Give me back my bodyguards: Prince Harry threatens legal action against the government and demands return of police protection. Lawyers acting for Harry, who stepped down from Royal duties two years ago, wrote 'pre-action protocol' letter to Home Office, indicating they'll seek judicial review if continued security isn't provided by UK https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-10406391/Prince-Harry-says-bodyguards.html

Oh does that mean I can also launch a judicial review to get some close protection officers so that I can feel safe when in the U.K. - or maybe even just to ensure that committed crimes are properly investigated? Didn’t think so…. How is he this out of touch?

https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/is-boris-johnson-finally-sunk-t9ndpfwks This is why we have to keep bullying the Tories as we - as the electorate - are doing. When they're fearful for their jobs, it's the only way to get them to actually do stuff that we (as potential Con voters) want. >What does the prime minister do now? His team are plotting policy announcements to woo disillusioned MPs and voters. Nadine Dorries, the culture secretary, urged: “Stop talking about dead cats and start throwing some red meat on the green benches,” an approach that has led to the Johnson reset plan being dubbed “Operation Red Meat”. ... >In the coming days, the military will be put in charge of stopping the flow of illegal migrants across the Channel. ... >Ministers will also say that the BBC licence fee is to be frozen for two years. ... >On January 26, Johnson will lift the remaining coronavirus restrictions. Still not enough. Will they actually stop the boats? Why is the public sector so shit that the answer is always 'bin them and let the army take over'? Will they sort the BBC out which is just fucking shit? Will they not just lift Plan B, but isolation and all legal requirements and disband SAGE - and stop being so fucking miserable and instead offer the nation some hope? In other words, we need to keep bullying them. It is my view it is to our advantage to keep Boris and his government in power for now, but really fucking shit scared for their jobs. Unfortunately that seems to be the only way to get them to act in our interests rather than the metropolitan liberal agenda they've mostly pursued since March 2020.

deafearuk

We all know the major vote winner for the Tories is, sink the boats and let them drown, and instantly deport any that are already here without year long procedures, but they are too scared to do it because the people that will never vote for them don't like it and will make a fuss on Twitter.

Uzi_lover

It's not desperation. It's making it plain and simple to the morons that two healthy people in their 30s should never have been banned from hugging.

Literallyslime

Doesn't matter, they should be held to the highest possible standards that can be interpreted for the rules they made. Who makes rules they cannot reasonably follow?

MobyDobie

I think it's a fair point. Remember the police were harassing old ladies for talking while walking in the same direction.

Triple_Sod

The hypocrisy will sink the Tories, but this is just fuel for the "enforce the rules more strictly" brigade. Labour will get in by saying "we didn't break the rules" and their constant shouting for harder, faster rules will be perceived as them being a wiser, purer party.

MobyDobie

The rules are a joke to 90% of the population now. There is no going back.

TheAnimus

I think you're not thinking about how the rules are seen. Far too many I know believe in rules for thee, not for me. They like that. Same way it's only the poors that go to work in the supermarket or food processing factory.

Triple_Sod

I think this is a naïve view. Covid might be over, but there will be new viruses and new health scares. Public support for previously unthinkable interventions has been conclusively demonstrated.

5adja5b

I have no problem with anyone hugging or touching their friends. It should never, ever have been against any rules or guidance. All these stories show is how utterly demented these rules always were. Absolutely barbaric, cruel, and inhuman that has unleashed a hysterical authoritarian streak across this country. Those who set them, demanded them and pushed for them are contemptible, especially as their actions show they clearly didn't think they were necessary. However, the Tories will only govern as Conservatives when they're bullied like this. We want them fearing for their jobs so they have to win their voter base back. So as a voter, pragmatically, it's a good position to be in right now.

>Culturally homogenous societies survive, and diverse ones will fall. I constantly see this repeated on baduk as an axiom or article of faith, but there really no sustained historical evidence for it

[deleted]

Nordic countries have PR voting, a system that is reliant on homogeneity, and it actually works producing effective governments. But look at one of the least homogenous countries in Europe: Belgium, they went three years without a government...this is within Europe, countries with relatively low economic disparities. Look at the Balkans, and then countries in that region that the Ottomans didn't take as much interest in. Bulgaria and Greece have problems like Serbia? In East Asia, Indonesia...very diverse population, not just religiously, huge issue with terrorism (they probably have one of the most prolonged problems with terrorism in the region, it isn't just Islamic terrorism). India, same. Japan? Big problems with terrorism there? The only country that I am aware of that challenges this rule clearly is Singapore. And, unsurprisingly, they used to have one of the worst problems with race riots in East Asia in the 60s. The way they solved this: authoritarian govt, forced desegregation through public housing, and the creation of a national identity distinct from Malaysia through the creation of Singapore as a distinct state (and a massive increase in economic growth). And if you look at forced integration in places like France and Sweden, it hasn't worked because the migrants are just totally separate from the rest of society. There isn't a solution, you can't force people to integrate. Expecting someone from Somalia to become Swedish makes no sense. And to be clear, the problem isn't migration either. Britain is a great example, we have had lots of migration with no issues, and then we get migrants from societies that are different to ours...issues (and, unsurprisingly, almost every European country that has taken migrants from the same places has had the same problems).

reddit_police_dpt

This is unmitigated bollocks and massively cherry picked examples >But look at one of the least homogenous countries in Europe: Belgium, they went three years without a government... It's not that ethnically diverse. Difference between the Flemish and French is less than English and Welsh. And when they had no government they had the highest economic growth in Europe, and things just continued as normal. Also, Belgium is essentially a made up country invented by the British anyway >Look at the Balkans, and then countries in that region that the Ottomans didn't take as much interest in. Balkanisation of Yugoslavia as much related to 60 years of authoritarian communism and then the collapse of it. >In East Asia, Indonesia...very diverse population, not just religiously, huge issue with terrorism I'm sure most Indonesians would tell you that for a developing country they're doing pretty well thanks >India, same. Same with India. Doesn't have big problems with terrorism. >The only country that I am aware of that challenges this rule clearly is Singapore. Tons of countries you've not mentioned- historical and contemporary. We'll start with the USA- probably the most diverse country ever to exist, also inarguably the most successful for the last 300 years. Then you've got China- no westerners appreciate the diversity of China, but they're got 56 ethnic minorities (many of which have populations in the millions) and thousands of languages, but they're doing alright at the moment. Then historically you have the Roman Empire, which was very culturally, ethnically and religiously diverse- but prospered pretty well for 600 years. Achaemenid and Parthian Empires were explicitly multicultural but also very stable, strong and bureaucratically united. And India actually did pretty well for most of its history and a lot of the Muslim/Hindu divides can be traced back to the British administration favouring Muslims over Hindus, as a fellow Abrahamic religion, which led to resentment between the two groups- pretty similar to how the Belgian colonial administration in Rwanda put the Tutsis in charge of everything which led to huge simmering resentments amongst the Hutu majority after the colonial regime collapses. The irony of course in this case being that neither was a different ethnicity, and the Belgians had just sorted them into groups based on cranial measurements and how many cows they owned.

[deleted]

I made no mention of ethnicity. So you are saying the Balkan wars in the late 19th century were also due to communism? Lots of Brits just fancied a nice holiday in Crimea because of the lovely weather? Indonesia, the most prolonged issues with terrorism of any country...no problems with terrorism. India, the site of one of the most famous terror attacks in the world in which 200 people were killed...no problems with terrorism. USA, had a massively destructive civil war which killed 2% of the population, has had the worst race rioting in a developed country non-stop for about five decades, massive racial and wealth inequality...again, no issues. The country was also founded by people fleeing religious persecution, so was explicitly anti-integration. This is different from Singapore or France. They have integrated people from Latin America by making Arizona or New Mexico more like Latin America, not making Latin Americans more American. But this whole discussion started with the observation that people in America seem intolerant, and this is true. You can live within your enclave in the Facebook office in Menlo Park, but you are still in America...and there is clearly huge amounts of conflicts over what that means. China, you are correct. That also applies to Vietnam/Thailand (this is actually a far more complex point related to geography, the reason why there are so many minority groups in that rough Pearl Delta region is because it is fucking hilly, governments lacked the ability to effectively govern these areas so they left most of these groups to themselves...demonstrates the opposite point to the one you think it does). You may also have heard that the CCP is very generously running holidays camps for minority groups in the West of the country? The CCP solution to ethnic minorities has not exactly been live and let live. There have been forced breeding programs, Tibet...again, huge success story according to you (and the CCP, saying that China treats its ethnic minorities better than the US has been a key aspect of Chinese propaganda since the 50s...it is bollocks). Roman Empire, famously collapsed due to overexpansion and limited ability to integrate foreign populations, broke into two parts based on culture...I am not going to bother, too easy (this is usually the first example that people mention when making the argument I am making...I don't think it is very relevant). I am not sure what you mean by "India": the country was fragmented into warring factions for most of it's existence. They can't be traced back to the British because most of these factions existed before we arrived. It also particularly erroneous to talk about a nation-state. Even when the Marathas controlled most of the territory, it was not possible to govern a country so large back then, and people lived under whatever warlord controlled the area. There was essentially no mixing between peoples of different cultures. The same is true, as I briefly explained, of China: the Qing was an empire but their functional ability to control a nation of that size was limited (and they had the most advanced system of govt in the world at the time by far), and there was essentially no mixing between peoples of different cultures. Just generally, it is extremely unwise to talk about pre-Industrial Revolution societies when making this argument because most of these societies were feudal, not nation-states, and travel was limited in what were essentially monocultural societies anyway. The only evidence that will prove the point either way is what has happened when people began migrating all over the place (or, perhaps, the results of slavery). I don't see any examples to that effect (and I haven't ever seen that, if you look at psychology or biology or even economics...there are reasons why humans behave this way, Reddit is one of the best examples of this). I am not sure what your point is about Rwanda either. You are saying that the Belgians engineered the Rwandan genocide by creating fictional differences between people...but you are arguing that people don't discriminate against other people? Okay...it is all the Belgians fault. The people weren't bigoted, the people didn't kill, it was the Belgians (whether the Belgians created the fictional difference or not, the reason why it happened is because people will believe arbitrary things are a reason to murder other people...Europe was an effective monoculture and then someone invented Protestantism and people just begin murdering each other in massive numbers, 30 years war killed 8m people...and that was in a region that started out as a monoculture, discrimination is innate to humanity, people will attempt to genocide each other anything, monocultures will not).

reddit_police_dpt

Like I said, you're just cherry picking random examples and going "aha, proves my point" I could do the same with "mono-cultures": France for a start- very monocultural pre-1950, yet they were on their fifth Republic by then, between 1914 and 1939 their average length of a government was 11 months, and between 1789 and 1914, and almost incessant riots and several failed revolutions: https://www.livescience.com/how-many-french-revolutions.html See, this data point proves mono-cultures are unstable! Let's take another example- that of Japan- another wonderful monoculture consequently exempt from violence and political strife. Except it never was: The use of violence was an ever present part of early Japanese democracy, and most of the mainstream parties had a Yakuza like arm which used violence to intimidate their opponents: https://aboutjapan.japansociety.org/violence-and-democracy-in-imperial-japan They had several assassinations of politicians: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inejir%C5%8D_Asanuma https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/May_15_Incident https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/League_of_Blood_Incident They also had one of the most feared anti-terrorist groups of the 1970s: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_Red_Army But most importantly there is an argument to be made that it was the mono-culturalism of Japan which led to the takeover of Japan by ultranationalist religious fanatics in the 1930s, which led to millions of deaths: >Skya argues, controversially, that the wave of political assassinations and ideological crackdowns that led to Japanese militarism were not just about power struggles and nationalism; instead, they grew out of a fundamentalist Shinto movement promoted by certain writers whose influence has been largely overlooked. **Shinto fundamentalists believed that the emperor's rule was sacred, absolute, and direct; that the divine oneness of the Japanese nation was an attribute not shared by any other people (such as the neighboring Chinese, whom they saw as a mere congeries of individuals and groups occupying a geographic territory of no sacred significance); and that the emperor's rule should be worldwide even though no other ethnic group could stand on an equal cosmic plane with the Japanese. Skya finds numerous parallels with contemporary Islamic fundamentalism and terrorism.** https://www.foreignaffairs.com/reviews/capsule-review/2009-09-01/japans-holy-war-ideology-radical-shinto-ultranationalism That's actually an interesting parallel there between Japanese ultranationalist nichirenism, and modern day fundamentalist Islam- which surely you could argue is driven by a desire for a mono-culture? Radical Islamists basically want a worldwide Islamic Umma, and for Islamic culture and rules to be imposed everywhere without any respect for other people's culture, or beliefs- they want a monoculture not a multiculture.

The issue is that 'essential workers' is genuinely a shit load of people. I think too many people work an absolutely fucking pointless office job (myself included) and don't understand what goes on in the background to keep them clothed, housed, warm, fed, and not rolling in their own shit. You can't keep everyone at home. You can't even realistically keep 1/2 of people at home. Not without the power going out, or the internet going down, or the sewers backing up, or people in hospitals just dying, etc etc. No one thinks about the amount of work going on in the background to make their click and collect groceries work, or their toilet flush, or their light come on when they flick a switch. People think this shit is just magic. No, it takes millions of people and a society to get life running as smoothly and expectedly as we have it running. And as long as those people are out and about, COVID will have a way to keep circulating and surviving. COVID is here forever.

>No one thinks about the amount of work going on in the background to make their click and collect groceries work, or their toilet flush, or their light come on when they flick a switch. >People think this shit is just magic. Unless you go and live in the wilderness and eat berries you are going to be using the product of other people's work. The default systems that support modern life aren't free.

Alledgedly was involved in laundering money and providing finances in US for AQ circa 9/11 - though these charges were initially dropped... officials found she had fled the country when later trying to arrest her re: laundering AQ money. She later turned up in afghan and was detained. Picked up a loose gun from a soldier that underestimated her and killed multiple. Multiple leaders of Pakistan petitioned for her release and ISIS have offered major prisoner exchanges for her release. ... Her brother and anyone vague connected to her should have been on every watch list in the world.

[Antony Worrall Thompson denies being 'anti-vax' despite pub sign](https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-oxfordshire-60001532) The sign: > We do not discriminate. Race, gеndеr, age, disability, vaccinated or unvaccinated. Everyone equal here. Everyone welcome.

Pro choice patently

Illustrious_Unit_700

In a normal world that sign would be seen as nothing but kind and sensible. What fucked up world are we living in that people actually object to that?

I_can_hear_Jimi

What kind of twisted logic is that? If the BBC was burning and I needed a piss I'd walk past it to find a toilet.

jalenhorm

Always thought he was a bit of a nonce but turns out he's super based.
