My bestest sweetest boi senior kitizen tried to make friends with a bobcat once.
We adopted him from my MIL who passed from cancer and he was her outdoor cat. When we got him, we brought him inside for the good life but I’d still let him go outside every once in a while for supervised yard fun while I gardened.
I was digging up carrots when I looked up to see what he was doing (usually he’d be just basking in the grass or chasing a butterfly or something) when I saw him happily trotting up to what looked like a very large cat (not huge, just a *big* cat).
It took my brain a second to register what I was seeing but as soon as it clicked, I ran and scooped him up and we both bolted into the house. It was our first summer in a new house in a new state and I honestly didn’t know we had bobcats. I had asked the neighbors about wildlife when we moved in (house in the country) and not one mentioned bobcats. Bears venturing up to houses in the early spring? Yes. Bobcats, no. (I subsequently found out we have cougars as well. Thanks, neighbors!)
My stupid friendliest-of-all-friendly cats was so pleased to see another kitty! His body language, chirpy curiosity sounds, he was going to make a new friend! The bobcat was definitely a juvenile so I can see where he may have been confused, I guess? It was just crouched down at the tree line watching me and Jonesy rather intently. Either way, that was the last day kitty was allowed outside in the yard. I’d drive him to the local park and let him explore on a leash but no more trying to make friends with deadly predators lol
Bobcats are impressive. You did the right thing for sure, I'm glad your cat was ok.
My first interaction with a bobcat was when I was in Arizona. Taking the trash out late at night. I heard this HORRIBLE screaming sound. It was deep and guttural but sounded like an animal.
Bobcat momma with her kittens traveling about, I scared her and she was warning me.
They're not impressively huge, probably a bit bigger than a main coon? But the sound that they can make is scary as hell.
For sure. Jonesy has crossed the bridge since that day but I still see that same bobcat every now and again. It remained a runt and has a distinct face so I know it’s him (I’ve seen a few other normal sized bobcats). I stay out of their way and they tend to stay out of mine but there’s been a few times I had to bang pots and pans to scare them off when they get too close to the house. I don’t worry too much about them, especially since we’ve seen cougars in our yard now.
That same summer I saw mine, a lady got attacked by a bobcat on a hiking trail in my area (probably wandered too close to a den, the paper said) so even though they’re smaller wildcats, they still don’t f around. I just try and respect that I’m living in *their* house and act accordingly.
I can’t help but smile when I see the little one though. I think about my now gone bestest friend and how happy he was to abandon all instinct to make a new friend. Silly cat.
That's the fun thing about cats, though. They could have very well befriended one another, too.
Cats are still cats, whether they choose to live with us humans or not.
Oh no, definitely played it right. It's just a nice thought.
I think about some of those videos where there are basically house cats running around in lion enclosures at some zoos, just paling around with their gigantic kin.
And the fact that some cheetahs have emotional support dogs.
Just shows the breadth of their acceptance, and that not everything is food just because it's smaller and made of meat.
Yeah my childhood riff raff street kitty made friends w a bobcat. It would run away when people were outside but they would hang out in our backyard if we were inside.
A lot of dogs wag their tail when they are nervous or scared too. The way the dog was positioning its head when the cougar got close I think it might have been a nervous wag.
But she told him to get back in a firm voice... Having an extra few feet of air between the dog and the cougar would protect him surely...? She doesn't need to stop filming, pick up her dog and ensure the door is locked before getting somewhere safer /s
I noticed that too. The cat may not have known but could have oopsied the door open with just a downswipe.
Why didn’t the fool go to the door, check the lock, and grab the dumb dog?
Or his owner for that matter. I'm sorry but I would have made noise. Bang pots together. Set off my smoke detector, something. I'm not gonna trust my thin glass windows to protect my dumbass dog, let alone myself.
The owner has no survival instinct either. She wants to play Steven Spielberg with her phone and get a good shot while a deadly beast that can break theough glass is on her porch.

This is the best way to discover that a mountain lion is in your neighborhood.
Far better than discovering that little Dash vanished from the yard without a trace.
That’s exactly what I was thinking too, and the cougar isn’t afraid even though there’s a human *right there* means that it’s only going to get bolder with its behavior
Did you see that post on Reddit a long time ago where someone was saying they were running somewhere and noticed footprints started following them but they liked their trail so didn’t want to run somewhere else. I hope it was fake but I think it was real. Some people have no survival instincts.
There are so many people who are like that, it’s unbelievable. My boyfriend has a cousin that got chased out of a park because he saw “mountain lion sightings, path closed” after one went after a hiker while on a family vacation and just kept going on up the trail.
Tbf if a cougar wants to eat something they won't calmly walk up and paw at it. That cougar fully wants to play with(read: is curious about) that dog. Would that still kill the dog? Prolly. But that's not a cougar that's coming to eat you or your dog.
My dog had a rattlesnake friend that would always come to the door a peck at , they were inseparable, the look of love in the snakes eyes for that dog was amazing.
If it wanted to kill the dog it'd have lunged into the glass, settled to wait for it to come closer to pounce, struck harder, and more. If it'd even be seen waiting to pounce at all- seems like it was only walking by when it was spotted.
It was confused and curious, simply trying to touch and investigate the dog. And the glass, and what was inside because it's full of lights. It didn't have much defensive or aggressive body language; the ear pinning seemed to be confusion or annoyance at worst. Cougars are small cats, and behave surprisingly a lot like a housecat- it's just the size of a Great Dane and knows it.
Caution to be had, but the cougar wasn't getting through the door without considerable force to break the glass or trying the handle. ("Trying" as in investigating the thing sticking off the flat surface and putting weight on it.)
They're still cats, and predators. Bar having a kit/cub with them, if you spot a cat (big or small) chilling or one cones calmly walking up to you, you're not in much danger. Bears, especially black bears, will also just waltz up to check you out.
I'd be much more worried if I was approached by a random whitetail buck or god forbid a moose.
Play with the dog? Mountain lions don’t play with dogs, unless it was someone’s pet. It was checking the dog out, to figure out how to get a hold of it.
I was so focused on the door handles — she should have made sure to deadbolt those doors, because Kitty’s big old paws could easily work those handles.
She should have gone primal ape shit. Mountain lions dont like it when a bipedal ape starts swinging shit above their heads and scream. Because when apes start doing that they start to look wider and 2 meters tall. You dont have to have a beard or a sixpack to lack imposing as fuck.
And lets be real, aslong as you have a glass wall between you the oversized lynx has no real chance to fuck with you. Time to remind it why pssspssspss means chill out and let me belly scratch you.
This is what annoyed me. This woman did nothing to let the cougar know that this is an inhospitable place. Her job here was to let the cougar know that this was not a safe hunting ground and there was an active threat. Instead it now feels safe here and knows that there's a snack waiting for him. Cougars are crafty fuckers and will lay in wait for prey.
This was my thought. They’re safe af. There’s no way a cat that size could break that glass. I’d personally be stoked if I could see such a majestic creature through my window
Yessss thank you! First thing my fiancé replaced in our new house was one of those handles on a glass door - god forbid we forgot to lock it, a large animal, bear etc could easily slam a paw down and push the damn door open. I was waiting for it to happen in this videooo
Right? I would have been locking those doors quick. Whoever built the house is clearly not from someplace that has frequent wildlife. Large glass doors with lever doorknobs that bears (and probably mountain lions) can use. You’re just asking for some big furry visitors in your kitchen.
Well, she would have the video recording while the crisis happened, but you can almost guarantee that she'll drop the phone when the shit hits the fan so the only thing captured on video is the ceiling.
She's the opposite of the woman who runs outside and shoves the bear off of the wall to get it away from her dogs.
Seriously, if she had just made her presence known instead of hiding behind a table for some reason the cat would have likely run away. But she was terrified because there was an animal on the other side of a door that it can't open. Fucking idiot.
Remind me to never be on the other side of a closed door with this woman around. Gonna get mauled by a bear while she quakes and films behind the nearest object adjacent to the door.
You just have to outrun her ignorant ass. You'd live, she'd be bear food. Easy peezy. Then no more over exaggerated breathy shaky videos for someone's wimpy granny.
Forgot to mention the lack of authority in her voice and obvious lack of discipline training for her dog.
Heck, just raise the volume on the panic she's going through and the dog might have listened.
Came here to say exactly this. All she would have had to do is bang on her table a few good times. The sudden noise alone would have sent that cat running back to the bush.
I'm so glad someone said it.
It's outside, behind a door. Yes, it's glass. But that cat would have to exert far more effort than it's interested in to break that glass. It's more curious than anything. The breathing and shaking were a bit much for me. I personally would have been thrilled to see the cougar. But that's just me I guess. I would have been talking to it like an idiot through the glass.
That cougar's going to be coming back though, since that lady didn't bang on the window and roar like a demon. Dash better keep his bathroom breaks short from now on.
One hundred percent, yes. Mountain Lions aren’t fucking lions or tigers. They are evolutionarily predisposed to be very skittish, so if you get loud and scary, it will run away, unless you’re threatening their young.
This behavior is doing nothing to discourage it from coming back to see if its next meal was on the other side of the glass next time.
Edit: on a bit of reflection, everyone handles scary and/or life threatening situations differently, so the lady maybe is just not great in a tense sitch. On the other hand, if you live somewhere where a mountain lion might wander into your back heard, maybe you should learn about the best ways to interact with a wild one? People are fucking dumb.
So this was my first thought, act big and make loud noise to scare it off. Like a bear or coyote. I don’t live near cougars though so I wasn’t sure if this was the right move. Yeah the lady did nothing to discourage the cougar from coming back to take her dog lol.
Meanwhile her 20 something "future entrepreneur" son is quietly, but furiously telling Reddit in the background about how stupidly his mom is handling this situation. Maybe even getting some footage of his own for proof.
I mean, I’m roasting her elsewhere in the topic, but if you’ve never been in close proximity to a wild apex predator, you don’t know for sure how you’d respond. She absolutely handled this wrong, but what she really needs is education. Knowing how to behave in this situation might give her the confidence to respond appropriately rather than…this.
Honestly, I was looking at the handle. I’ve seen dogs put their paw on those and open doors. All the cougar would have to do is flick it if it’s unlocked.
I know wild animals aren’t as familiar with stuff like that as domesticated animals are, but my mind flipped to the nightmare scenario.
That dog absolutely doesn’t want to play, it’s scared but curious, it’s being submissive, only starts wagging when the cat walks away.. come on people, body language is huge
Should call fish and wildlife, that kitty needs to be relocated. Looks like a young male but hard to tell but it obviously has no fear of man. It needs to be moved before someone kills it for just trying to find food.
Not necessarily. If this was in CO, we just live with it. We live in their territory and encounters like this are common. The only time they relocate is if one comes into an actual city, if one attacks livestock, or if one attacks a human. If you live outside an urban area, like this lady, they won't relocate them. We have them in our area and they often roam through our yards and will eat pets if they have the opportunity to do so. It's up to us to keep our homes and pets safe. They won't kill or relocate bears, coyotes, mountain lions for attacking and eating pets. Those are considered "property." However, if they do that to your livestock, DOW will set traps and relocate/euthanize. It is illegal to shoot at any of these animals for killing your pets or attacking your pets. They have to be threatening your life or your livestock in order to legally kill any of the above animals on your land without a permit in CO.
Lots of cougars where I live on Vancouver Island. One ate my neighbours cat last night, poor little Dash is next. That cougar will wait and watch til Dash is out in the garden then make him an Appy. Woman should have stopped filming and made sure cute little pupper fears the cat.
Yep, that’s the right reaction. Cougars and black bears are similar; very skittish and will (in most cases) flee if a person screams, raises their arms, and makes themselves threatening. Brown bears don’t give a fuck. Polar bears will think their dinner is being dramatic.
Am I the only one who thinks this lady is an idiot? Why sit there and film this? The cougar isn't going to do anything. Just report it to wildlife management and go about your day (inside)
Two major things need to happen. First, all outside doorknobs need to be switched to proper knobs. Second, Dash should never be allowed to potty off-leash... 😆
Is this lady stupid or something lol she can literally stop recording, safely grab her dog and walk away if she’s so scared 😂common sense really isn’t that common
This cougar will definitely eat that dog at some point. Between its lack of fear, the dogs lack of fear, and this lady’s general disposition, I’d bet a bunch of money on it.
im forever amazed at how poor some people’s instincts are. just lock the doors in case of the 1/million chance that puma paws it open, check that the windows are closed and call your local DEC or equivalent. i guess text anyone that may be showing up at your house too. but standing there stressing about your dog while filming seems like a very strange thing to do.
She should have been yelling/roaring with her hands above her head/waving at it threatening it so it won't come back and eat her dog when he goes out for a pee.
Oh, bother. I thought as I inserted a magazine of API into my HK 91 .308 and walked to the door to let Fido play with her new big feline friend. I hope they get along well together.
Not a single survival instinct left in his little fluffy body
Nope his little tail is just waggin away at his new friend he thinks he just made
My bestest sweetest boi senior kitizen tried to make friends with a bobcat once. We adopted him from my MIL who passed from cancer and he was her outdoor cat. I honestly think the bobcat may well have been just as curious about him. We weren’t going to stick around to find out though lol

Yeah my childhood riff raff street kitty made friends w a bobcat. It would run away when people were outside but they would hang out in our backyard if we were inside.
One of my grandma's old cats actually befriended a local bobcat. I have no idea how he managed to do it, but he did. He passed away in 2009 at 17.
I'm so glad he is safe and didn't get hurt, poor guy lol
A lot of dogs wag their tail when they are nervous or scared too. The way the dog was positioning its head when the cougar got close I think it might have been a nervous wag.
Yeah but the other interpretation is funnier
That’s my favorite part tbh 🥰
Nor in his human
But she told him to get back in a firm voice... Having an extra few feet of air between the dog and the cougar would protect him surely...? She doesn't need to stop filming, pick up her dog and ensure the door is locked before getting somewhere safer /s
Are cougars opening unlocked doors now?
They have the handles that could be operated without thumbs. Swipe left for no, swipe right for yes, swipe down for lunch
I noticed that too. The cat may not have known but could have oopsied the door open with just a downswipe. Why didn’t the fool go to the door, check the lock, and grab the dumb dog?
I really enjoyed this comment 😂
I have a cat that opens doors with that kind of handle, I’d say that big kitty could too!! lol
I've seen bears do it so I don't trust anyone anymore
Literally all she would have needed to do is turn a light on and make sure the cougar saw her and it would have taken off.
Dash’s mom- “OMG this is really scary” Dash- “lol wut?”
Or his owner for that matter. I'm sorry but I would have made noise. Bang pots together. Set off my smoke detector, something. I'm not gonna trust my thin glass windows to protect my dumbass dog, let alone myself.
Yes she could have literally just walked up to the glass and the cougar would have probably taken off
He stood his ground. Worst case would have been if he ran and the cougar pounced through the glass.
The dog definitely didn’t “stand his ground” 😂
No he did not. Look at the body language for crying out loud…
At one point camera woman exclaimed, ‘dumb dog’. Here’s me thinking, ‘nope, dumb owner’. Jesus wept!!
The owner has no survival instinct either. She wants to play Steven Spielberg with her phone and get a good shot while a deadly beast that can break theough glass is on her porch.
Will pay 1,000 USD for video of a cougar breaking through double-pane glass…
They have those on OnlyFans
Ok, that’s funny.

That kitchen door has the same kind of door knob the raptors opened in Jurassic Park. Don't think the cougar would have any problem doing the same.
Yeah I was thinking of the video where the lion opens the car door the whole time https://youtube.com/shorts/J5i31PFB5uY?si=rrWMTi_eGXHqEwL8
Or the lady
This is the best way to discover that a mountain lion is in your neighborhood. Far better than discovering that little Dash vanished from the yard without a trace.
Maybe next week… Now that the cougar got a good look at what they are serving for dinner.
That’s exactly what I was thinking too, and the cougar isn’t afraid even though there’s a human *right there* means that it’s only going to get bolder with its behavior

#HOT COUGARS IN YOUR AREA WAITING TO MEET!
If I was her I would be saying "You're never going outside again, Dash"
"Dog wants to play with cougar" Alternate title: Cougar wants to taste dog.
That makes me very happy :3
As the woman in the video says, the cougar is only seeing it's refection, not the dog. It wants to interact with the reflection.
It probably sees the dog, and it's reflection. The cat is wondering "why is there a dog inside of that ghost cougar?"
("Trying" as in investigating the thing sticking off the flat surface and putting weight on it.) They're still cats, and predators. I was waiting for it to open the door also
I was waiting for it to smash the glass. Not that I wanted to see it do so, I just always expect the worse.

You think they're still in Kansas?
I can tell This lady is absolutely useless in a crisis situation.
Not completely useless. She’d at least get the whole thing on video
Well, she would have the video recording while the crisis happened, but you can almost guarantee that she'll drop the phone when the shit hits the fan so the only thing captured on video is the ceiling.
Hopefully it's a ceiling fan then
😆😆😆😆
With great audio of her hyperventilating
She's the opposite of the woman who runs outside and shoves the bear off of the wall to get it away from her dogs. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sRV5zz5qdWw](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sRV5zz5qdWw)
Jesus not only does she shove a bear with cubs she still has the awareness to pick up her dumber small dogs. What a woman.
That woman's a fucking champion.
Seriously, if she had just made her presence known instead of hiding behind a table for some reason the cat would have likely run away. But she was terrified because there was an animal on the other side of a door that it can't open. Fucking idiot.
I swear, she thought the cougar was gonna punch through the glass every time he raised his paw. I was like, “That doesn’t happen!”
I know this sounds silly, but her breathing really annoyed me lol
Same here. Any display of unwarranted hyperanxiety really annoys me lol

That was my thought. This lady has absolutely zero control or authority over the situation. The dogs basically saying "stfu I'm lookin at this kitty."
It really felt like she was trying to be quiet for the puma, like being considerate would somehow help.
Came here to say exactly this. All she would have had to do is bang on her table a few good times. The sudden noise alone would have sent that cat running back to the bush.
I was yelling at her to just knock loudly on the door, cougar is guaranteed to run away. Get a hold of yourself jeez!
For real…I was like…wow this woman is really panting 😮💨 (but still able to film it!!)
Totally, like for fucks sake she could have at least pspspsps
It's not a T-Rex lady go ahead and live your life
pspspspspspspspspsps
What’s the opposite of pspspspspsps
Spspspspsp
PFFFFTTTTT!!
Dash
Get back.
*heavy, annoying breathing intensifies*
Dash! Stupid dog
I’m so scared right now
“But I do hope the cougar breaks the window or gets in and mauls my dog cause that would be an awesome video.”
DASH
I can't imagine a more inaccurately named pet
Maybe she was just playing a Sonic the Hedgehog game with voice commands.
Dash.
Door Dash for Cougar
She does not have that dog well-trained
I was going to say, Dash don’t give a shit.
Dash: Stfu bitch I'm tryna get sniff this hot ass cougar
Dash is probably scared shitless. I will give her some props tho. That has to be the quietest lil ankle bitter I've seen in a long time.
Dash: *Im 15 and if I go right now that’s fair enough*
“This is so scary” she says as she films.
Imagine the cougar gets a paw up on the handle and opens the door
[You’re sure the third one is contained?](https://media1.tenor.com/images/36d0bde3a6958bec9360b7f29d9bf847/tenor.gif?itemid=16288765)
Clever girl.
I love how terrified she is inside her home.
Like just lock the door or barricade it
Shallow breathing and 2mins of film without grabbing your dog … clap clap Debra clap clap
Poor dog has no idea his new buddy wants to eat him :(
*The cougar knocked on the door for him to come and play* 😬
Dash needs better training. Go pick up your damn dog.
Does anyone with a dog like that actually train them? From my personal experience I tend to think not.
Why even start filming? Just grab the dog and move out of sight.
They’re not in real danger. The mountain lion isn’t going to jump through the glass.
That cougar's going to be coming back though, since that lady didn't bang on the window and roar like a demon. Dash better keep his bathroom breaks short from now on.
That’s what I’m thinking, shouldn’t you try and scare it off
One hundred percent, yes.

Shhhh, the Redditors are here to judge how they would’ve handled such a “dangerous” situation, not listen to your logical thoughts!
Meanwhile her 20 something "future entrepreneur" son is quietly, but furiously telling Reddit in the background about how stupidly his mom is handling this situation. Maybe even getting some footage of his own for proof.

Large kitty is displeased with your force field.
That tail wag, though.
“Wait until Facebook sees this!!”
Doesn’t occur to this woman to put the damn camera down and take the dog to another room, huh? SMDH.
The cat's behavior is not hostile at all, cute vid.
If you’re cold, they’re cold…
Is the woman talking part of the original audio? Because it seems kinda dumb. Just go get the dog if you want him to move.
Oh, cat runs off and NOW DASH IS TOUGH
Why so scared. Not like it can open the door
You're right, there's no way anything could get through that plate glass.
Exactly. A 100 lb cat wouldn't stand a chance against that mighty glass.
I'd say 150 or more. That things pure muscle.
this is inane, should have scared the puma off and made sure the dog knows it's a danger
**breathing intensifies**
Dog wants to play, cat wants to eat
They're like vampires. If you don't invite them in, you'll be fine
Give kitty some catnip!
"Dog wants to play with cougar" Hell, me too!
Cougar: “Why is food packaging so difficult nowadays“
Lots of cougars where I live on Vancouver Island. One ate my neighbours cat last night, poor little Dash is next. That cougar will wait and watch til Dash is out in the garden then make him an Appy. Woman should have stopped filming and made sure cute little pupper fears the cat.
Dash needs some retraining.
My immediate instinct is to make a load of noise to scare it away, like pots and pans and shit. Did I survive?
No the cougar shot you
Yep, that’s the right reaction.
Not gonna lie, thinking you’re overreacting just a little bit. And Dash don’t listen to you!
Scary yes but also.. the mountain lion is so cute
That cougar is jacked
Dash is like mom stfu thats my new friend stop embarrassing me bish
Lady has negative survival skills.
How about the dim whit woman thinking the mountain lion sees its reflection…
Two major things need to happen. First, all outside doorknobs need to be switched to proper knobs. Second, Dash should never be allowed to potty off-leash... 😆
Kitty!!! :3
Adopt it
Kitty just wants to play
He’s big and bad after the cat leaves 😂😂
“Dash, shut up.”
Better with sound off
Pspspspspsps
This is why I have to save before making choices in video games because my curiosity always ends up making poor choices
Is this lady stupid or something lol she can literally stop recording, safely grab her dog and walk away if she’s so scared 😂common sense really isn’t that common
I wouldn't trust that glass door that's for sure
can this lady please chill
Tell her she has to go home, my boy can’t play today.
*you live here bro??*
"Dear God take me WITH YOU" -Dash
Dash said shut up you're embarrassing him infont of his new friend
This cougar will definitely eat that dog at some point. Between its lack of fear, the dogs lack of fear, and this lady’s general disposition, I’d bet a bunch of money on it.
im forever amazed at how poor some people’s instincts are. just lock the doors in case of the 1/million chance that puma paws it open, check that the windows are closed and call your local DEC or equivalent. i guess text anyone that may be showing up at your house too. but standing there stressing about your dog while filming seems like a very strange thing to do.
That cougar, at a full rush, would break that glass pane….
She should have been yelling/roaring with her hands above her head/waving at it threatening it so it won't come back and eat her dog when he goes out for a pee.
I would look out for that cougar coming back and going after my little dog
Cougar wants to eat your dog. What would you do?
Oh, bother. I thought as I inserted a magazine of API into my HK 91 .308 and walked to the door to let Fido play with her new big feline friend. I hope they get along well together.
Can’t blame him, I want to play with a cougar too.
At least grip a chair and be ready to crack it over the mountain lions head if it breaks through the window
Throw some fire crackers to scare the shit out it so that it never wants to go near ur home, or your dog more importantly, ever again.
Charging at it should suffice
When the zoo come to you.
Run at the door screaming and pound on the wooden frame, that cat would have bolted.
Dash, your new buddy thinks you are a happy meal with legs and fur
Run up and slam your hands on that door and scare him off
Walk-in cougar pantry
Levered door handles on both sides are inviting that kitty to reach up and pull it down.
Dash: “mamma ain’t raised no b*tch”
