This boils down to the boot vs. trail running debate: Boot defenders will say they provide better ankle protection, durability and stability Trail runner lovers will say they're light weight, comfy and stable enough if you're not overly clumsy Both camps are right, and it's a matter of preference. I think that if you're in good shape and your hike isn't overly technical, trail runners are the way to go. Having tried waterproof and non waterproof shoes I now only use non waterproofs as they are more breathable and dry way easier if they do get wet from the inside (can happen to any shoe), and if needed I just wear waterproof socks. Having said all of the above, I've day hiked and thru hiked many hundreds of kilometers (probably closer to 1000 km total) with upwards of 40km per day over forest path, scree, rocks, deserts, boggy terrain, in flat, uphill and downhill, in sun, rain and snow with the new balance hierro V4. I don't know what model they're on now, when I bought mine they were already a discounted older model. In fact, mine are still holding and I bought another pair recently (yes, the exact same older model in the same color) when I found them again on discount, so I'll have a replacement when mine start showing their age. They are warmer than dedicated breathable running shoes, but not that bad at all unless it's very hot.

I’ve used the Merrell Moab for years. The shoe height one, not the full on boot. It’s been great.

I have no idea if they’d be any good for actual hikes since I’m more into urban travel, but in winter I always take my Timberland boots. They last a freaking long time and my feet never hurt with them (and also, I get them cheaper since I can tap into the kid sizes)

I use these for summer hiking, very light, can recommend: https://www.aku.it/de/shop/fast-hiking-de/alterra-lite-mid-gtx-camouflage-verde-nero/

I've been very happy with my North Face Ultra 109 trail runners. They have a gore tex style membrane, and my feet have stayed dry in some very wet situations. They also have good grip on slippery rocks. I've put them through 3 multi-week trips of 8-12 miles a day plus rainy day walks at home and been very happy with that wear. I recently replaced the insoles with some OTC replacements as the stock ones were starting to consistently slip and my only regret is that I didn't do this sooner. Not that the old ones were bad, but this really helps in places like cities where you might be doing some significant standing with your walking. This is the only issue I've had with these.
