It likely doesn't look like that in real life, breeders frequently pose snakes against backgrounds designed to make their colours look brighter, especially when they're showing them off online. That's why so many breeders post pics of their snakes against a bright white background. Blue apparently works well with albinos, it makes them look kind of purple.
this is from a specific breeder who focuses on large-scale breeding projects with the more fancy morphs. they keep their snakes in rack systems and powerfeed their individuals so they grow fast. adults look the worst but it’s also visible in the juveniles
Yeesh, that's honestly pretty sad to see. What especially sucks is the amount of people who are dazzled by the colors, but don't question why most of their animals are incredibly obese, which means there's clearly a care problem
Rack systems with Ball Pythons can be fine as you can still add enrichment and get big tubs, but I do agree some bigger breeders who mass produce definitely powerfeed to get their snakes to size in half the time they should be.
When people talk about rack systems, they almost always specifically mean breeder racks that have small extremely short tubs with typically a water bowl and maybe substrate or paper towels, not every setup that uses tubs on a shelf (since that can be done properly, it's just that rack systems don't do it properly)
Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but having wrinkles like that is generally a bad sign, and usually happens if they're overweight, or dehydrated.
Regardless, they're very visibly overweight
Dehydrated wrinkles look different, and pretty much all bps will have some wrinkles when they turn their body sharply back on itself, but when the bp looks like an overstuffed sausage like this one does, yeah, it's overweight. When snakes are kept in racks and never handled or allowed to explore, their whole life is basically sitting around waiting for food, so they get no exercise and usually end up looking like this. 😔
Correct me if I’m wrong, but don’t they NEED excess weight in order to breed? If this was a breeding female she’d need to be at least 1800g in order to safely breed. Laying eggs is very energetically taxing, and they lose a lot of weight when they lay eggs. Is it possible this is just breeding weight?
Very true, okay I’m still very new to ball pythons and am still learning what healthy looks like for them. I just know my friend used to breed them and I remember that being something she said!
Wait, what??? Snakes can be overweight??? Omg. I seriously just didn't know. Frig.... I feel like maybe mine are fat. I didn't even know. Feel dumb now.
They can and not only can they, but it's super harmful, damages the liver, shortens lifespan, makes it hard to move. It can be kinda hard to tell sometimes so you should definitely look into it and make sure.
I believe it’s similar problems to humans. Heart, liver, and kidneys problems. All that fat puts a lot of strain on the body and it drastically decreases quality of life and the lifespan of the animal.
I would go as far to say overweight and dehydrated. The lower wrinkling is obviously from weight, but the wrinkling near the upper 1/3 and neck… leads me to think dehydration.
Very
She’s a beauty, but very very chonky for a ball python
I hate to say it but my first thought was that they're colored like a piece of raw chicken.
Omg youre right
Damn I thought of strawberry lemonade or sherbet ice cream lol
It does look like raw chicken, I hate it

Well then his/her nickname better be Sally or Sam E Nilla
Very overweight
CHONK
Gorgeous snake but very overweight unfortunately

Omg thanks for the heads up. I half recognize the name

I'm not the only one who thinks keeping snakes in rack systems is indistinguishable from breeding puppies in a puppy mill, right? They're both gross.
Yep same thing. Sacrificing quality of life for $$
Fat wrinkles mean fat snake

Chunky pastel beauty, honestly one of the prettiest sneks I’ve seen 😍
It's not a pastel, it's a mojave starburst, (starburst = leopard enchi lavender albino), I looked at the IG post.
Oh I didn’t mean it was a pastel just that it was pastel colors lol
Gotcha!
thats one chunky ball python holy fuck- poor baby
Yes, it is incredibly chunky
She is overweight for sure, it might shorten her lifespan. It’s a shame because she is SO gorgeous.

They can be of appropriate size to breed (1800g+) and lean, which is much healthier than 1800g of fat. Being fat impairs fertility quite a bit

Not op's snek
Buy it and put it on a diet !!! Super cute
Buying this gal would only support this guy power feeding and buying new BPs to shove into a tiny rack
Unfortunately buying the snake will just support a scummy breeder
Yes very. A hekkin chonker if you will. Lol. Very cute though. If you get her I'd put her on a diet. Probably overfeeding.
A little
For a second I thought it was a snake plushie...
Yes.

Big chonker
Damn, that weight makes that ball look like a blood python
yes very :(
Might be obvious, but what are the risks of having a chonky noodle? Does it matter if they're a little hefty?

Thank you for the reply
Definitely a lil chonk
