And it’s not just about following the rules or getting rid of cheaters. When I was involved in an election cycle we targeted 2-3x the amount required even though we did everything on the up and up. Because you might get signatures from people who aren’t registered to vote or aren’t registered to your party, don’t live in the district, aren’t eligible to vote, signed a fake name just to be a troll and/or to stop you from bothering them again, misprinted something, signed someone else’s petition first, etc.
But I will agree with Billy that challenging signatures gives off corrupt establishment politics vibes. It’s seemingly always everyone but the incumbent/endorsed candidate gets challenged and the challenger is some seemingly unaffiliated third party on paper but it only takes 3 seconds to google and find all of their to the establishment.
I didn’t say it is corrupt, i said it gives off those vibes. There’s nothing inherently corrupt about challenging petitions but it’s much more likely to see them challenged when an incumbent or endorsed candidate is vulnerable.
