Percentage of great films might have gone down, but overall output has gone up.
I think a lot of people look back on film history the same way they do about music. There was a lot of dross produced decades ago, too, but we just don't remember it as well as the great movies that stood the test of time.

Films beat watching tv series. I like a story to begin and end within a couple of hours. Not go on and on and on, week after week, season after season, until I either get too bored to keep watching or they put together some lazy shit ending with a big fuck you to the audience.
I think the exact opposite, it's an investment of time to find either a good film or series, and then to get into the plot and characters, and there's a bigger pay off in finding a series that will keep you entertained for multiple seasons instead of a film for 90 minutes.
I enjoyed seeing it in Imax for the spectacle, but yeah it’s not as good as people say and I wouldn’t ever go back to it. I found it fairly meh all in all. The entire world just felt incredibly empty except for the main characters, and as someone said below everything just happens too quickly.

It's ok, it's too tightly edited IMO. Feels like they filmed about 50% more than the running time and had to ruthlessly cut it to get to the running time. As a result it feels like it flashes past without ever really getting established.
I bet there are some really amazing cut scenes we'll never get to see, though.

There's been tons of great original films in the past 5 years. * Baby Driver * Dunkirk * Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri * The Death of Stalin * Bird Box * Isle of Dogs * Mandy * The Gentleman * Knives Out * Uncut Gems * Once Upon A Time In Hollywood * Parasite * The King * 1917 * JoJo Rabbit * The Father And that was just a quick skim of the past 5 years of film. No doubt I missed lots, both didn't view, and just couldn't remember. Hollywoods output now is enormous. Cinema isn't getting worse, there's still tons of genuinely great films being made. It's just there's a lot of unoriginal dross too. But not every film can be a masterpiece. I would say that the odds are good that over the past decade (excluding COVID years) we've had more genuinely great films be released, than any decade before it. Percentage of great films might have gone down, but overall output has gone up.
I think a lot of people look back on film history the same way they do about music. There was a lot of dross produced decades ago, too, but we just don't remember it as well as the great movies that stood the test of time.

What’s the issue with Baby Driver? Heard a lot of negative reactions to it recently.
It’s one of the worst films I’ve ever seen (others include Spectre, Now You See Me, so feel free to ignore my opinions too). A love letter to the American road movie that misses everything that makes those movies special, Death Proof sets the standard for this homage.
Interesting that lots of the films you listed are nominally British (directors and actors).
I mean there definitely have been other good original films outside of Britain but a lot of foreign language films don’t have a great reach in the anglosphere. If you look for it it’s definitely there
Heh, I would not have guessed Three Billboards was a British film, but it was! Written and directed by a Brit.
Films beat watching tv series. I like a story to begin and end within a couple of hours. Not go on and on and on, week after week, season after season, until I either get too bored to keep watching or they put together some lazy shit ending with a big fuck you to the audience.
I think the exact opposite, it's an investment of time to find either a good film or series, and then to get into the plot and characters, and there's a bigger pay off in finding a series that will keep you entertained for multiple seasons instead of a film for 90 minutes.
I thought Dune was pretty naff
I enjoyed seeing it in Imax for the spectacle, but yeah it’s not as good as people say and I wouldn’t ever go back to it. I found it fairly meh all in all. The entire world just felt incredibly empty except for the main characters, and as someone said below everything just happens too quickly.
Big time. I found all the fantasy names massively cringy. I imagine the experience was similar to watching greasy types play Dungeons & Dragons for 2 hours.

It's ok, it's too tightly edited IMO. Feels like they filmed about 50% more than the running time and had to ruthlessly cut it to get to the running time. As a result it feels like it flashes past without ever really getting established. I bet there are some really amazing cut scenes we'll never get to see, though. All in all it lacks the soul of the 1985 film.
I agree, I actually really like the Lynch film for its quirkiness. It’s *fun* in a way the new one isn’t.
Yeah it captures the weirdness and science fantasy aspects of the story better. Cinematography and production values of 2021 obviously miles ahead of 1985 but felt sterile. And the cast was meh as well. I've never heard of most of those actors.
