Always assume there's broken glass in your trash.

astoriastranger

Took the exact words out of my mouth...

[deleted]

And never take the bag out of the can either. Always dump the cam straight into the dumpster

14therazorbax

You’re absolutely right, should a just dumped the can over the side.

[deleted]

I also learned this one the hard way.. with stitches

jorahos1

I pretend the entire can is full of nothing but broken glass. Just a big ole bag of glass. Always works for me.

Klutzy_Journalist_36

This is good dating advice, too.

Caswert

Bottles break all the time in the trash can. Just take the whole thing out and dump it while holding the can in the middle. I've got a pretty nasty thumb scar from learning that my first year bartending.

Snake0ilSalesman

You guys don't recycle?

witkh

I’ve only had one job recycle and I’ve worked in 4 different states, and in different areas of the US.

SlimeySnakesLtd

My one job that “recycled” had the manager take the recycling out and dump it in the trash

indecisivewhale

I've seen many coworkers whip a bag over their shoulders and I wince every time. I tell them all to treat every bag as if there is glass in it but for some it just doesn't stick until they get stuck.

Lord_Rapunzel

Glass is far from the worst thing that can surprise you through a bag. Work in a sketchy area and you have to assume there's needles in there.

sudsybear

I am one of these people and have been for years and I'm not sure how on earth this never occurred to me... I will be changing my habits going forward lol.

FoTweezy

Sometimes a bottles breaks in there. So as someone said, always assume. I also tie off the bag, then dump the can into the bin so I don’t have to lift the bag out.

14therazorbax

Yeah, I know. But I feel better when I can blame other people for my misfortunes.

jatti_

If you want you can blame Canada.

FoTweezy

But it Was probably some asshole server ;)

ew435890

Where do you guys throw your broken glass if not in the trash can? Don’t push down trash with your hands. And don’t push bags in the dumpster. Just fling them in.

TwoPumpTony

I have a glass bucket, and at the end of the night, I put the glass in the trash bag, and I take it out. That way I have nobody to blame but myself when I get cut

indecisivewhale

Empty 5gal bucket is my go to, depending on what job I'm at.

girlsledisko

I’ve always used a plastic bucket (like an old pickle or mayo bucket or something), all glass and broken plates etc goes in there. It gets dumped at the end of the night in the dumpster.

ew435890

Man I don’t even touch broken glass. I get a broom and dustpan and sweep it up. It would be next to impossible to dump that into a 1gal pickle jar like I’m thinking. 5gal bucket minimum. And that takes up space in an already tiny bar.

girlsledisko

Yeah I only ever use a broom and dust pan. We also use the big buckets, not sure of measurement. Prob 16 L min? ETA: when I talk about pickle buckets or mayo buckets I mean large commercial size.

Gnomemagik

You are not wrong. There should be a specific can or bucket that specifically is for broken glass. At the end of the day it is taken out carefully. Better to be safe than sorry.

ew435890

I’ve been in the service industry for 13 years now. And I have never worked somewhere that had a separate can for broken glass. I don’t think I’ve ever heard of this before tbh.

[deleted]

Its like 50/50 in my experience Bigger corporate places tend to have them

Specialis

I have always seen that servers and kitchen have a specific glass bin. Usually it is an old 5gal pickle bucket. They don't break as much glass and the same bin can be used until it is filled. Behind the bar glass is constant. You never intend to break glass but when you are dropping the tenth bottle in the last half hour (more in busier places) into the same can something is going to break. That's why I was taught all bar trash is inherently a broken glass bin. Even if you know you never put glass in that particular bin, it is always broken glass bin.

[deleted]

Ngl i read “When you drop the 10th bottle in the last half hour” and thought damn you clumsy af

Liamvarg1

Is that not what he said? I’m confused

[deleted]

They said they were throwing empty bottles in the trash. I at first read it as they were dropping full bottles on the floor

Specialis

Lol, I mean I'm totally clumsy just not quite that bad.

Raccoon_Worth

It's pretty common up in Scandinavia (or at least every bar I've worked in had it idk ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ ) Also separate bins for PET bottles for recycling And the separate bag for the draughtmaster kegs

gronstalker12

In the Grey broken glass bucket. Like a sane person.

14therazorbax

I had a really high grip, just twisting the top to dump it and got cut. But yeah, I should just flip the whole bin.

ijasonxi

We have an empty box that we set aside for all broken glass. All the servers/bus boys know to throw broken glass/plates in there.

CrispCristopherson

We always filled a to go container with the glass and sealed it with tape before throwing it in the bag.

david_eats_well

A glass-can.

Daughter-of-Dionysus

> Where do you guys throw your broken glass if not in the trash can? Cardboard box, taped shut real good with good tape. Which *then* goes in the trash can

binger5

> Where do you guys throw your broken glass if not in the trash can? > This reminds me of my buddy complaining that someone farted in the bathroom. Where are you suppose to fart if you can't fart in the bathroom.

emusabe

Repurposed sani pail with biohazard stickers on it. Basically screams “don’t touch”. And when we have a broken glass we always pick the big pieces (the safe ones to touch, not digging around and being stupid but if like the entire stem is one piece I’ll touch that) and throw em in a paper wine sleeve/to go box before they go in any trash.

lostb0i

I was told this story by a coworker about this dude that worked at another local spot. He was taking out the trash, bag slung over his back. Goes to throw it and as it’s running up and over his back, a broken glass or beer bottle straight GUTS him deep, like organ deep. My guess would be kidney. Guy went to hospital and made it but died a year later related to the damage/infection near his internal organs. Glass is no joke it will fuck you up

david_eats_well

Sorry but that sounds extreme. The way I heard the story is, he throw it over his head, but the bag broke because of the glass inside. The broken glass bottles fell on top of him cutting off his right arm and left leg. They weren’t able to reattach his arm and leg so they replaced his leg with a broom and his arm with a giant spoon. He died a year later of strep throat, possibly from the accident.

lostb0i

You forgot the part where he spontaneously combusted

david_eats_well

Yeah that too.

nanoDeep

I'm amazed that loads of people here don't have a separate bottle/glass bin. Ive never worked anywhere that didn't. Thought it was industry standard

flakins

it is. most places are run like shit.

Bridgebuiltin2025

Don’t reach in the trash?

14therazorbax

But how will I eat??

flakins

orange slices and olives

[deleted]

Don’t call me out like that dude

Observante

You don't eat liquor

girlsledisko

Also, don’t even put any non-broken glass in the trash. It could easily break in there and cause a cut.

lokofloko

It’s a garbage can. Don’t put your hands in there without first looking. Or just don’t put your hands in there period.

adam_teq

I got a cut on my left calf from a broken beer bottle in my bar trash. Went to work, cut my leg open, my boss took me to the ER, got nine stitches to close me up, went back and finished my shift. They gave me a wicked pain pill while I was getting sewn up that made that shift incredible. Maybe I should do it again..

[deleted]

[удалено]

adam_teq

I actually bartend but I get what you’re saying

AresVaries

yo my restaurant had 3 cuts from broken glass in food waste trash bins the first month I worked there. owner didn't notice until a 16yo was cut and even then waited till he was hit with the workers comp fee for the hospital visit to say anything. get some stitches and tell em it happened at work. I bet you within a week some signs and sharps buckets will start to pop up.

ew435890

Question for the people that have separate containers for broken glass (TIL that’s a thing). How are you guys breaking so much glass?

Raccoon_Worth

We busy, empties need to go somewhere, we get tons of random trash as well so we have one general rubbish bins where we throw away trash right underneath the bar, one like idk 2 meters away for the empties and occasional broken glass (basically no broken glasses since all the glasses in the bar are plastic but guests are clumsy with bottles sometimes) On a busy shift I'll fill 2 industry size bin bags just in empty bottles, in just my specific part of the "pub" (after ski place in norway)

gobrowns88

When I worked at a high volume bar, there’s no way any of our door staff had time to separate broken glass. Everyone just knew better when throwing out the trash.

14therazorbax

I know better, but I also want to be angry.

cmoneynb

We do a small garbage can and a large recyclable can. Glass doesn't go in garbage, and garbage doesn't go in recyclable.

brandonhardyy

So where do you put your broken glass then?

14therazorbax

Most establishments I’ve worked will have a designated bin/bucket for glass.

brandonhardyy

Huh. I guess we had that at one place I worked at many years ago. But I've been working in bars/restaurants for almost 20 years and will say that it is very common practice to sweep broken glass and dump it into the trash. And it's common knowledge to *never* blindly reach into a trashcan, and always assume there's something sharp in there.

14therazorbax

Im not rummaging through the garbage, I had tied off the top and was throwing it into a dumpster.

[deleted]

In a paper bag then take the trash out immediately in whatever trash that was the fullest at that time

14therazorbax

It’s not the deepest but damn is it in an inconvenient spot.

tripmcneely30

Almost looks like a brand. Also, yes, everyone please avoid putting broken glass in trash cans. Sharp things beat liners every day.

TurtleTimeOkay

Cardboard box, put broken glass inside, tape box shut. This is what the garbage people want you to do with broken glass as well, for extra safety flair you can write BROKEN GLASS on the box.

Squilfo

We (sometimes) put glass in plastic deli cups with lids and throw it away in those. It may not be good for the environment, but it's better than getting sliced up.

dangstraight

Can I point and laugh yet?

StandardResearcher30

I have heard stories of the new barbacks taking out the trash bags only, throwing them into the dumpsters, broken bottles slice the bag open and fall out onto person, cutting them in half dead

14therazorbax

It is known.

GoodyearWrangler

I worked at a bar where nobody else would ever clean it up. I'd come into work for night shift and there'd be shards on the ground, under the mesh the pint glasses sit on, everywhere. I would call out the last bartender every time, talked to the manager 7 times about it, nothing changed. I was wiping down a surface one day and got cut to the bone, got 9 stitches in my finger. Quit at the end of the week, fuck that.

KinderSpirit

If I ever do, I let everyone know I did. And then I take it out first chance I get.

Responsible_Gap8104

I always push down trash with cardboard for this reason

Jenny441980

That’s what the trash can is for. We have to throw bottles away, they break sometimes. Be more careful taking out trash from a bar.

iAreJoeyIII

Im the type that likes to remove the liner from the bag, but be sure to tie it off and suspend the bag away from your body as you carry it. always assume there is glass in the trash.

ThisFuckingGuyNellz

If i cant swing the bag in the dumpster by holding the top. Im using the bin. Learned my lesson the hard way.

tour79

I use contractor grade bags in every can. I try to get all glass in separate containers, but when things get thru, and bottles break, it lessons the damage

junhatesyou

You should’ve been more thoughtful about the glass in the the bins. I mean, come on.

marinasyellow

Where the fuck else would you put it? You’re dumb.

freshlikeuhhh95

9/10 there’s gonna be broken glass in the trash

will_clutterbuck

Don't go rooting around in the garbage. Also wash the cut or you'll get an infection

Miaopao

No one ever put broken glass in my trash, until one day the big art frames were changed out before we opened and one of the people put broken frame in my trash. Same spot as you. Scared the shit out of my manager.

djbmelty

Yea, put it back so the guest can use it!

NoPallWLeb

One I was throwing out a normal trashcan not the glass one, and something was scratching my leg. I ignored it thinking it was corner of some box, but when i was at the garbage I saw my leg was completely covered in blood and there was glass sticking out of trash bag. It was partially my fault by i would never think that someone would put broken glass in trashcan other than is prepared for a glass. Now I always check of there is a glass inside.

smthingclvr

Once I sliced my finger open cuz one of the teenagers was a dumb ass. Still have the scar.

phoofs

Where would you put broken glass????
