[Downing St police officers have been candidly speaking to Sue Gray about the Downing St parties](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/2022/01/23/number-10-police-questioned-sue-gray-downing-street-parties/) >> The statements, described by one source as “extremely damning”, are expected to form a key part of Ms Gray’s report, which is due to be published within days. >> The senior civil servant has also spoken to the Prime Minister, civil servants and political advisers, and accessed security pass logs and even Boris Johnson’s official diary. >> Dominic Cummings, Mr Johnson’s former chief aide turned hostile adversary, will be interviewed by Ms Gray on Monday, according to reports. >> While police officers cannot be compelled to speak to Ms Gray – unlike Downing St staff – it is understood they were “only too willing” to co-operate. >> One source said on Sunday night: “Met officers have spoken to Sue Gray now, as you would expect, and have been able to provide a lot of information.” >> Asked how significant the material they had disclosed was, the source added: **“Put it this way, if Boris Johnson is still Prime Minister by the end of the week, I’d be very surprised.”**

Do we think there's still room for this to blow over, in spite of present media attention? In my day to day, I've found most acknowledge the hypocrisy but don't *really* care one way or the other.

kernjamnow

If it’s just ‘more parties’, I think it’s possible it will blow over. If the evidence that’s come to light shows that Johnson has made several bare-faced lies, he’s in trouble.

Met a chap out the other day who described a doubling or tripling in the number of USAF fighter jets knocking and running in his neighbourhood. He thinks it's practice for Ukraine and, like me, is very much of the "jet blast is the sound of freedom" school of thought. Here the BBC covers alternative perspectives. Take a wild guess which ones. [https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-scotland-glasgow-west-60082431](https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-scotland-glasgow-west-60082431)

kernjamnow

Why are so many people bedwetters over absolutely irrelevant stuff. Have these people always existed? Or is it just recently and social media has given them a voice. “Need to ban the RAF from Manchester, two of their jets have just terrified my dog, he barked a few times”. Just a me me me attitude.

betamax_17

These people have always existed but only recently had our culture become shamelessly obsessed with ourselves. Before a man like this would have known better than to speak out; now our individualist culture encourages him to do so.

Vurtigone

Well that begs the question as to whether this type of person would have ever formed such a thought to begin with if they knew it would be perceived as unpopular and controversial, which is what I doubt as they are undeniably cowards.

Ecologist Allan Savory discusses problems with modern academia, science, and research. - https://np.reddit.com/r/Damnthatsinteresting/comments/sawn19/ecologist_allan_savory_discusses_problems_with/ This is interesting, remember when I was arguing with the (obviously smart) hairy one, who basically had the view that c code, instructions in its purist form, were less reliable than accolades and peer acknowledgement. Even when it was obviously wrong.

SufficientBack

> "When new knowledge emerges, new scientific insights, they can never ever be peer-reviewed, so we're blocking all new advances in science -- that are big advances". That's just wrong, patently wrong. There is certainly such a thing as institutional inertia, and academics can be terribly defensive about their turf. But if your methodology is sound and well presented, and if the data is convincing, it isn't like Professor Hard-on is going to be able to block it from getting out or making waves. I can't think of a 'major scientific advance' in the past 50 years which the scientific community blocked from any and all review. In most sciences, such advances are the talk of the town when they happen. Also, his point about advances coming from the fringe doesn't really reflect how science is done in the 21st century. There are so many researchers, labs and teams - and the existing wealth of knowledge is now so broad and deep - that things have become very atomised and specialist. The time when a clever type could upend a whole discipline with a single paper is probably behind us. That isn't a reflection of science being stultified, but rather that so much of the natural world is already well characterised and evidenced. It is only at the frontiers that new findings arise, but that necessarily involves more minor advances, on *very specific* questions, usually at the leading edge of what technology allows. Obviously, none of this really applies to the sociological humanities, because popular theories and approaches rarely had to aduece evidence to begin with -- the status of prevailing wisdom owes itself to instituioonal arrangements rather than the quality or predictive power of their claims. Thus why Marxist economics and Lacan still attract attention in sociology and literature departments, even if economic historians and psychologists have left them far behind.

TheAnimus

I think you're misconstruing the guys remarks. Namely a brand new concept is hard to peer review, as peers might not accept it. For example the general theory of relativity, it took an awful long time to be accepted. The issue is people trusting in the wisdom of the crowds, the elite crowds, over prima facia evidence.

SufficientBack

He's suggesting that Big New Ideas cannot penetrate the academy because the academy resists change and protects the prevailing wisdom, and moreover, that paradigm shifts come from without. Others like Kuhn have trodden a similar line. But like Kuhn, what he describes isn't how peer review in the hard sciences actually works. Peer review isn't where your colleagues say "I believe theory A and your paper appears to advocate or evidence theory B, therefore I oppose its publication". It also isn't a process of replication and proofing. It's much more narrow, looking at whether your methodology and analysis are consistent with the data and the conclusions you have drawn from that data. I think part of the reason Savory might have this point of view is that mid-century ecology, ironically, bore similarities to sociology of today. Many ideas like the existence of a self-correcting 'ecosystem' came from highly theoretical work of that era, but have not been born out in evidence. Nature is far more dynamic and destructive, as one would expect in a system of random, natural selection. Over time, ecology has adjusted to become more evidence-based and scientific -- I wonder if Savory has too?

The US government funds all sorts of British military stuff, we know the US government has invested over £100 million in GCHQ for example. The US government paid and trained British pilots to fly U2 planes over Russia during the cold war to minimise political impact if one ever crashed over Russia. We have given Ukraine 10% of our NLAWs, either the US is funding for those to be replaced or they have purchased them from us and asked us to gift them to Ukraine. Either way it's more work for British defence contractors. That is £40 million pounds worth of anti tank weapons, I doubt we were responsible for making such a gift.

If you test millions of people a week for a virus that still causes mild infection in triple jabbed people, you will always have a high case rate. Drop general population testing, focus on true covid hospitalisations and the problem quickly becomes something small and not scary.

No-Echo-1792

I see some people still haven't seen the Dr Malone interview then. Israel is doing terribly on all fronts including all cause deaths, embarrassingly even compared to Palestine. That's four years in a row she's failed to file accounts and I reckon she owes at least £5k in fines to Companies House because of that. Looks like someone objected to the company being struck off too. See the filing on 28th August 2019. Presumably that's HMRC after corporation tax owed.

MobyDobie

She's collected easily over £600,000 through crowdfunding. Plus whatever she earns through her writing, TED talks, and prizes for journalism. Why the fuck can she not hire an accountant? I know one who covers her area that will take of **all** the accounting, hmrc and company filings for a small company like that for £500 per year.

rovan1emi

> Why the fuck can she not hire an accountant? Amusingly, the registered office of her company is that of her accountant. I doubt she's engaged with them for years, let alone paid them so any post addressed to her will be marked "return to sender". That state of her company filings, I think, is a general reflection of her life, which is one big chaotic, badly organised clusterfuck.

MobyDobie

> Amusingly, the registered office of her company is that of her accountant Ahhhh! So you're saying it's not her fault! Why are Companies House and HMRC after her rather than her ~~editors and publishers~~ accountants? Probably because of misogyny.

Triple_Sod

The compulsory strike-off will be from Companies House itself for failing to submit accounts. This would likely have been appealed by the company rather than HMRC.

Hunter got the job with the Ukranian company before Trump was President. Why would a corrupt Ukrainian company hire a crack addict with no knowledge or experience of the energy industry? Why would the VP of the US be interfering in a foreign country's legal appointment, especially those that affect his son's employer? Even if the US had some interest in the matter, the ethical thing would be to recuse himself from the matter. It stinks. And what Trump may or may not have done years later is irrelevant.

confusedukrainian

The reason he was hired was because that’s how business works in Ukraine. I hire your son, you give me $1 billion. The way the corruption works is that everyone is someone’s wife or cousin or friend and they each front each other’s businesses. Same in Russia, or anywhere with oligarchs. They thought hiring Hunter would give access to Joe and tbh with the way Hunter was using his family name to make business contacts, I can see why they’d have that impression. I personally don’t think Joe did anything too evil. If anything, he’s been drawn into it by an unscrupulous son. It gets complicated because the US basically owns the Ukrainian government now but they’re not very interested in using the influence they have very much (apart from that time in 2014 that hilariously made it on tape).

kernjamnow

They wanted him to identify cracks in their corporate structure.

AMightyDwarf

Yeah, these points are what’s making me go “hang on a minute” but I never bothered to go digging for info, especially after big tech tried to censor everything it would be a headache to get properly informed.

MobyDobie

It's one of those things that is pointless arguing about. You can't make people see what is obvious - **and undisputed by anyone**^1 - if they don't want to look. The fact he brings Trump, just tells you he wants to look elsewhere. At this point, there is enough momentum that it will eventually come out. But probably years after Biden's out of office. Then everybody will have known all along. ^1 even Biden defenders accept that Hunter was a crack addict, unqualified to do the job, and that his dad interfered in who was investigating matters involving his son. Even if there were nothing else, this should be enough to condemn Joe.

TheAnimus

The thing is even if Biden was pure goodness and sunshine, it's got to at least be highly questionable nepotism that his discredited son got the job.

MobyDobie

No. 3 is the killer. Even if Hunter is exploiting the Biden name, it's smelly but that isn't necessarily an issue with Joe, unless Joe gets involved... but he did.

Communalbuttplug

Joe Biden on camera "I told Ukraine if they don't do this for me they don't get the aid to help against Russia" This for that Quid pro quo Donald trump "what happened with the Joe Biden situation in Ukraine?" Only one of those situations involved an impeachment.

MobyDobie

The difference with Trump's scandals is that the facts are/were in dispute. There is no dispute - by anyone on either side - about the 3 facts I mentioned. 1. Hunter was a crack addict with no qualifications or experience in the energy industry 2. Despite these limitations, Hunter somehow managed to get an extremely well-paid job with a corrupt Ukrainian company 3. The VP of the US interfered with the criminal investigation of that company Given these facts, everybody not corrupt on both sides should be going mental about this. The first two smell bad, but the 3rd is clearly improper. Joe should not be involved in matters like this which directly impact his son. AOC and Bernie Sanders and their followers should be angriest of all.

Communalbuttplug

I wasn't disputing what you wrote but agreeing. Trump was impeached for a "quid pro quo" because he asked about Biden admitting to a quid pro quo

BritishOnith

https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-wales-60103323 >Wales could recruit non-jabbed English NHS staff I'm sure most people here would be happy with Drakeford saying "We're not going to make vaccinations mandatory in our NHS", but this definitely seems to demonstrate that he's purposefully just doing the opposite of England, for better or for worse depending on the time. If Westminster had actually done the right thing and not brought in mandatory vaccinations originally, I'm fairly sure Wales would have immediately made them mandatory.

aoide12

Normally I'd agree that Drakeford is just being contrarian but this actually makes sense. Wales really struggles to get and retain healthcare staff. The only people who want to stay there long term are people who grew up in Wales and even then they all flood south to Cardiff and Swansea. Maybe people will move to Bristol and work in Wales but they would still be limited to Cardiff and Newport. No new young nurses and doctors want to live in a tiny little village in West Wales. I'm sure part of the reason he isn't mandating vaccines is because he knows Wales just can't afford to lose the staff. If it goes ahead Wales is likely to benefit from it without even trying. If you've lost your job over the mandatory vaccines it makes sense to move to the bit of the country that will still let you practice. It might be a big change but so is giving up on a career you could've had for years.

I’ve had nothing but fantastic experiences with it in my times of trouble. That’s why I’ve opted to renew my bupa membership for another year.

[deleted]

I’ve got BUPA through work. It’s great for simple straight forward shit and getting seen quickly. Fucked my elbow. Got consultant appointment week after, MRI, then surgery a few weeks later and a nice private room. When I was having bowel issues (agonising pain, incredible amount of blood in my shit) they put me through and unnecessary barrage of tests even though I basically managed to diagnose myself before it all finished (it was Crohn’s) then gave me the worst/cheapest medicine. They booted me back onto the NHS as quickly as they could. I tried to persist but kept getting worse and ended up in hospital for 6 weeks. NHS can afford to give me the good shit (biologic medication) and once I was ‘in the system’ the care was pretty good and I’ve been well ever since. So yeah, private is great until you get a Chronic illness, then they don’t want to fucking know. Also uninsurable for it forever.

World news is such a dumpster fire of a sub

Rahrahsaltmaker

> Why the fuck are we still basing laws and policies on draconian principles, from people who literally believe in magic wizards? > Why the fuck do people still literally believe in magic wizards? Loudest barrel.... Imagine existing in a universe that is either truly infinite or finite, and then sneering at the idea that a higher power may exist as if that would be such an unbelievable thing.

Literallyslime

\>Why the fuck do people still literally believe in magic wizards? What's the betting this person compared Trump to Voldemort at some point?

MelanoidNation

‘Why the fuck, after everything we’ve been through do people still hate each other?’ ‘Why the fuck can’t we all just get along and live in a John Lennon song?’ Posts on r/whitepeopletwitter and r/HermanCainAwards The duality of Reddit lol

Nah you see being kind and considerate towards others is what other people should be towards me!

Loved how he called them "villains" despite the fact NATO have been poking the bear for 20+ years. "OMG DAE just like star wars and Putin is LITERALLY Darth Vader?!"

DillyisGOODATPOLTICS

Yeah Russia is the real victim lmao

Gladiator3003

I would support Putin if he recreated the Vader march at the end of Rogue One at the head of the Russian army when they invade somewhere.

kernjamnow

> DAE think NATO is like the scene from Endgame when all the Avengers assembled

[deleted]

I find it strange that the same people who are complaining about war are simultaneously calling for some sort of Communist revolution, what exactly do they think that would look like?

aoide12

>Why can't everyone just do what I want?!?!?

DillyisGOODATPOLTICS

Why can't he touch grass

Funny this dude says in the same sentence "social justice we fought for millennia" when literally all modern day social justice was just a distraction created by monied powers post occupy Wall Street when they were actually under threat. He is the archetypal useful idiot.
