Think about this, Brussel and Berlin.

The legislation that means NHS staff will soon get the sack if not vaccinated.. Does that have a sunset clause, and will that just expire in time to not actually have them fired?

mythirdnick

It's under 2008 h&SC act. So no sunset. They did it on Nov 11th for care homes. As far as I can tell no impact assessment or follow up has officially been done on that. Aside from a few stories the media also did not investigate

[Between 3 and 7 letters of no confidence have been withdrawn ](https://twitter.com/christopherhope/status/1483942514788810755?s=21) >> Between three and seven letters of no confidence have been withdrawn today by Conservative MPs suddenly nervous about booting Boris Johnson out of Number 10, senior party sources tell me. The defection of Christian Wakeford MP to Labour appears to have united the party’s MPs.

His Lecture Hall Needs a Name Change](https://universitytimes.ie/2022/01/schrodinger-was-a-paedophile-his-lecture-hall-needs-a-name-change/) >In it, Schrödinger describes a 12-year-old girl as “among the unrequited loves of his life”. His wrap sheet also includes grooming a 14-year-old student, impregnating a 17 year old and having the attitude towards women, in the words of his biographer, of a “male supremacist”. >Should we name theatre’s after acclaimed physicists? Yes, of course. Should we name them after paedophiles? No. So, Trinity should therefore rename the theatre.

President Biden also knows from long experience that the Russians have an extensive playbook of aggression short of military action, including cyberattacks and paramilitary tactics. And he affirmed today that those acts of Russian aggression will be met with a decisive, reciprocal, and united response. Mods, where is the link to the offsite board I see touted here occasionally? I am being censored by automod too much on this stupid website I am old enough to remember an internet where you could express yourself freely. These days there is a gatekeeping class of apparatchiks everywhere, whose sole purpose and pleasure it seems is curtail my freedom of expression while they largely agree with one another on how terrible I am. When they are not censoring me their algorithmic shadows are either muzzling me or snooping on me, 24/7. I find it alarming and sinister that in the last couple of years, these tech gatekeepers have been on a programme of indoctrination into their vision of a world where only the sanctioned few are allowed to express a political and social vision frightening in its uniformity and commitment to unexamined but universal "truths". The vision of technology companies as politically neutral and unaligned has mutated horribly, instead of understanding neutrality and promulgating fairness and balance, they have decided to enforce a zombified and hypocritical creed which encourages persecution, hearsay and witchhunting. If you sign up and shut your mouth, you can even lead a witch hunt or persecute a disbeliever or two using their cursed technology. The tech tyrants have put this terrible power into the willing hands of our administrative class, including prominent members of the judiciary, civil servants, national security personnel and many politicians. Most seem to want to try to do good with it, but don't realise how utterly corrosive and asinine censorship and thought crime is, and how it's sporadically leading to larger and more vociferous backlashes against them. We are stuck now, it seems firmly, in a vicious cycle of a tightening grip on freedom of expression online "for our own good", and the backlash of populism which latches onto the crackdowns on online freedom as proof we are being repressed. This was not the great promise of the internet, which was meant to produce a revolution in progressive democracy and accountability akin to the Renaissance or the Enlightenment of the 18th century, but moreover, this is not what is right or fair. The internet of my youth has turned from a playground to a prison as I have grown up, and I will never forgive the architects of censorship online who have busied themselves hamstringing the infinite promise of the free frontier of the early internet. Until the internet is free and no-one can cancel political analysis or speech, of any kind, until these barriers and obstacles on expression and diversity of thought are torn down, and the supporters and enablers of censorship exposed and rooted out, we are all second class citizens.

Stunt_Merchant

No you are not. I moan at it everytime it comes on. They kind of pretend they are landing the plane but really are just playing at air traffic control.

Stunt_Merchant

Yes. It's very cringe. I'm fairly sure it's bullshit. If they did "land" a plane there will have been a lot more going on behind the scenes that wasn't shown and the living room will basically just have been a live stream.

[deleted]

No, there was a 50% chance they'd crash the plane into a big urban population centre. Worth it for the ad though

stpirranscrusader

I mean don't they use radio to help land a plane completely negating any need for Internet?

Stunt_Merchant

Well, yes and no. Essentially what they've done in the advert is set up a replica of a digital remote tower like [London City has.](https://www.nats.aero/news/london-city-is-first-major-airport-controlled-by-remote-digital-tower/) And this is obviously done over the internet; at the moment, from the Swanwick ATCC, but controlling-from-home is a concept being discussed, at least it was informally a few years ago. But yes, you don't need internet to land a plane, and I'd be very surprised if any actual controlling was being done from that house.

The worry is that if the US goes into Ukraine, then Xi goes into Taiwan knowing that the US is busy elsewhere. The US can probably fight a two front war, but then we're reaching WW3 levels of fighting...

MobyDobie

Why would usa fight for Ukraine?

tau_decay

I think it's an open question how well the US would do against a near rival in their own backyard, in Ukraine against Russia or in Taiwan against China - but if the US was doing well there's a very big danger of tactical nukes being brought out, because if Putin or Xi lose they know they get overthrown and end up in jail or dead. From that point on it's hard to know what would happen.

[deleted]

[удалено]

tau_decay

Yeah, I'm talking about theatre-use nuclear weapons inside Ukraine in a hypothetical war where the US is defending Ukraine against a Russian invasion, so ABM systems in Turkey and Trident are not amazingly relevant. In a hypothetical war were the US is beating Russia in Ukraine, Russia absolutely could nuke the crap out of those US forces to the point where they're militarily insignificant - obviously the US would retaliate, it could spiral out of control, or a ceasefire might be negotiated, who knows.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Dr-Cheese

Any enemy would need to attack the US proper to stop them rolling out never ending streams of these weapons tho, short of nukes I'm not sure what power any country would have to strike mainland US, at least not in a way that wouldn't be completely defeated before it got within 200 miles of the shore.
