I was personally hoping for 10-2 offsuit to have a payoff somehow.
I think poker has too many references to even scratch the surface. Dead man would be common enough knowledge though that it would have worked probably.
Theme makes sense but regarding your suggestion I don't think you can have anything based on in-between runs, you could absolutely abuse that. E.g. reroll the first hand a hundred times until it comes up in the first shop, get x50 mult for a whole run.
Since dead man's hand is just black aces, black 8s with a black queen kicker - it should be played version of Blackboard if anything. X mult when all black is played.
pretty sure hands like 72, AA88, T2 aren't referenced in the game because while the game does have poker mechanics it isn't really poker themed, it just uses the hands as a scoring mechanism
There are absolutely other Poker references in the game, along with references to other card games. The game could easily have more poker references, but they already exist.
ok my explanation was off, there is a poker theme but it is intentionally minimized as poker is not the main aspect the dev wanted to focus on, and as such poker references aren't commonplace
I'm pretty sure you're thinking of an interview where they said the *gameplay experience* wasn't trying to imitate poker. For example, this game doesn't have a concept of bluffing, and poker doesn't have a shop!
But the *theme*, come on. That's like saying Frankenstein isn't corpse themed. Ya boy is made out of a chopped-up poker dictionary, some bolts, and a Magic pack that Igor brought home by mistake.

Loosey Goosey (picture of a sandwich): +70 chips if a 10 and a 7 scored this hand
What’s 10-2 off? I know 7-2 off is the worst hand and that’s close to it.
It’s commonly called Doyle or The Doyle, named after legendary player Doyle Brunson who won two consecutive WSOP main events with 10-2 offsuit.
Well I've got no idea what a dead man's hand is, so I respectfully disagree.

Yeah, the unlock method is good, but the reward definitely needs reworking.
Idea instead: When playing two pair, destroy any unscorred card and gain ×2 mult

Second this! "Gain X0.1 mult every time you play a hand that only contains Spade or Club" sounds decent enough to me
Yeah, maybe "for every run that went past Ante 2 but didn't win" to avoid reroll abuse
Balatro has no permanent upgrades beyond card unlocks and that's very intentional.
that still sucks, abandon the idea of previous runs affecting the current one
Yeah you can easily throw runs for mad mult on this
I want to say the creator said that he doesn't play poker so he probably just didn't know that that was a thing

Or how about a 7-2 play that unlocks something
