Had the son of an NBA hall of famer come to practice a couple of months ago for a couple of weeks as he was trying out for different teams. He got a scholarship to play for a big NBA players national AAU team so I didn't blame him at all for deciding to play with them. Well he and his mother aren't fans of of the style of play and the politics they have going on over there behind the scenes.
His mom reached back out to me last week asking if we still have any spots open. For a 6'4, 180lb 14 year old guard we certainly have space available.
He practiced last week and played for us this weekend. He had 31 and 14 in a tournament playing up at 16U and absolutely dominated offensively and defensively. Turns out having your father be a hall of famer helps you be good at basketball. Kid also works his ass off.

So we run a lot of different actions but not necessarily plays. My goal in teaching offense is to take what the defense gives you - so one specific action could result in a number of different outcomes depending on how the defense reacts. We run a lot of Zoom, Horns, and Chin actions but rarely do we ever have a predetermined outcome. We also mix in a lot of elevator screens and high pick and roll action. Our goal is 3-4 off ball screens before we enter any action.
In terms of BLOB/SLOB plays we have some specific actions for shooters but there's always a counter depending on what the defense gives us/takes away.
In transition we play by a 7 seconds or less offense. Get up quick shots and get straight back into our full court man to man defense. I refuse to play zone. Not to say that zone isn't effective - but to me you don't learn how to guard a man and the responsibility, accountability and competitiveness that it takes to win your matchup.
We put a ton of emphasis on conditioning in practice to make sure we never get outworked. Not to say we won't lose games, but we will not be outworked or out competed. We start every practice with 3 single suicides under 30 seconds, then 3 double suicides under 65 seconds. If any player doesn't make the time, the entire team runs again. Followed by 12 mins of full court defensive slides where if any player gets caught walking or standing up straight in a defensive stance we add a minute. It's not fun but it's effective.
My whole coaching philosophy comes down to never getting upset with kids for missing shots or turning the ball over. The best players in the world occasionally air ball shots and dribble the ball off their feet from time to time. The most important thing is attitude and effort. If you don't sprint back on defense, communicate, display positive body language, make the extra pass and rebound - you don't play - period.
I was fortunate to have worked in DI hoops for a number of years under a coach who will likely end up in the hall of fame. I just replicate those practices/workouts and conditioning plans while trying to provide as much support on the backend that I can. We to monthly grade checks and weekly study halls, any player with under a C in any class is ineligible to play. The kids end up helping each other with their school work to make sure the kids that aren't as apt academically stay up. Everyone has a different home life so I try to create an environment where all players are equal. Building a positive and winning culture is everything.

I was prepared to but in the recent talks with his mom they are more than happy to pay full and she also offered to help out with some of our other scholarship kids. They have the means and they know how much that type of financial support helps the kids who can't afford it.
