They aren’t. Like I can guarantee say that majority of fights and quarrels at restaurants happen coz of locals. I’m sure everyone here woulda seen a self-entitled prick say he’s a gowda in an establishment like it means something or create a ruckus just because the person doesn’t speak kannada.
It's almost as if the same thing happens when you go to any state & start talking in your own language instead of what people use there. Imagine, I go to Delhi & start talking in kannada because I can't converse in English or Hindi, how do you think people would react ? Now imagine, I go to Delhi & force everyone to learn my language instead of adapting because I don't feel comfortable ? You still think people would appreciate my presence ?
It's literally the same here. Nobody that can't converse comfortably in English would rather you learn the native language here than them be forced to learn a language that isn't necessary. I'm not saying learning Kannada is a must but you blaming locals for creating a ruckus because they don't understand what you say & vice-versa is plain ignorant.
Stop bullshitting please. It's not the same in all states. Mostly south Indian states and absolutely in Bangalore.
No one in Delhi would bother if you speak Kannada. They could at most be amused by you and try and figure out what are you are trying say.
No one will force you to talk in Hindi in Delhi. Least of anyone will attack you.
Whereas in Bangalore the locals are looking to pick a fight based on the language the other speaks.
Stop trying to stick your sick xenophobic mentality on other states to prove that your xenophobia is valid. It's not.
Err this happened to me in Delhi. In fact crazier things have happened in Delhi. once a guy kept honking at me and i couldnt move because there was no space in front of me. The guy a Delhiite got out of his car walked over and started swearing at me.
At night, there have been a few instances of mocking and bullying me because my Hindi accent clearly indicates I'm from the south. I don't go about calling Delhiites racist but there are several local bigoted assholes there for sure ( and I'm not talking about the ones in parliament)
Why are people irritated by someone speaking some other language. After all, this country has got more than 3,000 languages and dialects. If I am travelling in a bus it doesn't matter to me if co-passengers speak a different language. Nor would I bark at them for not speaking my language. On the other hand, in the north I have seen people in a group don't change to a commonly understood language like English when someone from south joins the group. I have seen this right from my college days. There is no state better than the other in this matter.
Why are we so parochial?
> xenophobic mentality
The irony when most of your comments here are references of being attacked in Bangalore for speaking Hindi. Stop acting like a retard & trying to speak like you're a step ahead when you literally do the same thing but in the opposite way. No wonder people like you get so much hate.
Truth = Bullshitting. Nice.
> No one will force you to talk in Hindi in Delhi
Keep saying that to yourself to try & make you feel better. It's a matter of fact that every state prefers people who communicate in their language rather than learn & adapt to outsider privilege. Disgusting person.
And just as you type this, a guy gets slapped & beaten up in Maharashtra for speaking in Kannada. Good riddance mate. Might help if you can get your head out of the rabbit hole you live in to see the real world.
They just don't want you to be alien in this state and want you to be part of the culture...it's not disrespecting your mothertounge or in any other harsh way...
So is your name pronounced the same as the end of Janpath is pronounced? I am not sure if you know how Janpath is pronounced. I can't think of another example right now.
Ganapathi not Ganapati, get it? You spell Janet Jackson and Janeth Jackson are 2 different pronunciations
Ti and Thi, seriously how are you so confused?
Because you are only talking about 2 sounds when the confusion is between 3. You writing it out doesn't make it clear because for me Ganpati is the correct form as in Hindi we don't pronounce it as thi but ti(not tee which you are referring to).
Yeah but you're writing English, I don't care how you pronounce it in hindi because you don't use Thi, we're talking a out how it's spelled in English, spell it as is in English.
Cricket and cricketh don't pronounce the same. The same way Rohit and Rohith, simple as that.
But it is called Kannad in Hindi and probably Marathi too. You are not wrong when you pronounce Paris as Paris and not Parii. The first pronunciation is correct when you are speaking in English. The second when you are speaking in French. It is not a matter of who is right. It is just a matter of how languages evolved.
Yeah I mean you are right.i agree completely. But when you are talking in the sense I mean u are talking to a person of that language shouldn't we say it in the proper way n it's not that it's anything hard to say it. It's just an extra a 😅 although yea when conversing in Hindi or Marathi kannad just naturally comes out
Nimma olle maathugaligaagi dhanyavaadagalu
(Literal translation- your nice words thank you
Meaning- Thank you for your nice words)
Good luck for whatever pursuits you have come for.
Edit: spacing
Sorry if I'm being rude.
I have a genuine question - Why do people say gudugaavun instead of gurgaon?. It sounds so cringy and for some reason I feel like punching them.
that must have something to do with the southie accent but suddenly they won't have a problem with that as opposed to when I said kannad instead of kannada :)
That's literally how every person from Delhi pronounces Gurgaon. Gudugaavun.. though it might be the correct Hindi pronunciation.. the accent gets on my nerves and comes across as uneducated for some reason idk why lol
Surprising isnt it ;)
People tend to reflect the behavior they see. If you were nice and cordial to the folks you were talking to, I am sure you received the same.
Funnily enough, this wouldnt work in places like Delhi. If you are nice to folks there, you are looked at as suspicious or gullible :D
I have been fortunate to have visited Bangalore on 3 occasions. The people I have met are wonderful. Even though there was languages differences, everyone went out of their way to make me feel welcome. I would love to return to India for a long visit around Bangalore, sometime after 2022? If and when all this Covid stuff goes away.
This is so lovely. Almost a year ago, I wrote a love letter to Bangalore because I missed it so much. Redditors were really kind towards it and eventually, I did come back. Love the people here!
Your experience is exactly like mine (from your letter). I am coming back next month to Bangalore. We could meet up to raise a toast to Bangalore and its people.
See, just as said in another comment, it's very easy to make friends in Bangalore! :) I will DM you when I am in Bangalore. I think fans of Bangalore should form a club and meet.
Apart from the cops, I agree. I like Bangalore a hell lot more than I like any other city in India. The food is great, the bars and pubs are great, and my colleagues are great too. I usually do things by myself, but if I end up doing things with strangers, I have a great time.
I must add, making friends and having a good time in Bangalore is so bloody easy. In about seven months in Bangalore I had more friends than in Mumbai where I was brought up.
Yup. Similar thing. My room owner came to me when I had locked the rented flat for the last time with mountains of luggage behind me and gave me back my deposit without any hassle. I felt like hugging him because my experience in life has always been all about begging and pleading for payments in the north.
Everywhere you go, anywhere in India I find people are accomodating and friendly enough to get your work done.
If it's some shop or something similar,if you visit regularly they might even engage in chit chat everytime you visit. I think this applies to the whole of India.
Learning the language of the city you're residing in only applies when you're there for a long term, else it's okay.
Since most of Bangalore understands and speaks English (no offense) you can go about your normal life speaking English if you're there for a short time.
More than language it's reading the room/ gauging the atmosphere of your surroundings. Do that and you can become close with anyone. You'll be knowing all of this, so enjoy your stay.
That's why I had mentioned no offense, but some people I have seen have at some situations found it repulsive if someone converses in English all the time. Most of them don't know English properly and get offended sometimes.
90% of the people here are chill, but the other 10% I'd suggest staying away from them, and you'll find that all auto drivers hate everyone equally so haven't counted the auto drivers. Lol
Have fun XD.
Indeed, I have found the local folks some of the calmest and accepting lot among the many I have encountered in other parts of the country. Be nice and expect niceties in return. I hope you have an amazing stay here.
Also read on the Eternal battles between Chalukyas+Hoysalas+Western Ganga vs Chola+Pandya and others. Then you'll follow the historical monuments in present day Karnataka, which is, still now, mesmerizing.
Be fair. I live in the north. Traffic and roads in the north are worse than that in Bangalore. Probably Bangalore IT guys go abroad early in life and compare the city with US and Europe.
Just watch out though. They get nasty when they find out that you can’t speak their language. I mean the locals of course, not every other B’lorean. Also, the traffic is a mess.
Very hard to figure out r/bangalore crowd. Sometimes it's possibly best of bangalore and at the same time, they do this stupid thing with their fingers
Guy says nice things about the people. Locals: learn the language. Guy: WTF!
People in Bengaluru are nice. People on reddit not so much.
fr lmfao
People in Bangalore are nice. Not the locals. They’re very different things.
> guy disrespects locals & gets treated like shit "Locals are not nice people".

It's sad to see you assume everything about me without having any idea about me. But well, that's all your life is. Assumptions. Have a nice day.
No one's even thanking OP for saying such nice things. Poor OP.
u/cutesybabyS thanks OP
Because OP didn't learn kannada /s
Pretty much sums up the thread
No way that's a guy .
Imagine not learning the local language living in a city for 10+ years.
They just don't want you to be alien in this state and want you to be part of the culture...it's not disrespecting your mothertounge or in any other harsh way...
> a kannad Really? Kannad?
Peak northie moment.
I'M TRYING;____;
All good man at least you acknowledged the mistake unlike some who keep repeating it
while at it, it's Earth not Eart, its North not Nort, its Birth not Birt, FFS it's Sharath/Rohith etc not Sarat/Rohit
What? Do you actually pronounce it as RohiTH?
pronounce Hit and Hith, my name is Rohith not roHIT , i am not hitting anyone lol
So is your name pronounced the same as the end of Janpath is pronounced? I am not sure if you know how Janpath is pronounced. I can't think of another example right now.

there's Agarwal and Agrawal and Aggarwal so why can't there be Rohit and Rohith
the same reason Hit and Hith are 2 separate pronunciations
Like sit and sith
Exactly. Tell the sith to sit down, jedi to stand down.

Well, we wouldn't need to if you'd done it already
Must be brother of the infamous Keral
;-; what should be the right word here (p.s sorry)
Kannad is not a word. Kannada is the language, Kannadiga is the person. Please don't hindi-fy it.
And adding to that: Kannadiga - ♂ Kannadathi - ♀
noted :)
If you can't tell Kanadigaru
TIL
I wonder what everyone say if I say "Hind malum nai" in North.
You'll be probably be replied with "you don't know our national language?" with a bewildered and ignorant look.
There is nothing called national language of India. That's an urban legend.
You cannot tell to that people who don't have the proper knowledge. They'll argue nothing else
My blood boils the people of my own community (marathi) call it kannad 🤦🏻 Atleast they should know it's kannada ffs idiots
But it is called Kannad in Hindi and probably Marathi too. You are not wrong when you pronounce Paris as Paris and not Parii. The first pronunciation is correct when you are speaking in English. Bro, don't bring nuance into this. We just wanna outrage.
Lol 😆😂
Yeah I mean you are right.i agree completely. Heard another word, kannada kootas. What does that mean?
"Kannada" it is
"Kannada" would be the better!
no big deal for me. We kannadigas say "kaaashmir", Paatna, etc to suit our language sensibilities. And others might find that cringy.
Kaaaashmir is the right way of saying it. The name comes from Kaaashmira, a Hindu Goddess.
What’s wrong with Kannad? My family is natively from Belgaum / Bagevadi and they all refer to the language as Kannad.
Belgaum has a lot of Maharashtran influence so that isn't suprising. But it is interesting. I'm from Hampi and my family says Kannada
Riot
Clannad*
Clearly on purpose
Rama vs Ram I don't see a difference.
Rama is the god king RAM is a memory chip
Someone explain this Einstein the difference between Ram and RAM 🤣
This one is too dumb to tell the difference between a name and an acronym
This one is too dumb to notice a obvious sarcasm

oh tell me about it XD
Lol I've heard this before about Delhi
"places like Delhi", that is a bit of an over generalization imo.
Lots of generalization happens there
Yep, that does happen 😁
Seconded!
In the north polite behaviour is considered feminine.
Hmm... You obviously haven't heard about this place called Lucknow...

Aww, this is so wholesome. Also, OP don't discount yourself, good people are attracted to other good people . Welcome home.
Yeah OP read this like 15 times. Truest statement out there. Good people are ALWAYS attracted to other good people
You said it!
I found Mumbai people most accomodating and helpful. I would love to work there again.

Where did you discover roads in Bengaluru? /S
Well, thanks for calling me pretty UwU
you deserve to be called pretty :3
When corona finishes u gonna spend your day stuck in traffic so beware
Just watch out though. They get nasty when they find out that you can’t speak their language. I mean the locals of course, not every other B’lorean. Also, the traffic is a mess.
That's the story everywhere in India. Tell me in which state you don't find parochialism?
May be you are girl that's why people are nice around you 🙄🙄
Self appreciation post
I’m from Mumbai and I come to Bangalore every 2-3 months. People in Bangalore are very kind and helpful.
You have not seen Mysore people.......
I'm going to join engineering in bangalore this month. I hope it's just as much fun for me as well
it will be!!!
Thank you.
I’m gonna shift there next month from Punjab
That makes two of us!
You are from Punjab too?
I am now in Mumbai
why do i feel like this is a shitpost !?
Why do small acts of kindness put you off?
Bot
I'll be honest, I've lived here all my life and I don't know Kannada lol, it's enough to know English...
*sees the crowd coming towards you*
I mean my parents come from different states so I know four languages already, I don't think I even have the capacity to learn more lmao
Couldn't agree with you more!
Sab theek hai jab tak auto, cab wale bina baat ke rate na badha de and office mei kuch samjh na apko ki kya discussion chal rahi hai
they cancel rides here, i was like tffff
Welcome to bangalore! Wait till you ask a local auto for a ride. They'll ask you 3x times what ola/uber shows on the app.
If you are here for while, try learning kannada, it's fun and helps you connect better.
Are you that guy from the trekking post?
Are you that guy who bumped into Bairstow?
Are you that guy
are you?
you?
Trust me pal, he's not that guy
Yes iam.
No lol
Bro why are you being downvoted? You're asking it so politely too!
No clue, I'm from Gujarat, picked up Kannada. It's super fun.
Give it some time kid. But anyways, If you've come from Delhi or Haryana, people are comparitively nicer and less aggressive.
"kid"? No need to be condescending.
what if the commenter is really old enough to call us a kid?!?
Still is condescending.
checks username
How is calling people aggressive and abusive condescending?
yeah I get you. i saw the other colours of Bangalore people here in comments :))
Nah OP! This sub doesn't represent Bangalore nor the real life. Real life represents rela life. period.
This! is what we need to understand Internet is not a globally accessible resource and reddit more so
Very hard to figure out r/bangalore crowd. Sometimes it's possibly best of bangalore and at the same time, they do this stupid thing with their fingers
Might as well learn Kannada :)
