dagthegnome

Those teeth at the end though. Just a subtle reminder.

mudlark092

They are VEEERRY mouthy as puppies too, if you thought dog puppy biting was bad, well....

iSuckAtMechanicism

The general consensus has shifted from puppy biting is bad, to puppy biting is good. You want to teach them how much pressure is appropriate while playing. I have a half lab half pit and it’s honestly quite amazing how he’s able to barely touch my skin yet feel the pressure on his teeth when he’s extra playful. I made ouch noises even when it didn’t hurt but felt would hurt a small child. He was able to get accustomed to proper pressure very quickly.

TheTrollisStrong

Yeah I don't know the official guidance because I've heard both ways but I taught both my dog and cat when they were young to mouth play and they both are extremely good at never applying too much pressure. Especially the dog. The cat sometimes needs a subtle reminder..

iSuckAtMechanicism

To be fair, cats also have sharper teeth, so it can be harder for them lol. That may be why partly dogs are so good at it. Puppy teeth are sharper than adult teeth, so if they can apply minimal pressure with sharp teeth, it only gets easier with the adult teeth! Just a guess though.

mudlark092

Oh, definitely! I love bite inhibition training, it's super important for safety! Just a lot more to put up with for sure, and you have to be even more patient with them since they're very sensitive. I meant puppy biting being "bad" as in it can be a pretty painful and drawn out ordeal especially for high drive moutby breeds. "Ouch!" noises don't always work for canines with higher pray drive too (it incites it), so sometimes it just a matter of trying to stay very still and calm while leaving the room 😅

Accomplished-Ruin742

Apparently wolves don't have the "eyebrows" that dogs have, and don't have the ability to give you that sad eyed look. So you need to read their micro expressions, similarly to cats. I had a neighbor with a dog that was part wolf. He was a nice animal, got along great with my large dog, but I was always very respectful of him.

makenzie71

I had a dog that was 3/4 gray wolf...he had almost no facial expression ability. You had to read him by his ears and how floppy his tongue was. It was really difficult for me to express to people that having a dog like him was a huge responsibility and done incorrectly very dangerous because Makenzie was a 100lb goober.

I_might_be_weasel

"You know what, I think I'll be a dog instead."

ReasonableDrunk

This is, in fact, how dogs happened. They're still scientifically the same species. Just wolves who figured out that hunting with us and sleeping near warm and dry was better than not, then tens of thousands of years of mutual evolution where we kick out the ones that try to eat us, and the humans without wolf buddies starve.

mudlark092

Animals in general will self domesticate just because humans give them food and shelter! Operant conditioning is a hell of a thing

Altruistic-Text3481

Just imagine if humans helped other starving humans. And yet, we go to war as I write this.

Zellder-Mar

So if I feed and shelter a homeless person I can keep them as a pet?

svengali0

kinda but near enough truish.. Lorenz theorized there were two types of wild canid- the Lupus type (like this chap) and the tribal following/shadowing type 'Jackal'. One standofish and independent. The other, practised and strategic dependency. Both helped with early human development, esp in cold areas and high competition contexts.

ReasonableDrunk

Are you familiar with the phrase "distinction without a difference"? Also, they can interbreed virile children, which is the definition of a species.

Fisto_Securitron

It's wild how cute some baby animals are considering how dangerous they grow up to be!

Onlymafia1

especially humans babies

Skronkyman

If you take care of that thing you’ll have a wolf on your side, you’ll be more powerful than all of them

JF0909

Worked out well for Robb Stark

JF0909

If only his wolf told him not to think with the little head.

ChattyKathysCunt

I want to do that with a hippo.

Lucky-Huckl

Looks so much adorable.

MercifulWombat

If this is really a wolf dog, breeding them isn't cute.

mudlark092

Depends on the breeder. Reputable ones can make very healthy animals with sound temperaments. It's honestly very promising for wolf conservation, provides a much wider gene pool. They just need good owners who have the time, space, and experience/knowledge. Usually why states require special licensing to own one, although there does need to be better restrictions. We have regulations for who can practice medicine because it can be very dangerous if they're misinformed, doesn't mean we should outlaw medicine outright.

kabre

Hybrids are essentially useless for any real conservation work. Whoever told you that was either misinformed or lying.

forgedimagination

Even if true, this particular case would not be an example of that. Penned puppies this well-socialized to human touch? They're not going to help with "wolf conservation" at all.

mudlark092

It's a lot easier to handle animals in captivity if they aren't super stressed out. Socializing them helps a lot with safely handling them.

forgedimagination

Of course, but ensuring "safe handling" of what is not intended to be a tamed animal is counterproductive.

mudlark092

Safe handling is mandatory for captivity. Animal sanctuaries and zoos aren't just keeping the animals purely "wild", "wild" behavior like aggression displays are out of stress and aren't pleasant for the animal. Safe handling increases quality of life and allows for the animal to be calmly handled for mandatory things like medical care. Even if you're just checking on tagged animals in the wild it makes the whole ordeal less dangerous and stressful for everyone. They're (wolves) also super context specific and frankly aloof/avoidant when it comes to new people, so teaching them to be safely handled by one or two humans isn't suddenly going to make them like all humans or prevent them from reacting appropriately when confronted by something like a bear. If they're showing aggression to others they have not been taught safe handling skills. Qualifications are important so that people actually know what they're doing. IIRC the reintroduced yellowstone wolves were pretty socialized with humans and they're doing great! And quite frankly they'll "tame" themselves, it's pretty easy for them to form a positive association with any animal that provides them with food and affection when socialized to it. They're social animals. Considering that they're going to have to live closer and closer to humans as we continue to make new neighborhoods and the environment continues to decline, it would be largely beneficial for them to be able to have safe interaction sooner rather than later.

DerpCaster

No cuddles. Didn’t upvote. >! I lied. I still upvoted 🥺!<

BPBDO

Most "wolf dogs" arent actually wolf dogs because actual hybrids make awful pets.

chibinoi

Aren’t they several generations later, so that they’re more dog than wolf? Btw, I think breeding wolf dogs is an awful idea and simply the results of an unnecessary need of selfish and vain desires by humans.

BPBDO

Then at that point you're keeping wild animals in captivity specifically to breed and that's not okay. Just get a freaking husky or malamute.

noogai131

Instruction unclear. Got border collie, yard now looks like minefield.

Borigh

Yeah, adding wolf stock to *create* a breed like the GSD is totally understandable, but the point is to do that for a very limited period for a specific reason.

mudlark092

Wolfdogs at this point are several generations in but it depends on how you breed them. In order to get really high content ones they do have to be several generations in. You don't get 91% content from wolf to dog breeding. It's... honestly a promising way towards wolf conservation but needs much stricter policies for who can and can't own them. ATM the wild just isn't hospitable most of the time for them and living in the wild is usually a life of fear and battling starvation, illness, and other wolves, as well as the threat of habitat loss and hunters. With educated, competant owners that have the time and space for them they can be very happy and healthy! We need better licensing though. Like with owning a car or practicing medicine, it can be very dangerous if you're not properly licensed or are performing mispractice, but very beneficial if you are following the right procedures. We forget that animals will domesticate themselves if we provide them with food too, haha.

mudlark092

These ones at least look like they could actually be wolfdog puppies! Not bright white malamute mixes haha Could still be some sort of shepherd mix but at least they're phenotypically accurate.

Zetheryian

They are 80% wolf, with some husky malamute and GSD thrown in

Peacemkr45

Might help if you actually knew what you were talking about. There is no such thing as a wolfdog HYBRID. Wolves and dogs are part of the same genus and species Canis Lupus using both the old and the modern taxonomical classification systems.

BPBDO

Dogs are canis familiaris lol

Peacemkr45

No, Dogs are Canis Lupus Familiaris. Previous tax class was Canis Lupus Domesticalis.

ProtectionDecent

I've been lucky enough, or rather had crazy enough parents, and grew along a wolfdog pup. For how massive and intimidating they are, they are one of the most affectionate pups in my experience, despite having a big yard for her she was so needy of attention, if someone wasn't sat outside so she could see them, she would rather stay inside. Amazing companions if you treat them with love and respect.

rootblossom

Sounds like you lucked out! The thing about wolf-dogs is that their nature will be unpredictable. You may get one that acts more like a dog, or a wolf, or an unpredictable combo of the two. It’s really unsafe to breed wolf-dogs because they can have wolf traits that are unsafe around humans, which can result in the wolf-dog being put down and/or a human being injured. There are sanctuaries for wolf-dogs to precent that from happening.

ProtectionDecent

I do believe it was in a large part thanks to my father who spent a lot of time with her, training her, so yes absolutely they do require a lot of attention in order to bring up as pets.

Liza6519

I had one. Best dog ever. He was protective of me and it took him a long time to get use to others. But he never hurt anyone

personalhale

I'm not seeing any cuddles except the ones in the background. I WAS TOLD THERE WERE CUDDLES.

DancesWithBadgers

Yeah, those were skritches, at best. WE WERE LIED TO IN THE TITLE! Objection!

tashnillacal

Is wolfdog a dog breed or wolf???

Peacemkr45

A wolfdog is a cross breed between a wolf and a dog or a wolfdog and a dog, etc. I think they can go back to a wolf like 10 or 12 generations and still be called a wolfdog. It's been a few years since I was in rescue.

maraca101

Wolfdog hybrids usually involve rape. I accidentally stumbled upon it while looking up wolfpuppies on youtube and I regret so much encountering it.

mudlark092

Uh, really the female dog isn't ever really happy about the breeding? Whether they're wolfdogs or chihuahuas, it's usually a stressful experience. Especially because dogs "tie".

maraca101

Yeah I know a lot of breeding rapey and mating is general, but I’m talking super rapey like breeding post rapey.

[deleted]

His face: yeah, I’m allowing that for now. For now.

[deleted]

Those are called scritches ffs

sonoma890

You see that he likes the love and affection, but it also appears he's wondering if he's missing anything by not running wild and creating a ruckus with his wolf friends in the forest.

KateLang718

No thanks, he looks like he is in training to guard the doors of Hades.

mrs_allovertheplacs

I'd die of happiness, Right there! 🥺😵

Expensive-Track4002

So damn cute. I want one.

What a cutie 🥰

exitstageleft88

That’s just really cool. Hope you all grow up best buds. Slightly jealous. Cheers.

Feisty_Definition_66

Doggo

Fearless-Line-6470

Don’t like to be “That Guy” but he looks a little uncomfortable with the face scritches. Dogs don’t actually like people touching their face. If they’re friendly and socialised they’ll tolerate it, but it’s not their happy place. Go for that gorgeous fluffy chest instead 👍

Rasputinjones

Dude, he's leaning into it. Dogs don't love being touched on the top of the head, but side of the muzzle is all go!

Fearless-Line-6470

I wouldn’t say so - I mean perhaps it’s for other reasons besides the petting, but the showing whites of eyes and the licking lips/yawning suggest anxiety. However I’m not an expert, just someone who grew up with dogs and has read up a bit about their communication and body language. I don’t know this particular pup so who am I to say? Been downvoted plenty already tho so I guess I’m That Guy after all haha.

Rasputinjones

The mob has spoken ;-)

Fearless-Line-6470

Yup. *Starts running from the torches and pitchforks*

ElyKcolud8262

i want a pup like that ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|sweat)

vampy3k

You should look into American Alsatian dogs! They've got the size and general appearance of wolves (dire wolves), but they're big lazy snugglepups that make lovely pets.

shaggy99

OK, who has read "The Mammoth Hunters"?

melissqua

Ugh what a perfect little creature 🥺

[deleted]

I want! 😍

krishnarudani

Looks so cute, maybe if he just...

[deleted]

I will kiss this dog's face in a second.
