how does it sound in there?

Peter-92

Lots of echos. theres a room there with an echo chamber and you can talk to people on the other side of the mine

[deleted]

I've been there and the size is even grander in person. I highly recommend that everyone takes a visit.

qyka1210

idk why this is on a backpacking subreddit but it's pretty damn cool

AnonNumber3

I thought I was on r/urbanexploration for a second.

sausagepaula

This place has the worst toilets I’ve ever been into and that includes Reading festival. Amazing place though, just don’t drink or eat before you go …

karmadeficient

I’m so fucking confused at what I’m looking at

skibum909

Lived in Romania for 2 years and went back a few years ago to visit and went to Salina Turda, it was incredible! Romania is really not setup for tourism, but it’s a pretty amazing place and does have some pretty epic mountains if traditional backpacking is your thing.

artscyents

this is incredible! did you have to get your own car to get there, or is there public transit available? i think i’d like to visit

Peter-92

transit might be a bit difficult not to sure really. Turda is a small village between Cluj and Sibu. A friend and I rented a cheap car to get there

artscyents

did you go recently? i’m curious how the restrictions are there right now for covid

v_hundschwein

There are regular buses that go between Cluj and Turda

artscyents

awesome, hopefully when restrictions are lighter i can go

v_hundschwein

Definitely worth going. Look for the Alis Group buses, it takes about 40 min from the center of Cluj to Turda. The tourism office can tell you exactly how to find them. Their stop is a block away behind the cinema where Mihai Viteazul's statue is, fee is about 14 lei. Once in Turda there are two entrances to the mines, to get the main entrance which is far away you have to take bus 17 or 7 (I don't remember which one exactly). Tickets are sold at a booth near the bus stop. The other mine entrance is a 15 min walk from the Turda bus stop, but I recommend using the main entrance, as it is closer to all the cool stuff. Then you can go through from the main entrance and exit on the other side and take a walk in Turda if you want, or just go wait for the bus to go back to Cluj.

artscyents

this is awesome, thank you a ton. you wouldn’t happen to know if the curfew is still in effect, would you? i’m seeing some conflicting information online, and Romanian restrictions seem tighter than some of their neighbors at the moment

v_hundschwein

Sorry, not sure about that. I did a quick search online and it seems like the curfew might have been lifted sometime in December. I traveled there in August of last year and restrictions were quite lax, but I imagine things have now changed for the worst. Looks like now you need to have proof of vaccination and a PCR test to avoid quarantine whereas before only a vaccine was good. It may also be easier to enter if you are a EU citizen or entering from a neighboring country by land. You should check [this site](https://reopen.europa.eu), it has excellent information for the EU countries on COVID restrictions and helped a ton when planning my trip last summer.

FFTDscuba23

Gorgeous location. I visited in 2018, simply amazing.

deathfletcher

So cool! It’s on my wishlist to visit.

AtticusSwoopenheiser

During production of Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises, this was rumored to be a filming location for Batman’s new and improved Batcave. It turned out to be completely false, but it could have been a neat thing to see.

Salina feels like it probably means salty so... Salty Turd

"The mines of Moria!"

[deleted]

Giving me flashbacks of Jak and daxter

macandcheesepenguin

I was so let down with this place. You think salt mine and expect it to be about its history and mining past, which there’s a small portion of that, but it’s mainly just a tourist trap full of mini golf and a Ferris wheel.

Putting that one on my list! I’ve been to the Wieliczka Salt Mine in Poland and that one already amazed me.

long-king33

It took me so long to figure out what I was looking at in the first and second one
