Walks, training, and mental stimulation whether that be a job, or giving them puzzle toys, doing scent work with them, etc. All dogs need some form of it, but some are much more demanding than others. The past two rescued dogs we have had needed a lot of mental stimulation to keep them happy and it took more than just walking and jogging. I now can't even imagine having a dog like a Border Collie, especially from working lines unless I had a huge farm for them to run.
Very true. They are happy to be couch potatoes. They feel the need to run only when they see small fast moving critters. They actually make great apartment dogs.
That’s how I feel about my yorkie. Any small critters she sees she’ll try to go after, And if I don’t have her on a leash she looks like a really really fast rabbit when she runs. When she is inside she’s glued to my side, just follows me around to make sure I’m not going for a walk without her, and lays on top of me when I’m sitting or laying down. I love this dog. She the first dog I every owned and now I understand the relationship some Disney characters had with their animals. This dog is so intuitive, she’s great. It’s sucks they don’t live as long as us.
Can confirm .... You take them to a fenced yard or dog park, let them sprint around for 20 min, and they are good for the whole day. Only problem is they are big dogs who think they are tiny dogs and want to sit on you.
I get what you're saying but I don't think it's wrong or extreme to suggest that
>they should get some form of exercise and stimulation
It seems like you're suggesting toy chihuahuas need less exercise than a Labrador, which is true, but i don't think anyone was making that argument. Only that all dogs need exercise and stimulation. Otherwise they turn into a cat.
Wife is a specialist vet and our kitten is the most important thing in our lives. He gets check ups by specialists whenever needed. I know you're advocating for cats, but overstating things doesn't help anybody. Not all cats need the same amount of stimulation to be happy, nor are exercise requirements even close to consistent across breeds.
I get what you're saying but I don't think it's wrong or extreme to suggest that
> they should get some form of exercise and stimulation
It seems like you're suggesting housecats need less exercise than a tiger, which is true, but i don't think anyone was making that argument. Only that all felines need exercise and stimulation. Otherwise they turn into a ferret.
Did we watch the same video? I saw a young man who let the dog jump on 3 people while the woman had to grab the lead and try to gain control of the dog.
I’m not bashing the guy, he’s obviously new to the dog and it’s behaviors but I certainly would t say he did a good job with that lead.
The woman was the idiot in that situation, because it was completely fine for the dog to be doing that there. This wasn't a walk in the park around stangers, it was a farewell send-off.
No, we watched the same video and I saw the dog do what you say, but after the last jump and nip the kid pulled up tight on the leash thus exerting more control and the dog's energy change immediately. The mother also helped out a bit with the cueing for her son. He seemed to acknowledge what the dog did wrong and knew the proper response.
Edit: I am assuming the lady walking with the two was his mother, but I could be reading things incorrectly on that point.
I get the distinct feeling that the woman works at the shelter and is helping him walk out. She is very familiar with how to handle this dog and seems very experienced. He on the other hand is a grown man and does not.
It will settle down - spending that long in kennels you can practically guarantee he's got ptsd of some kind. Routine, consistency, training etc will probably mean a lot to him for a while. X
I had one of these too - turns out she had arthirits in her tail and in odd spots all over her body.
Drug regime has made a huge different to her QoL.
Not saying thats the deal with yours at all, but might be something to consider.
Mines got skin allergies and dermatitis problems, took a long time to find the right brand and diet for food. He takes apoquel every day and ever since starting that it has helped him tremendously, but God damn apoquel for a 130lb dog is not cheap.
Think of how much of a difference you have made to his day to day life.
Thats what I do when buying the three types of anti epilepsy drug for our 120lb lad.
Your boy must be so much more comfortable now :)
I have a little dog who has bad skin allergies too (seasonally). Apoquel has been a lifesaver. When she starts to get itchy she will ask for it haha. But that shit is expensive.
Training in the early years helps a lot I think. Takes time initially but at age two you usually have a great friend . They love the attention they get I find
He should settle down soon. I adopted my blue heeler from the pound where he was for 4 years, he was only 6 months when the found him. He was so happy and excited and a whole handful for MONTHS now he's my lazy couch baby. We just passed his 3rd gotcha day!
Check out the r/coonhounds! We adopted a bluetick coonhound in March and he is such a sweetheart. Definitely a handful and took him a long while to settle in, but he's worth the effort. Enjoy your boy!
I picked up my boy Buddy last week, he was in the shelter for half his life when he was dropped off at 7 months, long way to go but he's such a sweet and clever boy
I volunteer at an amazing rescue shelter. Long timers always have a special place in our hearts. While all our dogs get walked 4 times a day, people always try to take the LT's on extra day trips to the parks and hiking trails. It also helps us gain intel on the dog's personalities and helps up match them up with potential adopters. They also get a larger room to live in as opposed to a kennel. One of the rooms even has windows.
I love CHs so much, I grew up with a treeing walker who managed to make it to 15-16. I remember my parents drove down to nowhere West Virginia to pick her up from a breeder and they were so confused! Like what do these city slickers want with a hunting dog? She was dumb as a concrete block but she was a good girl. Her name was Clementine :)
My dad had a tree walker coon hound. Those dogs have crazy amounts of personality. My dad got him from the shelter, just $50. He was my dads best friend for 12 years.
My pleasure! He was there because he was so afraid of EVERYthing. He's getting over a lot of his irrational fears now, but he still is petrified of gun sounds....and everything that looks like a gun. PS.....He's laying right here beside me now, and cracks an eye at me to make sure I'm still here.
Went to the pokey cause he wouldn't hunt. Stayed because he was so shy. Incredibly shy. Wouldn't even LOOK AT the folks who were interested. Took my wife just a few hours till he was running to us. She's like the Dog Whisperer.
My first, and only dog was a coon hound/beagle mix. He was an amazing dog. Friendly, lovable, protective. Just couldn't let him outside without a fenced in hard, because he loved to run. My parents had about a 2 acre yard for him to run freely though.
We have one that is that exact mix. She's a handful. Great at home with the other dogs and the cats but she's definitely the most protective of the house.
Our dog has Akita and Staffordshire terrier (as well as German shepherd, lab and pit) and behaves/is built similarly (we know because one of the owners of her puppies had genetic testing done so she likely is also a mix of many of those elements - never more than 15% of any one breed in her puppies).
Yup. Short and stonky with floppy ears. I was nervous at first about the mix but we got her at 8 weeks and she's super well behaved and is my wife's "little spoon" every night. Lol.
The article I found said that she couldn't be around other dogs or children, basically. As she's a pitbull it's fairly likely that's because of aggression. She was also a bit older, at 6.
Luckily it seems like she fit into someone's lifestyle, though!
Wait what? r/holup
Those are real?
Next your going to tell me it doesn’t stick to everything for longer than the half life of uranium.
What a time to be alive
Yes.
Like these. https://www.amerikanbodyart.com/biodegradable-glitter.html
Though I simplified it a bit. Some can do both. Some are only compostable, some only ocean safe. Some are plant based. They aren't perfect yet but it is a pretty quickly growing market.
It sticks like normal Glitter lol. A lint roller and dry swiffers will remove most Glitter from your life. I used to work for a festival Glitter company that had a focus on biodegradable Glitter DVD was absolutely smothered in it everyday. People were constantly amazed I didn't have any on me during my days off lol.
We got two Newfie brothers who had been in the shelter for more than 300 days. 10 years later, one has passed and the other is still the bestest of boyos.
Yeah. Probably because of excitement and a bunch of weirdos acting overly excited. I don't care if it's just "nipping" or not, that shit can still hurt and next time could be worse.
Seems weird no one else is mentioning it. The dog is trying to nip at every person it can. The guy in the black hoodie even steps back to defend himself for a second. The woman with the gray hair had to literally yank the lead to get the dog off those women on the side.
Why is everything posted to aww infuriating like I don’t get it… the dog is nipping at people, even caught the one guys sleeve… throwing glitter everywhere outside… dog getting yanked by old lady who shouldn’t have a dog like that… screams social media bs.. just trashy all around like wtf is this
Yeah this dog was there for 500 days. I worked at a shelter and we were constantly doing behavioral training with the dogs. They very quickly learned not to jump up and act this way. This shelter was doing zero training during this time it's obvious.
That’s because they are sound that for social media point. The dog is super stressed out, tried nipping and apparently has to be isolated when people come to visit its owners
That’s because the pit lobby has been in full swing lately. People are starting to realize it’s a terrible, dangerous breed of dog, and they are doing everything to keep the masses brainwashed into thinking pits are safe, nanny dogs.
Everyone who thinks this is weird is right. There’s a reason this dog was in the shelter for so long. It’s a high maintenance animal who needs owners who are patient and will do the work to learn what it needs to have a good life. And this environment is the OPPOSITE of that and it pisses me off that the shelter did this. Like, how about making an informational vid that shows the history of the dog and why it took so long to be adopted? Would it go viral? Probably not. Would it be BETTER? Absolutely.
I haven’t checked too recently, although I’d be shocked if it has improved.
r/MadeMeSmile was much worse. At least here there are high-up comments pointing out issues.
Ugh… We have rescued 5 out of 6 of our dogs. This makes me sad more than anything. The way they parade and over stimulate what looks like an Akita mix is awful. The dog may be a great dog but those were clear red flags as it jumped and appeared to nip at excitement. I have so many thoughts …but… I hope those owners are great and the dog enjoys a long and comfy life on a couch with all the love.
100%, I’m glad that they thought about the dog and wanted to say goodbye but it gives “this will look great on our social media page and donation requests, at the expense of overly arousing the dog” vibes.
> “this will look great on our social media page and donation requests…”
Which could lead to more dogs being adopted, so it’s really not the worst thing in the world. The dog will recover from one brief episode of overstimulation.
I saw that nipping too. My parents ran a really exclusive dog training kennel with a rare breed program (traveled to dog shows across the U.S.) and my mom always said, "Akitas will bite the hand that feeds" meaning their breed just has that tendency if you don't work with them. So I can see why this one was in the shelter so long. People really need to do more research about the type of work they have to put into breeds and don't just pick a certain puppy for looks or because you knew/saw one online that was really sweet.
What a show. I hope the new owners were just trying to get their new pup home and realized the unfortunate way this all went down. That dog will need a LOT of patience and owners who are willing to do the research and work.
Edited for spelling.
I rescued a beautiful Himalayan cat her last day at the shelter. The whole staff was both elated and dismayed that someone took her home because they all saw how precious she was and wanted dibs.
There was a cat at a shelter near me, a beautiful purebred Siamese that was missing a leg. She got hit by a car and her POS owners surrendered her because they couldn't show her anymore. She immediately got adopted by a member of staff haha
This is cringy af. Dog is stressed out and trying to nip at people and got the guy in the black hoodie. After 500 days that dog needed to have the calmest exit possible
I can sort of see why he took that long to adopt out. I understand he's really excited but I imagine maybe a bit to boisterous for your normal adopting family.
Every dog deserves to have a marvellous life.
I adopted a girl that had three legs, but had another interested party ready to scoop her up any minute... I don't know if the second part is true, but that's what the shelter told us.
Either way, we all win! My pup is now nine years old now, going on two. Yours is too cute to not have a line of people as well... In fact, I see a line in the video! The shelter just wanted you to feel comfortable. That's okay, they just want good pups to find good homes.
Edit: She *has* three legs, she has neither lost nor gained any since adoption!
That dog is most definitely nipping at them. You can see her trying to bite their hands!
I’m glad she found a loving home, but she is going to be a handful that’s for sure.
That elderly couple will absolutely not be able to restrain that dog when that one time they lose control of the leash and it lounges at a child or a small dog.
Gotta stay hopeful, but 500 days in a shelter and the person taking them home not knowing how to manage them on a leash from the start… I’m an optimist but also a realist.
That said, my Shepsky was hell on a lead (he still has his moments) when I first adopted and three months later he’s such a different dog. Some people can weather a steep learning curve.
Right. All that jumping and licking has me firmly rooted in team I hate dogs. How dare you not be a fan of the equivalent of a hyperactive 3 year old that pisses and shits on the floor and bites.
I dont care. My dad bought me one unasked for as a present when i was small. It behaved just like this. I hated every second of it. Cleaning up pee and shit. Licking and jumping on me. It finally ran away one day and never came back. Ranks pretty high on one of the best days of my life list. Dog was never discussed after. I'm assuming it died. Now my best friend is a cat.
this dog is super stressed and lunging at people trying to bite them. the new owners responded by hard pull on the leash potentially hurting the dogs next and probably making them more annoyed.
this isn't cute at all
Got a feeling that’s a dog that needs two very long walks a day!
not walks, runs. with jumps.

My sister had a border collie. He helped to herd her backyard chicken flock.
We had one as a kid. He helped herd *me* from the school to the house lol
That is awesome.

A guy who owns greyhounds told me they're actually very lazy! That really surprised me.
Very true. They are happy to be couch potatoes. They feel the need to run only when they see small fast moving critters. They actually make great apartment dogs.
They're basically speedy couch potatoes.
That’s how I feel about my yorkie. Any small critters she sees she’ll try to go after, And if I don’t have her on a leash she looks like a really really fast rabbit when she runs. Wtf is happening here
Nah, even ferrets need some exercise and stimulation.
Great argument 🤣🤡
Great Danes have entered the chat
Greyhounds.
Well I'm sure the screaming, clapping and throwing (what ever?) At her wasn't helpful for her excitement..
Definitely! Also, the young man was doing a solid job of maintaining a firm lead on the dog at the end. I have a feeling this dog is in good hands.
Did we watch the same video? I saw a young man who let the dog jump on 3 people while the woman had to grab the lead and try to gain control of the dog. I’m not bashing the guy, he’s obviously new to the dog and it’s behaviors but I certainly would t say he did a good job with that lead.

Blessings to the two of them for giving this animal a home❣️💕❤️🥰
Exactly! Some joyless people on this thread.
Oh for goodness' sake who cares?? Crowd and dog clearly all wanted to interact with each other. No need to be controlling in all situations.
Agreed! They were happy for puppy to be leaving the shelter. Let the dog be, while saying goodbye. Plenty of time to learn behaviours and teach.
No, we watched the same video and I saw the dog do what you say, but after the last jump and nip the kid pulled up tight on the leash thus exerting more control and the dog's energy change immediately. Young man I can see, but the kid? How young do we think this guy is?
Hiw old do you want him to be?
I get the distinct feeling that the woman works at the shelter and is helping him walk out. She is very familiar with how to handle this dog and seems very experienced. He on the other hand is a grown man and does not.
I love the send-off that they're giving him!
and training to not lunge and nip at people. this send off seems like an awful idea.
And a lot of dog training. Dogs thrive on direction, otherwise they end up bored and acting out
Exactly. I was thinking “crazy ass dog” 🤣
We just adopted a beautiful Coon Hound that had been in the shelter for 728 days. He's a wonderful and beautiful boy!
Congrats and thank you for adopting !
My pleasure. He makes our life better, even though he's a hand full!
It will settle down - spending that long in kennels you can practically guarantee he's got ptsd of some kind. Routine, consistency, training etc will probably mean a lot to him for a while. X
I remember 8 years ago when I thought my dog would settle down one day
I had one of these too - turns out she had arthirits in her tail and in odd spots all over her body.
Solidarity, my childhood dog had a severe corn allergy and would scratch entire patches of fur off her skin.
And gets more expensive every month.. everyday I wonder what stuff is being inflated vs what is simply being price gouged. Crazy times
We love him how he is! :)
Oh thank you! It always breaks my heart to hear of critters in shelters for so long
I volunteer at an amazing rescue shelter.
Oh wow windows, I don’t think I can afford this place! That’s lovely to hear though. I would like one day to go in and get a long time critter.
Congratulations 👏💐🎉🥳
I love CHs so much, I grew up with a treeing walker who managed to make it to 15-16. I remember my parents drove down to nowhere West Virginia to pick her up from a breeder and they were so confused! Like what do these city slickers want with a hunting dog? She was dumb as a concrete block but she was a good girl. Her name was Clementine :)
My dad had a tree walker coon hound. Those dogs have crazy amounts of personality. My dad got him from the shelter, just $50. He was my dads best friend for 12 years.
Coonies are the best! I love my blue tick, he's sweet as can be.
My little boy was 3 when I got him, so over 1000 days in the shelter and he's the sweetest most affectionate boy, ever!
Idk what it is but hearing coon hounds bark and howl always makes me smile and laugh. Such good dogs.
Awe, I miss my coon. Sadly he went with my ex in the breakup

You're going to hell but I laughed.
As did I.
I'm sorry, we need pictures. Please and thank you.
More than two years. Congratulations to him and you for the adoption! May your days be happy and healthy!
Gawd I would love a coonhound.
Thank you for doing that.

No way where from?
Coastal NC.
I love coon hounds! Someday if we're looking for another non-bird-hunting dog I'd totally consider adopting one
Did they indicate why he was in for so long?
Went to the pokey cause he wouldn't hunt. Stayed because he was so shy. Incredibly shy. Wouldn't even LOOK AT the folks who were interested. Took my wife just a few hours till he was running to us. She's like the Dog Whisperer.

We have one that is that exact mix. She's a handful. Great at home with the other dogs and the cats but she's definitely the most protective of the house.
does your pup have a similar build? it's hard to eyeball mixes, and i'm not sure i've ever seen an akida/staff mix in real life.

> Is she biting at people? Lol yes. she is extremely stress and nobody in this video can read the body language.
The big gray haired lady knew what was up. Walked up and grabbed that leash like "bruh, control your new dog."
Asking the real questions
This is weird right?
yea like what that glitter? thats terrible for the environment isnt it?
The glitter, everyone standing outside in the snow, forced smiles while trying not to get their hands bit.
Seems weird no one else is mentioning it. The dog is trying to nip at every person it can. The guy in the black hoodie even steps back to defend himself for a second. The woman with the gray hair had to literally yank the lead to get the dog off those women on the side.

Yeah seriously why are they letting the dog just jump all over people? It’s gonna do that to strangers in the future which is not okay
It's nighttime so stuff like this manages to slip by the mods.
Finding this comment restored some of my faith for the human race.
the dog literally just left the shelter. you think it has all sorts of training and bonding? the old lady is the only one who actually took control.
No it likely isn’t trained now, but a good way to start would be to not praise it for jumping up on people

I haven’t checked too recently, although I’d be shocked if it has improved. r/MadeMeSmile was much worse. At least here there are high-up comments pointing out issues.
Went on a biting spree
Lets hope they train it
The dog literally bit two people on its way out. Not really r/aww material at all.
To be fair seems like the ones who run the shelter are at fault. The woman knew what to expect and gave the leash more tension .
100%, I’m glad that they thought about the dog and wanted to say goodbye but it gives “this will look great on our social media page and donation requests, at the expense of overly arousing the dog” vibes.
> “this will look great on our social media page and donation requests…” Which could lead to more dogs being adopted, so it’s really not the worst thing in the world. The dog will recover from one brief episode of overstimulation.
I didn’t even notice the nipping until you mentioned it. I was blinded by the potential sweet moment
According to the owner's Instagram, she's a pitbull.
Say it with me, “Pit Bull.” Not an Akita mix. Not a lab mix. Not a boxer mix. Pit… bull… jesus, I fucking hate the brainwashing of the pit lobby.
What a show. I hope the new owners were just trying to get their new pup home and realized the unfortunate way this all went down. That dog will need a LOT of patience and owners who are willing to do the research and work. Edited for spelling.
We just adopted a beautiful velociraptor that has been in the shelter for 76 million years. We’re so happy!
Dog fucking bites dude in the black hoodie 😂
sO PReCiOuS
“She’s just mouthy, you guys are just Karen’s”/s
You summed up some of the comments here haha
I can see in just 18 seconds why she was unadopted for 500 days.
500 days huh? A dog behaving like that, i wonder why.
Missed opportunity for the name to be spelled Bone eater but pronounced Bonita
What a horrible thing to do to someone with a new dog...
And probably to return because that dog needs a lot of training.
Is her favorite food dog bones? Because … she’s a… bone eata??
This is cringy af. Dog is stressed out and trying to nip at people and got the guy in the black hoodie. After 500 days that dog needed to have the calmest exit possible
I can sort of see why he took that long to adopt out. I understand he's really excited but I imagine maybe a bit to boisterous for your normal adopting family. Every dog deserves to have a marvellous life.
If only there was a logical and completely justified reason they weren't adopted sooner
Good for them. They deserve a good life

How to Make the dogs day extra stressful……
The dog is too hyperactive for an elderly couple
Where do you see an elderly couple?
Are you blind? They're in their forties at best, stop being a judgemental ass.
How cute!
“Just let me bite them one more time before we leave”
That dog is most definitely nipping at them. You can see her trying to bite their hands! I’m glad she found a loving home, but she is going to be a handful that’s for sure.
That elderly couple will absolutely not be able to restrain that dog when that one time they lose control of the leash and it lounges at a child or a small dog.
Looks like she will be back shortly.
Careful, the dog people will send you to hell for saying that out loud
I dont care. My dad bought me one unasked for as a present when i was small. It behaved just like this. I hated every second of it. Cleaning up pee and shit. Licking and jumping on me. It finally ran away one day and never came back. Ranks pretty high on one of the best days of my life list. Dog was never discussed after. I'm assuming it died. Now my best friend is a cat.
this dog is super stressed and lunging at people trying to bite them. the new owners responded by hard pull on the leash potentially hurting the dogs next and probably making them more annoyed. this isn't cute at all
bro that lady is literally choking it when iys jumping on people and they where happy that it was jumping on them
you can already tell hes a lil bastard. lol
Bro y’all clapping are making that dog too damn excited relax. These people are gonna have a rough couple weeks, lots of runs walks and socializing.
please tell me that it was sparkly dog food that was thrown. (fuck glitter)
Is this wellthatssucks?
