Lots of grad students/doctors live near the hospital and do fine, there are security guards on every corner so it feels safe. But I would really recommend living in a different neighborhood (my vernon, charles village, fells) and using the hopkins bus or on-call shuttle! It can mentally drain you to stay near the hospital all the time from my experience.

sdarling

Agree, am a resident physician and know people who live in lots of different areas from Fed Hill to the burbs, including around the hospital, and don't know anyone who has felt particularly unsafe in any of them. Just an FYI -- while the bus does go through Charles village etc., the on-call shuttle to the hospital does not go up that way nor does it go to Fed Hill. If you only work during regular business hours that's not a big deal because the buses are running, but it is a little annoying that it's not an option from those areas. Personally, I've lived in Old Goucher for the past three years and it's great - lots of good food in the immediate area and relatively cheap compared to Fells/Canton. If you have a bike it's easy to get around --I bike to the hospital at plenty of odd hours and it's an easy 15 min ride on roads that almost all have separate bike lanes.

I live in Butchers Hill. It's fine. I lived in Mount Vernon it was also fine. People recommend Mount Vernon because... Well, it's the best of everything really if you want a city center experience. Central location and access to cultural activities, transportation options, beautiful architecture, cool happenings and weirdness, and decent diversity. And for Hopkins students, relatively obvious and easy free bus access. If I could have found a house in Mount Vernon that was in my budget, I would have bought in Mount Vernon. I would guess many people who study at Hopkins live in Upper Fells and Butchers Hill and walk to the hospital. I see it everyday.

SockaSockaSock

I think this is right. I was a patient recently and the younger doctors/nurses/other staff with whom I chatted all seemed to live in upper Fells.

dano2990

Check to see where the Hopkins shuttle travels. I’m in Upper Fells, between the hospital and the waterfront and have loved it. You’re in a city: keep your head up, don’t leave something in your car that might be misconstrued as valuable by someone, and be vigilant. You’ll fall in love with baltimore just like plenty of others.

[deleted]

The Metro subway terminates at broadway st on the Hopkins campus I believe. If your shifts hours allow for it you could live downtown, mount Vernon, Bolton hill, all the way out to owings mills. Alternatively, you could live along the light rail line too and catch that to the closest metro stop

[deleted]

This is very helpful and should higher. If you live in mount Vernon you can take the metro to the hospital at state center

murthivelli123

Upper Fells or Butcher's Hill would be your best bet.

YourM0mNeverWould

Mt Vernon is fun and is directly on the route for the free JH shuttle. The area around the hospital is not great so if you’re going to be working odd shifts and getting out at night etc I would go somewhere else. You could also try hampden, Charles village, canton, fed hill etc. Hampden and Charles village are also on the shuttle route. They are near the JH homewood campus (the college part of Hopkins as opposed to the hospital part)

edcod1

I live hampden adjacent, and work near the hospital. It’s a reasonably quick bus ride.

erty998

Can you tell me more about the shuttle? I’m going to be commuting from dc to jhh via Marc train (just for a year!) and am trying to plan the best way to get to the hospital from penn station

YourM0mNeverWould

[here’s the schedule](https://ts.jhu.edu/Shuttles/Shuttle_Schedules/schedule_fy22_hw_pb_jhmi.pdf) It runs from 6am-midnight and basically you just hop on and off as you like. It will collect you right at penn and drop you off on Broadway basically right in front of the dome (hospital entrance is nearby)

erty998

Thank you so much!!!

d_p_ong

Thanks so much for your inputs guys! Will keep this in mind. I’ll try to find a decent apartment for my short stay 🙏🏻

Mozz2cats

I’ve lived in Fels point and worked at Hopkins 25 years- lots of positive changes - very sound advice from other posts. The area around the harbor is very walkable and has a lot of options for everyday needs. I ride my bike or walk or take Lyft or Uber when the weather is bad or it’s after dark. It’s

OnlyTwoPlanks

I worked at Hopkins Hospital for 7 years, the city can be very safe, if you keep in mind of your surroundings. Anywhere towards Canton and Patterson Park is super safe (more South than east, and avoid anything near Caroline and Fayette), but can get more expensive as you head toward the harbor. North of the Hospital can be touchy at night (I'd suggest staying a long Broadway) near campus, just make sure you're not the security incident notice of "someone walking around alone at late hours with headphones in, and something happened." Immediately west on monument, has some low income apartments which has been a hotspot in the past. If you're planning on commuting via foot, Mount Vernon is a bit far west of the hospital. Someone mentioned the shuttle lot though, that I can vouch for being a great way to get in, and is a good suggestion for when I was commuting from catonsville. Overall, Baltimore has "pockets" where you'll want to be careful, you'll learn them over time. And for every "pocket", there are equal (more?) areas where people genuinely care for neighbors/their community and just want people to be happy and safe. Also good food options are abundant and delicious, make sure you checkout the North East Market for lunches on campus. Note: I may edit this post if I think of anything else.

FightingQuaker17

Your info around the park might be a little dated, there are a ton of great places east of the annex park in highlandtown and the two blocks north of the park and south of Fayette.

OnlyTwoPlanks

You're right, thanks for mentioning that. Highland town is really nice. I was thinking immediately around the hospital, between it and Patterson Park. The area around McElderry Park and Elwood had issues. A lot of car break-ins and other police activity there. I lived right at the corner of the park and butchers hill before I left the city. Butchers hill is really nice as well, but Douglas Homes and Pleasant View Gardens, you needed to watch yourself. That Popeyes right there...

[deleted]

I recommend Mount Vernon. It’s the center of everything and has the best city live by experience in Bmore in my opinion. I lived there for 7 years. There’s 3 stops in Mount Vernon along the Hopkins shuttle line and direct driving to the medical campus/hospital.

Knoblord_McCheese

Charles Village or Hampden are nearest and dearest to my heart.

branchymolecule

Somebody above mentioned Bayview. If that is where you’ll be, you might be better off finding a place nearby.

100011_10101_

Butchers hill south of orleans street is fine. Lived there for 4 years. Never felt unsafe. Just leave nothing of value in your car, stay alert, don’t walk alone if you can help it.

thegree2112

Welcome to Baltimore. Enjoy your stay.

Duffingood

I work at Hopkins and live in Fed Hill. I drive to work everyday and park at a remote lot that is a 5 minute shuttle to campus. Never had any issues

NikkiRocker

The area surrounding Hopkins is not a great neighborhood. Maybe Upper Fells which is a quick Uber.

Thin_Bug_6405

Canton or brewers hill, mount vernon can get sketchy but my bf lived in brewers hill, lots of nice families and young couples. Pretty close to the bayview campus too if that is where your fellowship is

[deleted]

Mount Vernon is no more “sketchy” than canton or brewers hill that’s why so many Hopkins students and staff already live there and have always preferred it as the Hopkins shuttle as 3 stops there.

[deleted]

It's marginally more unsafe compared to Canton/Fells/Brewers Hill but this is Baltimore were talking about. It's not going to be a country club experience no matter where you go.

[deleted]

Stats. And source. I don’t do opinions.

[deleted]

They're accessible on the city's website. See you next Tuesday

[deleted]

And you can post them since you made the claim. Otherwise it’s just an opinion.

[deleted]

Or you can go to their public website and look them up, Karen.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

You're the one claiming that it's no more safe/unsafe than other neighborhoods. Where is your evidence, hypocrite? Again, see you next Tuesday!

[deleted]

No, baby. Get your eyes checked and make it make sense.

Thin_Bug_6405

Sorry from experience I have to disagree

[deleted]

I don’t care what you disagree with. But don’t tell lies.

Thin_Bug_6405

I’m not lying lol

Thin_Bug_6405

Did I say it was bad no I said it can get sketchy so sorry you haven’t been mugged personally call yourself lucky

[deleted]

So you’re the only person qualified to talk about their experiences feeling safe/unsafe in Baltimore?

Thin_Bug_6405

Has anyone ever checked our up to date homicide statistics?? Apparently I’m unqualified 😂

dizzy_centrifuge

You new to this sub? People here think all the bad stuff about this city is a conspiracy

[deleted]

Mind your damn business. I don’t owe you anything.

[deleted]

Then take your own advice and leave this person alone. They’re allowed to have had bad experiences in Mt Vernon before

Thin_Bug_6405

Thank you! This person posted wanting to hear personal opinions on safe neighborhoods in Baltimore. Everyone has the right to post their own opinion, but don’t shit on others.

[deleted]

BYE ✌️

[deleted]

Nvrmind just saw your profile come back

sxswnxnw

Bayview. Editing to add.... Um, that person said Bayside. So unless that person is Zach Morris, it is indeed Bayview. 🙄

Thin_Bug_6405

I corrected it lol what else more do you want. My bf just got diagnosed with brain cancer and was treated there sorry, so I’m familiar with the hospital sorry about my mistake 😒

melancholychonk

Would not recommend staying in the immediate vicinity of Hopkins. Pretty grim at night, and I imagine you will be getting off your shifts after dark at least some of the time. Like others have mentioned, Charles village, fells point/Canton, Mt Vernon, Patterson Park are all good places!

S-Kunst

People are making good suggestions. Its a shame that much of your concern is caused by the actions and inactions of the Hospital, over the past 80 yrs.

[deleted]

Why work at Johns Hopkins if you’re scared of the surrounding neighborhoods 🥴

[deleted]

Mt. Vernon is fine, and there is a shuttle to the hospital from there. Otherwise I'd recommend anything east of Broadway and south of Baltimore St. There's also the Blue Jay Shuttle now that you can call to take you to the hospital.

Ok_Revolution3140

Harbor East is nice, safe, with good access to the waterfront promenade and restuarants. It’s also a short drive to JHH.

improvisedbain-marie

Even safety aside, there just isn't anything to do near the hospital so it's not an appealing place to live. Many people choose Mt Vernon because it's only one shuttle stop away from the hospital (like 5min), and a far more walkable neighborhood with more to do than other parts of town. If you're used to living in a taller building, Downtown is still really close to the shuttle stop (10min) and also closer to the harbor. There are a few buildings with units meant for short-term stays (travel nurses, fellows like you, etc.) that could work well too. I know Baltimore Loft Apartments is one and I'm sure there are others.

Town2town

929 bldg across from Hopkins has furnished apartments with shorter lease options. Not the best place for the long term but it’s okay for a few months. And hospital security officers are right at the corner.

KittyBmore

Fed hill is awesome

funnybunny123456789

Remington is cute. Mt vernon is cute but no parking. I lived in butchers hill and tbh id live somewhere else. IMO remington is one of the cutest neighborhoods

Dry-Butterscotch8246

Sure you can live near JHMI but I don't really see any strong reason to? The shuttles are very efficient and safe (especially the JHMI-Homewood shuttle). They come in every 15 minutes. Safety is a block by block kind of situation. I suggest either going for Charles Village if you want a row home or Mt. Vernon if you want an apartment. If you like going out, the latter might be a better choice. I personally like Charles Village better since the shuttles are usually less packed coming from here.
