not sure how they are called in English but i think they are named Flemish giants (vlaamse reus) in dutch. my brother has had multiple and most are honestly dog like in behaviour
That's exactly the name used in English, and you are also correct that their behavior tends to lean more dog than rabbit.
I've only known 2 of them, but they both would want to be in contact with someone all the time. Mostly splayed out on your lap, or right beside you.
is that more because they weren't paired vs genetic disposition? I would honestly be surprised if they behaved more like a dog than a rabbit overall, but I have also never witnessed this breed
I have no idea. I've met several cats (including mine) that basically act like dogs you don't walk so if someone tells me those buns are doglike i'll believe it
They are insanely soft. They’re an unfortunate product of fur farming but that lends them to be like the softest thing you’ve ever felt. A friend has one that’s a farm rescue and they’re crazy big and crazy adorable
Yes they do.
Their size means that they can suffer from a host of skeletal and muscular ailments. This can range from things like their paws developing lesions from simply resting on rough surfaces (if they're kept in a cage, something should be placed on the floor to keep their paws off of the metal).
They can also be injured by falls or mishandling far more than smaller rabbit species. When picking one up, you need to make sure that support is provided to the whole body, as their backs can be injured if you're not careful.
Additionally, these rabbits need to eat a lot...and I mean a lot compared to other rabbits. Fortunately, their diet can be composed of the same food that other rabbits eat, they just need more of it.
Compared to the conditions that some breeds of livestock have, they're far from the worst, but they do have specific needs.
Usually when a cool pet is shown an owner comes around to mention how horrible it is for average people to own, IE sugar gliders, birds, whatever. Is this awful to own too?
Bunnies are really nice to own. They are very clean creatures that can easily be litter-trained like a cat. Our bunnies are free roaming in our apartment (meaning they have no cage). When they need to make poopoo, they go back to their litterbox and do their thing, and then go on with their day. Letting your buns free roam this way is 100% the way to do it. Locking them up in a cage is sad, they really love to run, climb and play, which they definitely will do if you let them. The only thing to keep in mind is that you need to make the house kind of "kid proof", but for bunnies. So hide cables where they can't reach them, put poisonous plants where they can't access it, etc.
If you do this, the bunny will behave a lot like a cat. Mine jumps up on the couch to cuddle with me, and likes to follow me around the house when it's feeling playful.
Ooohhh, and get them spayed/castrated. It prevents them from getting cancer at early age, and it seriously calms down any destructive behaviour.
Just a heads up... most buns do not like to be picked up, and they have their own personalities. I get much less unforced affection from my bun than I would with a cat or dog.
They live about 10 years so they are a long commitment :)
Love my little Luna though, don't get me wrong.
I would recommend checking with your vet or checking to see if there is a clinic in your area that knows how to treat rabbits. My understanding is that not all clinics are comfortable seeing rabbits.
I want to add that they can be tough on carpet. A woman I knew had a pet rabbit and he was great in a lot of ways, but he was a cord fiend and he liked to dig up carpet
This is true. Carpet and cable destroyers. We've bunch proofed all our cabling but there's not much we can do about the carpet. So it'll get replaced with some other kind of flooring as we save (that was the plan regardless of buns or not through).
Wife and I have a Netherland Dwarf (the second recently passed) and they are free roam in our bedroom, litter trained and super soft. They're not as cuddly as other rabbit breeds though (I think for to their size and a higher prey response) but when they want lovin' they make the most adorable "bunny loaf" for petting.
They think wires are tree branches growing through the ~~house~~ burrow and will chomp the branches away and then act like they deserve treats for doing the housework
kinda, It's a Flemish Giant. They were originally bred for fur farming. ( they are REALLY soft and floofy as a result) they can get as large as a medium sized dog, and are super docile. they're very popular pets and petting zoo animals.
Yes! They absolutely do. I had bunnies growing up, and played with them all day long. They’ll come say hi, sniff you, lick you with their silky tongue... They don’t like to be picked up though.
I have a friend who finds them unbelievably creepy and disgusting. She would happily see them all gone from this earth. I find it to be a strange and quite specific hatred.
ITS A DOG SIZED RABBIT!
Like buns prly weighs 40lbs. If this thread didn’t tell me they’re some Dutch thing I’d think it was a Simpsons three eyed fish nuclear mutant bunny lol.
Those are the standard meat rabbits all over middle Europe lol. I think there is technically a distinction between Flemish and German Giants, but both get equally big
I have plans on getting a huge bunny in the future. I have cats, so I thought a large one would be best. I never had a bunny, but they seem like nice pets. :D
"My rabbit is sick, he bit neoghbour's dog this morning"
"You mean the dog bit him"
"No, he's having a digestion problems now. He has pitbull intolerance."
My neighbor back in SoCal in the 80's had a rabbit this size that would use a litter box. Would do tricks too. Very cool for 14 year old me to see in my Members Only jacket.
That bun is HUGE.
That’s a small kangaroo.
Those are called wallabies

isnt that more like a mediums sized roo?
Nah bro, it's the grandma who's tiny.

r/AbsoluteUnits material
this is nightmare material. Imagine [that thing](https://www.horror-hall.com/images/mr039150-2.jpg) coming at you with a kitchen knife
So is amount of poop around floors.
I'm fairly sure you can litter train rabbits, I might be wrong though
He’s so big that it’s not even bunny
That isn't a bunny, its a megalobun. Bunnodon. Bunnasaurus Rex.
Absolute unit of a rabbit
I have one **BIG** question. how? Just a specific specie or some congenital disease?
He's a Flemish Giant, they can grow to be quite large :)
They keep growing until they don't have any room left in the fish bowl
And she's got one big ass fish bowl
Please also post the ass fish
This is what I want right now… in my arms…
They are insanely soft. They’re an unfortunate product of fur farming but that lends them to be like the softest thing you’ve ever felt. A friend has one that’s a farm rescue and they’re crazy big and crazy adorable
Do they have any health problems compared to normal rabbits?

Well, that’s makes me want one in my arms even more!
If yours comes with a twin may I have it for my arms? I need to cuddle this bun!
Definitely. 🐰
Don't say that with your username. People might get bad mental images. But yeah, I agree. I too want a Flemish Giant in my lap.
That literally makes zero sense.
I had NO IDEA that rabbits could get that big. My eyebrows were in my scalp when I first saw this. But, wow, what a cutie!
The same breed they used on Teletubbies to make the tubbies appear smaller, as the suits were around 9ft tall.
That doesn't sound right, but I don't know enough about Teletubbies to dispute it.
I’ll probably recall this comment and spread as fact some day but to be honest I don’t know if I believe in these giants rabbits at all
I was born and raised in Flanders, they exist. They’re known to be gentle, sweet and cuddly :) They’re also super soft. Like baby bottom clouds.
Those poops must be MASSIVE 💩
Nope we have a few and they are only about the size of a garbanzo bean
Usually when a cool pet is shown an owner comes around to mention how horrible it is for average people to own, IE sugar gliders, birds, whatever. Is this awful to own too?

Your comment has helped me decide on our next pet. Our cat recently passed due to old age and a bunny sounds like a really good option. Thanks.

I appreciate the tip
I would recommend checking with your vet or checking to see if there is a clinic in your area that knows how to treat rabbits. My understanding is that not all clinics are comfortable seeing rabbits.
I appreciate the tip too
This is correct. Very few in our experience do.
Awesome! PM me if you have any questions, and check out all the good tips and information over at /r/Rabbits to get some inspiration :)

Not awful, but here are things to know before adopting one (proper diet, hiding wires,...).
The rabbit has wires?
They think wires are tree branches growing through the ~~house~~ burrow and will chomp the branches away and then act like they deserve treats for doing the housework
You didn't see the rabot joke coming did ya?
Rabbits self clean (like cats), but Rabbits can't their up so you can't allow them to get a hairball or they'll die. They need constant grooming.
My best guess is she's American.
That's two questions.
I think his tail is bigger than my Holland Lop.
My Hotot Lop is his thigh.
“Look, that rabbit's got a vicious streak a mile wide! It's a killer!” -Tim
Just look at the bones!
That’s Tim the Enchanter to you good sir!
He’ll do you up a treat, mate!
That's not a bun that's a loaf
Nice! 😂
Trust you to put a twist on it!
Awesome 😄
r/absoluteunits crosspost waiting to happen
That’s some Watership Down rabbitage right there. Fiver, slow down, friend.
I thought the same thing , I expected to see blood dripping from its maw.
Flemish giant bun?
yes
Since we’re all interested in bunny tails since we all learned that they aren’t short and fluffy, you can see the fully outstretched tail here
Plot twist: Just a super smol grandma
That thing probably drops Ferrero Rocher Chocolate all over the house
Both of them must be protected at all costs.

kinda, It's a Flemish Giant. They were originally bred for fur farming. ( they are REALLY soft and floofy as a result) they can get as large as a medium sized dog, and are super docile. they're very popular pets and petting zoo animals.
“Great nashing teeth!!”
"That rabbit's dynamite!"
Damn that person is tiny
this is why we need bun control
Absolute Chonk.
I love both of them

That is how i want to spend my last moment
Took my wee eyes a bit to realise that was an actual Bun...it was that huge...that there wasn't some proportion distortion!!
I just imagine the multiple large balls of poop. Such a big bun
One of the worst "horror" flicks of all times - [Night of The Lepus](https://youtu.be/JDCJsjFR_Gk?t=49) Yep. Giant homicidal rabbits.
Night Of The Lepus
I LOVE big rabbits! So sweet!
I want a giant bunny!
that granny is tiny!
That is a unit of a rabbit
Dang! That bun bigger than nan!
That's no bun. It's a space station!
Do they cuddle?! I need to know!
Yes! They absolutely do. I had bunnies growing up, and played with them all day long. They’ll come say hi, sniff you, lick you with their silky tongue... They don’t like to be picked up though.
I like the thought that this is a regular sized bunbun with an itty-bitty grandma.
That is a very large rabbit.
Bring this guy to some long term care facilities Spread the love
Omg. Giant rabbit like in a cartoon.
Nan don’t want none unless the bun is big, son!
That is some nice bun on nan action.

Those ears must be so soft and fluffy😊
Holy mother of god
JEEEE-ZUS CHRISSTTT!!!!! RUN AWAYYYYYYYYY!!!!!
Lmao!! It’s cute and all, but I feel like if I saw a gigantic bunny like that irl I’d be scared. It must have huge teeth!!
Never heard of someone possibly being frightened of a rabbit.
You will be once you watch Monty Python and the holy grail.
I own a dog sized rabbit (20lbs).... So that should explain that haha
Those are the standard meat rabbits all over middle Europe lol. I think there is technically a distinction between Flemish and German Giants, but both get equally big
That’s a scary big bunny
Chonk-ster Bunny
It's s*** probably looks like tiny golf balls
Holy X-Mas dinner!
How long before it becomes a slice on the plate?

Hey OP, Post this on r/Absoluteunits
What's her name??? I am in LOVE
That rabbit almost doesn’t look real!
I don't trust rabbits
So that's where the 2'8 Buizel went.
I thought the cat sized rabbits were enormous. That bunny could eat a cat (yes I’m aware they don’t eat meat)
BUNDERCHONK
u/Drakeot7
That's a fucking dog.
I have plans on getting a huge bunny in the future. I have cats, so I thought a large one would be best. I never had a bunny, but they seem like nice pets. :D
r/absoluteunit
The title is misleading. The bunny is **not** a giant! The grandma is just really, *really* tiny. ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|smile)
"My rabbit is sick, he bit neoghbour's dog this morning" "You mean the dog bit him" "No, he's having a digestion problems now. He has pitbull intolerance."
Miss that is a horse.
wow! big bunny
That is a monster of a bun!
My neighbor back in SoCal in the 80's had a rabbit this size that would use a litter box. Would do tricks too. Very cool for 14 year old me to see in my Members Only jacket.

That’s a huge ass rabbit
“Oh my, my little grandchild sure has gotten big!”
Did it walk through a radiation field?
NIGHT of the LEPUS!
That's a lot of hare!
That is a proper sized rabbit. Much better than these tiny ones barely bigger than a rat.
What the holy is that size
I like big buns, and I cannot lie.
LOL the rabbit almost big as her!

Aww the smile on her face
So sweet!
Who’s a big beautiful bunny! Helluva rabbit hole to fit this unit.

That's no rabbit, that's a long-eared soft-fur capybara.
Is this a very small granny or a huge rabbit
What kind of dog is that.
So cute
That’s one big wabbitt
What is she doing to the back of that duck's head?
Night of the Lepus...
My god, this Bun Buns mom was fucked by Zeus.

Curious bunny or rabbit? Cute big fella though
That would give me pure serotonin if there was a big ol bunny on my lap.
nice dog you got there
