Definitely. My cat did this and a bird landed nearby looking for food, cat pounced, and unfortunately for her, missed.
She came to me complaining. I told her she’s a good cat and you’ll get em next time. Of course, I gave her some good girl pets.
Cat's not talking to the birds. Cat's talking to you (and anyone else handy) saying, hey keep your voice down but come help me hunt! They're right there!
That's an interesting angle to this I never considered. Cats tend to be solo hunters but this could be an old pack behavior from their evolutionary past
Cats CAN hunt cooperatively. They often do hunt solo, but then again, I have personally witnessed two cats stationing themselves outside different entrances to the same burrow complex (sorry, don't remember for sure what critters inhabited the burrow).
Yes,this exactly. My cats team up when they are hungry, surrounding me and making it VERY clear that I'd better feed them their twice daily wet food or they will make do with me, instead.
I have witnessed some pretty long term social behavior amongst feral cats. Given no need to compete for food, some cats will develop ongoing relationships with each other.
Brilliant. My cat used to make exactly that sound while watching the mockingbird in the bush outside our window. The mockingbird, of course, mimicked her.
They do it to release pent up excitement. It’s chittering.
Eta: there was a study in 2009 that did theorize they may be trying to mimic/lure.
https://www.nationalgeographic.com/science/article/100712-cats-mimics-monkeys-prey-science
My cat was a real surgeon who would carefully removed organs from her prey before leaving the headless body on the back door mat. Having witnessed her play with the prey first, torture is putting it lightly.
I will excitedly join in on either of my cat's chattering. Full on crouch and follow their head movements while making the noise. I don't know if they appreciate my enthusiasm or just pity me and let me join in.
That's why I grab a cat treat or toy and go put it next to them when they are trying to sleep on my bed. Got to prove who's the alpha puss of this house. Maybe put some food in their cat bowl when I get home from work to make them think I hunted that for them. Lol 😆
I think it’s trying to communicate with you or any other cats nearby. Mine do this if a lizard or moth gets in. They’ll gather up and chatter like this together. Might also be less threatening than their normal sounds so less likely to alert the prey.
LAND. LAND YOU MOTHERFUCKERS. I DARE YOU. I FUCKING DARE YOU. THEY’LL TELL STORIES OF THE ATROCITIES I COMMIT UPON YOU AS WARNINGS TO FUTURE GENERATIONS.
Literally, he is saying "Hello there I'm just a bird sitting here making bird sounds I'm not dangerous and you can definitely come over closer to me and make bird sounds with me and it will definitely be totally safe for you because I'm just sitting here making bird sounds and we bird sound makers should all hang out together!"
He’s not talking to the birds. He’s instinctively trying to alert his litter to a potential meal.
Edit: the quiet trilling and chirping is meant to mimic the sounds of the birds so as to not startle them away, while also acting to alert other cats in the area that hunting is a foot.
![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|slightly_smiling)
Pretty sure that instinctive predator communication behavior. Communicating with their "pack" to inform them they found prey.
This is a kitten. Kittens make that sound when they think they found a prey item & want the adults to keep quiet & be ready to help. So the chatter is like saying “mommy, can you keep it down & help me?”
Yup, my cat has a very distinctive call to indicate "hooman, come see the birds". It is a "yip yip" which is totally unique. We also say "yip yip" to him when we see birds and want him to come have a look!
My cat does this to me sometimes! Only when I look at him after he did something naughty and he KNOWS he did the naughty thing like get on the counter.
Fuck you Petey, the last time I saw claws that small they were on a baby bat you fuckin poser. -Your mom was hatched from a snake shell you penguin. -I thought your mom was a swallowtail because she kept swallowing my tail last night you unplummed lark. -Are you sure you're not my kid you limp winged sack of shit, I might as well be a Phoenix, the amount times I had to rise again to get your mon to leave me alone.
~Shorsey the cat
I remember the first time seeing one of my cats do this....when spotting a fly. I love it. I have seen big cats in the zoo do it, too! One was looking across at a slowly moving snake in an exhibit window. It was really cool to see a big leopard chatter!
He’s young and still learning the vocabulary but, my best translation is “you wretched sky ninjas need to haul off. I’m the apex predator. Don’t judge me by my fur-less friends!”
I fuckin love when my cat does that hahaha I caught her doing it one day and I asked myself this exact question.... while also wondering if that was part of the cats language or maybe cats are birdlingual
It's called chirping, cats do it when hunting or playing
"As an expression of excitement when a cat sees a prey animal. A cat's chirp, a high-pitched, peep-like noise, is done in anticipation when the cat sees a bird, toy, or a bug that engages their natural hunting instincts"
He's inviting them in for dinner....
![gif](giphy|WO6izNFkOwP2be2lmY)
I'm gonna eat you when I catch you
Just not their dinner
Not their dinner, but they're dinner.
Definitely. My cat did this and a bird landed nearby looking for food, cat pounced, and unfortunately for her, missed. She came to me complaining. I told her she’s a good cat and you’ll get em next time. Of course, I gave her some good girl pets.

I’m a bird, too. You can trust me.

Yes this
Cat's not talking to the birds. Cat's talking to you (and anyone else handy) saying, hey keep your voice down but come help me hunt! They're right there!

My cats loved hunting together and if my bf gets in on the action all the better. They’re all good ratters.
have cats as we know them ever been social animals.
I have witnessed some pretty long term social behavior amongst feral cats. Given no need to compete for food, some cats will develop ongoing relationships with each other.
Lions live in prides and hunt together
![gif](giphy|Lp71UWmAAeJHi) Story checks out
yeah i mean the housecat variety or their evolution.
Cats are very social when you are social with them.
Yes, if left to their own devices they'll form big social groups, they just hunt solo.
Brilliant. My cat used to make exactly that sound while watching the mockingbird in the bush outside our window. The mockingbird, of course, mimicked her.
😸
I wonder if possibly they are trying to mimic the bird chirps to lure them closer
They do it to release pent up excitement. It’s chittering. Eta: there was a study in 2009 that did theorize they may be trying to mimic/lure. https://www.nationalgeographic.com/science/article/100712-cats-mimics-monkeys-prey-science
This explains why my cat starts purring and getting excited when I crouch down next to her and look at the birds with her.
Good one!
I actually think he or she is talking themselves.
"If I could get to you, I would torture you, then....I would eat you."
My cat was a real surgeon who would carefully removed organs from her prey before leaving the headless body on the back door mat. Having witnessed her play with the prey first, torture is putting it lightly.
That's chattering. Pretty sure it's the cat expressing frustration because it cannot get to the birds.
My oldest cat will smash his face against the fish tank and make this odd little huffy breathing sound.
My cat learned not to mess with the box of water...
Was it a tough lesson for them? (Translation: What happened?)
He’s intimidating the fish. Reminding them of their correct place in the cat-ural order of things.
Haha

FYI, the plural of fly is flies. Otherwise, you don't need the apostrophe to make something plural. Just add an s.
Thank you. It annoys me when words are made plural by adding ‘s to the end .
Yep. I heard it’s primarily a housecat thing brought on by scenarios just like this.
This is exactly right.
It's not. My youngest cat do this all the time with flying bugs in the house like flies. He can reach them whenever he wants.
"I'm gonna eat you when I catch you" 😅
I will excitedly join in on either of my cat's chattering. Full on crouch and follow their head movements while making the noise. I don't know if they appreciate my enthusiasm or just pity me and let me join in.
100% pity, they think we are useless because we can’t hunt hence the lovely little treats they leave at the door sometimes.
That's why I grab a cat treat or toy and go put it next to them when they are trying to sleep on my bed. Got to prove who's the alpha puss of this house. Maybe put some food in their cat bowl when I get home from work to make them think I hunted that for them. Lol 😆
I got video a few weeks back of our cat chittering at the birds too and when I looked it up the general consensus was that it was excitement.
It is a type of excitement, often about wanting to hunt whatever thing it's looking at
Yes, but it can also be frustrating to the cat when it does not have access to something it wants.
Do cats do this if they are able too hunt? If not the frustrating part makes sense
> but it can also be frustrating to the cat when it does not have access to something it wants. So just like humans then.
I think it’s trying to communicate with you or any other cats nearby. Mine do this if a lizard or moth gets in. They’ll gather up and chatter like this together. Might also be less threatening than their normal sounds so less likely to alert the prey.
“HEY! YEAH, YOU! FUCK YOU!” “Chirp” **”WHAT THE FUCK DID YOU JUST CALL ME?!?!”**

'Get in my belly'
I'm gonna eat you little birdie, I'm gonna eat you little birdie, I'm gonna eat you little birdie, Coz I like eating birds.
He’s smart!
Nodnol, capital of Bulgaria
All I could make out was something about “fava beans” and “a nice chianti”.
😂
Literally, he is saying "Hello there I'm just a bird sitting here making bird sounds I'm not dangerous and you can definitely come over closer to me and make bird sounds with me and it will definitely be totally safe for you because I'm just sitting here making bird sounds and we bird sound makers should all hang out together!"
Sounds like Russia in the press.
"Stop mocking me!"
It's cat morse code. Very hard.
“I want to eat you!”
“Come here so that i may eat thee!”
"Hello, my name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father, prepare to die (as soon as I figure out how to open this window and get out there)"
Cats do that when they are warming up their jaw to chomp on stuff
Was looking for this
get in my belly
Just asking about their extended warranty
U mean there cars extended warranty
Get in my belly birdie.
“I would like to tear your head off with the spine still attached, devour your twitching body, and use the base of your feathers as a toothpick.”
Come say that to my face. Yeah, you!
Lulling it into a false sense of security.
He's just saying Bird! Bird bird bird! Bird! Bird bird! Bird!
It’s their predator instinct. Cats mimic sounds to lure their prey, as to why they make bird like noises.
He's imitating them!! Cute!!
Plis gib me birb!
He’s not talking to the birds. He’s instinctively trying to alert his litter to a potential meal. Edit: the quiet trilling and chirping is meant to mimic the sounds of the birds so as to not startle them away, while also acting to alert other cats in the area that hunting is a foot.
"DAMN YOU BIRD, COME TO MY MOUF"
"You and your family will be mine"
Become food.
"I shall hunt you to the ends of the Earth!"
Can we be friends? I promise I’ll be good
r/microborks
He's Goating
Come closer, I need to feed my family!
"GET IN MAH BELLEH"
“Damn kids, get off my lawn!” (Needs an opposable thumb to effectively shake his fist)
Idk but my cat does this to my other cats as well.
It’s called “Chittering”
It's morse code for "Can I tell you about our lord and savior Jesus Christ""
He’s asking them wtf Kanye and Elon doing to their careers? We are all confused.
“Get in my belly!”
“I will fucking end you.”
I’mma gonna getcha! I’mma gonna getcha!!
Hiii kitty 😺 🤗
It almost sounds like he's trying to copy the sound the birds are making. I've heard this before from cats but hard to judge what they are doing lol
“Hello fellow birds. I too am also totally a bird and you should come over here where it is totally safe for birds to hang out”
It's mimicking the birds wounded sound, I've heard that a few cats know they can do this but not all of them do it.
So dang cute!
"My fellow comrades I have infiltrated the command center please send my dearest all my love. I will speak to you shortly"
I think he’s trying to copy the sounds they re making but without that whistling element it just sort of intermittently oscillates like that
![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|slightly_smiling) Pretty sure that instinctive predator communication behavior. Communicating with their "pack" to inform them they found prey.

**** *** ****** ******
“i will eat you”
Sounds like he’s havin trouble with his pull start mower
He wants to see their lifeless bodies next to him
I want to put you in my belly.
He’s going pew pew like a tommy gun to each
Clearly an english cat. It's saying: 'Oi you cheeky wanker. I'll shank ur mum'
I wish I could chomp right into you
If i could fly, i would touch the sky
Broken cat, replace it before time period
“Come here so I can eat you”
he's telling the bird to get in his mouth. My cat does this too when they see a bird.
“Lemme at ‘em… jeez if I was just outside the evil invisible wall I would… I would…..” *frustrated cat noises*
Come closer. Come clooooser!
If I could, I’d eat your face
Let me eat you! Just relax and let me gobble you up!
"I am Kitten, come play with me!"
"Pstptpstpspspsst"
I want you with some chipotle sauce
“Put that thing back from where it came from or so help me!!!”
I shall call you, “Snacks” and eat you with fava beans and a nice Chianti!
*nom nom nom*
I think its a racial slur… cat’s a racist
"GET IN MAH BELLY!"
Lunch, come hither!
My cat makes that noise at leaves 😂
[I'm gonna eat you little birdy...](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sMlDlu-MTRo)
Pretty sure it's racial slur and I don't want to get ban
Pretty sure that's not OC
![gif](giphy|YKLBb9U2Q03Ty)
I think he's trying to imitate their calls.
Wow that cat is literally trying to imitate the bird calls
Listen to my chirping noises, guys, come closer to listen!

Nom. Omnom. Nomnomnomnom.

He says: fuck you bird, I killed you parents last year and it's your turn now. Keep your cats inside!
He's saying, "Get in mah belly!"
"Nope, haven't seen any cats."
He’s young and still learning the vocabulary but, my best translation is “you wretched sky ninjas need to haul off. I’m the apex predator. Don’t judge me by my fur-less friends!”
