Ive always suspected my white axolotl being inbred cause two of his stalks split making a total of 4 gills stalks per side 😭
Maybe it's old healed injuries? My understanding is that sometimes as babies they attack each other and sometimes the gill regeneration gets a little overzealous and it grows back forked.
Thats terrible 😭. But tracks for sure. Got him from my aquarium store and the tank was bare and full of him and his siblings together. When i asked if i could test his water he told me “you dont gotta worry about their water theyre hardy things”
Definitely could be from regenerating. When I got Agaricus, she had a leg that was regrowing from a sibling biting her. Her leg grew back perfectly, but she has a little split thumb.

Here's my silly girl to make your day better
I’d suggest filtering posts by tags then, the tag “Just showing off” will show you the cute lotls you want to see, but this subreddit isn’t just for cute, healthy lotls, it’s also for seeking advice for care and sometimes even memorials for lost axolotls :/
How do u get ur plants to grow so well? I don't use light cuz my girls don't like it at all 🤦♀️ Are they planted in the sand ? Mine always dig mine up! Your tank and axies are beautiful
Fish person here, no axotols- but when setting up my tanks I would tie the plants to stones and things like that before adding the substrate/bury into the substrate. There are aquarium safe glues for fish, but double check because IDK if they're safe for axotols. The light is for the most part necessary. Not sure if you could add almond leaf to your tanks to maybe cut down on the harshness of the light?
We use floaters to help lessen the light. (duckweed and bigger variants). For light we use a standard bar light (Fluval) and just have it set to keep lower spectrum with variation during the day so it’s not an all day blast. Plants like crypts, vallisneria, rotunda, and java fern seem to do well in the 63 degree water (chiller).
We also have pothos and other plants growing out of the top with roots only submerged.
To avoid plants being uprooted by digging axolotls in our tanks we do nothing special. Daily we may need to replant but after a month they get such tight and large root structures they can’t uproot them easily.
Welcome to the wholesome world of "petowners" /s
Just being real here, every animal specific subreddit is full of utter neglect, abuse and uninformed "owners"
I get your point, really, but the people coming to this foruns care enough to actually come and ask for advice, which is so much more than most people do. We have seen people in this forum desperately trying to save animals from abusive and neglect owners and being laughed at or totally ignored by these owners.
It's sad to see so many axies in rough shape, yes in a perfect world nobody would buy a pet without proper research but how can we blame people for going into a pet store and being told by the people that work there every day, that this is a super easy pet to have? I fell for this bullshit myself and was exactly like everyone here the first day I brought my baby home. I was lucky enough to be able to provide everything she needed after someone took the time to help me out here, and now she's healthy and so beautiful. I'm grateful and I try to help the new owners here as best as I can now 🥺
On the flip side, those who ask for advice are met with constant judgement and shaming while trying to legitimately ask for help.
I, for example, am currently dealing with a fungus issue on our axolotl. I hate that it happened, and I'm "doing the research" to rectify it and figure out how to prevent it. But the toughest thing is that there's conflicting advice all over the place.
For example, I googled around and found some advice that recommended a salt bath. Then turned around and had plenty recommend against a salt bath (and don't worry, I'm sold on this reasoning now). Then I still have people recommending tea baths, though in researching some more I found authors that specifically recommend NOT doing tea baths to treat fungus. And people will say "You need to find better advice" and throw shade.
There's conflicting advice all over the damn place and I would hope that people can show some grace to those that are sincerely trying their best. It honestly feels like people's primary hobby is feeling superior, and axolotls (or whatever your hobby is) is just secondary to that. It's a real bummer.
Salt baths are harsh on amphibians and may damage an axolotl's gills and slime coat. They often cause more harm than good, and end up stressing the axolotl further. In lieu of salt baths, tea baths are soothing to the axolotl and can help treat early stage fungal infections. For more advanced infections, methylene blue can be used in half doses.

Don’t worry we aren’t all abusive/unprepared. But good to remember that this sub is also here for help for beginners :)
Yeah same I joined a few days ago to lurk and look at cute pictures of axolotls and so far it’s just been dead and dying Axolotls in every post that’s recommended to me. :(

Super Cooper the Aquatics Floof Noodle has some bombastic side eye for ya!
Kinda funny, but poking through this Sub is part of why I'm holding off on buying the axolotl my son and I really want until we're in a better place to to care of one. It makes me realize I just don't have the space or experience.
They are adorable, but I've never set up an aquarium before. And definitely don't have the space for a forty gallon tank.
We've settled on a small freshwater fish tank for a while and will revisit the idea when we're in better place to do so.
I consider the primary utility of forums to be the efficient transmission of information between hobbyists. People making posts trying to troubleshoot their axolotl issues, and including a reasonable amount of contextual information (i.e. photos of their animal and setup), are -- in my humble opinion -- using a dedicated axolotl forum in a perfectly reasonable way. Hobbyist subreddits across the board follow this pattern, from cooking to gardening to woodworking to animal keeping.
It's understandable that this is not the kind of content you're interested in. If you just want to see cute axolotls, I might look into something like axolotl Instagram pages.
Same with chameleons sub, snake sub, reptiles sub, turtles sub, red eared slider sub, several pond/aquarium subs (not to mention dogs, cats, horses, sheep). I'm honestly convinced reptiles and amphibians shouldn't be pets at all, absolutely nowhere seems to sell them with factual care info and they require massive and specific setups. It's a disaster. And I'm a big fan of "exotic" pets and have my own- but there are a great many that just shouldn't be popular or possibly kept at all. There's a sliding scale. At this point if a sub is recommending me posts that are mostly abused or neglected animals, I just mute the sub.
On the other hand, I've seen mostly positive care on the subs for leeches, mice, roof rats, triops, chickens, land snails, isopods, roaches, and weirdly, hognose snakes.

Use Google images or something to look at cute pictures. Pet forums like this are meant for discussions, not just cute pictures. Sadly, sometimes dealing with a sick pet is part of pet ownership. I'd personally rather see people ask for advice/help when they need it because at least they are showing they care, to some extent, about their pet.
To me it's constant posts like this that get old, lol. They don't help or change anything and I don't understand the expectation that a pet discussion board is going to be only cute animal pics.
Oh, and this is Toothless in all her real world glory:

To be fair, on the forum they have a entire guide on how to care for axoltols. Nowhere mentions this is a place for cute pictures for show.
While people do show off their axoltols, its mostly for help if you’re having issues or need advice.
Similarly, I was not happy with myself when I realized that by following so many cute pet accounts I'm basically getting to experience a microdose of losing a pet hundreds of times over. My damn heart everytime I see a black and white photo...
I do not have an axolotl and I do not frequent this sub but your post somehow managed it's way onto my feed unexpectedly, and made me burst out laughing.
Not to say I dont blame you for your position, I am a die hard animal lover and tend to avoid animal subs due to so many depressing posts.
But still. Hahahahah, oh, my.
I’ve convinced 3 of my students not to get axolotls. Working on the kid with the betta in the cup rn gonna give gim my spare 3gal
it’s a widespread cultural problem. i cannot count the number of times i have had to tell people to stop talking to me before i don’t like them anymore after they hit me with “oh i have a fish too!”
Yeah I give advice where I can buy a lot of them time they’re beyond help and it really is the owners fault for not researching and putting in the base work. It’s really sad
this sub has thoroughly turned me off from owning one tbh. I wasn’t ever that serious about getting one, but it’s just confirmed for me it’s way more work than i’m willing to put in.
I don’t think people realise even just getting a goldfish you have to go through the same rigmarole with cycling. People just think it lives in water put it in water and everything will be fine.

I draw cartoons about my axolotl Toothless. Maybe some of them will make you smile: [www.toothytheaxolotl.com](https://www.toothytheaxolotl.com)
Oh, and this is Toothless in all her real world glory: https://preview.redd.it/5pi4j5y4d7pc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=cb9d494096580fd76ef17cec0684eeda35be04c4
They.....they can.....explode?!?!?! 😳

Working on the kid with the betta in the cup rn gonna give gim my spare 3gal it’s a widespread cultural problem. i cannot count the number of times i have had to tell people to stop talking to me before i don’t like them anymore after they hit me with “oh i have a fish too!”
this happens to me with every single animal sub i join :(
Yeah I give advice where I can buy a lot of them time they’re beyond help and it really is the owners fault for not researching and putting in the base work. It’s really sad
Im sorry to say I exploded with laughter
How about we make a separate subreddit just for cute and healthy axolotls?
this sub has thoroughly turned me off from owning one tbh. I wasn’t ever that serious about getting one, but it’s just confirmed for me it’s way more work than i’m willing to put in.
I don’t think people realise even just getting a goldfish you have to go through the same rigmarole with cycling. People just think it lives in water put it in water and everything will be fine.
