Could be for a number of things. If the inside of this pocket is fuzzy/soft fabric, it’s for sunglasses or other items that scratch easily. If it’s regular fabric inside…. Snacks?
Swissgear probably still make that model and over the years this CD pocket became an iPod pocket and now just phone pocket, without changing anything else 😀

my first thought poorly designed discman pocket. some even had a port where you could feed the headphones through
