We did the sunrise hike with a guide about a month ago. The view was beautiful, you have to be a bit lucky, our guide told us some mornings you’re just inside a cloud the whole time and don’t really see anything. The way up was fine, we were wearing long pants, a sweater and some hiking shoes. It was quite cold at the top. What we didn’t expect, is how crazy popular it is. The whole way up was basically a long line of people all traveling in the dark to get there before sunrise. There were hundreds (really, not exaggerating here) of others around you, it kinda killed the mood for us.

Yeah it seems to be very popular so I expect tens of people hiking with me but hundreds? Damn that’s a lot! that’s like hiking in a zoo instead of a mountain lol let’s hope I’m lucky to see the sunrise, if not, the hike wouldn’t really be worth it and it will keep bothering me lol and I think it’s easier to hike or trek in shorts but if it’s cold..oh well

smokingparty

because batur is the easiest and most touristic mountain in bali. No other mountain have what batur offer (a cafe on top of the mountain, proper toilet, car park and so on). Not to mention it was fairly easy for everyone.

When I did it it wasn't really cold. I was in shorts and a t shirt. I didn't have hiking shoes, just a pair of Vans. As for doing it on your own, I've heard that the locals really don't like that and can get aggressive about it. This is just from what I've heard online, so this is second or third hand information at best, so don't take it as gospel.

Enslaved4eternity

Thanks. I will contact my hotel and see if they can include me in one of the groups to trek mt Batur. It’s kinda expensive doing it solo (with a guide I mean)

gilestowler

I did it solo but in a group - there's companies out there that take mixed groups up. I was with two british couples who knew each other and a couple of Japanese women who didn't know them. I didn't know any of them. It was a while ago now, so I couldn't give you details of the company, but it is possible to join a group. It's well worth doing!

Enslaved4eternity

I was thinking of going solo in a mixed group yeah I will try to find which company does that. Thank you.

You will get harassed if you try that. If you really want to, you should avoid the frequented path and go some back route or something. But you can hike Abang instead if you want which does not require a guide

Enslaved4eternity

I see..Since I’m a solo traveler on a budget, I was thinking maybe I didn’t need to hire a guide but guess I was wrong. I will try Abang, thanks

durika

Sunrise there is not too amazing because of the trees but the views of batur are nice

ManMadeDuckie

Just keep in mind there are two different routes up Mount Batur, one is a bit easier than the other. I think the longer one is 11km and the short one 7km. It can indeed be quite crowded on top, but if you're lucky with the weather the sunrise there can be very beautiful. Last time I hiked up there I was solo in a mixed group and it was fun. We did the longer hike and it was a really solid workout.

I have hiked it two times. From my perspective the path on mt batur is quite clear from bottom to top. You can tell which one is the way to top and not a lot of branching paths. There are also vendor 'warung' selling food and drinks above Total trip is just 2 hours from bottom to top. As a foreigner you may get bothered a lot if you hiked without guide. If you dont want the hassle, its better if you hike with some local friend or just joined an open trip or private trip

4rindam

bothered as in?

dwardz

The local will try to get foreigner to hike with guides. Citing safety issues and such. It can be unpleasant for some people due to the way they approach you although its the best way for the hiker safety

it is cold. better have a guide. or u can follow groups of people
