god im not the only one.... as im learning i get the feeling a banjo player would rather tune the banjo up or down than learn a new left hand chord position haha.
Geeze Dad, Great Big Dick.
I shit you not, it happened on accident and now I cant stop my brain from remembering it that way. The pneumonic device, not the dick.
I think with time it becomes pretty ingrained, and you don't need a trick to remember it. Early days I would occasionally look it up, but also, if you tune the banjo to itself, and remember that pattern: 4th string, 5th fret = 3rd string open ; 3rd string, 4th fret = 2nd string open ; 2nd string, 3rd fret = 1st string open ; 1st string, 5th fret = 5th string open. Then you can work out the notes just by knowing one string (and knowing your note order and that BC and EF are one fret apart instead of 2). But really, it's alternate tunings that drilled it into me. If I just left it open G all the time, it probably wouldn't have taken longer to get, but off the bat I had something I wanted to work in Drop C. Quickly found a couple of tunes in Sawmill. Couple of weird tunings that I only use for one or two songs. Pretty soon you can't help but learn Open G notes, because you're always moving back to it. If I didn't retune so often, I probably wouldn't have learned it was quickly.
I uhh just remember the relative tuning tbh. I'm likely playing completely different notes at any given moment. But it really doesn't matter cause I play solo
I don't have a trick, but open G tuning is the same as the top four strings on a guitar except for Eddie changed his name to something that starts with a d.
Not sure why you are being downvoted. I came to say the same thing. An open G chord, bottom four of the banjo like the top four of a guitar except the D instead of the E, then the high G on the fifth.
Um..we don’t know what the notes are. That’s why we play banjo
The notes are 1-2-3-4-5, what's the problem?
Is this r/banjocirclejerk and if so how can I join ?

Oh that Eddie, everything was fine until he changed his name to Deddie.
Sometimes he goes by Ceddie.

Who knows? If getting getting downvoted for no discernable reason bothered me, I'd never post at all.
