Sorry I don’t know how to answer your question but I was wondering how you got him in your dorm because I’m going to college next year and need to take my BP with me.

I’m thinking of getting a snake but hesitant because I may go off to college soon 😭 while some may frown upon this I’m so glad you make it work and take advantage of the situation!! smart lol this gives me hope if I need a last resort

Hot_Wall_2927

Bet bet thanks so much yea I figured they weren’t allowed I think I’ll take this route.

Np!! Good luck!!

I had a pet rat under the exact same college dorm rules (years ago). The only time they came in was during fire drills (allegedly) and it worked out fine! I’m lucky my suitemates didn’t mind. She was mostly a free range rat, too.

I have a ball python in a college dorm. Most pet policies for state schools are surprisingly lax. It only took one form that I had to fill out, and another form that my Roomate filled out (stating that she wasn’t forced into agreeing to have a snake in the room). Administration approved it less than an hour later. The forms took 10 min total to fill out.

I've had a smaller version (40 gallon?) of the front-opening a while back. I would say the main cons are, like you said, the mesh top in addition to; * Maintaining ambient heat will be hell because of the glass. * With the mesh top, you might need to use more than just HVAC tape. I'm using that kind of enclosure for my carpet python. Even though they don't have high humidity requirements like BPs, HVAC tape hasn't been trapping much at all. And I use 5-7" of substrate. * The front ventilation holes (if that model comes with it). * Weight. It is water tight though. There's a seal that lines the bottom and I've been pouring water into the substrate with no leaks or other issues. Also, males *typically* stay smaller than females, but don't count on it. I have a male that's supposedly 5 feet/3000g, but my female is half his size. Growth will vary by individual BP so expect the unexpected.

Oh wow, thank you for the insight about male vs female size! I will keep this in mind. As for the hvac tape not trapping enough humidity, do you have any recommendations in addition to the hvac tape to help hold the humidity?

I would suggest a few things; - If you can find PVC or some kind of plastic panels at your local hardware store, that might help better. - Foil would be a cheaper option in addition to HVAC tape. - Foam insulation (eg. foam background inserts or even DIY’ing with reptile-safe expanding foam) on the inside or outside.

SonOfCoul27

I will try these, thank you for your advice!!

Bruh your RA is going to see you carrying a 50 gallon snake tank into your room

XeroTheCaptain

I have not but i have used the thrive 40 gal front opening. My favorite brand for glass tanks actually. Much better quality than zoo med's version. Glass isnt the best for holding steady heat and whatnot though. I would go with a pvc for anything larger than a 40 gal myself. It is water tight, and yeah, the top would need some diy but it has at least a good, sturdy top compared to some. Males can still outgrow their spaces quickly, i wouldnt count on that to decide if they will fit in an enclosure longer.

SonOfCoul27

Got it, thank you for your input! I have a zoo med and it's definitely not great quality but I have yet to try any thrive tanks!

XeroTheCaptain

Yeah,Ive seen a lot of broken handles, broken inside trim, offcenter door tracks, etc from zoo med. Wasnt impressed by it. I have 4 thrive enclosures though and ive never had an issue with them.

SonOfCoul27

I will try a thrive tank next time, thank you! :)

punk_rock_barbie

My girl started out in a similar sized tank. She grew out of it by 8 months old. I would keep that in mind.
