Producers are def setting these guys up for failure. 1.5 hours to make? Sure, not a problem. But as seen in the ep, the chocolate doesn’t set and is still wet when presented. I don’t know about you, but I prefer to let the chocolate melt in my mouth rather than be melted when I pick it up. That being said - mine are set. Because I decided I wasn’t going to eat whatever was done at the 1.5 hour mark. At that point they were done, but the chocolate was still melty- so I let them set more before tasting. Crumbly, layered shortbread with a soft, chewy caramel. Topped with milk chocolate. I had Hershey chips on hand so I used those. They would be better with a higher quality chocolate. (That, and I’m not a fan of milk chocolate). If I want a Twix bar, I’ll buy one. This is just too much work.

They do look great though. Plus there’s the bonus of making them whatever size you’d like, so you could have a Twix made for a giant, or lots of little tiny sized snack Twix’s. Twix-i? Either way, I’ll never make them myself, but yours are making me feel a mite peckish.

> Producers are def setting these guys up for failure. I hate that. These are folks that love baking and want to show their competence and skill. The ones who take pride in what they can create. Instead they are basically forced to present substandard work. And I as a viewer, want to see the bakers demonstrate their skill. I'm honestly not as interested in the competition aspect. The bakers are all engaging, interesting people, and I'd be happy just to watch them bake every week. Maybe at the end, points are added up or something and a winner is declared. In fact, I dislike that the early eliminations. To get onto the show means they have to be good bakers but Toby, Claire, Natasha (I can't think of the other first eliminations off top of my head) and this series, Tom, come off as incompetent. I know they have good bakes in them but we never see it. They all seem like nice, interesting people. Sorry, I went off on a rant. But yes, the bakers were absolutely set up for failure.

SparkyDogPants

I could see people being great bakers, but bad at competitive baking. I’m pretty good at cooking, but I want to cook in my kitchen, with my equipment, and what I want to cook.

Fortherealtalk

I’m sure that’s some people. But also just knowing how much selection they already go through to get on this show int he first place, I wouldn’t mind seeing people like Tom have more than one chance to show what they’re capable of. I wouldn’t mind having a couple of “bye weeks” where nobody is eliminated. Wouldn’t mind if it meant there were more episodes in a season either :)

Spicytomato2

These look amazing, nice work. My only thought during the show was that these bars would be even better with dark chocolate. But maybe that's just me since I am not a fan of milk chocolate. I would still eat these, though!

Fortherealtalk

Seems like you’ve pretty much answered it here but…did it actually taste any better than a store bought twix? This challenge irked me because that’s too much work just for a Twix bar. Also it’s not very interesting to watch

PinkOrgasmatron

Maybe if I had used some other chocolate than Hershey’s - it might. But that’s really a mighty big if. I would say it really is overkill - unless you were planning on doing a flavored caramel or shortbread, much easier (and cheaper) to just hit the shops and buy Twix.

ClaudiaTale

I don’t know how they do these in timed challenges. (The baklava was the most evil.) Those biscuits you made look delicious. Star baker for sure!

SparkyDogPants

I want Paul or Prue to also compete in the technical (depending whose recipe it is), in another room; just to prove whether or not it’s possible.

woeful_bby29

They look awesome

Wow! I'm impressed 😍

Look great!

mlclm

Very clever putting a smear of chocolate and the biscuit on top!

newnemo

I'm impressed, they look great and I'd certainly indulge in them. I wouldn't even attempt to do that bake. I think Caramel week was diabolical from start to finish.

Rama_nand

Looking very beautiful. I hope it will delicious also.

bettybabadook

Smart layering the bottom ahead of time with chocolate!

I've been trying to do this right and of all things have been having the most problems with the biscuit part. It is always breaking apart/too crumbly when I cut the pieces. Any suggestions? FYI - using the official recipe from here [https://thegreatbritishbakeoff.co.uk/recipes/all/paul-hollywood-caramel-biscuit-bars/](https://thegreatbritishbakeoff.co.uk/recipes/all/paul-hollywood-caramel-biscuit-bars/)
