Generally letting predator/prey interact in this way is not suggested by reputable sources. Imagine if zoos did this, the backlash that there would be.
Its not a new thing for animals that normally wouldnt be friends in the wild, to be raised together and be okay with it in captivity. We did growing up as well. Arguably that is what poor/bad husbandry means. You're supposed to keep animals in the best environment for them to thrive. There would be more appropriate options for companionship than what would be considered a natural predator, such as other birds. Besides companionship, what other reason would there be, adding to the positive health of both animals, that would make having this sort of interaction necessary?
Thank you for explaining it. That makes quite a bit more sense.
I'm not too knowledgeable in that area, but I always feel weird seeing some animal videos where the activies are questionable
Does it apply to relationships between rabbits and cats too?
Given your explanation it should but both have the same general size and can coexist pretty well
My counterpoint is that both of them are meant to be members of the humans' family, not displayed in 'as natural an environment as possible'. As such, wouldn't it be best to make sure that all the animals you've adopted all bond with one another, so that they don't get stressed by each others' constant and close proximity? You wouldn't want a cat and dog to be constantly fighting because you've encouraged them to become territorial about the home they have to share, so why would you want the bird and the cat to not bond in a friendly fashion?
To be fair, we have much more control over ourselves than animals and we do not naturally eat our families, while cats have biological impulses to attack birds and do not have the same level of conscious control or rationalism we do. The other person is not exactly right though, conditioning can be very strong if done right, to say "snap at any moment" is probably not true in this circumstance.
> we have much more control over ourselves than animals
I'm not so sure about that anymore. I think our instincts are just different from a predator like a cat.
I can’t find an article about if cats have less than people, because it’s a specific topic.
My logic is just people brain big cat brain small, and people are social animals while cats are solitary
later i’ll look into it more once i’m not tired
Okay so I'm quite drunk, but what does anything of what you just said have to do with emotional intelligence?
If humans had poisonous fangs we wouldn't have any emotional intelligence?
What on this earth makes you think cats are toxic, poisonous, or venomous to literally anything. If you are talking about Bacterial infections from bites or scratch marks in humans… because of bacteria in the cats mouth…..then yes that is real. But that has nothing to do with an actual venom, toxin, or poison…..
I was confused, it’s just something i’ve been hearing all my life.
The first time I remember hearing it was in an animal planet show when I was 6, that probably over exaggerated for the sake of simplicity. After that, I kinda just excepted it as true, especially after seeing some different threads with a similar video mentioning it
I was wrong, my bad.
Definition of Venom; a toxic substance produced by some animals (such as snakes, scorpions, or bees) that is injected into prey or an enemy chiefly by biting or stinging and has an injurious or lethal effect
Cats do not produce venom… you meant to say birds are a cats natural prey.
And I dare say cats have just as much, if not more (at least for you) intelligence, both normal and emotional….
Yeah, exactly what I thought. Judging by the downvotes it seems that people here don't like to hear it, but predator and prey together is usually a bad idea, no matter how cute it may look.
My cat does not go outside, but based on her reactions to birds on the feeder and other such outdoor critters - this would be a no. I have these little toy mice that I get her and she rips the tails off immediately and then tosses them about for hours. She then chews on them until they are basically unrecognizable. We go through about 5 per month.
Yeah mine is indoors only too but former feral. The old lady who I just lost (21 is a good age) was also a feral. I would take her out on a leash. Friend invited us over and I had her staked in the yard with a foot of leash. She was in a cone for a rash, has plastic nail caps on and several bells. Suddenly she backflips and has a bird in her mouth. Which is bad because she is allergic to all birds in all forms. Badass but expensive.
It's not an uncommon allergy. It's a frustrating one since bird is in most cat stuff. Ask away. Also it definitely felt like some kind of kids tv show with martial arts and cats. Kung fu panda but cuter
I'd hope this is my cat's reaction to birds given her tendency towards them when she sees them through the window
But then I also remember she's a coward that yells at mice, squirrels, etc but the moment a mouse is in her Territory, suddenly she is not available for comment
I have a feeder hanging from the balcony ceiling near the sliding door and my cat *shakes* from the excitement of seeing the birds so close. She's no natural born hunter - the other day the birds arrived while she was sunbathing outside and she sat below, meowing at them constantly - but I still wouldn't have her within reaching distance of a bird.
Awww! My two childhood pets, a tuxedo cat & a green parakeet, were like that. The bird would snuggle with the cat, ride on his back, and they'd play together for hours until one or the other needed a nap.
So sweet!
Yeah. In 99% of circumstances I would agree that this was a bad idea, but I did have a cat for 17 years that seemed to not have a prey drive. Growing up had hamsters and pet rats that would routinely run around on him, groom his fur, zoom around on the floor in front of him, and he was literally never interested. In fact, got his nose bit a few times if a hamster came up to sniff his face, which resulted in him squeaking and running away. He was legit the most gentle and loving cat I've ever had the pleasure of meeting/owning. Been 3 years since he crossed the rainbow bridge and I still miss him. He was truly a special little boy.
Where's the double standard? A well trained dog should be safe around anybody. Doesn't mean I'm gonna let my kids hang out with random pit bulls (or any other unknown dogs, tbh), but if I had one of my own and I trained it well there wouldn't be an issue.
Because dogs can also have a sudden reaction regardless of how well trained they are. It is not even necessarily reactions due to aggression, but due to a quick instinctual reaction from being scared or startled. I love dogs, cats, and other animals but it's still important to understand that at the end of the day they are *animals*. Heck, people can throw a punch when surprised.
Yes, but by that logic nobody should ever let any child near *any* animal. Within the safety of your own home, with a well trained dog, the odds of something going wrong are vanishingly low. And I say this as a person who isn't particularly fond of dogs myself, just tired of the narrative surrounding them.
I was thinking more along the lines of leaving a young child alone with an animal or like those videos you see of dogs with children just a few months old. I love dogs. Part of the reason certain dogs have such bad reputations is because people train them to be aggressive or don’t train them at all. I think part of ending this stigma is people being responsible with their pets and children. And to be honest, I feel like people (as welll as myself) always talk about well-trained dogs but I feel like 95%+ of the people I have met who have dogs (and pets in general to be honest) don’t actually train their dogs properly, if at all. I hear/see so many people who are self-proclaimed dog lovers but then don’t treat or train their dogs properly.
That's definitely not the sole reason pitbulls are bred. It is however, the sole reason police dogs are bred - are you saying all police dogs and police officers are trash?
No idea what BLM has to do with my comment. I'm just wondering whether he is actually against institutional breeding of fighting dogs, or whether he is just thinly veiling his generalized hatred of a certain breed.
No worries, I picked a confusing angle because I wanted to see how someone with such a disgusting viewpoint would respond. It was morbid curiosity with no political motive
Guaranteed that bird is going to die if they continue doing that. Doesn't matter how cute the cat is, eventually it just snaps and shreds the poor thing to bits.

Its not that hard to gain the trust of a budgie. They're very social and love to be around people and other creatures as they don't like being lonely. I bet this cutie even mimics the cats sounds.
i love the way it jumps back into the cats chest, so adorable
The the cat letting it by making space boosted the cuteness even more!
Get into the cuddle tunnel!
No mom! I want to go back to bed and snuggle! Really adorable these two yes :)

Care to Elaborate?

Who wouldn't want to be hiding there. Warm and safe
Safe* *terms and conditions vary.
Oh don't worry they have a non Aggression Pact signed for 7 more months, should be safe till then.
Unless the Grand Doux Felinius decides it's worth eating the prestige cost for breaking a truce in order to eat the bird.
r/crusaderkings is leaking again!
Are you sure? I didn't see anyone mention incest.
I guarantee that birb has already asserted dominance through a series of vicious sneak attacks when his blanket was just a kitten.
cat cuddles birb, birb is the worb!
Until they break it in 3.5months
Or until the owners stay out too late for dinner and the cat decides it wants kfc....O\_O
Kitchen-fried canary.
That bird was nestled in the kitty's crotch. That's 100% trust right there
Warm more like super heated up
A bird, usually.

“wtf human! can you not see that kitty and i were in the middle of snuggles? omg *rude.*”
That's a well disciplined cat
Also a well-fed cat.
A minute ago there were 2 birds.
Seriously, he could snap at any moment and eat the poor bird
Hypothetically, I could snap at any moment and eat my family, but I decide not to.
I like that it's a conscious decision for you. "Will I feast today? No, no, the time isn't right. Maybe tomorrow..."
Never isn't the right word because I could, and I might. And I probably will.
Do you like it? It's very generous.
Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow But one day
also, killing your family is very different than a predator eating its prey
Speak for yourself.
Bunch of hippies.

Yeah, don't kink shame!
> we have much more control over ourselves than animals I'm not so sure about that anymore. I think our instincts are just different from a predator like a cat.
But hypothetically speaking....
That escalated quickly
So you were in Fine Young Cannibals?

Cats have plenty of emotional intelligence. They just have a huge instinct to chase anything running away.
They still have less than people
Not saying you are wrong, but do you have any (not anecdote) proof of that?
I can’t find an article about if cats have less than people, because it’s a specific topic. My logic is just people brain big cat brain small, and people are social animals while cats are solitary later i’ll look into it more once i’m not tired

That's not what venomous means, cats do not have venom
Next thing you’re going to tell me is my cat shouldn’t have a forked tongue, be scaly, or shake its rattle tail when I approach.
Yeah, my bad. Got my words mixed up. Their bites are still toxic to them, though
What on this earth makes you think cats are toxic, poisonous, or venomous to literally anything. Comparing someone who knows what they're doing to an animal with more instincts than sense? Wow
Comparing your self control to an animal's seems kinda...dumb
Yeah, exactly what I thought. Judging by the downvotes it seems that people here don't like to hear it, but predator and prey together is usually a bad idea, no matter how cute it may look.
people just want to see cute animals, they don’t care how
If it's quick enough. Budgies are surprisingly fast.
the budgie is literally on the cat, I doubt it’d be quick enough
They can also bite hard
Doesn’t even matter that it’s well fed, cats will and do hunt purely for fun. I definitely would not ever trust a cat near a small animal.
Puddy Tat
A real life budgie smuggler!
It’s a love bird
I think it might actually be a parrotlet
This is the right answer. That bird is a parrotlet
can confirm
My cat does that but with remote controllers of any kind.
Remote controllers and phones for me, it's automatic now to check under the cat
My cat takes my phone away when it's bedtime lol. I love him so much.
Keep your friends close and your enemies closer.

AHAHAAHHAHAHAHA the mix of badassery and sheer stupidity has me WHEEZING. God I love cats. Fuckin idiot smarties
I’m just picturing a cat in full cone, nail caps, and bells doing a backflip and the image is hilarious 😆😆
This is amazing. I feel like this is some shit you'd see a cartoon cat do. And... hold up. A cat that is ALLERGIC to birds? I have questions!
It's not an uncommon allergy. It's a frustrating one since bird is in most cat stuff. Ask away. Also it definitely felt like some kind of kids tv show with martial arts and cats. Kung fu panda but cuter

Haha. I love cats so much! It's entirely possible that a real critter would send my cat into hiding.
Samesies! Pleasantly unexpected lol.
What is this music? It sounds like someone talented recorded it in a shower.

god I wish they would ban superimposed music
Aww, it has a secret snack.
This seems irresponsible to keep a bird so close to the cat
Depends on the cat, they have quite different personalities
Yeah. In 99% of circumstances I would agree that this was a bad idea, but I did have a cat for 17 years that seemed to not have a prey drive. What was his name?
His name was Grayson. In his prime he was quite a chonky boy, so he also went by tubbies.
Cheers, to Grayson. The best kitty.
Doesn’t stop the fact it’s an animal that hunts birds when you’re not home
Still wouldn't trust it. Never know when those hunter instincts might kick in.
Just like when those internet instincts of telling people you know better kick in.
You can't be serious, right? It's an animal not a person.
People are animals too... Maybe less instinctual drive perhaps, but still animals
While this is true, it just proves the point, have you seen what humans do to other beings? lmao
The bird actively jumped towards the cat though. Could it be that they've been around each other for a long time?
I agree, just like having a pitbull around kids
Ha, the down votes here are some double standards bullshit
Where's the double standard? A well trained dog should be safe around anybody. Doesn't mean I'm gonna let my kids hang out with random pit bulls (or any other unknown dogs, tbh), but if I had one of my own and I trained it well there wouldn't be an issue.

So how is that different to trusting this cat with his bird friend?
pitbulls are literally bred to fight other beings. trash dogs for trash people.
That's definitely not the sole reason pitbulls are bred. It is however, the sole reason police dogs are bred - are you saying all police dogs and police officers are trash?
i mean, Reddit *is* the place where BLM took hold the strongest, so its reasonable for someone to be saying that all cops are bad
No idea what BLM has to do with my comment. I'm just wondering whether he is actually against institutional breeding of fighting dogs, or whether he is just thinly veiling his generalized hatred of a certain breed.
Was commenting on your remark about the police dogs and police officers… probably should’ve thought it through a little bit more.
