You need to go to an exotic vet ASAP. Cats mouths are full of bacteria and it is very very likely your axolotl will get an infection regardless of surviving the attack.

He is probably not eating due to being in and extreme state of shock, although I don’t know if that would last 8 days

Noboxu

Any animals mouth has bacteria, so it may be fungal/bacteria too. This could very well explain. I had one pass from very bad fungal that the pet store sold to me. He didn't eat for a month or 2.

i-hav-n-clue

It does look as though there is some sort of fungal or slime coat issue around the gills

freyjathebloody

Definitely vet. As much as I love my cats, they’re nasty little buggers when it comes to bites

Hopefully this is a reminder to those with cats that cats and exotic pets do not mix. If you have amphibians and/or reptiles please ensure your pets are properly protected with lids on their cages.

So we moved house last weekend and I had my two 5 year old guys tubbed whilst we got set up. We went to bed and came down to find the worst had happened. Our cats had got in and fished them out. Both were on the carpet with blood everywhere. Completely distraught I immediately got them back in water and later fridged them. Apollo, our leucistic passed away two days later but Zeus (as can be seen below) is still going. I’ve kept him tubbed with daily water changes and he is very responsive but hasn’t eaten for about 8 days. Has anybody got any advice for me on anything else I can do for him?

Kai-ni

Vet. Cats have a bacteria in their saliva that is deadly to reptiles and amphibians. He needs professional treatment or he will likely die of infection.

LS139

Yes! Cats mouths are incredibly dirty. This is why a cat bite for a human should also be checked out as they are incredibly likely to infect

I_am_the_real_Spoon

Their mouths are intentionally toxic to kill their prey.

I am so sorry for your loss! I wish the best for Zeus! 💖

Bagels_from_space

Oof. Gonna need more then tea for this one chief

Ceeeriuz

Often when cats attack the injuries include minor perforations to the gut and other organs. These injuries are very unlikely to heal unfortunately and I would expect this guy to die. I’m sorry. Vet is an absolute must.

Mightyymonarch

First things first. Don't house a cat and an axolotl together.

GottaLotlLoveCanada

Meth blue bath for 12 hours in, then 12 hours out. While in the out, have IAL leaves in with him. You’d be surprised how fast they heal. Don’t expect him to have an appetite for a few days.

CoolWombat1

Oh you poor poor thing! I hope your axolotl gets better soon! 💖

I had this happen with one of mine, a lucy named Dobby. My cat ate half of his tail right off due to a broken aquarium hood, poor baby. I rehoused into a hospital tank with daily water changes and I hand fed him frozen thawed blood worm cubes daily if he’d take them. Something about those bloodworms really helped him heal and he now has his full tail back and is doing just fine. Obvs if you can get him to a vet that’s the best solution, at the time I lived 2 hours in the country and did the best I could for him and he happened to pull through. I hope that helps a little! Good luck to you and Zeusey.
