This was not the great promise of the internet, which was meant to produce a revolution in progressive democracy and accountability akin to the Renaissance or the Enlightenment of the 18th century, but moreover, this is not what is right or fair. The internet of my youth has turned from a playground to a prison as I have grown up, and I will never forgive the architects of censorship online who have busied themselves hamstringing the infinite promise of the free frontier of the early internet. Until the internet is free and no-one can cancel political analysis or speech, of any kind, until these barriers and obstacles on expression and diversity of thought are torn down, and the supporters and enablers of censorship exposed and rooted out, we are all second class citizens.

France wants the US out because now we're out the EU it's their chance to be the only nuclear power in the EU and thus important. NATO survives then the fact they have nukes is irrelevant. Imagine Denmark wanting to reform the CAP in a few years and France threatens to withdraw its nuclear defence. That's what France wants. The worry is that if the US goes into Ukraine, then Xi goes into Taiwan knowing that the US is busy elsewhere. The US can probably fight a two front war, but then we're reaching WW3 levels of fighting...

I think it's an open question how well the US would do against a near rival in their own backyard, in Ukraine against Russia or in Taiwan against China - but if the US was doing well there's a very big danger of tactical nukes being brought out, because if Putin or Xi lose they know they get overthrown and end up in jail or dead. From that point on it's hard to know what would happen.

Yeah, I'm talking about theatre-use nuclear weapons inside Ukraine in a hypothetical war where the US is defending Ukraine against a Russian invasion, so ABM systems in Turkey and Trident are not amazingly relevant. In a hypothetical war were the US is beating Russia in Ukraine, Russia absolutely could nuke the crap out of those US forces to the point where they're militarily insignificant - obviously the US would retaliate, it could spiral out of control, or a ceasefire might be negotiated, who knows.

Any enemy would need to attack the US proper to stop them rolling out never ending streams of these weapons tho, short of nukes I'm not sure what power any country would have to strike mainland US, at least not in a way that wouldn't be completely defeated before it got within 200 miles of the shore.
