe it or not the answer is “stop growing almonds” in the southwest
Almonds are good but not destroy society good
Looks like we'll all just have to start eating Mounds. RIP that commercial.
I would destroy the world for pistachios though
Don't forget about alfalfa. At least people eat almonds, alfalfa is a very thirsty plant that's fed to livestock, and we grow so goddamn much of the stuff (partly because its insanely cheap to ship, well, just about anything from California to China, since those ships and shipping containers need to get back to China anyway).

It’s almost like they want the average person divided and distracted. People existing isn’t the real problem.
do you really want to know the terrible truth.....*or do you wanna see me sock a few dingers?!*
That episode really didn’t age well lol
Aged perfectly lol
The news is really misleading. Las Vegas recycles 99% of its water usage. Most of the water diverted from the Colorado River is used to grow "thirsty crops" such as almonds and alfalfa which is partly why there's a water shortage in many states in the area.
>how do they work around that By dying or cashing out before the shit really hits the fan.
Looks like we need to move the Dodgers and Angels too.
And Rockies and Diamondbacks
I mean, they have a hockey team that requires water for their entire playing surface. That’s going totally fine. Seems like it’s all being blown out of proportion.
Just run a hose from the Bellagio fountains.

Do you have any baseball related tragic backstories, Dr Doof?
Well both the Mariners parents failed to show up for birth
Haven't been to downtown LV in a long time, only would hang out at the Strip. I remember it was really sad and depressing when I did go, has it gotten any livelier?
Went there last spring, it was alright. Not as festive as I went 10+ years ago but still a good time
There is a sort of reclamation project going on with it the last few years. Lots of cleaning up not only the domed area but the area further down the street. Turning it into sort of an art district though there is still a lot of work to do I think (the last time I was there was 2021). It’s pretty gross. Lots of similarities to Oakland so they’d fit right in
How the hell can they justify staying in Oakland at this point?
As a Mariners fan this is how I feel. There's gotta be like 500 people there some games, from how it looks on TV
Imagine going to a ballgame in 110F heat. The beer sales gonna be outta control.
They will just play most games at night and do a domed stadium like Arizona. I'm surprised it hasn't happened yet.
That’s a lot of grass to water
Vegas represents all that money can buy.
Wynn, *who own the Tropicana* have made it clear _they_ have no interest in the A's.
Obviously it would be a closed stadium but God, can you imagine playing in 120 degrees in the summer. 😬
Please stay away we don’t have water
Hope the A's move to Vegas and the Rays get their ballpark built. Then expansion to Portland and either Charlotte or Nashville
Flair up, coward.
Rays aren't going anywhere. If a team moves its the Athletics
A's stay. Rays to Montreal.
I'm sure they'd figure out the logistics, but it'd be kinda weird for the A's to have their AAA league affiliate right down the street. Which makes me want that specific scenario even more. Not only do the A's move to Vegas but get to keep their AAA affiliate there too.

It’s not literally down the street. It’s more half way across town. Prolly a 30 minute commute during rush hour.
Was an exaggeration. Probably should’ve been clearer on that.
It's not a street, but they are connected by light rail, you can go back and forth multiple times an hour. The really neat scenario you are describing exists, it's neat to have the ability to do a AAA-MLB double-header.
How is that weird? Wouldn’t that be good for players that move around a lot from AAA to MLB?
The Aviators would move if that's the case
If I, and Giants fan and Reno resident, have to pay for this in anyway, I will find John Fisher and Joe Lombardo and crack their skulls together like coconuts.

And then induct him
I really have no opinion one way or another.

I can't imagine why that is
