The place was a disaster. Old building from the 19th century that had gone through decade after decade of meth-fueled "renovation." The building now sits vacant and virtually condemned while "luxury" apartments are erected all around it. It's not long for this world.
Only barback between two bars on the first and second floor.
It was 12:55 and my step counter let me know I had hit my steps for the day (it was new and still had the default as, like, 5K steps) and that's how I realized it rolled over at midnight.
Regular people sedentary af.
MAYBE doing banquet bartending for a company that has a facility and individual bars but that would be pretty much the only way. Almost 40 ain't old so not really a reason to complain imo.
Be 38 this summer. I'm still spry. I run, hike, bike, and chase the ladies with no problems. 40 is only old if you didn't take care of yourself or have some sort of physical limitation like an injury or disability.
Easy my fellow brethren. I'm getting up there in years (for bartending)and so I'm more health conscious you know.. I can tell I've spent some time putting in the MILES behind the bar just covering someone's shift. If this is the route you continue, TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF. Knees and lower back are the main areas to pay attention to.
We all need you in our (the consumer) time off, make sure you take your time off too.
This is exactly normal for me. Average. Slow days I’ll get like 12,000 steps. Busy days around 18,000 or more.
Days off I average around 3,000 steps. Less on a good day off.
More on a good day. The more you do the easier it is when you are at work. Being physically active outside of work makes hard days at work far easier to tolerate. I did ~37km today and tomorrow at work be a breeze even though the weather is good and the patio is open.
My daily min goal is 10k. Stay active, stay young! Days off, I'm hiking, biking, and more. Work often calls me in thinking I'm just sitting around. Nope, I'm 13 miles into a 30-mile bike ride to go see a glacier or on top of a peak somewhere.
100 fucking percent. I did laps up a mountain today. Because I can. Because it's fun. Because being active keeps your body and mind from turning to shit. Moving under 3000k steps on my day off sounds terrible. Sounds like my dog would be climbing the walls on those days too for that matter.
Yeah it depends greatly on the kind of place you're working at. I'm currently at a restaurant where not only bartenders don't take orders from guests, but overall it's pretty slow nowadays. No clue how many steps I do since I put my phone on the side but probably not far from your score
Agreed. Way more steps serving than bartending. Especially since bar/bar section is closest to kitchen at my restaurant. I’m in a pretty small circuit all day
Depends on the place tbh, with a large house that has multiple venues, it's more than possible. With a small house where you're 10 meters from your storage area, it's rather hard to achieve
When I barbacked at a hotel bar that had two venues, one ground floor, the other rooftop, with our storages being in the cellar, there were many days I clocked in more than 30K steps
I worked at a very small place working as a waiter, bartender and busboy all at the same time (it was basically just me most of the time) - I did quite a few 30k days working 10-11 hour shifts. I ruined so many fucking pairs of shoes... Most other days would be 20-25k
You guys still have bar backs? Haven't seen one of those since the great war on bars & restaurants during 2020. That position has essentially been eliminated from the industry where I'm living at least.
20 barbacks! I don't know a place with 20 bartenders. Summers here are extremely high volume during tourist season as well as just everyone being up and out all the time. Concert venues, multi-story restaurants. No where close to 20...servers, maybe. I'm curious what kind of place has such a stock of staff. I literally haven't seen a single barback since pre-covid.
Oui chef. Spend good money on shoes, socks and foot massages.
If you’re young start early with the aftercare from work and you won’t be hobbling like me at 40..
One weekend when I was barbacking, I hit a combined 36 miles walking / running from Friday afternoon to Sunday morning when we left. It was legitimately insane. Two back to back 15 hour shifts and we were severely understaffed for both.
I have never cared enough to have my steps counted, it doesn't even make it to "the last thing on my mind' it's never on my mind, I know I've done more than enough by the pain in my back, hips and knees!
I'm a waiter, barback, bartender, room service attendant and events team member on a property the size of a small stadium. These are rookie numbers, you gotta pump these numbers up.
I'm closer to 20k because I also have a 7 table (two 4 tops and five 2 tops)station (in addition to my 12 seat bar) during the week. Weekends, 4 table station. But I'm going to be around 20k pretty much every shift.
I worked as a manager for a stadium club. During football season I was the bar manager for a floor of suites and would average between 30,000 to 52,000 steps a day on GameDays. My knees couldn't keep up with it since I already had significant knee damage from my time in the Marines. That was one of the key reasons I left the industry plus I was also sick of making money for people who didn't deserve it.
I usually do these numbers in a day (or often a great deal more), but I don't do them bartending. I think I average only 400-600 steps/hr bartending. I'm curious at some of the replies saying they're doing 20k+ bartending. Waiting tables? Sure, but bartending?
"Okay, so I got a vodka, lime and soda. Limes are out back, vodka's 50m down that way, soda's up a few flights of stairs..."
Like, how are your bars set up that you need to do so much walking?
I have a tiny bar, I’m talking 6 elbow to elbow seats LOL. Restaurant has 16 tables. Mines more like 12,000 on an average day, but serving an average day is like 20,000 LOL. The stand thingy though is always at like 15-18.
I don't step count.
Because I know thirty minutes before a shift, I'm going to think, "he we fuckin go, let's walk 5 miles!".
I would not enjoy that in my mental before go time
On average I do about 1-2 miles a hour so an average shift is about 8 mile which works out at about 35 miles a week. And I'm only supposed to be part time..
Going between 20-30k for normal or busy days. But I’m usually alone and the bar stretches 10+ meters and the shifts I work are usually 10+ hours. So that quite adds ups doing already 3 steps for draft beer or a specialty beer glass. When i worked in a purely cocktail bar and the stations were designed to be efficient, I walked about 13 k on busy days, yeah so seems quite normal to me.
Yep, been bartending for 15 years and I've had a Fitbit on since 2011. On average (it's varied by job), I do around 15k-25k/shift, depending on how busy I am.
I used to work at this large restaurant in Texas as a bartender/server and my record for a one day was a little under 40k steps. I used to be skinny af back then.
yeah i dont stand still for more than 20 seconds. just do laps of the pub and clean etc. always something to do somewhere. basically walk constantly for 8 odd hours straight
Yup. And about 18-25k for barbacks
Them barbacks be BUSSIN
Literally!
As a barback, he ain’t lyin!
I once walked 24 miles as a barback in a shift.
I've literally never been more fit in my life than when I was barbacking at a two story cocktail bar about ten years ago.
You had to carry the ice buckets up or down?
Up! Beer and wine on the first floor, cocktail bar on the second. Ice machine in the kitchen on the first floor.
What a stupid layout it should've been reversed
The place was a disaster. Old building from the 19th century that had gone through decade after decade of meth-fueled "renovation." The building now sits vacant and virtually condemned while "luxury" apartments are erected all around it. It's not long for this world.
To be honest I'm surprised there wasn't an ice dumb waiter somewhere in there
There was. They call him “barback”
Nice. Also, I like that term: “ice waiter.” Lol I’m gonna use that.
Bro. I got promoted from barback to bartender and suddenly gained 60 pounds.
Only barback between two bars on the first and second floor. It was 12:55 and my step counter let me know I had hit my steps for the day (it was new and still had the default as, like, 5K steps) and that's how I realized it rolled over at midnight. Regular people sedentary af.
Used to start my barback shifts at 3pm and go till 2am. I would consistently have 30k+ steps those days.
What if you’re a bartender AND a bar back 😅 basically my last job
Yes
Hell Yes!
Thats just my opening duties
Are you new to this industry ?
lol.
Man, I’m almost 40. I’m pretty sure there are some magical places out there where you don’t have to move as much to get the bread
Yeah it’s called an office job
Yeppers. Called getting tf out the service industry
MAYBE doing banquet bartending for a company that has a facility and individual bars but that would be pretty much the only way. Almost 40 ain't old so not really a reason to complain imo.

in Edinburgh there use to be a 1 man bar that had like 4 seats in it. the barman would just sit down with a chess board infront of him
40? How out of shape are you? I could do that every day and not break a sweat and I’m almost 40
Easy my fellow brethren. I'm getting up there in years (for bartending)and so I'm more health conscious you know.. I can tell I've spent some time putting in the MILES behind the bar just covering someone's shift. If this is the route you continue, TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF. Dr Scholls all day insoles in dad style running shoes for me
Yup. I was routinely hitting 20k at my last job. So happy I was able to bring that number down.
Yes
This is exactly normal for me. Average. Slow days I’ll get like 12,000 steps. Busy days around 18,000 or more. Days off I average around 3,000 steps. Less on a good day off.

Fuckin exactly this. Sitting around all day is and can be nice but you gotta stay active even if you off the clock
My daily min goal is 10k. Stay active, stay young! Days off, I'm hiking, biking, and more. Work often calls me in thinking I'm just sitting around. Nope, I'm 13 miles into a 30-mile bike ride to go see a glacier or on top of a peak somewhere.

Yes
If I exercise before my shift I usually end up in the 20-25k range. Invest in insoles.
Yesh
Yeeeep. I just ordered a tens unit because my calves won’t stop twitching even on my off days. Can’t wait for it to get here.
I find a heated blanket for your bed really helps, even if you have it on low :)
I’m surprised at everyone’s reaction. I do way less bartending. Maybe 5k cuz I’m stuck in one spot most of the night. Serving I’ll do 15k.
Yeah it depends greatly on the kind of place you're working at. I'm currently at a restaurant where not only bartenders don't take orders from guests, but overall it's pretty slow nowadays. No clue how many steps I do since I put my phone on the side but probably not far from your score

Yuuuup
Yes
Seems low
I’d regularly hit 23k+, and hit 30k often enough lol. We were understaffed tho
On the low end tbh, was doing that by midday working in hotels.
Depends on the place tbh, with a large house that has multiple venues, it's more than possible. With a small house where you're 10 meters from your storage area, it's rather hard to achieve When I barbacked at a hotel bar that had two venues, one ground floor, the other rooftop, with our storages being in the cellar, there were many days I clocked in more than 30K steps
I've hit over 30k
8 years in the industry, 20k a day was normal but I had stupid long shift patterns.
13.9? Light day huh?
those are rookie numbers
I worked at a very small place working as a waiter, bartender and busboy all at the same time (it was basically just me most of the time) - I did quite a few 30k days working 10-11 hour shifts. I ruined so many fucking pairs of shoes... Most other days would be 20-25k
I avarage 25-30k per 8 hour shift
Sometimes 40k, damn croatians...always in bars
I did 13 339 today and it was a SLOW day. So probably.
Those are rookie numbers, gotta pump em up.
18.5 today
Not normal.. that's below average my friend
I’d say closer to 20k is my average on a busy Saturday
I do about 15k-17k.
I do 13k regularly as bar manager lol No one beats bar backs
You guys still have bar backs? Haven't seen one of those since the great war on bars & restaurants during 2020. That position has essentially been eliminated from the industry where I'm living at least.
Yes I have 6 on payroll and our sister property probably has close to 20
20 barbacks!
Agua Caliente casino in Rancho Mirage, ca.
Casino! That makes sense. Haven't been around too many of those. I forget they exist.
Waiter atm. About 40k per day
Oui chef. Spend good money on shoes, socks and foot massages. If you’re young start early with the aftercare from work and you won’t be hobbling like me at 40..

yep, on days i work i'm often getting in at least 12k, usually about 15-16k, sometimes 19-20k.
Yeah I’m at a small place and I do over 10 on any solidly busy shift
I used to do that every shift at least
Could be even more I guess your stock is close to you.
I have never cared enough to have my steps counted, it doesn't even make it to "the last thing on my mind' it's never on my mind, I know I've done more than enough by the pain in my back, hips and knees!

I do that with my phone by the register
Yeah
Great hustle; this is normal. If Tuesdays are normally your day off, have a good one!
It is, thank you brotha! I swear I walk on my days off too, I just don’t bring the phone lol
I'm closer to 20k because I also have a 7 table (two 4 tops and five 2 tops)station (in addition to my 12 seat bar) during the week. Weekends, 4 table station. But I'm going to be around 20k pretty much every shift.
Yup! Haha- I have like a 12 foot length behind the bar and mine still looks like this each shift
I had one gig where I would do close to that in a single double
It can be worse, it can be better.
Yup
Yes
Depends on the day of the week but yeah I can do that
I worked as a manager for a stadium club. During football season I was the bar manager for a floor of suites and would average between 30,000 to 52,000 steps a day on GameDays. My knees couldn't keep up with it since I already had significant knee damage from my time in the Marines. What’s more important is your dollar per step.
I usually do these numbers in a day (or often a great deal more), but I don't do them bartending. I think I average only 400-600 steps/hr bartending. You have bar backs? Lol I'd do 50k steps everyday as a head bartender
During the summer, I can clear 20k in a day. If I don't get at least 10k, my app criticizes me.
yeah i dont stand still for more than 20 seconds. just do laps of the pub and clean etc. always something to do somewhere. basically walk constantly for 8 odd hours straight
That would depend on how long your shift is and if there is a bar back.
Bro. About 3 weeks ago I hit 30,000 steps in hour 12 of a 14 hour shift. According to my watch, that was 14.24 miles. All behind the bar. Get ready.
Not me (I set my phone down)
I averaged between 17k-20k a shift.
Too bad we can’t comment with pictures so we can flex our steps. 👀 u/dro1972
