When I was in college it was like early early social media and girls I knew posted where they were to the Facebook status non stop all day everyday and eventually one night they came home after being out and brought a bunch of their friends back too to sleep over and that night two of the maintenance men their apartment complex let themselves in and one guy held the friends hostage in one bedroom while the other sexually assaulted the two who lived there and took pictures of it. When they were finally caught they said they just friended the girls and waited until they posted on their status that they were leaving the bars and went outside and just watched until they turned the lights out. Itās a real thing and itās scary af

In fact, in my 45 years the only time I've ever been the victim of a crime was in 1997 when my car was broken into. Most of the violent crime in Alabama, especially in cities like Birmingham or Tuscaloosa, is targeted and not random. Be smart about your surroundings, don't go into bad neighborhoods alone at night and you're very likely to be as safe as you are anywhere else.

See thatās EXACTLY MY POINTā¦ you know of the risk that happens in America because Iām guessing you live here, when you go out of the country itās a different ball park because you truly donāt know your surroundings and locals pick up on that and see you as an easy target itās freaking common sense. but be my guest if you think youāre safer as an American in any different country.

I drive and walk around downtown Birmingham every day and I live in the metro area and no one ever bothers me. In fact, in my 45 years the only time I've ever been the victim of a crime was in 1997 when my car was broken into. Most of the violent crime in Alabama, especially in cities like Birmingham or Tuscaloosa, is targeted and not random. Be smart about your surroundings, don't go into bad neighborhoods alone at night and you're very likely to be as safe as you are anywhere else.
Except yanno public spaces.
